Very welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable. The staff were all very proud of their delightful re-furbished shop and reception. Our second visit, and the museum just gets better !!!

This is a wonderful little museum, very family friendly and with lots of interest! Plenty to see and enjoy in the museum, but the tour is extra special! Getting to see the inner workings of jewellery making in the 50s and 60s was a real eye opener, and our wonderful tour guide gave lots of additional interesting tidbits and demonstrations. A nice range of gifts too, from 25p for a little cut out of a dog (which you see the guide do!) to high end jewelry from a number of designers. Highly recommended for a morning or afternoon in Birmingham

Very interesting place, a must place to visit on anyone's list of venues to visit while in Birmingham

Absolutely fantastic. The guides are wonderful and really bring the place alive with their story telling, and the museum itself a fascinating place to step into; like it's been frozen in time. If you're visiting Birmingham (or you live here and have never visited) this is an absolute must-see attraction. Book a tour around the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter and experience what it was like to work in the Smith and Pepper jewellery factory in 1899. The building remains exactly as it did since the day the factory closed for good, the workers tools left sprawled on the work benches with jewellery littering the shelves. The museum tells the story of Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter, including a demonstration of jewellery making techniques, and a tour around the actual factory itself.

A great little museum. William the tour guide was excellent - very entertaining and interesting. An hour well spent. Lovely and warm as well, which is what you want in February. It was almost eerie to see the papers and machines how the last workers left them in the 80s. It really brought the era to life for me. Good selection of coasters in the gift shop.

Closed! No info whether it will reopen properly. Poor advert for Brum.

What a treasure! This museum is absolutely fascinating and the hour long tour is a bargain at just £7. Judy our guide was really informative and really brought the former jewellery manufacturers to life!

Amazing insights into jewellery making in the heart of the jewellery making industry of the UK. A real time capsule as the factory is as it was left in 1981...untouched

Really interesting step back in time. They provide brief tours that provide a thorough background of the era and the people who worked at and ran the jewelry factory. It also includes several demonstrations using the antique equipment to make simple jewelry right in front of you! I’m really glad I went and recommend it.

Had English Heritage tour with previous owner but all tours follow same experience. Excellent place and absolutely fascinating. Toilets, no shop, no refreshments so take a bottle of water if you need to as tour might take at least 1.5 to 2 hours. Good 'caff' on the main road for a drink etc if you are early for a tour. Wear flat shoes, it's a factory so its not clean.

If you can get on to a tour, it's very interesting, especially if you like run down urbex type places.

  • 5/5 Ros H. 5 years ago on Google
NB You need to book and pay for the visit in advance. It is well worth it. The tour takes around an hour and a half and it is fascinating. Our guide was an extremely knowledgeable volunteer. The factory is as it was left in the early 21st century and provides a snapshot of the work done there over the preceding 100 years or so. We'll worth booking.

(Translated by Google) A friend and I visited the Jewelery Quarter Museum and were very impressed. It is highly commendable that great care was taken to put everything in place "as is" and have it checked by previous staff. We were warmly greeted by the staff and Birmingham would use it if it wasn't for our timeline. nice cafe noticed. The first floor has a wonderful collection of silverware, jewelry and other precious items. There is also a fascinating "natural resources" exhibition for jewelry making on the second floor. However, please don't miss the chance to be guided through the factories and offices by excellent guides.

Fantastic time capsule - excellent tour (led by Rachel, I think) of a factory that is just as it was left after its last shift clocked off and went home. That happened, I believe, in 1981, but because it's a factory that hadn't been updated to nineteen eighties standards (due to the owners being so elderly and stuck in their ways), it gives an insight into a much earlier bygone age. Very good indeed!

The museum of the Jewellery Quarter was a pleasant surprise, a real gem! The tour guide gently talked us through the history of the company on which the museum is established today (Smith and Pepper, a jewellery manufacturing firm which traded between 1899 and 1981). The tour visit tells the daily life of the workers of companies like S&P, mixed with information on society and customs at the time, and - of course - many details about the specific task of the jewellers who worked there. The tour guide even shared some jewellery techniques while sitting at the same table where the company employees did it back in their time!. Beautiful and dedicated tour, which can be continued in a self-guided manner in the various exhibition rooms available within the same building.

(Translated by Google) Never go there especially on the last visit, the guides speak very very quickly, even with good English it is difficult to understand, they watch their watches all the time, and very expensive for what it is better to go at the pen museum or at coffin works which are much more interactive and interesting museums! Went in a group of four. There were 6 others on the tour. Our guide was a historian by trade but led the tour very ably and interestingly. Knowledgable about the Smith & Pepper Co. Showed the interesting parts of the factory. Didn't labour points or hit us with masses of facts. Showed good skills at the work benches, kept up a good pace and kept the talk entertaining and light humoured. Certainly highlighted the repetitive, skilled, health hazards and divisive aspects of the jewellery trade. £7 well spent and an entertaining and informative 40minutes. Museum is easily accessed from the Jewellery Quarter tram station stop.

so my wife decided she wanted to go. brilliant..first mistake was deciding to walk. if you follow google maps it is the most direct but boring 30 min walk from town centre. so either get a cab, or wander down the high street. from the outside i was sure i was going to be having a ball, a bit like being dragged round priarmi.. BUT, it was awesome! the guide was engaging and knowledgeable, the insights were fascinating. But the best bit was the continual realisation that this work place had been abandoned with everyone just leaving one afternoon. I realise some artistic license is involved but even my 15yr old daughter appeared vaguely interested...

Small as expected, probably. Historic house, feels crowded even in small group. More talking than actual sightseeing... So you should be really interested into early 20th century jewelry making if you want to come.

I went on one of the guided tours and I really enjoyed it. The guide was amazing and I learned an incredible amount. The demonstration was very interesting and I really like how everything was in exactly the same place as it was in 1981.I would really recommend visiting this museum especially with children.
