An incredible experience! We took the guided, highlights tour with Erick and we are so happy we did (as opposed to self guided). All the staff were friendly and enthusiastic, but our guide was exceptional. He was knowledgeable and excited to answer the group’s questions. The house has such an interesting history and some honestly jaw-dropping pieces inside. Tour is about an hour. Discounts available to students.

Well preserved history at its finest! This 3 story mansion-turned-museum features unique architecture, artwork and furnishings that have been expertly maintained. Given the staff are so passionate and knowledgeable, I recommend the guided tour if your schedule allows. General admission tickets can be purchased in advance, although not mandatory, for $20. The website lists guided tour times, which are first come, first serve with limited capacity and $5 extra upon arrival. Expect to spend a solid hour here.

A very beautiful example from the guild era. The home was originally completed in 1883. It was refurbished and is right downtown. We spent one hour viewing this magnificent home. You wouldn't be disappointed. Even the public bathroom inside the home is true to the period.

Beautiful first floor! The dome is amazing. I’ve been here multiple times and the staff are always friendly and knowledgeable. Literally 2 blocks or less from the Starbucks reserve. Pretty decent gift shop!

This place is a gem and a must see museum in Chicago. It explores themes in the architecture of Louis Sullivan and the photography by Richard Nickel that documented the destruction of many of Adler & Sullivan’s most important Chicago buildings. There are many art collections of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Absolutely beautiful!!!

Very beautiful, restored historic house that was worth the visit. They have a free self-serve coat check and a $5 guided group tour that lasts an hour. They have several tours a day. (Credit card friendly.) Very friendly and knowledgeable staff as well. They had lots of information about the art pieces there and the history of the previous owners. Lots of Tiffany items. The upstairs rooms are mostly empty of historic furniture but used as an art gallery.

A small museum showcasing an exquisite home from the 1800s. The building has earned the name marbel palace with exquisite walls and staircase. The ground floor is spectacular filled with original furniture and well worth seeing. Unfortunately the second and third floor living quarters are missing their furnishings and are empty rooms. Worth seeing but hard to justify the $20 entry

This was on my daughter's trip to do and I wasn't sure if I would enjoy it as much but the beauty of the craftsmanship drew me in. The Tiffany glassworks, the intricate wood and stone carving, tile work, and the carpentry were so inspiring. We didn't take a tour, which might have been helpful, but I was looking for more details on the artisans who made the beauty than the people who purchased them. We took our time and were pretty slow, but this museum only took 2 hours. Even without the elevator, the stairs were not too much, though it is 3 stories of very tall rooms. The entrance fee is credit only. Nice gift shop.

A great stop during a weekend in Chicago. The museum is filled with architectural and design gems including a Tiffany glass ceiling, marble staircase, and floor to ceiling tiled wall treatments. Every nook and cranny is a step back in time and offers something interesting from a design perspective. The guides were very knowledgeable about the history of the home. Nothing can be touched so it's not the kind of place I would take my kids to see but I really enjoyed seeing it with a couple of friends who appreciated the historical and artistic experience.

To truly enhance your museum visit, I recommend opting for the guided tour, which is a mere $5 addition to your ticket. It's important to plan accordingly, though, as the guided tours run at specific times and last for about an hour. If you prefer to explore independently, a self-guided visit can range from 20 to 40 minutes. While the museum is undoubtedly captivating, I must admit that I found the overall cost slightly on the high side for what it offered. It's a destination I'd primarily recommend to those with a keen interest in exploring the French influence on Chicago's architecture. However, I would advise against bringing children under 12 years old, as there's a substantial amount of reading involved in the exhibits.

Top 5 places in Chicago to see! Incredible history and restoration work. Very unique pieces of art and sculpture! From the floors to the ceilings this building was made with the highest level of care and craftsmanship. The domed stained glass ceiling is a mind blowing feat of skill and every single room has an aspect that will make you gawk at the amount of wealth the original owners must have had at the turn of the 20th century!

fantastic gilded age mansion - recommend guided tour. Now featuring a Louis Sullivan/Richard Nickel exhibit. Park at the Row garage two blocks south, you get a $15 parking credit from the museum if you bring the parking garage ticket to show them

This ornate gem is so worth a visit, especially if you like art nouveau style. The first floor interiors are the most beautiful, so start in the third floor and finish with the gorgeous salons and dining room on the ground floor.

GILDED AGE GLORY Be sure you stop by this storied Chicago landmark. Easy access via the Chicago stop of the CTA Red line. Try to take a tour to supplement the self guided information on their app. Check their website for the regular updates on their remarkable exhibits! If you're a Walker Art Center friend level member, you'll get reciprocal entry.

I was blown away at the beauty of this museum / mansion. The mansion was built in 1879 and displays the beautiful fireplaces, beautiful woodwork, you'll learn about the lifestyle of the family that lived there - where they ate, their dinner menu, where they hosted guests. There really is a lot to see. I'm afraid I'm not doing it justice, so I say go and see it for yourself. Experience it with your eyes. I think you'll love it, just as I did.

I have made somewhat of a hobby of touring gilded age mansions. This one is among the finest I have seen. Elaborate marble and hardwood interiors which vary in theme from room to room. The owner has displayed his collection of Tiffany lighting as well as other period appropriate decor throughout the mansion which really sets the vibe in the best way. It underwent meticulous restoration under twenty years ago so this is a rare chance to see a mansion of this period as it may have looked when it was new. It would be my pleasure to visit again.

Interesting, nice building, good history lesson, but not a whole lot of there there. Beautiful rooms but the history of the place isn't that compelling other than being a well preserved post fire mansion with unspectacular tenants. Period bathrooms were a nice touch. A bit pricey for a relatively small mansion being written off as a tax deduction by a hedge fund.

Little known Chicago attraction, but definitely worth it. It is really neat to see what high class Chicago looked like back in the Glided Age. Great that there are two houses preserved right in Downtown. The marble was amazing, great artwork, stained glass, tiffany lamps and more. Not sure about the Muslim fireplace though.

Absolutely beautiful home. There is a lot of love and care that has gone into its restoration. The guide was very knowledgeable and answered all questions.

Not as grand as the Newport mansions but worth an hour or so.

I would NOT recommend paying for an annual membership for this museum. If a particular exhibit interests you, by all means, feel free to go. However, the museum offers very little to members in the way of openings and benefits. The space allotted to members for the events is very limited and reservations for such events are not easy to obtain and the site is not very instructive about the process in which to obtain such slots. There are plenty of other museums in Chicago that do a much better job connecting with their members and making them feel valued. Do not waste your money on an annual membership.

Stunning mansion and Museum. A step back in time. A must see by yourself. You have the choice of exploring alone or with a guide.

Great experience. I would recommend adding the tour guide package to your ticket purchase, for an extra $10. It adds dimension to the museum.

Probably the most beautiful place in downtown Chicago. The thick walls and beautiful old interior just sooths. You can take a break from the daily rut. Also the shop upstairs has wonderful products.

This is an incredible place. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. The house itself is a work of art. Almost every square foot of the building is a call back to a time of complete craftsmanship.

A gem in the middle of cement jungle! A big mansion with amazing decos.

  • 5/5 Dan G. 2 years ago on Google
Great place to visit to see the opulence of a bygone era. I would expect these days that there might be a little attention paid to the working class servants, but there was almost none. Servant quarters were off limits to visitation and only one tiny afterthought stand with postcard-sized pictures of the staff quarters were on display. Mansions like this housed the privileged 1 percent who were privileged on the backs of working people, so the 99 percent deserve some due.
