Even though we did not book online for the free entry, it was a breeze to enter the museum. On 4 Jan 2021, 2:45 pm, a young lady service counter staff was very good n patient to explain the exhibits layout and orientate visitors w reference to map on the brochure. Great job! 👍 Enjoy the museum visit thoroughly as the explanation for the exhibits are very clear and easy to understand without too many scientific jargons. If only there were more time to spend at the museum. Great for family with kids as children are also the target audience.

Came for the Grayson Perry exhibition which was excellent. We had never been to the museum before and had a lovely time wandering around looking at all the exhibits. There is a wide range of different art styles and exhibits on display with lots of interesting local history too! Very extensive collection of taxidermy animals. We bought tickets in advance online and did not have to wait long to get in.

The building is stunning. It is absolutely worth a visit just to admire the amazing architecture of the building which, I think, is part of the University of Bristol. In terms of the artefacts and exhibitions in this museum, they have an exhaustive collection that are very well kept. However, if you have visited museums across Europe, you may struggle to find something out of the ordinary. Great visit for the kids though. The cafe downstairs is quite nice. Do book in advance online, else you might have to queue for a long time like we did. It is free, but it’s best recommended you book a time slot the day before your visit. I would say if you are in Bristol, you cannot afford to miss this.

Admission is free, and you can explore a wide variety of art, natural history, and historical exhibits within this beautiful museum building. It features a range of exhibitions, from Ancient Egypt to art spanning the 15th century to contemporary works, as well as displays on natural history, dinosaur fossils, and Earth minerals. To make the most of your visit, it's a good idea to set aside enough time. I had a great time during my visit!

I’ve been here twice now and I’ve loved the museum and gallery both times. I think the gallery interests me a lot more than the museum area, but if I had children I think they’d find many of the museum exhibitions very exciting. There are a variety of paintings and in different styles, some of the rooms are filled with portraits and the feeling that they are all looking at you (especially when you are alone) is very intense. Their gift shop has postcards and prints of many of the more significant paintings in the gallery, such as La Belle Dame Sans Merci which was there in all its romantic grandeur. It’s worth going here for a date or simply with your friends.

Went to see Grayson Perry Exhibition some was hidden amongst artifacts in the museum so following the trail meant looking closer at other art. GP Exhibition was brilliant and the commentary by each exhibit was so uplifting and often made me tearful. Cafe was reasonable but one member of staff less so. Staff in the exhibit areas very helpful. Shop expensive but lovely items.

A fantastic museum to visit. I've been coming here for over 35 years, since I was little, and my parents the same before that. Firstly the building is stunning. Worth a visit just to see that. It's quite a older style museum with less of the more modern interactive exhibits you see elsewhere. But they do a fantastic job of rotating exhibits and getting in guest exhibits so it's rarely the same between each visit. Also has a nice cafe and fantastic play area for the children. Very much worth the visit.

Such a lovely 2 hours spent at the Museum. Free entry but you can donate if you want. I had a look at the Japanese Netsuke exhibition, which was beautiful. I learned some very interesting facts about Japanese and Chinese mythology and culture. Highly recommend. Also saw the Chinese ceramics part, English glass and some of the paintings on floor 2. Definitely plan for a long visit if you want to see everything. Lovely staff, great gift shop. 1 pound (non-refundable) for lockers.

Very big museum close to the center of Bristol. No reservations needed and there is no entrance fee. There are several exhibitions, all very interesting. There is a minerals section, a dinosaur section and a whole floor with animals. You also have a cup of coffee inside. There is a bookstore where you can find some books about banksy. It's a nice museum for kids too (many activities and it's very interesting for them too). I totally recommend it.

Loved it and free (and warm) Some remarkable fossils, topical display on Mary Anning, lots of natural history and other sections. Could have spent much longer. Great for children and a remarkable cafe. Thank you Bristol

I visit regularly. The grandchildren have a good time and enjoy exploring the whole building. Staff are helpful and the education team have been really helpful. As the children are young we stay for a couple of hours. The dressing up area and Doris are particular hits. Always something new for the grandchildren to discover.

The designated collections include: geology, Eastern art, and Bristol's history, including English delftware. In January 2012 it became one of sixteen Arts Council England Major Partner Museums. The museum includes sections on natural history as well as local, national and international archaeology. The art gallery contains works from all periods, including many by internationally famous artists, as well a collection of modern paintings of Bristol. In the summer of 2009 the museum hosted an exhibition by Banksy, featuring more than 70 works of art, including animatronics and installations; it is his largest exhibition yet. It was developed in secrecy and with no advance publicity, but soon gained worldwide notoriety. The building is of Edwardian Baroque architecture and has been designated by English Heritage as a grade II* listed building. The standard opening hours are: Tuesday – Sunday, 10am–5pm. The museum is also open 10am-5pm on Bank Holiday Mondays and Mondays during Bristol school holidays.

Really lovely to be able to come back here! I last attended some years ago, and this time we took our time looking at all the exhibits - which are fab! And exploring the various sections of the museum, which is also far bigger than I remembered and housed in a stunning building in a lovely location. Luckily it's near my office, so I may even pop in on a lunch break one day if I can! Perhaps when restrictions are lifted, I wouldn't want to take up a booked slot when somebody else could use it and spend more time taking in all the amazing objects and information.

A very fascinating museum indeed. From prehistory, Egyptian history to contemporary art, this museum has it all. There are lots of history and science to marvel upon here. There’s also a sitting room downstairs for people to chill. There’s also a special exhibition going on usually. I would definitely recommend a whole day at this museum & gallery to be able to see it all. The admission is free and this place is definitely worth the visit.

We visited this museum yesterday. The entry is free but you have to book your tickets online to reserve your slot to minimise overcrowding due to Covid 19. They also expect donations from visitors to run the place successfully. We loved this gorgeous building and the spirit of the place. My son enjoyed most the Egyptian (ground floor) and the animal (plus bird) section on the 2nd floor. The animal section has a collection of stuffed animals including extinct ones. We also saw a Pangolin which is currently famous for it's link with Covid-19 pandemic. We also loved to see different types of dinosaurs. There is a food hall at the back of the ground floor which we found very neat and clean. However, I think that food is costly here. There are some benches all around the museum where people can take rest and toilet facility is in the middle of the ground floor. They were clean and I was able to use them without any queue. Overall, it is place where you can spend a valuable two hours time and gather some knowledge about the world and it's inhabitants.

A really good museum, especially if it's your first visit to Bristol. Takes 2-3 hours to go around, may be more or less than that depending on how much you stop. Some displays and descriptions are very old, but wasn't a problem, as I'm not an expert in areas displayed. The museum presents a mix of natural history and art. The ground floors covers ancient Egypt; first floor was about dinosaurs and later (more modern) animals. The top second floor displays art. There is pottery and glasswork. Also there are paintings, which seem to be mixed in terms of their age: a Reinessance painting can be located next to a 21 century one. I ended up skipping most of the top floor, because paintings are unstructured and mixed. I would rather not see modern art in that museum, it didn't look like it belonged there at all, hence 4/5 There is the angel sculpture by banksy on display right after you enter.

Went to see Grayson Perry’s Art Club exhibition, had a great Wednesday afternoon. Staff at the front door were super helpful and chatty, and I liked how you booked time slots to spread visitors out - it’s for Covid but actually it just makes the visitor experience better because it’s not as crowded. I’ve seen queues outside on weekends but on a weekday we went straight in. You can book a free time slot or pay a donation online, it’s amazing we have access to brilliant culture from £0 upwards. The exhibition was spread out around the museum, with most of it on the ground floor and some other pockets elsewhere on the upper floor. I didn’t mind this as I don’t have mobility issues, but I did hear other people having some concerns about steps. There were some fab pieces that made me think, and reflected feelings that I’d had about lockdown, and I was blown away by the artistic talent that the British public has. The museum cafe is fine, good range of cakes and coffee, I didn’t look at meals or savouries this time. While we didn’t visit it this time, there’s a kids’ area that my 3 year old daughter loves, alongside Dino skeletons upstairs, so she enjoys a trip to the museum as well. Remember your pound coin for the locker if you have wet coats or big bags, the locker eats the coin and doesn’t return it, so trolley tokens are no good and who carries coins nowadays?? Overall a lovely trip, we been lots of times before and will return many more times. Good work Bristol Museum.

Went to see the Grayson Perry ‘Art Club’ exhibition which was amazing by itself, but to have all the other exhibitions to see as you meander through is fantastic value. Free entry but we were more than happy to buy tickets to support this. Everyone there, young and old, seemed to really be enjoying it. There is a cafe as well and the food looked great!

Excellent and free city museum. The building itself is absolutely beautiful. A prime example of Victorian era architecture. Set over several floors this has something for everyone. The fine arts collection is impressive with some notable artists on display which gives a sense of grandeur. The Japanese porcelain collection is worth a look too. If you like history the Egyptian exhibition is excellent, informative and interesting. Quite impressive for a smaller UK city. There are also dinosaur fossils on display as well as a prehistoric section. The standout has to the replica airplane hanging from the ceiling. Quite a sight! A great way to spend an hour or two

A really good morning out. Took my 9-year-old into Bristol (park at West Gate Street) to check it out and he loved the Egyptian, dinosaur and animal exhibits and took interest in the others and at gallery. It is a grandiose building, with since impressive architecture and history, and certainly bigger than you might think from the outside. When you get to the upper levels there are several rooms that aren't obvious from the ground floor. The café is reasonably priced and of course the museum is free (donations welcomed). If I were to offer one peace of constructive feedback it'd be to run something like a quiz/treasure hunt to keep the kids engaged (it's possible this exists and we missed it though).

A great visit to a museum that has a lot of variety and it's free! Parked on west steet car park and walked over about a 5-10 minute amble. Took us around 1hr 30 to visit the whole museum. Great exhibitions we particularly liked the natural history, animals etc. Some beautiful natural exhibitions on display and very well curated and put together rooms. Interactive bits to keep the kids entertained and a great variety of things to see. Toilets and a cafe on site and an ample seating area too. Gift shop is pricey as you'd expect but they stock a unique range and some independent stockists too which was nice to see. Overall a great visit.

There are 4 floors easily excessable to by either stairs or a disabled lift. Disabled toilets by the cafe and shop on the main floor with lockers if you need them for a £1 coin slot. The best for free museum I have been to. Even one of my favourites if we did have to pay. There are many of interesting things to see. From dinosaurs to glass bottles and paintings. There is a large group of dead animals that is very cool and interesting to look at. So two thumbs up from me for this cool museum 😎👌

A beautiful building in terms of architecture, full of amazing historical pieces as well as art. Particular stand outs are the Egyptian exhibition, dinosaur fossils & the beautiful art galleries upstairs. We decided to arrive early in the day and had the museum to ourselves for the entire duration (about 2 hours). Highly recommend visiting if you're in Bristol.

I have visited the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery twice now to see two exhibits and enjoyed my visit both times. Not only have I taken in the exhibit I went to see but also got to see the rest of the museum and gallery. This is great is you have kids, if you are a nature, history or art lover, there is bound to be something for you. There is also a nice café in which you can grab a drink and a bite to eat. The gift shop too is nice and you can grab something to remember your trip if you are that way inclined. I mostly like to take as many photos as is allowed and do some sketching if possible. To visit the Museum and gallery itself I believe is normally free, with different paid exhibits being hosted there at different times of the year. The photos below are not of the wildlife photographer of the year as you were not allowed to take photos. They are of the southwest coast exhibit and some other exhibits on when I visited. This included a great section on dinosaurs that if you have any little ones that are fans of dinosaurs, they would have loved. It is only a small section but they have real fossils, some really big ones and this leads directly into the natural history part with all the other stuffed animals. It is very interesting. A definite must see if you are visiting Bristol.

While the museum had some amazing animals featured and some amazing Egyptian artifacts. It felt like it was full of "filler" creatures. It was still amazing to see all the animals of course but it would've been very cool to see a mammoth to scale. Nonetheless, the place had some cool fossils too which were very impressive. The only downside was really the fact that there wasn't enough content. It had a cool shop and a café so enjoy :) Definitely recommend a visit!

Like most museums there's an Egypt section, animals, and planes but what sets this apart was the fascinating look into the evolution of Bristol's cartography. A collection of maps that show the changes through the years. Mshed refers to a lot of these, but I loved seeing the original. I also thoroughly enjoyed all the artworks from the 1800s of Bristol. I went first thing on a Sunday morning and walked around the galleries on my own.

There is so many exhibitions to see we didnt give yourself enough time (2hrs) and will be back for more!!! Museum has improved since our last visit in 2011 and is a fantastic way to spend family time with fussy teenagers and family. And it doesn't cost a penny. After a nice time exploring there is plenty of original cafes and restaurants to go to as well as fantastic walk. Very recommend

Very diverse and varied galleries. The lockers were helpful. Quite a few of the sound displays didn't work. We really enjoyed the local wildlife display and contemporary art. I liked the philosophy questions, but looked like the voting interactions weren't working. We spent all day here, but had to go out at lunch as the cafe was full and didn't have a vast dairy free choice. The toilets were busy a lot of the time. Very impressed this was a free location. I'd suggest a contactless payment donation point more visbale to the entrance.

This is a really good museum. So much to see here. I loved the animal part, learnt a lot there. Free entry which is lovely, a donation is welcome and I was more than happy to. The staff were very helpful, the displays were clean and clear. The information about what you were looking at was strong. Would visit again definitely.

Always a pleasure to visit Bristol Museum. 2h appointment slots, hand cleaning stations and a one way system ensure safety. The cafe has excellent home made food and healthy vegan options. The staff are always friendly and helpful.

I visited this on 24 the July 2016. It's of world standard in terms of display and maintenance. Fossil of a deer extinct 10,000/ years ago is one of the valuable collections in this museum. Smaller when compared to London museum s. But those who visit Bristol must visit this museum. As an author from India, I enjoyed visiting museums and historical places in England.

A fun day walking around with heaps of interesting biological exhibits! My favourite were the dinosaurs. Staff at the visitor shop were warm and friendly.

The Bristol Museum is located on Queens Road. The museum is open every day except on Monday. Due to it's popularity, booking a time slot is necessary, but entry is free. The Bristol Museum consists of 3 floors. The ground floor is mainly filled with ancient and archeological exhibits. The cafe and gift shop is also located on this floor. The first floor is where you'll find the Dinosaur exhibit and the wildlife displays. A stuffed Alfred the Gorilla can be seen. The second floor is the Art Gallery.

Great collection of stuff but.... loads of kids running around and far too warm to visit, especially wearing a mask. Had to carry around jumper, coat, brolly. I'd visit on a T-shirt day when kids are at school and we don't have to wear masks....

Free entry but a donation of £5 is welcomed if people wish to support. There’s a nice cafe, a shop, a play area (parents must supervise)... Lots of taxidermy, it’s all very interesting. Then there’s a Romany wagon... you can see inside it.

(Translated by Google) It is nice to visit museums so I went to the Bristol (City) Museum and Art Gallery. It is located in a beautiful building and is free. Therefore, it was busy with visitors of all ages on a rainy Sunday. Not only is the museum's accommodation place, but its collection is also magnificent. It is very comprehensive and diverse. You will find dinosaurs and porcelain, ancient masters and minerals, modern art and Egyptian sarcophagi, endangered and even extinct animal species and Chinese glassware, Bristol maps and a plane, and much more. So there is a lot to see for everyone. There is a nice cafeteria and a museum shop and there are friendly volunteers who will be happy to help you if you get lost. Bristol can be proud of this city museum. I liked it. Onu sevdim.

Spent a lot of happy hours here as the children grew up. Lots of different areas to explore and before covid there were a fair amount of interactive areas. They were also very active in special events around school holidays etc. It is free to enter but please make sure to donate to keep this large amazing place going.

I love museums, and this one is small, and is worth a trip if you are near by, but the exhibits are a little tired. The Egyptians exhibition was really nice though. I would say that their covid measures were excellent on entry.

Really cool place, loads of cool art and stuff to find out. The art was particularly of interest, they have art ranging from renaissance era and maybe older to modern, from all around the world, including photography and at the moment the bristol photo exhibition is on, unfortunately I missed this but want to go back to see it. Would be a great day out for the family, lots of cool stuff for kids and adults to enjoy.

My partner and me are on holiday and visited Bristol for the day. We visited the museum and thought that there were a lot of chances to sanitise and remains safe. Unfortunately, the coffee machine was out of order in the cafe which was a shame. There was a lack of cooler air which made it quite unbearably hot for some of us on our way round but all in all it was well worth a free trip!

  • 5/5 Cabey M. 2 years ago on Google
Great, free afternoon for the dino-mad 5yo. Lovely wee cafe and play area too. Masks needed and sign in at the door for Covid. Will definitely be back!

Thanks to Bristol's wealthy past, the quality of the collection is higher than many provincial museums/art galleries. I especially enjoyed the Asian ceramics gallery.

  • 5/5 Beth K. 2 years ago on Google
Fantastic museum, a definite must-visit in Bristol. Much larger than expected with a good selection of exhibits ranging from natural history to ancient Egypt and paintings. Entry is free, but you do have to book online due to Covid. We did this the night before and there was plenty of availability, even though we were visiting on a Saturday in the summer holidays. The museum was not too busy, social distancing markers were in place and there was plenty of hand sanitiser available. Some of the interactive elements are unavailable, but for the most part these have been replaced with QR codes that allow you to access the information on your phone.

Absolutely lovely place to visit for a little trip. With free entry Bristol museum allows anyone to explore the current exhibits. The Egypt exhibition was really innovative as it presented moral questions along with the facts. Plenty of things to see and do, even has a little cafe inside.

  • 4/5 Joseph F. 2 years ago on Google
Very interesting Egyptian exhibit. The section on dinosaurs and the photography exhibit currently going on is underwhelming, being just random photos of influential people from the civil rights movement, but not necessarily interesting or creative in any way. The art gallery is much better, and worth skipping those sections for. Masks are required at the door, but not enforced throughout. Book a couple of days in advance, as it's very popular.

  • 4/5 Hayley T. 2 years ago on Google
Really lovely in how it's set up and one of the THE best ancient Egypt exhibitions I've seen! The interactive section wasnt available when i went, but understandable - however without it the benin bronze discussion and the images of Henry VIII were a bit lost. Would love to visit again. Would also love to see the shop reflect more of what was in the exhibits rather than other things. I love a good tie in and when your kid is engaged in something you want to keep that wheel turning. Spacious and clean. Would recommend a visit but it won't take more than a couple of hours. Seriously ...go see the Egypt bit!

A fascinating collection. Modern, Pre-Raphaelite and some interesting other art works along with a less spectacular collection of minerals and fossils. When we visited there was an exhibition of Japanese and Chinese art which included some of the best netsuke I have ever seen. Worth checking what exhibitions are on before you visit. Snack bar reasonable and good quality.

Very interesting and educational museum. Lots of different sections including animals, art and pottery. Fun kids play area and lots of interactive areas. My son was particularly interested in watching the video of how pots are made of clay and the tv area has a number of seats for you to sit and watch.

We were a little fatigued by the time we got to the museum so didn’t get the chance to have a proper look around. Some lovely paintings from well known artists such as Pissarro and Constable. My favourite was “Will He Come Back?” by Robert Morley - so well depicted. Definitely worth a visit.

  • 5/5 Hui-hua C. 11 months ago on Google
Very impressive! The museum is free and it offers a wide range of exhibitions in one place: Ancient Egypt, 15th century to contemporary art galleries, natural history and dinosaur fossils, earth minerals, and a beautiful embroidery piece that depicts major events in Bristol's history--it curiously reminded us of the Bayeux tapestry replica we saw in Reading. We enjoyed the visit very much and highly recommend it.

  • 4/5 Gianne L. 10 months ago on Google
Lovely paintings, displays, environment was clean. Could improve on some displays that don’t work where it should have been interactive. Overall it was a good elaening experience!

  • 5/5 Jabba da H. 9 months ago on Google
Nice place to be and spend time in, has got many nice and apealing paintings. For the most part the exhibition was not crowded, which made for good atmosphere within the building. The smaller exhibitions (right of the entrance in my case, something about egypt I believe) suffered because of little lighting and tight walkways, but do not have to be seen to be abled to enjoy the main exhibition.

  • 4/5 Andrea J. 8 months ago on Google
The museum has many exhibits ranging from fine art to natural history to pottery. Many of the exhibits are interactive and child friendly. It also has free entrance so easy to pop in, see a few things and then come back a different day. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

Bristol Museum and Art Gallery is a great place to visit whatever your age. It is free to enter The Eyptian and Asseryian galleries are fascinating. There are places for children to play and learn. The cafe is an interesting space and expands into the hall space at the end of the Museum. There is also a large shop. There is a lift into the building and a lift inside the Museum on the right handside of the Museum to all floors but it is a bit hidden away.

  • 5/5 Jack E. 7 months ago on Google
Magnificent and deserves to be better patronised. When I visited there was a skillfully curated exhibition of European paintings from a different perspective. The collection contains some unusual paintings by well known painters plus some paintings by much less well known painters but of special interest such as an unfinished picture by a lady named Gonsales who worked with Manet. This museum and gallery is at least as interesting as the one in Birmingham.

  • 5/5 Lada S. 7 months ago on Google
A very large and interesting museum with an art gallery. My main goal was to visit the hall with Ancient Egypt and exhibitions with porcelain from China and Japan. I ended up walking around the entire museum and spent a great two hours there. A £5 donation is nothing compared to what you can see in this museum. A must visit

  • 5/5 Drive H. 6 months ago on Google
It is a must visit place if you are visiting Bristol. It has quite a few good activities for kids as well. I was impressed by the section on people with disabilities and its influences on art. It is a free entry but you will be pleased to donate after the nice visit.

What I truly love about this museum like nothing else like that before was that the natural history part was very customized for bristol and surrounding Just love it. For educational perspective superb. Even imagine that somewhere there were mammoths or concrete sort of dinosaurs make the history so alive!
