Another sad example of the transformation of an interesting archaeological site and an outstanding example of fifth (probably) century engineering into an ahistoric Disneyland. The Theodosius cistern is well preserved, with even some of the watertight plaster still in place. Columns are uniform and were apparently purpose-cut for this cistern. However, after you have bought your 150 lira ticket and waited for your visiting time, you are greeted by loud elevator music and garish mood lighting. The place is littered with huge projector boxes for the real horror yet to come, a Disney light show. As there is not the tiniest shred of relevant information provided, despite the steep cost of the ticket, some visitors probably presume that the space was built in 2018, the year this "museum" opened, to amuse the contemporary crowd. One can only hope that this freak show at least pays for the conservation of other archaeological sites.

I only gave this 3 stars because I think its overpriced, $8 for entrance and show that is only 5 minutes, I was expecting more for the money. Nothing down there , you look around and wait for the show. Also I was expecting some informative signs or anything to explain more about the place , Nothing! Show is nice , we enjoyed it but $16 for 2 in 5 minutes. Definitely not for budget travelers or big families.

It is quite an interesting place. One sees the marvel of Roman engineering in providing water to the city inhabitants. It is not the largest of cisterns, but very well maintained. Looking through your camera brings the place to life. Has a good 10 minute light show. Cost was 120 TL. If you wish to purchase tickets on site, advised to come at least 30 minutes earlier.

This is not an archealogical museum as explained in Google. It is a light show with little historical information. And the price is expensive at £27 (900TL) for two whilst locals pay 240 TL (£7) for two. I would highly recommend not visiting and instead using the money towards a nice dinner or another genuine museum. Besides the pillars there is nothing. No written information can be found anywhere.

Wait was just for the top of the hour show and entrance, not due to a line. Much smaller than basilica but nicely preserved and interesting to watch the light show (no audio story) projected all around. 2 different shows, I think they were about 10 minutes each.

(Translated by Google) Şerefiye Cistern, between 428 and 443 Emperor II. It was built by Theodosius to store water through the Bozdoğan Arch (Valens Aqueduct). Water was distributed to "Nymphaeum", "Zeuksippos Baths" and "Great Palace" from the Belgrad Forest and its surrounding water resources through the Bozdoğan Aqueduct. The Cistern, together with the Binbirdirek Cistern built in the 4th century and the Basilica Cistern built in the 6th century, is one of the works that serve as a water reservoir that has provided the water needs of Istanbul for centuries. Arif Paşa Mansion was built on the cistern located on Piyerloti Street in Istanbul's Çemberlitaş district, Binbirdirek District, in the 1910s and the Eminönü Municipality Building was built in the 1950s. In 2010, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality demolished the Eminönü Municipality building, and the cistern, which was not known until recently, was found under the building without damaging the historical structure. The number of columns and the area is less than the Basilica and Binbirdirek cisterns and the area dimensions are approximately 45x25 meters. The Şerefiye Cistern is also known as Constantinus and Theodosius, with a 9-meter-high roof supported by 32 marble columns. Like the connection between the Basilica and Binbirdirek Cisterns, it has been determined that this cistern is connected to the Binbirdirek Cistern, and detailed studies are continuing on this issue. With the dismantling of the reinforced concrete structures around the cistern, the area was transformed into an archaeological park after landscaping. The interior and exterior of the historical building have been restored to their original state and the work has been protected by the steel construction and glass surface clad in the exterior. In the restoration, the building - like the Basilica Cistern - was designed as a museum where only itself will be exhibited, and a completely transparent entrance building was designed in the upper entrance set in accordance with this function. The purpose of the design is to perceive the 19th century wall as detached from the entrance building. Entrances and exits to the building, which is completely transparent, are provided from the front facade on Piyer Loti Street. This structure, which is smaller in both column and area than the Basilica Cistern and the Binbirdirek Cistern, is about 1600 years old. The building, which was known as Constantinus or Theodosius Cistern in the past, has been referred to as the Şerefiye Cistern since the 19th century.

Magnificent cistern. It’s impressive to say the least. They let people down every hour and entrance is 100 TL for adults. I have mixed feelings about the light show. Even though it does add something to it. I think all the metal boxes that are required for the Lightshow are ruining it. There’s just so much equipment down there and it takes away from the experience.

As of Jan 6th 2022, they do ask for the HES Code. (If you're a tourist, it's the one you did for health entrance). It's a quick visit, nothing much with the projection. It was nice anyway. I stayed til the end (when everyone left) to take some nice clean and without people pictures.

Wow!!! First of all, go early and you will have the place to yourself. I went to see the show at 9 am and the place was empty, just 3 people. Something that I've never experienced anywhere in Istanbul. The place is spectacular, the show is very well made. What a great surprise this was. I highly recommend it

I went inside just passing near it and went to check. Istanbul Cistern was closed for renovation, so we couldn't visit it. It was a chill break in the outdoor heat. Went down to check, and good we did. Lovely architecture, impozant columns, not very big. At one point lighs went off and 10 minutes of lovely projections started. All columns , ceiling and walls were telling stories :). A must go if you are in Istanbul

It is smaller than you think by looking at photos but definitely worth visiting. They perform 2 different light shows - the ticket for both is 270 TL, for a single one 180 TL (Nov.22). The show is not something extraordinary but still interesting and impressive. Unlike a museum there is no any information inside about the Cistern itself , or we were unlucky to not find it, and yet it was interesting to visit this place.

Although smaller than the famous Basilica Cistern , I think it still worth a visit as it does a very nice light show projection (about 10-12 min) which I think they change once every couple of months. There is a pause between each show which allows you to also admire the architecture. A nice coffee shop is waiting at the end of tour.

Only 20 TL entrance fee, this monument is an underground cistern built about 1400 years ago to store water into the city by viaduct It was discovered by accident and has now been beautifully restored. The restored cistern is wonderfully lit and a most impressive visit Thoroughly recommend a trip here and there is a pleasant cafe above

I shared photos of our experience, one of two at the Cistern. The photos are of the light show they offer so many times a day. It’s excellent and mystifying! Lights and art and modern and imagery marries to the ancient past and Roman Greco architecture and beyond. Above is a lovely cafe with very delicious coffee and treats… Very affordable and worth the hour or less it takes start to finish. Enjoy!

This is another example of how Istanbul is robbing the tourists and thinks they are only a giant wallet. The cistern itself is nice but small (only 8x4 columns) and is not crowded at all. However they’ve transformed it into a Disneyland-like place where they show movies. The projectors and structures are destroying the antique aspect of the cistern. The movies are esthetic but you don’t learn anything about any history. Before going I’ve read the comments here but I wanted to make up my mind and now I understand why most of the positive comments come from Turkish and the critical ones from foreigners: the local price is fair but it’s outrageous for foreigners and not worth it at all. I don’t mind paying more but five times…

I don’t know why they turned a historical landmark into this spectacle. Perhaps if the prices were reasonable for foreigners it might make sense but if not please note it’s a 500TL entrance for a 5 min light and sound show to their republic’s 100 anniversary. Locals pay 80TL so go figure this 6x more charge. The cistern pools are chocked full of the projectors so there’s no reflection to speak off. A huge pity. Do note the price and the fact that this is no longer a historical piece of landmark.

The café on the top floor turned out to be much more interesting than the attraction in the basement. I understand that I am a tourist, but the price is too high for a show that lasts only 5 minutes. Moreover, it is worth noting that it is just a projection with music. From a historical point of view, it is indeed interesting and intriguing. However, I did not see any audio guide or simple brochure in English. The projection show itself is not bad, but I have seen much better ones, and, more importantly, they did not require payment. If you are a tourist and money is not a problem for you, and you are very bored, you can go, but if you are saving every lira, it is better to avoid it.

The smaller of the two Cisterns we visited, the place has an eerie quality, which creates a unique atmosphere. The two light shows were nice, but not amazing. Over all I give it 5 stars for the fact that it was the only ancient attraction we went to that did not have huge queue's and thousands of people, so in a busy city the cool, calm and quiet was a welcome respite

For a light show, yeah, it is pretty cool. Fun to see, good for a few pictures. The tourist price for the show is 5x that of a local. Currently costing 450tl for both shows or 350tl for just the one. If I'm honest, it wasn't worth the money. The light show had nothing to do with the actual venue and there was little to no information on what it actually was. It was at best fine. But a lot of money for a light show that is a free addition in a lot of other cities. Also no bathrooms. There is a restaurant on top with a bathroom that you can only use of you are a customer of the restaurant.

It is a beautiful historic landmark. However, there is absolutely no information about the site. The entire cistern's walls and columns are constantly covered by projected images with a very confused story telling (and very related to some kind of propaganda). Three stars is actually very generous.

Nice and interesting, much less crowded compared to the famous Basilica Cistern. No line at the entrance( although the price is a bit medium-400 Lira's per person). Smaller and not having that "Instagram interesting" architecture in column details, great light shows compensating it very well. Also,it is 100 years older than the Basilica cistern and represents a fine example of Roman architecture. Also,a cozy coffee place is available on the first floor.

Due to the fact that bigger one (Basilica Cistern) was closed, this one was good alternative just to get the feeling on how the water has been handled 1500 years ago. It is less impressive due to much smaller size but it offers a bit of (10 min) multimedia show which is well done. Unfortunately many big video projectors all around are spoiling the authentic feeling.

Beautiful cistern steeped in history. They offer a light show to bring the cistern to life. Amazing to experience it. The light is 10 mins and the. You have another 20mins to roam around on your own. There are steps you can take to go down or you can use the elevator.

Just went there today.. They offered two prices for foreigners, single pass with price TR 250 and two shows pass with price TR 350.. I decided to bought the two shows pass as I was curious. I read the reviews that it’s a magnificent show. And indeed tho.. The light show was incredible, especially the first show. The second show was okay.. I think each show takes 15-20 minutes. I would recommend to buy the single pass only as the first show is better than the second one. Recommended place to visit once you are in Istanbul.

  • 1/5 Kelly Z. 11 months ago on Google
It’s 350 lira per person for tourists for two shows. Much cheaper for locals. The cistern is really small, about 8x4 pillars and nothing much to see. The light shows were not very impressive and lasted 5 minutes each with some propaganda thrown in. If you booked for the two shows you have to wait 20 minutes in the cistern until the light show starts. We were quite bored and I would not recommend this unfortunately. Not worth my time and money.

An amazing, enchanting, and indescribable place awaits you—an underground water cistern in a spacious area adorned with historical Roman columns dating back to the 6th century AD. It is one of the massive underground cisterns that supplied water to Istanbul during the Roman era. You enter the cistern after purchasing a ticket and embark on an enjoyable journey with laser shows and lighting that create fantastical scenes on its walls and columns. It truly was an awe-inspiring experience and worth revisiting. The location is close to the Hagia Sophia Mosque and the Blue Mosque within the Sultan Ahmed tourist area, so visiting it should be on your list of places to explore when you come to Istanbul.

  • 5/5 Caner A. 9 months ago on Google
2 different light shows are presented in this historical cistern. Each show takes around 15 mins. First one is about history of Istanbul, second one was a bit more abstract art. I really liked the experience and will strongly recommend it. It will take around 30 mins to watch both. Worth the price.

  • 5/5 Emily 7 months ago on Google
This ancient cistern is hidden beneath a modern building. We were fortunate to arrive just minutes before one of the light shows began. We bought tickets to both shows and enjoyed them both.

  • 5/5 Wajeeha H. 7 months ago on Google
This is one of the hidden treasures of Istanbul. Not only is it in the target touristic area, the fact that not many tourists and locals know about it is surprising. Walking underground to the cistern, is a pretty good experience. It's a dimly lit place so you'll get the feeling of being in an exquisite place. Also, the turkish government has made great efforts into restoration so you'll see tons of scaffolding along the poles. There is also a video projected onto the cistern poles which tells you the story of how these water columns were used in the ancient times. No need to buy tickets in advance. Place is wheelchair friendly
