Another great citadel in Romania and one of the biggest, Alba Carolina has been a meaningful place for Romanians during different times. The place is huge and if you are not prepared to walk half a day you may rent a bike, take the electric minibus or bring your own bike. Inside there are plenty of restaurants, street foods and bazaars to meet all tastes. Suitable for all ages this plece is also a must-see.

In the following images you will see the main gates of the citadel, personally I loved it! This piece of history brings forward the past of what the former lands were back in the times of the romans and before Romania being united by Mihai Viteazu. Pleanty of intrinsic sites to visit, a multutude of monuments, art, religion , topped up with an overall high energetic vibe!

One of the best attraction to visit in Transylvania. Between Cluj Napoca and Sibiu, Alva Iulia is a nice city for visiting. The Citadel is quite impresive and also the downtown is nice for walking, eating spending time. From there you can go in any direction where you have something interesting to visit

The most beautiful and the biggest citadel in romania. You need one whole day to visit everything completely. So clean and well maintained by the management. You can entry direct by the car there and are a lot of parking places available

The Alba Carolina Citadel in Alba Iulia, Romania, is a magnificent fortress steeped in history and architectural beauty. Built in the 18th century by the Habsburg Empire, the citadel is a stunning example of Vauban-style military architecture, featuring imposing walls, bastions, and gates. Visitors can explore its well-preserved fortifications, picturesque courtyards, and historic buildings, including the stunning St. Michael's Cathedral and the imposing Third Gate. A few hours tour is not enough time to see all of this citadel. Would recommend a whole day. It's beautiful and well maintained.

Was planning to visit the Citadel for quite a while now. This year I have finally got the time to do that and I could say that it is mesmerizing! The citadel is really good preserved and restored, what makes me happy is the fact that they are still working on the restoration, which makes me believe that it will look better and better. A good place to eat, which offers you a tavern feeling is PUB 13.

Absolutely worth a visit for anyone who is passionate about culture, history, and architecture. It'll probably take a couple of days to visit and read up on everything that the citadel has to offer but it's well-worth the time. You'll find a few museums that will showcase the period of Roman occupation, the history of Romania and its two unifications, the medieval history of the citadel, etc. The squares and plazas are great spots for spending an afternoon as well, with plenty of small shops to cater for your food and drink needs. Overall a superb citadel, well-kept by the local political scene, with plenty of things to do and see.

I thought I would see just another citadel, but I was positively impressed by how it looks like and how much history is around it. And there are bike lanes and many, many nice walkways. Definitely to be visited if you ever get to Alba Iulia.

Must see citadel in the heart of Transylvania. Once per day with an enactment of historic actions. Well preserved walls, gates and churches. Refurbished with care.

One of the best places to visit and stop by in Alba Iulia. Everyday, at 12 o'clock they have the fortress guard's change and is a unique experience. There are couple of terraces inside and lot of attractions to see.

Really amazing place ! You can see the old catholic church but also the new orthodox cathedral. In the center of citadel there is the statue of Mihai Viteazul and "1 Decembrie" University. In the "ditches" you can take a walk with bicycle and see the green and trim places

A great lesson of history! We were a group conducted by a history teacher, thanks to our friends in Ciugud/AB. The tour was excellent, it is great to find out some new learnings about the life of a city, of a citadel. I want more of this 🤪

Quite large which is a good job as there is nothing much else to do in alba iulia. Some reasonable bars in the citadel entrance is free, surprisingly...at least ro walk the grounds.

ALBA Carolina It is truly an awe-inspiring location with a rich historical significance. This place undoubtedly deserves a 5-star rating for the profound representation it holds. However, there are a couple of aspects that slightly hinder its overall ranking. Firstly, there is a notable concern regarding the maintenance of numerous items. While renovations were in progress during my visit, it seems that some items have been neglected for quite a while. Prioritizing their upkeep would greatly enhance the overall experience. Secondly, the customer service personnel could use improvement. A more welcoming and accommodating approach would make visitors feel not only valued but also connected to the historical essence of the place. Feeling welcomed and a part of history should be an integral part of the visit experience.

Beautiful location! It is ideal for a romantic afternoon walk or a family day trip. A walk back in time full of history. We went and visited both churches and managed to go up in the church tower, but there wasn't that much to see from up-top, it was a good workout, though 😉 You can find a few restaurants both inside the citadel and around it. We decided to relax and have a cold beer inside the citadel and went to a nearby restaurant to eat. Overall, it was a beautiful experience ✨️

Alba-Iulia is a place with rich history, spanning nearly 2000 years. Plenty of things to see and do. Remnants of a II century roman fort, XII century cathedral, XVI century fortress, museums and the Vauban style star fortress.

A great historical place and a must see if you are visiting Romania and especially the Transylvania region. This citadel restoration took years but the result is WOW, and everywhere you look , inside the citadel, you "feel" what the Romanian ancestors lived and saw in their lives.

Beautiful sight, very clean. During the week in the afternoon there are less people which makes it easier to visit. Inside the cathedral was amazing.

Very nice place. It serves as the center of the city, with lots of terraces and places that sell food. There are also a lot of things to do like seeing the citadel gates, admiring the architecture, visiting museums about the Great Union of Romania, Roman vestiges and visiting two churches. Also, during the summer, every Saturday and Sunday at 12 you can watch the change of guards between the third and fourth gates.

Clean, nice view, museums, i would recommend it for a dy trip. Every friday, 7Pm, they have a small act right inside the citadel that reconstructs at a small scale the war between dacs and romans.

  • 4/5 Barry B. 2 years ago on Google
The Citadel contains some interesting history, architecture and religion. There are some nice preserved remains to the fortifications which give it some historical appeal. It also contains normal modern era commercial and residential real estate which takes away from the historical environment.

  • 5/5 Marian R. 2 years ago on Google
Largest fortress in Romania and one of the main historical sites in the country! I visited the fortress in two different occasions and was fortuned to be special events. Beautifully decorated, lots of merchants, street food, restaurants, shops and museum. Lots of things to see and do, even if no events going on.
