(Translated by Google) The story of a mosque .. The Hanging Mosque of Ibn Tulun is a unique masterpiece built by a Copt Ibn Tulun Mosque Ahmed Mansour wrote the newspaper, the seventh day Saturday ، 19 May 2018 08:00 AM On top of a small rock located in a mountain in the area of Qalaat al-Kabsh, the largest historical mosque in Egypt was built in Cairo, which was ordered by Ahmed Ibn Tulun, founder of the Tulunid state in the year 263 AH / 877 AD. We are talking here about the Ibn Tulun Mosque. In the middle of the Sayyida Zeinab neighborhood, the Ibn Tulun Mosque was built to become the third mosque and mosque built in the Islamic capital of Egypt after the Amr Ibn Al-Aas Mosque in Al-Fustat, and the Al-Askar Mosque in the city of Al-Askar, on an area of approximately 6 and a half acres, to express the symbol of the independence of the Abbasid state, which was known at the time The Jama Masjid is the center of Islamic capitals, and for this reason Ahmad Ibn Tulun ordered the construction of the huge mosque "263 AH - 877 AD" and ended in "265 AH - 879 AD", and its cost reached 120 thousand dinars. Ahmed Ibn Tulun sought the help of the engineer Said bin Katib al-Farghani, a Coptic engineer skilled in architecture, who undertook the building of the Nil Scale on the island of Rawda in the year 864 AD after he ordered its architecture to be built by the Abbasid Caliph Al-Mutawakkil, and in the era of Ahmed Ibn Tulun entrusted him with building his most important facilities, and he built for him first barrages Bin Tulun and a well at the pool of Habash to deliver water to Al-Qata`a city. And as it was stated in the Mosque of al-Sirah al-Tuluniyah: “Ahmad ibn Tulun wanted to build the mosque, so it was estimated for him 300 columns, and he was told that what you find or access to churches in the countryside and the loss is ruin, so he endures that. He denied it and did not choose it, and his heart was tormented by thinking about his matter. To him: I build it for you as you like and you choose without intentionally except for the pillars of the qiblah, so I bring it while his hair is long until it hangs on his face, so he built it and was well built in my eyes, Ahmad ibn Tulun. The mosque is one of the distinguished architectural masterpieces with an area of 6 and a half acres, its length is 138 meters and its width is about 118 meters. In the middle of the courtyard is a large dome based on 4 arches, and the number of entrances to the mosque is 19 entrances, but the main entrance is currently adjacent to the Gair Anderson Museum, and the mosque's minaret has a unique architectural style, which is not found in the minarets of Cairo, and the height of the minaret from the ground is 40 m .

We took more than 50 pics and videos at Mosque of Tulun since the ancient Islamic architecture was so astonishing and the view from the top was spectacular. It was a special day I first tried the ride on tutu and I was much amazed by Egyptians’ driving skills. ——————————————— After this trip, I understood more about Islamic culture. Some stereotypes need to be abolished and some cultural habits should be respected. The oldest and at the same time the largest of all medieval mosques of Cairo. This mosque strikes you with its simplicity and sheer grandeur. As with all places in Egypt, beware of rando's coming up to you and trying to give you a "tour" of the place for a tip.

One of the most beautiful historical mosques i’ve seen, the mosque is very old yet it’s very well-preserved and taken care of, architecturally it’s very beautiful and also unique as the minaret is kind of similar to the Abbasid Malwiya minaret in Iraq, the mosque is of course free to enter and i do highly recommend checking it out.

If one has time to visit only one Islamic monument in Cairo, it should be this one. Its simplicity and grandeur of scale make it the most moving of the great mosques. Built between 876 and 879 AD, it is the oldest mosque in Cairo that remains essentially as it was built. Its inspiration is almost exclusively Mesopotamian as Ahmad ibn Tulun, the ruler of Egypt at the time, came from Bagdad as a representative of the Abbasid caliph. Ibn Tulun razed the Christian and Jewish cemetery to build the mosque in their place, on top of the hill. The legend says that Noah’s ark had landed here after the flood. The crenellation above the walls is amazing: it bears a resemblance of human figures with linked arms. It's weird but they seem designed by Keith Haring! Another interesting feature is the minaret, with a spiral staircase on the outside, inspired by the ziggurats of ancient Babylon. Climbing the stairs to the top of minaret worth the efforts as the panoramic views are exceptional.

Boasting a huge courtyard and a minerat that you can actually climb for a perfect view of the all monument and surrounding neighbourhoods of cairo. Designed to be the heart of Ibn Tulun's capital (Al-Qatta'i) - (القطائع) similar to Amr Ibn El A'as mosque in (Al-Fustat) - (الفسطاط) and the lost Al-'Askar mosque in Egypt's second islamic capital (Al-'Askar) - (العسكر) I read a few facts about Ibn Tulun's mosque and read that it was Built upon 26,318 sq meters I was intrigued but never fully realised how grand and vast this mosque is except when i visited it. Though i think i have visited bigger buildings areawise -I never visited the pyramids- but i consider Ibn Tulun's mosque the most building that gave me the "grand" feeling in Cairo and it feels really calm and quiet due to the natural light and vast scale of it. When you combine those feelings with the fact that you are visiting one of the oldest mosques in Egypt And in the world that is still intact and in its orginal form, then you will get how beautiful this place is and how it's a must see for anyone visiting Cairo. Also make sure to visit the Gayer-Anderson museum with it. It's a truly fascinating place. combining and merging the different periods that Cairo witnessed throughout history.

One of the most beautiful mosques in Cairo and an absolutely must see !!! Address: Ahmed Ibn Tolon Sq., Tolon, El Sayeda Zeinab, Cairo, Egypt The mosque was built from 876 to 879 under Ahmad ibn Tulun, who ruled over Egypt as governor of the Abbasid caliphs between 868 and 884 and led the country to de facto independence. The beginning of construction was dated by the Egyptian historian al-Maqrizi (1364-1442),[1] the completion of which is recorded on an inscription on the mosque. The mosque was built on the small Gebel Yashkur (“Hill of Thanksgiving”). A local legend claims that Noah's ark touched down here after the flood[2] and the surviving roofs were built from its wood. The mosque formed the center of Ibn Tulun's emerging capital, Al-Qatta'i, not far from Fustat, from which the empire of the Tulunid dynasty he founded was ruled. The mosque was originally located next to the palace of Ibn Tulun, from which a door next to the minbar gave him direct access. Al-Qatta'i was destroyed in the early 10th century, the mosque is all that remains. The mosque was built in the Samarra style combined with an Abbasid structure. It consists of a covered hall gallery surrounding the inner courtyard, with the largest hall pointing towards Mecca in the Qibla direction. The original mosque had its ablution fountain (sabil) in the area between the inner and outer walls. In the 13th century, Sultan Lajin had another sabil with a high domed roof added in the center of the inner courtyard.

The oldest unchanged mosque in Cairo. It was built way back in the 9th century, yet it still retains its full original form! Its Abbasid architecture is especially unique because it’s uncommon among Islamic monuments in Cairo. The spiraling minaret is one of its kind in Egypt, it was famously built to mimic Samarra’s landmark minaret. Being the biggest mosque in all of Cairo, and given its vast courtyard takes up most of the space, it feels so different inside from outside. None of the hustle of ElSaleeba St makes it inside. But along with all the monuments lined along that street, it forms such an amazing portrait that brings the glories of the past alive, or at least lets it tower over the present silently.

The Ibn Tulun Mosque in Cairo is a splendid example of early Islamic architecture. Built in the 9th century, it is one of the oldest and largest mosques in Egypt. Its unique design features a spacious courtyard and a famous spiral minaret that stands out for its distinctive style. The mosque's overall ambiance is serene and contemplative, highlighted by intricate geometric patterns and arabesque designs. It's a testament to the ingenuity of Islamic architecture and remains a significant cultural and historical landmark in Cairo. Visitors often appreciate its grand scale, historical significance, and the peaceful atmosphere it exudes.

Ahmed bin Tulun Mosque is a place that provides an incredible sense of tranquility, and the best thing is that the entry is free. You'll feel like you've traveled back 1,200 years in history. This mosque is considered the oldest mosque in Egypt that has preserved its original state. The mosque closes at 5 p.m., so I recommend visiting at least two hours before that to have enough time to explore and go up the minaret and enjoy the mosque from above. Unfortunately, we arrived late and missed the opportunity to go up. I highly recommend going and experiencing the serenity and the historically comforting atmosphere.

Just amazing, although not that secure yet, as not finished yet the fence and really hard to go up the stairs, but very recommended as views of Cairo are astonishing. You can even walk over the mosque's wall if you do not want to go over the minaret.

That’s was one the best experiences in Cairo. It was not on my fav to-do list but I am glad I visited. The architecture is amazing and most of the original work from the, I guess, 10th century is still intact. The best part was lack of tourists and the usual Cairo chaos. Place was very peaceful and I was able to look at the walls and the carvings in my own space.

Allhamdulillah we went here to pray Friday prayer and we discovered more than we hoped to with beautiful views from the top. And the prayer hall. Felt very peaceful in one of Cairo's oldest best preserved mosques and no hagglers here! Its a good idea to take a small prayer mat with you and a bag for your shoes if you mind about the dust that comes in from the courtyard. Or choose a prayer spot further away from the courtyard. Plenty of space available for men and women sections for prayer. We walked to here from Sayyedina Zayneb mosque (approx 15mins) but be wary of hagglers outside of Sayyedina Zayneb and wear comfy shoes as the walk can be muddy/ poo along the pavements/streets. We got an Uber by walking to main street to go to Muhammad Ali mosque after, as we struggled to get one right outside the mosque.

The mosque is located in a slightly elevated region of the Sayyida Zaynab district, in al-Khudairi Street. Date of the monument : Hegira 265 / AD 879 Period / dynasty : Tulunid State, Abbasid period Patron : Ahmad ibn Tulun (r. AH 254-270 / AD 868-84) who established the Tulunid state (AH 254-92 / AD 868-905). The building was restored several times, notably between 1296 and 1299, when the wall facing Mecca and the minaret—which has three floors, each in a different shape (square, spiral, and octagonal)—were rebuilt. It was used as a belt factory in the 18th century and was divided into shops in 1814. Classed as a historic monument in 1890, the mosque has since been completely restored.
