Beautiful upscale Black-owned restaurant. The food was amazing! The service was great! The atmosphere was beautiful. we ordered the shrimp and grits, gumbo, and fried green tomatoes and everything was delicious! I even got a non-alcoholic drink and it was really good too! You just have to make sure you get a reservation because they get booked up!

Yum! Yum! This small an intimate restaurant is a must experience. No need to put on your Sunday best but the casual and cozy environment is worth it. The short ribs melt in your mouth. That sauce on them is amazing! We also had fried green tomatoes, biscuits, shrimp and grits and drinks. Nothing disappointed. We will be back here!

Reservation made for a Friday night. Quickly seated. Very friendly wait staff. The green tomato and gumbo starters were excellent. Entrees tasty. Cornbread is a must do. Wanted dessert but we were too stuffed. Hope to get back to try the desserts. The only knock is it's a bit loud but food and staff are excellent.

Went on a Sunday afternoon and the place was booked up the entire day, but luckily it was only about a 10min wait for seats at the bar. After tasting the food, I understand completely as to why they are booked and busy. The food was absolutely delicious and seasoned to perfection as well as healthy portion sizes. The star of the show was the Strawberry Bread Pudding. I would come back to this restaurant specifically for that as I will make it a point to eat here the next times I come to Chicago.

The southern food here is fantastic. The biscuits are fluffy and the cornbread is moist. The collard greens are flavorful. And who doesn’t like fried green tomatoes with shrimp on top?! The chicken was so good but I think the shrimp and crawfish etouffee was the best entree. We ordered a lot from the menu and left feeling quite stuffed. The restaurant ambiance is quite nice and the place was packed on a Thursday night. The service was the one area that was underwhelming for a restaurant at this price point and caliber.

This is one of the best places I've dined anywhere in America! It's black-owned, elevated comfort food, with great ambiance/artwork, cozy chairs, and an open kitchen. They clearly pay attention to deatil. Our server was very thorough, kind, and knowledgeable not just about the food, but the restaurant's background/concept. Jumping to the food: the cornbread and collards were crack! I could keep eating them forever. The salmon and lamb entrees were both super tender and flavorful - skillfully prepared. The snap pea salad was such a simple dish, but simply amazing. The dessert menu is a complete home run! Good luck saving room! The banana pudding might be the best I've ever had. The red velvet cake was about as perfect as one could be: great texture, perfect ratio of cream cheese to cake, and not overwhelmingly sweet. The bread pudding was 100% the best I've ever had! That sauce was not shy about the bourbon and it made an excellent pairing with apples. To top things off, Damarr Brown sat and socialized with us for a few minutes after dinner. It's means a lot that they have a "celebrity" chef who's willing to stay present and interact with guests on a nightly basis. I give Virtue an 11/10 and my strongest recommendation if you're anywhere near!

Food was top notch. Service was awesome. The only thing for me personally is that the space is a bit tight. But I genuinely love this restaurant. The biscuits and cornbread both are the best I've ever had. I'll definitely be coming back.

Perfection through food is a beautiful experience! For my tastes, every morsel was prepared, seasoned, and cooked with the science of cooking. No other words are needed... I didn't notice much else, the menu was touch-free and water came in a bottle instead of a glass. **Content warning** "If food could make me org**m, this meal would have been foreplay!"

Great location only surpassed by the food and drinks. Fried green tomatoes with shrimp were delicious. My wife had the gizzards & dirty rice (not a fan of gizzards) but I couldn't stop eating it! Entrees did not disappoint & enjoyed my food (Walleye etouffee & grits) and my wife's (crispy honey glazed salmon!) Cornbread gets a 10 & the mac & cheese is outstanding - cheesy without being heavy. Oh, and cocktails hit the mark! Dessert was okay for me yet in fairness I was pretty full & went with my wife's pick (red velvet cake) which is not my top choice. Next time (soon) I'm getting banana pudding! Treat yourself, don't cheat yourself and check Virtue out!

Virtue is a upscale soul food restaurant located in Hyde Park,IL. We did make a reservation and were sat on time. For a Wednesday night, they were very busy. Our server was very nice and knowledgeable about the menu. They have a nice selection of food to choose from. They give really nice portions of food. My favorite things were the cornbread with honey butter and surprisingly the biscuits with pimento cheese. The greens were really good and flavorful. They do not allow you to swap out sides with their dishes. (We were told that it was for inventory purposes.) I did not care for the mac and cheese. (It was not bad, it just was not my favorite. ) I had the short ribs, they come with mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. I would have liked a little more spinach, it was kind of hidden underneath the potatoes. They do not allow outside food like birthday cakes, so just be aware. ( They were nice enough to hold the cake in the fridge for us.). Overall, it’s a nice restaurant with good service! I would visit again.

Can I give more than 5 stars? Taylor our waitperson was spectacular and guided us with selections . My husband is southern born & breed , so he knows the cuisine . We ordered the fried green tomatoes with shrimp to share. Absolute perfection! The blackened Catfish had just the right amount of heat and perfectly paired with the crunchy barbecue carrots. The collard greens transported my husband back to his childhood roots. But , I save the best for last . The biscuits and macaroni & cheese were so scrumptious …not sure we will ever enjoy either outside of Virtue !

Everything was great! -Let's start with the hostesses. I booked my dinner a week off. I stopped in & explained to the hostesses my screw up. They quickly & politely corrected my error. They told me to come today and they'd make a way. I got there THIRTY minutes late (very crazy day) & was Not expecting the same politeness, but Nope, they were still super kind. We were seated within 5 minutes. - The bar was pretty spacious and Chris was a true sweetheart. She introduced herself and gave us a rundown of the menu. She also helped us with drinks & her recommendations were Awesome! She was very attentive & extremely patient. She did a Fantastic job. -We ordered Lots of food and took a majority of it home lol. We ordered corn bread, Mac n cheese, greens, fried green tomatoes, gumbo, shrimp n grits, short ribs, catfish, and banana pudding. Everything was Delicious. The food came out quickly. Everything was fresh. The staff was constantly cleaning up and checking on guests. -We had a great time. Cool atmosphere. Very nice staff. Great food.

Tonight dinner amazing food, cocktails and service. Chicken liver appetizer was best I’ve ever had loved the addition of pomegranate gave amazing flavor and texture. Scallops huge and done to perfection melt in your mouth deliciousness, Pork Steak ( seasonal) was so flavorful and tender with just right amount of sauce and the red cabbage was flavorful and best texture I’ve ever had …the banana pudding with house made cool whip was refreshing with just the right amount of sweetness… Will be back as worth the trip to Hyde Park nothing up North can compare!!!!!!

Food: 10/10 (Dessert 6.5/10) Service: 10/10 Ambiance 10/10 Virtue is a true Hyde Park gem. First let me start off with you will need a reservation. The reservation requires a deposit per person. The deposit is deducted from your final bill so you aren't losing any funds unless someone in your party does not show up. No refunds so choose your party members carefully. I would like to say parking is easy, but it depends on the day and time. I found a metered parking spot across the street from the restaurant. There is a small paid parking lot walking distance from the location. You might find some free parking somewhere nearby because it is also located in a busy residential area. Now, about the food, you will not be disappointed. I feel like the portions we ordered were shareable and a nice amount for the price. The Fleurs de Prairie is a must try if you like rosé. Now hear me... I'm not saying the Mac and cheese is the bomb, but it isn't bad at all. I loved the collard greens with smoked turkey and the honey butter cornbread. In all, everything was flavorful and perfectly cooked. Our server was phenomenal, informative, funny, and attentive. The ambiance isn't grand and over the top... simple and elegant. If you don't like seating too close to others, just ask for a different table for your party. The dessert was not that great. When I think of peach cobbler I immediately am expecting a great crust and the burst of flavors of cinnamon, vanilla, brown sugar to pop in my mouth. It was lacking and seemed bland. Again, just my opinion. I hope you enjoy if you get the opportunity to visit this black owned establishment!

I enjoyed my experience at Virtue on yesterday the staff were professional, and welcoming and made us feel comfortable . The ambience was amazing, it's the perfect place for a romantic dinner date. To top it off, the food was everything. I ordered the Short Ribs, and they were so tender and juicy, they melted right in my mouth. The corn bread was also tasty, it has a sweet honey taste with whipped butter on top truly amazing . I would encourage everyone to try this place, you want be disappointed. It also gave me great pleasure, to support a black owed business. Kudos, to the owner and all the amazing staff at Virtue. I can’t wait for my next visit.

Virtue is worth it. From the time we walked into the restaurant until we walked out the door, we loved everything about this place. The vibe, the staff, and even the guests made for a great dining experience. Everything we had felt like love was put in it. Is good southern food in Chicago? Yeap, it’s a thing. We had Green Tomatoes, Catfish, Shirt Ribs, Mac & Cheese,Collards, and Cornbread with honey butter. All “slack your mama good.” We really wanted to try one of the delectable-looking sweet rations, but there was no room to put it in. We will just have to go back again. Two thumbs up for sure

Went with the family to Virtue, for the first time. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this restaurant. The service, ambience, and food were all phenomenal. Our server was Raj. She was incredible. She knew the menu and explained everything and was very attentive. The atmosphere was very relaxing, with a very nice vibe...very cozy. The food was delicious. I ordered the half chicken, gumbo, and cornbread. Biscuits, collard greens, and macaroni were also ordered for the table. I sampled the biscuits, macaroni, and cornbread. Loved every bite. The chicken was very flavorful. The gumbo was outstanding, and the macaroni was very good (Thanksgiving dinner level good). I was very surprised with the biscuit. I honestly expected it to be simple...boy was I wrong. It's something to experience. The cornbread, was above and beyond. Everyone in the family walked away having enjoyed a fantastic meal. The portions are nice sized, so you won't be disappointed there. Ordered a dessert to go. Haven't tried it yet, but I'm confident it's going to be delicious. If you go, know the restaurant is in Hyde Park. Parking there is horrendous, so give yourself ample time, and I strongly suggest making a reservation.

Phenomenal experience! We were not disappointed. Service , food , drinks, were all exceptional. The server took time in helping us select our drinks and dinner , even though the establishment was a full capacity. He was not rushed. Started with gumbo and fried green tomatoes followed by Braised short ribs , blackened catfish, collard greens with smoked turkey 🤤 red velvet cake and peach cobbler. Flavors on all dishes were jaw dropping fantastic- fresh quality ingredients. Details in presentation of each dish was outstanding. Just a great vibe !

Very nice dining experience at this relatively new restaurant in La Crosse. Very nice hostess and wait staff. The food was wonderful. Good beer and wine. Great entres and appetizers. Wonderful chocolate cake and coffee. Innovative decor and ambiance. Who would guess that this building housed Hooters for a few years.

The atmosphere and food is always spot on. Minus the expense of wine or drinks the cost of a multi-course meal is very competitive. The only marked complaint is that they don’t take reservations, however there is most always room at the bar where food is also served. The only sure way of scoring a table is to be there right when they open for dinner which is 5 p.m. What brings us back repeatedly is the quality of the food and a full wine list, a winning combination. Though the menu does not change much the chef’s style shine through every bite! We highly recommend you try Lovechild.

Virtue Restaurant is a great place to eat. It's located right in the middle of a cute area with a bunch of stores and restaurants. We sat outside and it's great for people watching. We shared a bunch of appetizers and then got mains as well. The gumbo is amazing. The pot roast is phenomenal. It comes with asparagus puree that is a really interesting flavor combo with the meat. For dessert we had the lemon meringue. So good. The service is also excellent. Thanks for a great dinner.

I took my mom and her friends here on yesterday February 19, 2022 to celebrate her birthday. Everyone absolutely loved their food. Everything we tasted was excellent! We had biscuits with cheese spread, fried green tomatoes, cornbread, salmon, short ribs, catfish, etc. Taylor was our table host. She was very gracious and was patient with us in explaining the menu. She also made sure the birthdays at the table were acknowledged! The atmosphere was very relaxing and we are looking forward to going back soon! Thank you Virtue for making this experience memorable!

My friend and I came super late for their happy hour and they were still nice to sit us by the bar. We immediately put in our order with - gumbo (delicious, not over empowering) - catfish slider (delicious) - cocktail peach tree fizz - cocktail patience is virtue Drinks and strong and food were delicious. I want to come back and check out their full menu as well.

My husband and I had a lovely experience at Virtue. Previously we had only had takeout (during Covid times) and while it can be difficult to get a reservation we were able to get one two weeks out. There was a fee to secure the reservation but it was then applied to the bill. Everything we ordered was delicious and the service provided by Felipe was exceptional. He was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and very attentive. The champagne upon being seated was a lovely touch. We will definitely be back.

Soul food on a higher level definitely. One of the most exquisite cornbread situations I ever tasted. The elevated Mac was exceptional 🏆 and I don't say that about "outside soul food Mac". The short rib was decadent for no reason. Take one bite and put the fork down and think about it for a second type of time. 5 stars fo a true south side 5 star experience. The Uncle Nearest whiskey drink was a one and done. Ridiculous drink.

Greens, cornbread with the honey butter, fried green tomatoes topped with shrimp, mac and cheese, blackened fish, short ribs...you name it. Virtue is the spot to try, they will not disappoint. Safety was first on the menu, before we entered to dine inside, our temperatures were checked then we were escorted to our table. Our party of six experienced great service, socially distant dining, attentive staff and exceptionally amazing food. We ordered different entrées but each couple gravitated towards the cornbread, greens and macaroni and cheese. The sides alone will fill you up and the portions are pretty sizable so you can share...if you're in the sharing mood. The short ribs were tender, shrimp and grits were amazing and the fish entrées seasoned well and cooked to perfection. We enjoyed every bite and had a little leftover to relive the experience all over again with leftovers the next day. We didn't leave room for dessert but if we had we would've went with the banana pudding. I enjoyed my mocktail, the hummingbird but our friends didn't love their cocktails as much one felt the basil in the drink was a little overpowering. Our tab was about $277 with gratuity and everyone left with full bellies and praises. Even the usually picky ones of our party that always order chicken fried hard or the one that questions whether each dish has pork or beef added for flavoring. Virtue managed to please them all.

What I didn't like was that my family and I were seated in a dinning room behind the kitchen. We passed with our small children 5 and 8 thru the hot stoves and boiling pots. It was scary. $70 dollars later, the food was average. Too much hype, expensive and we had to wait 30 minutes for a table. Which the seating was a total horror show. Would I go back. HELL NO

The ambiance, waitstaff and drinks were awesome but in my opinion the food just wasn't that great especially for the prices. And between 5 of us, we ordered a LOT. I didn't even end up eating my leftovers. We got the cornbread, mac n cheese (pretty decent), greens (very good), walleye, fried green tomatoes, gumbo (ok) and more. I'll go back for the drinks but I don't see myself eating there again. It PAINS me to say but yea. I went for my birthday, spent a LOT and had to get tacos at the end of my night.

I was happy to learn of those upscale southern soul food restaurant in Hyde Park. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and the staff was very knowledgeable of the food and menus. We started with Fried Green Tomatoes. I wasn't impressed as they were to thickly cut and lacked salt. It was recommended by our waiter that my sister and I try the the short ribs. I'm glad we did. They were tender and well seasoned and the gravy was superb. We also added the cornbread, Mac and cheese as a side and banana pudding and red velvet cake for dessert. All of our choices did not disappoint us. Delish! I give 4 stars for having to pay a non refundable 20.00+tax for a reservation for 2 (was applied to the bill) and paying a 3.5% surcharge to assist with employee insurance. Because of these extra fees unfortunately I may not return.

If I could give this place 6 stars I would. Allll the food was amazing and the service was on point! Highly recommend the short ribs, fried green tomatoes, gizzards, collard greens, banana pudding, and the red velvet cake. The only negative was that we had a reservation and had to wait a half an hour. But I feel like the service and food more than made up for it. Will be going here again!!

Generally I do not equate soul food with any level of fancy or fine dining, but I think Virtue definitely does it right! My friends and I ordered a lot of dishes to share. For small plates, we had the green tomatoes, the gizzards, and the gumbo. Everything was on point, especially the gumbo! In terms of the gizzards, the broth has a very strong taste, that I can see some people not liking it, but I personally do not mind. We got the shrimp & crawfish and catfish as the large plates, without knowing that the shrimp & crawfish plate came with grits, which was a pleasant surprise. We had cornbread and honey butter, as well as collard greens & smoked turkey as the extra dishes, and they were amazing! I have said this in my other reviews before, but restaurant collard greens can be a hit or miss, and Virtue's was a hit for me. As for the dessert, we had to go with the two classic ones, peach cobbler and banana pudding (called Millie's Puddin' here), and they were nothing short of amazing! The price was expensive, but the experience was worth it in my opinion. The location was very convenient. Within Hyde Park, it was a walking distance from my friend's apartment. Overall I definitely recommend it!

Virtue Restaurant truly deserves every single star in this stellar review! My experience during Restaurant Week 2024 was nothing short of extraordinary. The ambiance was inviting from the moment we walked in, and the staff's attention to detail was impeccable. We started our culinary journey with the Green Tomatoes, a delightful appetizer that set the tone for the evening. The Gulf Shrimp with Leroy's Remoulade was a burst of flavors, and my date raved about the scrumptious Cornbread. The menu showcased a perfect blend of Southern charm and culinary expertise. I indulged in the Shrimp & Crawfish over Geechie Boy Stone-Ground Grits with Etouffee for the main course. The combination was a masterpiece, each bite delivering a symphony of textures and tastes. Meanwhile, my date enjoyed the Blackened Catfish with Carolina Gold Rice and Barbecue Carrots, which impressed him thoroughly. The side of Mac & Cheese was the perfect comfort food complement to our exquisite main courses. Dessert was the grand finale, and the Red Velvet Cake was a heavenly conclusion to our gastronomic adventure. The flavors were rich and indulgent, leaving us with sweet memories long after the last bite. The service at Virtue was nothing short of stellar. The staff anticipated our needs, and we never had to ask for anything. They were attentive, knowledgeable about the menu, and genuinely passionate about ensuring our dining experience was top-notch. The seamless service allowed us to focus entirely on savoring the exceptional dishes. The fantastic music further enhanced the atmosphere, creating a backdrop that made me want to happy dance in celebration of the wonderful food and wine pairings. Speaking of which, the wine pairings were expertly curated, elevating each course and enhancing the overall dining experience. While the overall experience was nearly flawless, I would only consider removing a few tables to provide guests with more space. We found ourselves near neighboring parties, and a bit more breathing room would have added to the overall comfort. Virtue Restaurant exceeded my expectations in every aspect. The memorable dishes, impeccable service, and vibrant atmosphere have left an indelible mark on my culinary adventures. I will undoubtedly be returning to Virtue for another exceptional dining experience. Cheers to Virtue for creating a culinary haven that truly stands out!

My experience dining at Virtue was superb in every way! The short ribs, collard greens, cornbread, and even the carrots that came atop the catfish were splendid! Thank you for an amazing dining experience. It made my foodie heart glad. 😊

Love love love!!! Freddy was absolutely the friendliest server in the world, the Sazerac was smooth and delicious, I devoured the catfish, and the tartare was everything. Virtue is doing COVID right; this is the only restaurant I've been to doing temperature checks. Bottled water was given rather than tap and poured; loved everything about all the steps being taken. Please make sure to come out and support!

We have eaten at the restaurant on three occasions. While the food was good, the portions were way too small for the price. We would love to continue to patronize them but would love for th em to increase their portion sizes on food and drinks. It’s a shame we spent over $175 on one half bake chicken, one short ribs, one catfish entrees, one side of macaroni, greens, cornbread and two fried green tomatoes and was still Hungry after we finished eating.People don’t mind paying extra as long as when you’re finished with your meal you are not still Hungry. Very Disappointed!!!!

Cabbage on point, mac and cheese fire 🔥, fried green tomatoes with dill shrimp BABY, THE MOFO CHICKEN! Stop by and enjoy a little soulfood heaven! OKRA is one of the comfort foods i grew up eating and it was DELICIOUS 😋.

Went for the first time yesterday to try my first Quesobirria and holy cow, I was in for a treat! The birria was fresh and meaty, the queso was super cheesy and the consume was *chef's kiss* Just so, so good all around. The staff were super helpful and friendly. They also kept the ordering process short and sweet. The inside of tue restaurant was squeaky clean and everyone was wearing gloves and masks (correctly!) which made me feel at ease. 10/10, would totally visit again!

This place has some of the best birria I have tried by far. It has a great display and taste of every condiment you receive to the great service you get from their friendly waitresses. The only things that it needs is a better space to dine. It's a bit cramped but I think coming here for the food is worth it because let's be honest you go to a restaurant to eat right?

Overpriced for what I got. I received my 1 lb birria which was overcooked and a watered down consume which tasted like v8 vegetable juice. Big let down . To top it off, was close to 44$ for 2 people.

Delicious food and very nice dining area! The service was also good - we asked for more onion and lime, and the staff immediately gave us more, free of charge. We ordered two large plates - surtido (with bones and meats from different parts) and carnaza (only meats), and both come with tortilla, lime, onion, cilantro and soup. The meat was delicious and slightly dry at the same time. We still enjoyed it! It seems that they don’t sell some items during COVID - I was showing them a soup picture I saw on Google map, and they said that they didn’t serve it during COVID. Overall, a fun and nice experience!

Great restaurant. It's elevated soul food that tastes as good as your down south aunt's. Even with limited service during the pandemic, the quality has maintained it's high standards. Outdoor dinner reservations accepted starting at 4pm. Diners are allowed 90 minutes to make way for other patrons which is understandable since they can't utilize every table. The service is good and so are the cocktails! I wish Hyde Park would close the street to allow more outdoor dining and give Virtue more space.

Everything thing I ate was delicious and the drinks were amazing. This is the perfect place for any event/celebration. It is also highly recommended for a personal self-care day. Amazing food and drinks bring about simple joy from the inside out. :)

This was my second time dining at Virtue in Hyde Park. Its definitely a restaurant that has put creative thought into their menu and recipes. Pictured here is the short ribs and the salmon. Our table also ordered fried green tomatoes with shrimp remoulade, blackened catfish, cornbread and honey butter, collard greens and smoked turkey, mac and cheese and gizzards with rice. Everything was delicious. Salmon was a bit on the salty side for my taste but cooked well. Short ribs, catfish (spicy) fried green tomatoes and cornbread were favorites for me! Service was attentive and helpful.

Finally ventured down to Hyde Park to visit Virtue which has been on my list for years. I arrived at opening at 4 pm and was able to secure a seat at the bar. Happy Hour is only available in that area. The space quickly filled in. I started with a Hyde Park Sazerac, a catfish slider, and a cup of gumbo from the HH menu. For my main, I went with the Summer Squash and Buttered Grits. Everything I had was delicious, flavourful, and fresh. The summer squash caught my interest due to the hot-sauce pickled peppers. I wish I had the stomach space to eat more of the menu. Virtue is a beautiful space and I cannot wait to come back.

My husband and I celebrated Valentines Day at this upscale Black-owned restaurant. The food & drinks were excellent! The service was great! The atmosphere was beautiful. We've ordered shrimp and grits, raised ribs, mac and cheese, and fried green tomatoes. The food was absolutely delicious! Virtue was worth it. Jose (Mansger) knows how to make his guests feel welcome and time well spent. Our reservations were pushed back 20 min (due to the high demand on Valentines Day). I truly appreciate Jose providing champagne as a small gesture for the wait. Very nice touch!!! Also, I want to share my experience with our waiter, Anthony!! He's extremely informative and funny throughout our entire visit. When I say, I love my BLACK people! Thank you, Anthony, for the superb service!!

Truly an experience and a pleasure to dine! Everything I put into my mouth was absolutely delicious and creatively crafted. I went with a few friends and we wanted to try everything so we ordered the friend green tomatoes, chicken liver mouse toast, blackened catfish, short ribs, Mac and cheese, greens, cornbread, and carrot cake! We also had cocktails which were delicious as well. The reservations were so hard to get but the wait was certainly worth it. This is such a special place, with special food, and special vibes. Everyone of us was impressed and more than satisfied with every dish. Not to mention the service is exceptional and the old school tones in the back just added that extra touch of pure black excellence. Virtue sets itself apart. Definitely my new favorite restaurant! Will be returning soon.

We walked in and was told it may be an hour wait on a busy grad week but were able to get seated at the bar within 20 minutes. The atmosphere is casual and fun with flare of modern sophistication. The menu items offer a delicious variety of Southern options. We really enjoyed our choices of gizards served over dirty rice, the short ribs, mac n cheese, corn bread, and pineapple cake. Definitely worth a visit and a great way to support the community.

I think this place is fine, a little pricey. A few of the dishes I tried were not super impressive - not bad, just not very interesting in my opinion. I think they could afford to go a bit harder on flavor and seasoning.

Unbelievable establishment with unpretentious, but very thoughtful dishes. Everything from the wine list to the beautiful serving ware you can tell were picked with great care. Absolutely loved. The staff was awesome and made me feel very welcome. Great explanation of food and drinks. Food was seasoned to perfection..especially the catfish. Short ribs were so tender. Very pleased. Sat outside on the patio area but the area was very crowded so wish I would've chose inside instead. That's just a tip if you are looking for something more private cause outdoors with people constantly walking by and loud cars..anyway that didn't take away from the restaurant. Would definitely return. Warning on busy weekends parking is almost impossible so may be best to uber/lyft

I've eaten takeout on two different occasions and if the food is this so darn delicious takeout I can't imagine dining in. The food is fresh, and seasoned to perfection. I had collards, mac n cheese, sooo cheesy, and cornbread that taste like mom's only better!! The cheesy grits were smooth buttery with a hint of green onion, I could eat them for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I thought I was in New Orleans eating gumbo, spicy, meaty, heavenly. I can't say enough about Virtue, I can't wait to be able to experience indoor dining. Don't wait, the food is a total experience on its own!! 10 stars**********

  • 5/5 Jackson A. 3 years ago on Google
What a gem. The ambiance is great at the restaurant, but more importantly the food itself is ace. Creative menu of southern classics including blackened catfish, fried gizzards, greens, etc. My two favorite things I've had: a porkchop special I had 2 weeks ago that was so large it made two meals, and their incredible banana pudding. Full disclosure, I last ate there in person 8 months ago. Since then I have only gotten takeout. It's hard to capture the magic of an upscale restaurant with takeout, but somehow they manage to do it.

I just received a call at 9 pm the night before Thanksgiving from Shelby at Virtue that my items won’t be available because they weren’t supposed to be selling “a la carte” items. Really?? The day before Thanksgiving?? It’s also disingenuous because they’re quoted in a November 19th Chicago Tribune article emphasizing that “A la carte menu also available.” for thanksgiving orders — so which is it?? Really poor business practices.

I ordered some cornbread that serves 2 people for $16 and what they call an apple pie. I'm really unsatisfied what what I paid for. If I would have known I never would have come here, plus it took an hour to pick up my sides tonight. I'll need to go out somewhere else to supplement.

Food was great. Loved the gumbo; collard greens; fried green tomatoes; cheddar grits. Staff was very professional and friendly. Comfortable inside. But we did not appreciate the plastic water bottles automatically placed at our table; we requested plain glasses of water. From an environmental standpoint the plastic waste this generates is problematic. Clearly, a lot of thought, work and planning happens here. Would you consider a more environmentally friendly option rather than the disposable water bottles? Thanks!

Zaragoza is a highly recommend restaurant that is worth visiting. For a Saturday evening, there was no wait for a table in this small restaurant. The restaurant specializes in roasted goat served on or off the bone and goat consume. Amenities include cilantro, onions, tortillas, and house made hot sauce. You should purchase the roasted tomato sauce which will nicely flavor your tacos. Zaragoza's consume meets Culinary School standards. However, I expect aroma and flavor authenticity when I eat in an ethnic restaurant. As I hadn't eaten birrieria in a while, I had to evaluate my expectations before reviewing this restaurant by dining in another birrieria.

Edit: I have been patronizing this local establishment for many years. Unfortunately I had to change my 5 star review to a 1 star review until the owners of this establishment train their employees differently. The quality of the food is the same but within the past year have been skimping on the amount of meat give per order and the onions and limes that accompany the goat meat. I visited today and ordered a pound that costs almost $50. You would think you would get ample condiments for the price they charge. I asked for extra onion and they give two tiny containers. They used to give more lime and this time they gave two tiny wedges for a whole pound! If you have to charge extra to give extra condiments then charge extra but do not skimp! I will give this spot a couple more tries and if this isn't corrected I will no longer return as there are many good birria spots around Chicago. Until then, my review will stay at 1 star and sadly this establishment will be closed down just like the countless others have closed throughout covid19.

So, a local radio station turned me on to this joint (although technically I now reside in another state) and I'm very glad they did. The vibe here is intimate & trendy with soothing music piped in. As restaurants go I'll just say that it's size is relatively small although one must consider that the other side is dedicated just to the bar area alone. I reserved a spot for the Sunday evening b4 Christmas and it was crowded which is to be expected with a hot new eatery especially being located in Hyde Park. If you are familiar with the area then you know parking can be (and usually is) a nightmare but there are parking lots available around the corner. Upon entering, the wait time was less than 5 minutes which was appreciated considering I did have a reservation.

We had an excellent dinner at Virtue last night! Even considering the COVID-19 protocols, it was a great night out. The service was excellent and the team is clearly proud of their work. The bartender even came over to ask our thoughts on two new cocktails and he was clearly gushing with pride. Not-to-mention the food was stellar and homey! We had three courses including the Green tomatoes with shrimp, BBQ Pork Steak, Fried Catfishand finished the night with the best banana pudding.

Nice environment, if you like waiting 60min for food while you look at 6 workers on standby, literally standing behind a table in front of the kitchen, chatting and joking. I arrived at 6pm, asked about food at 645pm, left at 715pm with a TO-GO box. They were still standing there when I left. Will not revisit establishment.

The atmosphere is elegant, yet relaxed. Service needs some refinement. The pasta dish I had was mediocre. Dessert was incredible!

I've revised my review from a 1 star to a 3 star. We had attempted to order dinner using a gift card and were initially told the card would be accepted. After we had read the entire order and card number to the staff member she then told us they would not honor our gift card during the COVID-19 pandemic. While we fully understand companies have different policies in regards to their handling of dining in and curbside pick up during these uncertain times; we believe there should be something stating that gift cards will not be honored for the foreseeable future, whether that's on their website or making that clear at the time of purchase. That will help others who are potentially thinking about purchasing a gift card make a more informed decision. I have no doubt that the food is great and the service is as well, we've never been disappointed when dining there in the past and Joan was quick to reach out to me to work together on a solution. I appreciate her for that and her openness after we were declined to use the gift card.

The restaurant is very nicely decorated and the seating is quite comfortable. My friend and I each had an appetizer and an entree. We had the beet salad and lamb appetizers. The lamb was nicely spicey and very nicely cooked. The beet salad had very nice light flavors, they worked well together. The entrees were the sea bass and the lamb, both were cooked very well and delicious. As a bonus they had Blanton's which is not common. Our waiter was attentive for the most part. The only reason for not giving 5 stars was when we arrived, it took quite some time to be acknowledged let alone seated. We almost left, I am glad we didn't. I will go back if I am in the area again.

The food was great but have to give 3 stars due to price for what you get. No sides, no salad, no bread and oil. Update: the more i thought about it i decided to drop it to a 2 star. For the price the food should wow you. It was good but nothing amazing. Braised beef was like home cooked roast beef. Scallops were great but way over salted. It was disappointing after hoping for a nice meal for date night. If you read the owners responses, everything is a fake review and considered bullying. I think they need to take some responsibility and be able to handle bad reviews and work to make it better instead of excuses. A lot of potential here but only if the owner wants to.

Pleasantly surprised by the whole experience. The hostess Chasty was beyond personable and welcoming upon entering the establishment. I was treated to the half chicken with raisins and lemon pepper seasoning with sweet potatoes and brussel sprouts with a Ebony and Ivory cake for dessert. It was perfect, amazing artwork as well.

A little late in posting this review, but when the place we usually get our smoked turkey for Thanksgiving burned down, I was left scrambling for a bird two weeks out. To say Virtue delivered would be an understatement. The entire family declared it the best turkey we had ever eaten. I know a to-go turkey isn’t a regular menu item, but if their food and service are as good as it was in this experience, then this is an incredible place. I cannot wait to eat there after the pandemic.

Amazing service. Our server was extremely knowledgeable and made some great suggestions for both our food and cocktails. The drinks were all really unique and tasty. The food combined old school soul food with some nice modern twists. Most of all, the owner/manager Jesus was one of the gracious and kind people that I have ever met while dining out.

We booked for a first experience for Saint Valentines day. Recently installed in Chicago, we’ve heard about Virtue for a while way before we moved here and we liked the team’s background and the fact that they made effort to reopen the indoor service. As often for those special occasions only two imposed menues were offered. Generally, imposed menue are not the best to rank a restaurant but regarding the reduced offer of tables because of covid, I made my decision hoping that the Menu composition would meet the reputation. The oysters were great and new to me, although not very sustainable with this amount of not recycled salt. The cooking point was surprising and we did feel the southern influence in the seasoning. The salad was probably one of the biggest disappointment of the last 24 months for the standing of the place. I could have done better with my fridge left overs.. The main plates were good but pretty standards. I was weird out that the waitress was surprised when I asked if the Filet Mignon was Pork since it is the main used meat in the country where the dish comes from. Beef it was, good quality but again, nothing mind blowing, we were looking for the thing that was supposed to make this place special. Big thumb up for the pastry chef, great Cheesecake and one of the best chocolate truffles I had for a while. This saved the diner. We would be willing to try this restaurant again but with the possibility to choose à la carte options and with a high expectation to find what made this place a big deal.

It doesn’t matter how good the food is, if the customer service is horrific. My friends and I arrived to the restaurant and after we were seated, we ordered drinks. Before we could finish our first round, the waiter brought the check without even asking if we wanted another round, if we wanted water or if we were done ordering altogether. (We did notice folks of other skin color being served with more diligence) While we took offense to this, as we felt like we were being rushed and unattended to, we still stayed against our better judgement. We had $100 gift certificate that we wanted to use for our $60 meal. (We ordered appetizers for the most part) After calling the manager from the back and having what seemed like a 15 minute meeting, we were told by the waiter that the gift certificate would be honored. (As if they weren’t the establishment that sold the gift certificate to begin with.) and then the manager (a white male) had the audacity to tell us that the tip was not included. As if that’s not common knowledge. We are a group of young BLACK SUCCESSFUL women... and you don’t think we have the least bit of common sense to know that we have to leave a tip? And he didn’t even mention the balance left on the gift certificate, didn’t ask if we wanted to order more drinks.. didn’t ask how the food was. Nothing. Just walked off. Needless to say.... This place is ghetto..would not recommend.

Virtue Restaurant is a nice cozy place to eat. The signature short rib was outstanding. The corn bread and grits were delicious compliments to the meal. Wait staff was friendly and courteous. The restaurant has a 90-MINUTE TABLE LIMIT and the host seemed adamant on enforcing it.

I feel so lucky to have eaten at Chef Eric Williams’ restaurant. I remember reading food reviews of his work at MK & thinking how great it all sounded. And now that he has his own restaurant he is showing us all just how good food can be. We went to Virtue first for my Mother In Law’s birthday and it was so delicious and such a beautiful dining experience that it soon became a go-to for important celebrations. The prices are exactly what I’d expect for a fine dining experience. Try a cocktail! I so rarely do, always opting for a simple glass of wine but the The michoacan here has changed me. It’s not too sweet, but also not so strong that you can’t appreciate the flavors. It’s a perfect accompaniment. The salmon is one of the best dishes in the entire city, crispy and well seasoned over a bed of joy in the form of sweet corn and starbursts of okra. We were lucky enough to try the cucumber salad while it was still on the menu- if it comes back don’t miss it, it’s full of startling delicious surprises. The pork shoulder and beef short rib are both tender and delightful and you’ll wonder where they went when you’re done because they’re that good. Everything here is great to share, but you may need more than one - particularly the cornbread because you’re going to want some to take home with you. The same actually applies to the greens, which are amazing at the table but miraculous at midnight the night after dinner. I’m saying order more than you think you can eat. If you’re wrong you’ll be happy and if you’re right you’ll be happy. The last time we went, about 2 weeks ago, we all tried the peach cobbler - my Mother in Law declared it “to die for” and she’s not kidding. Days, weeks later you’ll still be thinking of it. If you have the chance to eat at Virtue, go right away. You’ll be counting the days till you are back!

Listen… I love this place HIGHLY recommend. I’ve been here multiple times and can say they are CONSISTENT. Atmosphere 10/10 The food 11/10 Lighting 9/10 Cleanliness 9/10 the blackened catfish, the greens, oxtail cornbread these people know what they are doing ALL EXCELLENT I love that the music is not too loud in the dining area but is louder in the bathroom for that moment of relief from the outside chatter. The bathroom is excellent by the way (they had tampons) it was pretty clean and well designed The entire place is cute design wise, well thought out and dripped in black excellence. We made a reservation. NO WAIT when we arrived haha and we were the last one for the night. Our dine did not feel rushed at all Service was good. The seating was not bad either it’s a wee bit tight in some areas but not bad at all

Overall great for my first time dinning at this Hyde Park jewel!! The Beef Short Ribs are other wordly!!! I HIGHLY recommend. Soft, juice and flavorful throughout. My husband said that the pork chop was amazing! Now the Mac and Cheese, decadent! A Creamy, cheesy, and flavorful experience for sure. I enjoyed the fact that the honey-buttered cornbread was now overly sweet. It sticks true to Mama's cornbread with a hint of sweetness. Then there's the collard greens and smoked turkey. Have mercy!!! The collards were fresh and clean. The smokey flavor reminded me of my grandmother's Mississippi potbelly stove. What a feast! It was noisy and you get to know your neighbors because of the seating arrangements. I would have liked a little more space between the tables.

They do not answer the phone! I don’t care the reason, it is BAD BUSINESS!!!! So, yesterday, I was hot because I needed to reschedule my reservation but they would not answer the phone so I gave the establishment a 1 ⭐️ rating. Since I couldn’t adjust the reservation, I arrived to the restaurant at the scheduled time. Once my guest arrived, we were seated immediately, which was nice because I was watching people enter & leave due to the 1hr wait for “Happy Hour” 😳 Once seated, our waiter (Philipe) was very attentive and hospitable. His server was great. The food is top notch. We enjoyed the fried green tomatoes with shrimp, the short rib and the catfish. For dessert, the ice box cake was a nice spin on key lime pie. Our drinks, Caribbean Summer and Cool as a Cucumber were great as well. I had a conversation with the manager, Brittany. She was very hospitable and took feedback very well. She gifted us another dessert, banana pudding! Thank you Brittany! I will visit again!

For our first visit to Virtue, we were there celebrating a birthday. I’m so glad we shared that with the entire Virtue team. The food was perfectly prepared, came out fast and hot. Our server Matthew was the definition of “Enlightened Hospitality”. His recommendations for both our food & beverage pairings were spot on. The atmosphere was a perfect blend of casual & high end, zero pretension. It felt like being at a loved ones home for a very special occasion. I can’t wait to come back with an even bigger group to share this experience with. Thank you Virtue for such a wonderful evening, count me as a new fan.
