the souvenir shop as seen in the photographs is awesome, the museum is a joke. fifteen bucks (another additional five for a less-than-useful audio guide) for a couple of rooms filled with enough script to simply publish a book for the same price at the door. the whole exhibition is very outdated.

I do not recommend going here. It is literally all text on walls that you can also find on Wikipedia. As a German I can say, this is a tourist trap and Berlin has much better museums to offer.

Skip it! I do not recommend this museum. If you do go, do not pay the $5 required for a picture license, it's a waste of money. It is a really expensive museum in a city that has great museums with much better exhibits. Unfortunately there was little to no thought on how visitors want to absorb information. They need to find a curator who can organize and reduce the amount of "stuff" they have. It's difficult to stay engaged with the material despite it being such an interesting topic. Also, the toilets they had available were poorly maintained and didn't have toilet paper. Overall, I was unimpressed.

The Checkpoint Charlie Museum (German: Das Mauermuseum – Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie) is a private museum in Berlin. It is named after the famous border crossing at the Berlin Wall and was created to document what was called "the best border security system in the world" (in the words of East German General Heinz Hoffmann). You can see the photos and related documents of successful escape attempts from the GDR as well as the escape devices: hot air balloons, getaway cars, chair lifts and a mini submarine. The museum researches and maintains a list of those who died at the Berlin Wall. It is run by Mauermuseum-Betriebs gGmbH, headed by Alexandra Hildebrandt.

Worst museum I've ever been to. Looks like they let 7-year-olds make posters on random topics and hung them up. I don't know what's the topic of the museum because there are sections about Gandhi, Vietnam, North Korea, world religions and other completely random stuff. Wouldn't even go there again for free. Didn't learn anything and would've been better off if I stayed at home on my couch watching a documentary.

There was too much to see. Hard to find the interesting things. Too much to read (a LOT of text) before the heat (bad ventilation) made your knees weak.

Poorly organized exhibit. I don't recommend this museum. There are better ones in Berlin that will cost you a lot less. This museum put me in information overload within 45 minutes. I love museums but this one I left before finishing the exhibit. There is no cohesive narrative storyline. You read something and the next thing on the wall is about something else. Sections are poorly defined and the link between sections is non-existent. The museum is huge, but hardly anyone seems to go until the end. This place is in dire need of an information professional to curate and organize everything. Less is more.

Information overload! Very text heavy and despite outside only being 16 degrees Celsius, the museum was very warm. Ladies toilets we're out of use and the smell of urine from the men's was very strong. There are far better museums in Berlin, which present the information in a more user friendly way for a fraction of the price.

The museum was a little pricey, but if you are looking for a great way to kill several hours while in Berlin and have an interest in history it is great. The museum was very large it did not contain as many artifacts as having pictures and lots of text, but I found it very enjoyable and they have displays which go into other conflicts such as the Korean War. Also an amazing gift shop. I highly recommend for those interested in history!!

This was a small museum. It was €17.50 for and adult and €9.50 for a child to get in. This price was more than the rest of our sightseeing for the day combined. There were some items related to Checkpoint Charlie and features on a few individual people. There was a good portion of the museum dedicated to new injustice in the world, including the war in Ukraine. We did not read every single display but felt we saw the whole museum in about an hour.

Do not enter! One of the worst museums i've ever been in my entire life! With that 17 euro i could have bought either 3 döner kebab or 4 currywurst. There is no a logic thorougt the path, full of random writings and some pics, i felt like in the holocaust memorial, lost.

A very in depth museum. There is a lot of information on the horrors of war and destruction as well as some gripping stories about life during the wall. For anyone wanting to learn about the history of the Berlin Wall this is an important place to visit.

Literarly the worst museum I’ve ever visited. There is so much tectvtonread about random history of different countries. No red thread, difficult to get an impression wjat the museum is actually about. I would expect more elements related to the Checkpoint Charlie, but it was very limited. Would not recommend.

I'd rather reading book than coming here... There is too many text exhibitions that are same font size. As a result, you can't figure out the main theme slide from these. Also the bad problem is there is no sitting place to take a rest despite of its huge amount documents. Furthermore, in the audio exhibition you'll see some of it don't equip headphone to listen. But the goods about historical event are interesting, so I recommend here to the person who want some more concrete things. If you can endure reading these goods explanations... P.S. I think the explanations on the wall near Checkpoint Charlie is enough to know the history and better because of less amount of text and charge free.

Great museum detailing events after the end of World War II and beyond the fall of the Berlin Wall including the recent conflicts in Syria and Ukraine. Although the Checkpoint Charlie area has become a bit of a tourist trap it is still well worth visiting due to the vast amount of information. Very informative, you can easily spend way over an hour in here.

A tip: don't pay for the audio guide. There is sooooo much reading to do here that you can't both listen and read at the same time. Also, there doesn't seem to be a logical order to the rooms or exhibits and you have to be choosy about what you read, because it gets confusing because it seems to jump between years and decades and individuals and issues and events. I think literally every question that could ever be asked about the Wall, the check points, life in East Berlin, the smugglers, the politics, geography and anything else about the Cold War era is answered, somewhere, in this museum. The artifacts are really amazing. I would have rated higher if there was a logical order to the rooms and markers on the walls or floors to tell you where to go next. Even if things were moved around to represent a different decade per floor, or per side of a floor, it would make more sense and be more cohesive. I felt overwhelmed with all the things to read, and when I finished one Board and started the next and then the next, I was jumping back and forth in time. It is interesting though, and in some spots, very moving. I found the two rooms dedicated to Syria and Ukraine very very moving and emotional. Germany should be so proud of how they have handled and helped in these crises. The human rights exhibits were wonderful. I love the view from the room with all the windows, of the check point and building across the street and square with the panorama. It felt odd though that there was such propaganda towards Ronald Reagan in one of the rooms, especially given the rooms for human rights and non-violence on either side of the "Reagan room", and his record of treatment of American prisoners and the LGBTQ community during the AIDS epidemic in the 80s... anyway. You could spend hours and hours here. It's worth the ticket, but not the ticket plus the audio guide.

Lots of stuff to read and learn about at this museum. Unfortunately we only had an hour and that was definitely not enough to read and learn about everything. Even though you might think it's a little overpriced, it's way bigger than expected. It does not only cover the Cold War and the Berlin Wall, but also current events which are the result of both. Overall, recomendable to adults but not to children.

Interesting exhibition, a lot of information but incredibly outdated. The rooms are also too small for the amount of people they let in (expecially for corona times). They should close this building for a year and do some serious rennovations since this is an important museum in Berlin with historic information that deserves a better representation.

It’s a bit of a race against the clock to read the amount of text. A lot of information which is put throughout a massive exposition. Won’t recommend with children. Place does need an technical upgrade as 90% of interactive items are not working.

An excellent museum. Visited here twice once in 1987 prior to the Berlin wall coming down and then in later years. It has not changed much and should not. What a great history lesson of humanitarian struggles through the war. Ukraine no doubt will have similar war museums in the coming years. This museum is a must see when in Berlin.

Chaotic and messy. There is so much text to read that is almost impossible to read it in one single day. The information is interesting but it's way too hard to read it and the museum seems like it has infinite rooms. With a good rework it would be a great museum but by now, it will only grant you a headache.

I was very disappointed with the museum. It was very expensive for an adult ticket just to read a lot of text on the walls. I wasn’t told audio guides were available and the tv’s within the museum weren’t working. There’s no structure to the museum and it’s very dated and hard to follow.

Mega disappointed, I used to always bring my friends here when they visited Berlin but this was the last time. Firstly the entrance now costs €17,50! The most expensive museum in Berlin. A lot of the stuff is missing, the bottom floor is basically now a shop, timelines are totally mixed up and at the end two big rooms dedicated to the recent war in Ukraine, not sure what the link is to the division of Berlin after WWII?!

Tourist trap! A lot of unrelated texts with a lot of pictures. Lack of depth, or personalised stories.. Some of the (rare) artifacts on how people tried to escape East Berlin are quite interesting, but they are only a handfull. Low value for the extremely steep admission price. Spend your money and time wisely - go to one of the many really interesting museums in Berlin, not this one.

If you're visiting Berlin, skip it. It was the most expensive museum we went to at €17.50 each but it was by far the poorest. It's quite cramped, there's not much rhyme or reason to the order of all of the boards. It's a bit like they just threw in everything they possibly could, regardless of what it is. It's quite old too and doesn't look like it's been maintained very well at all. Considering the sheer amount of free and low cost museums that are far better quality, I'd recommend you give this a miss and go and see the Story Bunker or the Jewish Museum.

It's starts off in a fairly logical order, but then the museum goes all over the place, covering things like human rights and present day wars. I left far more confused about the wall than I did going in. Also way too much text to read and it's often hidden in lots other text so you don't even know where to read

(Translated by Google) We went with great expectations and were very disappointed. The rooms are literally pasted up with text, which is incredibly tiring. All texts are in DE, ENG, FR and RUS, but some things could have been designed differently. There are also many paintings and sculptures in the museum that we would rather look for in an art museum than here and seem rather disturbing. We think the subject of the wall and checkpoint would be enough space! One room only goes over the US press presidents Reagan and Mahatma Gandhi. Both personalities but do you have to show them here ??? The interior looks like nothing has been done since it opened. The chairs and the floor look like from my school days and that was 25 years ago! The text board could also be made more modern! Were previously in other museums, which are technically much more modern and also more clearly arranged! There are many screens in the museum on most of them but there is no sound! Also something to try out a replica of an escape tunnel to climb through e.g. would not be bad! We would not recommend the museum !!! What is offered does not correspond to what you pay for! There are other places in Berlin e.g. "Berlin Underworlds" which show the topic much more interesting and worthwhile!

This museum disappointed me, it could do so much better. There are a few interesting things to see, but overall it just feels like someone printed out Wikipedia pages and put them on a wall. Tons of text, no real structure and many things not functioning properly (screens, lights). Save yourself the time and money and don't visit.

Great museum in a fantastic location. The exhibits are extremely comprehensive and will give visitors a real tour-de-force of Berlin's history with its infamous wall. What creates an especially deep impression are all the attempts to escape Communism and flee to the West. Many of these flights to freedom were inventive and dangerous. You'll spend at least an hour at this museum and be fascinated during the whole time.

OK it’s a tourist trap and quite expensive but they do have some interesting exhibits and certainly have a lot of details around the wall and Cold War. My only issue is that it’s a bit hiddeldy piggeldy, stuff about the 60s next to the current Ukraine conflict and then back to the 80s then something else. Needs to be in chronological order or subject matter to make sense.

More expensive than anything else in the city. The exhibition is rather ild style, can use a refresh, especially on the narrative, which is a bit absent, it is rather a sequence of stuff. Paradoxically the shop is much more modern, well lit and organized. The feeling is that the museum needs to be reformed heavily, but the contant and the memorabilia it contains are worth.

Tolles, eindrucksvolles Museum.

Good museum. I really miss that you tell about the NEW WALL (the one in Israel/Palestine). There is a direct link here. The Allied defeated the Nazis. The jews got Israel (Back) The palestinians pay the Price. Everyday. Noone dares to critisies Israel, fearing to be judged as antisemistic, but it would make perfectly sence with a timeline of the Berlin Wall to the Zionistic Wall. That new Wall creates the same misery that the Old one did. And worse.

You've been warned, if you don't like to read or not a fan of history, give this a miss. Checkpoint Charlie is an iconic symbol of the division of Germany. In 1961, as East Germany is building a wall, you find American tanks stationed here. At the same time, resistance fighter Rainer Hildebrandt is building the Mauermuseum. Its mission: to catalogue escape plans as well as support escape attempts. Now the Mauermuseum is known for its extensive collection of items from 30 years of history, such as cars and hot air balloons that tell the stories of how successful escapees did it. Overnight in 1961, the East German authorities start building a wall through Berlin. For the next 30 years, it's not just the dividing line between capitalism and communism, but also between families. Stretching for over 155 km and equipped with watchtowers, the Wall seals off West Berlin. Refugees from the East start to arrive in West Berlin, and Rainer Hildebrandt starts to record their stories, starting the museum in his flat in 1962. A year later, the museum relocates to a building immediately adjacent to Checkpoint Charlie. Hildebrandt's museum soon becomes a focal point for escapees, helpers, journalists and protesters. Helpers provide the Checkpoint Charlie house with vehicles, tools and personal mementos. Innovative and full of information - this is the impression you get from the Mauermuseum - Haus am Checkpoint Charlie today. Take a look through the inventive methods people have used to escape from the GDR, such as a concealed luggage compartment in a VW car, a mini-submarine, a hot air balloon and a collapsed suitcase. Some of these methods actually work, and you can see how at the museum. The museum is also a gallery where international artists like Hannah Höch and Bulatow exhibit their works. Permanent displays look beyond Berlin and Germany with titles such as From Gandhi to Walesa, NATO Mission for Freedom and Raoul Wallenberg Lives.

By the early 1950s, the Soviet method of restricting emigration was emulated by most of the rest of the Eastern Bloc, including East Germany. However, in occupied Germany, until 1952, the lines between East Germany and the western occupied zones remained easily crossed in most places. Subsequently, the inner German border between the two German states was closed and a barbed-wire fence erected. Even after closing of the inner German border officially in 1952, the city sector border in between East Berlin and West Berlin remained considerably more accessible than the rest of the border because it was administered by all four occupying powers. Accordingly, Berlin became the main route by which East Germans left for the West. Hence the Berlin sector border was essentially a "loophole" through which Eastern Bloc citizens could still escape. The 3.5 million East Germans who had left by 1961 totaled approximately 20% of the entire East German population. The emigrants tended to be young and well educated. The loss was disproportionately great among professionals — engineers, technicians, physicians, teachers, lawyers and skilled workers.

(Translated by Google) The museum is chaotic. The stories are good and the staff unfriendly. In short, a waste of the information that can be found there. (Original) Het museum is chaotisch. (Translated by Google) Basically a lot of and above all interesting information and stories about the wall. It would probably take a whole day to find out everything. Basically, however, the common thread is missing, especially on the upper floors. The museum is only partially suitable for children, as there are many text panels and exciting exhibits are not always self-explanatory for the children.

(Translated by Google) ... we visited this museum today. Positive experience but not excellent. Frankly I wouldn't feel like recommending it. It is a set of giant posters that tell the daring attempts to escape from East Berlin. Rather scruffy museum with not too many interesting things. The cost of the ticket (14.50 euros for adults and 7.50 euros for children - 5.00 euros for a single audio guide) are many for this kind of museum. Frankly I was expecting a little more while it seemed to me, all of it, rather contrived and forced.

(Translated by Google) I recommend buying a Polish audioguide (unless someone likes to read a LOT in a foreign language). There is a lot of text at the exhibition, a lot of photos, some exhibits. I believe that there is much more to gain with an audio guide. Agree a bit chaotic at times but I found it worth a visit. The museum has been open for a long time, and due to the pandemic also fewer visitors, so the visiting comfort is greater.

Great museum with a lot of information on events post WW II. Got a lot of insight into the life and struggles of people during GDR regime. Definitely worth spending ~2 hours.

  • 2/5 Petr 2 years ago on Google
A lot of interesting info and facts, very unstructured and disorganized though. I expected nicely explained the whole history, interesting facts and how went the daily in the city,... Understand the space is limited but honestly you can just replace the exhibition in the upper floor which is not connected to Berlin Wall. Price: 14,5 EUR.

Complete tourist trap for €14. Exceptionally poor in how it's curated and organized. English translations are very poorly done and most don't even make sense. Avoid!

A very interesting museum but there is a bit to much information to absorb it all. The museum also has a part which talks about current world politics and the Korean war which was a bit to much removed from the check point Charlie story for me

14.5 Euro feels like ripp-off. Not much to see, too much to read. And you may as well read it in your mobile phone if you care to look for it. The souvenir shop extends the ripp-off.

  • 5/5 Dmytro C. 2 years ago on Google
Can't say anything about the museum. The souvenir shop is quite nice though. Bought there the gifts for my family. The prices are very fair and the selection of products ls wider than that of the nearby shops. The clerk was a friendly and polite guy who took the mask thing quite seriously (in a good way, obviously).

It's like a competition to see how much text you can read before dying. The curation makes no sense at all. Walls full of essays

  • 2/5 Silvia Y. 1 year ago on Google
Kinda boring, the museum is covered by texts, so if you really like reading a lot, maybe it is your place, but if you rather see and hear also, I def recommend the DDR museum or the Black box exhibition right outside (free). It was hard to navigate in the museum, because it was not well organized and felt messy. You get tired very fast, so not worth the money.

  • 2/5 Andreas I. 1 year ago on Google
Lots of information in text format but the presentation and layout could be so much better. Wall after wall of text and photographs. And adult with lots of time could probably learn a lot but the place was super crowed with school classes with teenagers, leaving the audio guide barely usable since the volume was too low, even on highest setting..

  • 1/5 francois j. 1 year ago on Google
The museum itself is ok, but the area is filled with with bad elements and the German Polizei is absolutely inefficient and either do not care about tourists or are simply naive - bottom line, useless. Tourists beware of this area, Polish and Russian thieves and pickpockets. Picture is a member of a syndicate operating at Checkpoint Charlie. They operate in a group of 5-8 and are in between the crowds. No police on foot in sight!

There was a lot of reading, yes. But it was very informative, has pretty much every historical event since WWII in it. I spent almost two hours in there, and I didn’t even look at everything. It was also very current, Ukrainian and Syrian exhibitions. If you’re looking for something more interactive, then this place is probably not for you, but if knowledge is what you want, this place has plenty. 11.50€ for student ticket One thing I found a bit odd was the movie viewing room. I’m sure the movies were interesting-they weren’t all just documentaries- but nobody goes to a museum to sit and watch a movie, no matter how interesting they are.

  • 2/5 Zuzana K. 9 months ago on Google
Old fashioned museum which requires a lot of unnecessary reading. Although, the texts aren’t only about Berlin Wall, they provide general overview of 20 cent. history, which is known to Europeans. The biggest disappointment, however, was the gift shop. In the heart of this city, in appealing souvenir store, without any sign of regret or self judgment, the cashier intended to rob us 10 €. We knew that the price was 10€ lower than he asked us to pay. We noticed that obviously, because that is not a particularly small difference! HE DID NOT EVEN APOLOGIZE ! He just gave us the banknote back and pretended that NOTHING HAPPENED, looking obviously disappointed that we noticed.

  • 1/5 Ellie 10 months ago on Google
Literally just thousands of panels of text that are poorly written and extremely biased. A lot of the information barely relates to the Berlin Wall and is so biased that it feels more like an Anti Communist Museum. There are very few artifacts here and they are often not annotated or dated. Definitely a tourist trap.

A ton of information in a huge exhibition sharing interesting information about Germany’s history. However the rooms can feel packed and small with all the exhibits and information tables.

A nice idea but did not reached my expectations at all. The restrooms are so dirty and not cleaned that I was not going to the toilet inside. It’s not worth a visit. The story about Ukraine should not be part of the museum. I also missed the storyline through the museum. I found it all mixed up and it was not worth the price. Wish it was better done and presented.

The only desire after this “museum” is to take a shower. I am not talking about dirty toilets and dusty exposition, but about absolute lie in half of the texts. If this is a private museum, I regret that the life of owner is full of detestation and hate.
