Then I go to the theatre and and the movie starts 5 minutes late in German (they are playing off a bluray dvd player.) They then restart the device but cannot figure out how to change the language… the dvd player won’t work so it appears they switch to Netflix?? Im being completely serious as you see in picture and video provided. Eventually half an hour late they get the dvd working in English but the writing in the film is still and German and the English subtitles don’t fit on the screen. I hear the member of staff in the screening room behind scream ‘kanker’. This is a once in a lifetime cinema experience - I have never seen something so disorganised and ridiculous. I chose to just walk out and instead spend my evening in the sun. I can see the funny side of this but really as a paying customer it’s an absolute disgrace

Cute student run cafe + cinema opposite the University. Appropriately run down, sitting in the cafe is somewhere half between sitting in a fraternity bar and a student dorms. Tea and drinks are good, the crowd is deeply Gen-Z and a great spot to spot what’s hip amongst the youth. Progressive place with hip stickers and bathroom graffiti asking all of life’s big questions (who am I? What’s the difference between love and lust? Please call me Samantha etc) Perhaps less appropriate for bringing a date (unless also Gen-Z) or a business relation.

Kriterion is a poorly run, inaccessible place. I've visited twice: -The disabled toilet is covered in piss (just like the regular ones). -The air in the screening room is very musty and dusty. If you have asthma or (dust) allergies I would NOT recommend going here. My lungs hurt after the viewing :(. The amount of dust that you can see in the projector beam is insane, the room also just smells really bad. I feel like there is barely any ventilation in the cinema hall. If you wanna role play like you're in Berlin and think all of this is "trendy": go for it. If you care about accessability, clean air, and not stepping in piss to go the toilet: go to any other cinema with equal pricing.

One of the bar-cinemas which are very common on Amsterdam. The bar looked very nice and unique, unfortunately due to the new restrictions we weren't able to order anything, but I would visit again to check it out. The movie room was pretty big, nice video and sound quality, would definitely come back and watch another film there! I love Kriterion and hope it never changes. It's a cinema and bar that's mostly focused at students. They might not have the highest quality screens/seats in Amsterdam but their film selection and fun bar section make up for this. They often have nice festivals that go off the beaten track.
