Şeyh Süleyman Mosque (full name in Turkish: Şeyh Süleyman Mescidi, where mescit is the Turkish word for a small mosque) is a mosque in Istanbul converted from a former Byzantine building which was part of the Eastern Orthodox Pantokrator Monastery. Idyllically located on the corner of Zeyrek and At Pazarı Streets, in the district of Fatih, Seyh Suleyman Mosque was originally the Imperial Chapel or Baptistery of the Pantocrator Church. It is one of the hidden secrets of the town and once here, the visitor is greeted by a warm and serene ambiance. Known for its simple structure, the building comprises of a square base and a polygonal apse with eight corners.

Historical, calm, peaceful, well-kept and restored. May God bless those who contributed. One of the hidden values of Istanbul. The place is waiting for you to explore, and the silent people lying in the courtyard are waiting for your prayers.

In the district called Çırçır, between Zeyrek and At Pazarı, you will see an octagonal mosque whose minaret was added later. This building, which is immediately understood to be a Byzantine work due to its construction style, is today known as Sheikh Suleiman Mosque. Some sources mention that this structure, whose construction date is unknown, was a funeral chapel or library of the Pantocrator Monastery (now Zeyrek Mosque), but Prof. Dr. Semavi Eyice states that this building is a baptistery and a tomb building. This claim of Eyice is most likely true. Because a burial chamber was found on the lower floor of the building during the excavation in the 1950s, and the room was recently repaired by the General Directorate of Foundations. The altars found in the burial chamber suggest that the structure is older. Sheikh Suleiman, who lived during the reign of Mehmet the Conqueror, turned this building from the Byzantine period into a mosque. The building, which began to be known as Sheikh Suleyman Masjid, was damaged in the Cibali fire in the 18th century. During the reign of Sultan Mustafa III, it was repaired by Kazgani Hasan Ağa, Ayşe Sultan's valet, and a pulpit was added. The building, which was used as a library for a while, was used as a masjid again after 1930. There is also a very simple and spiritual grave in the garden of the mosque. If you happen to be in Zeyrek, be sure to visit the mosque, read the Fatiha to the inhabitants of the graves, and if it is open, do not return without seeing the grave chamber downstairs.

A mosque I saw randomly. The neighborhood it is located in is ideal for those who like to take photos. There is a cemetery in the courtyard of the mosque. It has a nice simple ambience.
