A family oriented restaurant. Variety of options for the whole family. Great tasting food and understanding customer service in Brownwood Texas 🤠

This place is incredible. We opted to stop at this place instead of the chain restaurants around on our way home to Houston. This place DID NOT disappoint. The food and service is phenomenal. I must emphasize that the service is above and beyond. The apple cobbler is excellent and not overly sweet! The homemade whipped cream did not disappoint.

What's not to love about Underwood's. Family owned and operated, quick service, Buy your meat and get all you can eat sides and deserts! The food is exceptional, no matter what you order, lots of choices. If you don't already know about Underwood's (which would be kind of unbelievable) You would be remiss not to stop by!

I don’t know where to start, except to say if you’re coming through Brownwood, and you don’t stop at Underwoods, you’re making a mistake. This isn’t just the best food in Brown county, this place is clean, well staffed with kind welcoming people. Fresh rolls brought to your table, whip cream for your cobbler. There is no best meal because they are all the best! Nobody is rushing you. They want you to stay and enjoy your meal. This is old school, and if you think fast food is cheaper you’re dead wrong. Not only is this food healthy and delicious, but it is served right in front of you. Fresh green beans, sides for all the meals, which are simply outstanding. If you’re pulling a trailer, you can park in the lot just east of the restaurant—60’ away. If you’re driving a bus park in the same place. Ample parking for cars and trucks right in front of the restaurant. You can’t miss the place for the signs and the huge cowboy about 75 feet up in the air! Enjoy!

Staff was friendly and restaurant was really clean. Just your basic cafeteria style restaurant, you pick a meat but here you get as many of the side dishes as you’d like. Food was decent, I did like that they brought hot , fresh rolls to the table and offer to go boxes.

I’ve been eating at this central Texas Brownwood restaurant since I was a boy. Every time I walk thru those doors I’m transported to the old days, not much has changed. “What’s a beefsteak?” It’s the shoulder roast, and its fork tender and delicious. I opted for the German sausage. BBQ beans, buttery mash w/gravy, and sweet corn. AYCE on the sides and rolls. Yup peach cobbler, cherry and apple. Helpful and courteous staff will bring it to you with a smile! Don’t think, just stop! Except Wednesday. :(

Food is yummy!! Great service!! They keep your cups full and make sure you're happy. This is beef steak with BBQ sauce, mashed potatoes with gravy, fried okra, beans and peach cobbler. Fresh homemade rolls, so soft and delish! Truly great comfort food! Bathrooms were clean which was a nice plus. The whole place was well maintained and clean. Some would say the need to update but that's what's so special. It has this nostalgia that makes you comfortable. It's like eating dinner at my grandma's, on a Sunday, after church.

It’s good for what they advertise, hot rolls and cobbler but the real value was the staff. If it were just the food I wouldn’t have been super impressed but the waitstaff, the bussers, line folks were just as sunny and kind as Texas is big. We felt so welcomed and it was like going to Grandmas who always has your favorite homemade cookies and serves you a hearty but so-so meal. Go there for a warm hug if Texas hospitality, load up and try everything - it’s worth the trip.

A really good old timey cafeteria. You don't see too many of these so we had a chance to stop got plenty of food and slept with a full stomach. If you want to get your grub on come on down and hanker for some delicious vittles. Look no further for guud luck food.

Great place to stop for BBQ and all the sides you can handle. Spent many summers in Brownwood and never missed a chance to eat at Underwoods. You know what your going to get, great food and wonderful service. I was partial to the Beef but you can not go wrong with anything on the menu. And then row after row of sides from mash potatoes to greenbeans and cobbler. Also, don't forget the rolls! If your hungry stop in and leave full and happy.

After hearing about this place for years anytime the city of Brownwood was brought up, we finally were able to check it out on our way through town...and it was totally worth it! First off, the barbeque is some of the best around. Second, the sides are included with the price of your meat. Choose wisely though and don't take more than you need, as greed is a sin. Thirdly, the staff will offer you up some whipped cream for your cobbler. Truly, icing on the cake. Come check this place out if you haven't already!

If you're looking for some good old-fashioned cooking in a family-friendly atmosphere, Underwood's Cafeteria is the place for you. The BBQ is especially delicious, and the portions are generous. The staff is friendly and helpful, and they'll be sure to hook you up with some whipped cream on your cobbler if you just ask. Plus, the hot rolls are unlimited and absolutely delicious. Prices are surprisingly reasonable, making Underwood's a great option for everyone!

So, thought we would check this place out.It was on Dinner, drive in & dives with Guy. But I would AVOID wasting your money. Ordered the ribs, rib steak. Totally 🤢.corn, green beans etc. All canned and not tasty. They have 1 thing going on. There rolls. BBQ sauce was nothing special. Disappointed to say the least

Omg...thank goodness I don't live near here. I would eat here every day. I had the steak sandwich and my husband had chicken fried steak. It was DELICIOUS. The steak is butter like fork tender. All of this food was just a little over 20 bucks. I couldn't believe it. They let you have all of the sides you want AND you can take your food home with you in yo go boxes. (I cant eat much at a time..but i eat often...lol)

First time diner at Underwood's, and it certainly won't be the last! My roasted chicken was moist and very flavorful. Delicious!! The beverage refill and bread carts are a nice touch. Service personnel were all very friendly and efficient.

Underwood’s has been a “Goin’ Band From Raiderland” favorite for well over 40 years and it NEVER disappoints! The food is delicious, the staff is top notch and friendly and the atmosphere is warm and inviting! (And their peach cobbler CANNOT be beat!)

Let me just start off by saying WOW WOW WOW!!!!! What a great place I found in Brownwood Texas. And I wouldn't have found it if I had not missed my turn or earlier in the day to come home. Once I missed my turn I knew there was other ways to get back to San Antonio and going through Brownwood was one of them. I was starving and there was a big advertisement sign out on the highway about Underwood's. Figured I'd give it a try. Best decision I've ever made. Cafeteria style dining. All the staff that I ran into were all very very nice. The young lady at the beginning explained how everything worked. The server gives you your meat choice and then the best thing I've ever heard she said "everything from the green beans down is self-serve and it's unlimited desert and unlimited rolls."I decided to have the 3-piece chicken with mashed potatoes, gravy and rolls with a sweet tea. The other neat thing was the little lady walking around the dining-room pushing the cart asking if you wanted a refill on drinks or on your deserts. This brought me back to the early sixties and the Wyatt's cafeteria I used to go to with my family that did the very same thing. This was a small town, relaxed, friendly environment to just sit back in this small town in a cafeteria Restaurant and enjoy some fantastic food. I have traveled all across the Southwest, Colorado, South Dakota Missouri Kansas Oklahoma and more. This is the first time I've ever given somebody 5 stars and they absolutely deserved it. Anytime I travel now if Brownwood is a possibility I will get off the highway and drive the extra hour or so just to swing over there and eat. If you're in Central Texas and you're going to be near Brownwood pull into Underwood's and have some great food.

German sausage was super! I had the potato salad and a roll. The peach cobbler with whipped cream was delicious! They roll carts around with the whipped cream, and the server dips it right at the table.

I love this place! It's the one stop that has something for everyone. It's cafeteria style, so bring an appetite and leave happy. The ribs fall off the bone, and the chicken is always a big hit. Their cobbler is to die for, and hot rolls are always fresh. I've eaten hear many times and never had a bad experience.

It's been over 10 years since we've been here! I couldn't believe the place hadn't changed at all! When something works this well, why mess with it, right? Still handing out fresh hot rolls and whipped cream for your cobbler. The food was good and the service great!

Underwood's is still our family's favorite BBQ place of all time. There is nothing that isn't excellent here. The BBQ beef steak has no rival in my opinion. But the other entrees are also excellent as are the many sides like corn, green beans, potato salad, etc. that are all included in your meal. Plus dessert and rolls are also included. The rolls just melt in your mouth and the cobbler (cherry, peach, or apple) cannot be beat!

Entrees are excellent!! I had the Chicken Fried Steak and tried the Beefsteak—both were amazing. The rolls are awesome as well! Also, the cobbler + homemade whipped cream 🤤🤤🤤 Unfortunately...the sides were okay...the beans were genuinely flavorless and watery and the corn needed salt, although the addition of gravy helped. Potatoes were good, and the potato salad amazing! All in all, it SHOULD be a 5/5, but they need to step it up on the sides. 76 years of experience should produce good beans, not culinary mediocrity permitted by a lack of local competition. Had a generally positive experience because the cobbler was amazing enough to make up for the okay sides, but I was underwhelmed.

If you like cafeteria style food you're going to love this place. It's everything you'd expect from that kind of environment. The chicken fried steak doesn't appear to be homemade but it still tasted good. It's almost like a buffet except you pay different prices for the meat. The jalapeno sausage was very spicy. But the service is nice and we enjoyed the trip.

It's a cafeteria style. The food was great. Had the mixed plate with all the sides. The cherry cobbler was amazing. The service is exceptional.
