The
"Saint
John
the
Baptist"
church
is
a
foundation
of
the
boyar
family
Ioan
and
Ioana
Grecescu,
who
also
built
the
nearby
hospital.
The
work
was
started
on
May
10,
1868
and,
upon
completion
of
the
project,
King
Carol
I
hired
the
architect
of
the
Capital,
and
the
church
was
to
be
built
according
to
the
style
of
the
princely
one
at
Curtea
de
Argeș.
The
value
and
beauty
of
this
religious
place
are
also
given
by
the
interior
painting,
in
neoclassical
style,
created
by
Gheorghe
Tătărescu
(1872).
The
work
was
done
at
the
expense
of
Gheorghe
Poenaru
(1000
Austrian
imperial
yellows),
when
the
founders
were
no
longer
alive.
The
church
was
consecrated
in
1875,
and
in
1884
it
became
the
Orthodox
cathedral
of
the
city
of
Turnu
Severin
(the
old
cathedral,
the
Maioreasa
church,
being
in
ruins).
With
zeal
and
skill
two
drawing
teachers
from
Turnu
Severin
worked
on
this
work
of
religious
art,
washing
the
painting
(in
1898
Alexandru
Răsmeriță
and
in
1908
Theodor
Zarnea).
The
roof
of
the
church
was
originally
made
of
copper
sheet
but
was
confiscated
by
the
German
army
in
1917.
The
present
one
dates
from
1920.
