My
dad
had
a
cancerous
thyroid
removed
at
this
hospital
in
July
2023.
We
were
told
that
this
was
a
routine
operation
and
that
he
would
be
out
in
two
hours.
To
our
dismay,
we
were
left
in
the
dark
for
six
to
seven
hours.
The
only
feedback
we
had
was
that
he
was
'agitated'
upon
his
discharge
from
the
surgery
room
and
that
he
needed
to
be
monitored
closely
in
the
ICU.
What
in
fact
had
happened
was
that
each
time
they
attempted
to
extubate
my
dad
(and
they
tried
this
four
times!),
he
could
not
breathe.
We
found
out
later
that
this
was
due
to
his
vocal
cord
paralysis.
When
he
finally
got
discharged
from
the
hospital,
he
became
a
forgotten
patient.
No
one
from
the
hospital
called
to
check
up
on
him.
No
one
discussed
an
after-care
programme.
We
had
no
clue
when
he
would
be
prescribed
a
thyroid
hormone
replacement.
We
had
to
seek
appointments
from
the
otolaryngologist.
After
three
weeks,
my
dad
was
given
a
radioactive
iodine
therapy.
This
triggered
oedema
and
breathing
complications.
He
ended
up
in
the
ICU
four
times
due
to
low
oxygen
saturation
levels.
His
treatment
in
the
ICU
is
another
long
story.
Given
that
he
was
still
emitting
radiation,
he
was
placed
in
a
room
akin
to
a
depot
without
a
nurse
call
button.
When
he
was
short
of
breath,
he
tapped
on
his
bed
rail
to
call
for
help.
No
one
heard
him.
He
could
not
remember
what
happened
next.
As
nurses
later
on
confirmed,
he
had
fainted.
No
one
should
be
subjected
to
the
inhumanity
that
he
experienced.
The
oxygen
in
his
blood
could
not
be
raised
to
a
healthy
level.
Hence,
the
ICU
head
sought
the
advice
of
another
otolaryngologist,
who
recommended
an
immediate
tracheostomy.
Why
did
we
wait
so
long
to
have
this
done?
Because
the
surgeon
who
removed
the
thyroid
was
vehemently
opposed
to
it
from
the
start!
My
dad's
blood
readings
gradually
recovered
upon
this
intervention.
As
soon
as
he
was
discharged
from
the
ICU,
we
sought
the
services
of
a
university
hospital
where
the
otolaryngologist
works
closely
with
the
cardiologist,
radiologist
and
endocrinologist.
In
short,
do
not
ever
consider
this
hospital.
Its
doctors
work
in
silos
and
are
negligent
of
their
patients.
