When Dhaka became the provincial capital in 1906 AD, it was built along with the former High Court building, Curzon Hall etc. It was a two-storied building then. This building was built to be used as a temporary residence or bungalow for the administrative high-ranking officials. The name of this building is not known till 1919 AD. Maharaja Vijay Chand Mahtab (1887-1941 AD) of Burdwan was a member of the Governing Council of the Governor of undivided Bengal till 1919 AD and he held this post till 1924 AD. During this period, as a member of the Governor's ruling council, he had to come to the then provincial capital Dhaka once a year. He was living in this house as a royal guest at that time. Over time this building came to be known as Burdwan House. This building is currently known as Bangla Academy Building. Every year Amar Ekushey Granth Mela is held in this premises

The main office of Bangla Academy is located here. This whitewashed Victorian building was originally used as a bungalow for government dignitaries and royal guests until 1947. In 1958 the whole building came under the possession of Bangla Academy. Three floors of this building were built in 1962 in keeping with the original design. The 'Bhasha Andolan Jadughar' (Language Movement Museum) is located on the first floor of the house. Since 1978, every year under the supervision of Bangla Academy, a book fair has been organized around this building for the month of February.

Bangla Academy was established on December 3, 1955. This academy was established in the then East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) with the aim of practicing, researching and promoting Bengali language and literature. In the context of the post-national language movement, the demand for the establishment of Bangla Academy arose. The headquarters of this academy was established in 'Burdwan House', the official residence of the then Prime Minister of East Pakistan. There is a 'Language Movement Museum' in Burdwan House of the Academy.
