Mittlere Brücke (Middle Bridge) is a bridge that spans the Rhine river in the city of Basel, Switzerland. It is a cantilever bridge that was built between 1911 and 1913 and is a popular tourist attraction in the city. The bridge is 202 meters long and has a roadway that is 8 meters wide. It is a major transportation route in the city, as it connects the Old Town (Altstadt) with the Grossbasel district. It is also an important link between Switzerland and Germany, as it is part of the European route E35 that runs from Norway to Italy. In addition to serving as a transportation route, the Mittlere Brücke is also a popular spot for tourists to take in views of the Rhine and the city of Basel.

Mittlere Brücke ("Middle Bridge") is the oldest existing bridge across the Rhine River which extends from Lake Constance to the North Sea. It was completed in the 1200's. In the early 1900's it was entirely rebuilt. It is 192 meters long and 18.8 meters wide, built from local granite. This new bridge was refurbished in 2002. The bridge is open to trams and buses plus pedestrians and bicycles. And while it was at one time the middle bridge, there are more in Basel since then so that it's no longer the middle. Passerelle des Trois Pays, Dreirosenbrücke, Johanniterbrücke are downstream with the Wettsteinbrücke and Schwarzwaldbrücke are upstream. There is no toll to cross the Mittlere Brücke.

Built with a loan from the Basil Bishop in the 13th century, this bridge is iconic for the city. To pay back the loan, all that crossed the bridge had to pay a toll, except the local religious monetaries. In the early 20th century, the bridge underwent a renovation and was totally rebuilt out of stone and because of 2 new bridges being built, it got the name: Middle Rhine Bridge. You can have some amazing views of swimmers, boats, the city and of course the river.

Middle age bridge still in use and full of legends. It looks gloomy and strong. It has few monuments on it. One of them is for victims of inquisition who was burned on fire as a witches.

First bridge across the river Rhein (yes, for the whole river!). Brought a fortune to the city of Basel through tolls throughout the Middle Ages. Old wooden bridge was demolished early 20th century, and reconstructed in stones to carry the weight of the new Tramway. The tower were public executions were performed is still there, but the last witch was thrown to the river 400 years ago. Some people attach a padlock to the gate of the execution tower thinking it’s a chapel, but no...

A very beautiful part of the city. The view from the bridge is simply amazing. Especially at sunset. The city is displayed in the waters of the Rhine as in a mirror. I highly recommend visiting this bridge.

A historical gem connecting cultures of Switzerland, Germany and France. Beyond its historical and artistic appeal, Mittlere Brücke also offers a convenient and picturesque way to explore Basel. It connects the two sides of the city and provides easy access to the vibrant Old Town, where you can discover charming shops, cozy cafes, and fascinating museums. It's the perfect starting point for a leisurely stroll through the city's narrow cobblestone streets, filled with architectural gems and hidden treasures waiting to be discovered. The gentle flow of the river, combined with the picturesque surrounding buildings and the backdrop of the city, painted a picture-perfect scene that seemed straight out of a postcard.

Rebuild in 1903, this is one of the oldest granite stone bridge in Basel City, Switzerland where the Rhine flows gracefully all year round. We stayed in one of the apartment overlooking this historical middle bridge.

As I was planning to go to Basel, I surfed the internet and found a few places that websites say I have to visit in Basel and this was one of them. You can get a few good views from the bridge. You can find a lot of half-timbered buildings on the side of the river which you can see from the bridge. It makes you really feel that you are in europe. Although compared to other views from bridges I have went to, the view here is just a bit above average. But you definitely have to visit it when in Basel.

Connecting the old town and new town this brige is a must-do. The bridge itself isn't that special, but the views from here are. Checking out the Rhein River and its shores is quite the nice thing to do. Besides that it's the great view of the old town you have from here. The skyline of Old Town Basel is quite a sight to behold, especially with the Münster sitting on top of the Hill. For that only it's worth the short walk to this bridge. The New Town on the other side offers lots of shops and restaurants, but the important sights are on the old town side.

A nice bridge with some history. The walk from the train station takes one through a shopping area, older town and a good view of the historical church. It was a cold, rainy day so I didn't get to much but I am sure in spring, summer it will be a fun filled area

A good place to hang out on weekends if you want a place where something is going on near by the rhine. Or also nice to just sit there and eat or even swim or barbecue in the summer. A bit crowded at times.

👍👍 Not too big, but a very beautiful park from Basel. Clean, many playgrounds for children, all green. 😍 I like the wood "obstacles" which are that interesting that even parents use them. The fact that at least blue parking place is not that hard to find might be a great plus for this park too.
