I can talk for hours about the magnificence of this place. It’s huge! Filled with statues of all famous and non-famous, real and fictional characters. Gods and goddesses, warriors, heroes, remnants of the old ages, archeological excavations, bones, jewelry, a gift shop …etc .. You just have to see it to appreciate it. Outside of the place there is a large expanse of green gardens that you can walk about in. A cafe that serves hot and cold beverages and ice cream! You need a ticket to get in, and if you need an audio guide then prepare your passport before you go.

Very cool museum with many ancient artifacts. I only wish that there was more to see and more detailed exhibits. Many placards had only limited information. Also, they keep the lights very dim throughout the museum, I assume to preserve the nature of many of the artifacts, but it would have been nice to be able to see things in a better light. Still it’s worth a trip if you’re into ancient history.

Definitely a must go to when in Istanbul!!! Three museums in one location! I personally was the biggest fan of their cuneiform tablets! They are incredible! Plus the Sumerian statues! Plus Alexander the great has his sarcophagus there! Also there was a splendid cafe outside where you could get coffee, cold beverages, and snacks. There were sweet little kittens roaming around the property as well, outside. We spent about $11.00 per person. There was a little wait and we went through some metal detectors. Masks are required! Also you must bring your vaccination card or a photo of it. Oh and bring comfortable walking shoes.

Certainly one of the most extraordinary museums of the ancient world. The sarcophagus of Alexander is another masterpiece discovered is a must see. The golden grounds are a perfect example of master craftsmanship and are amongst the best examples in the world.

This museum is a true gem! The complex of buildings itself is magnificent, the finest blend of neoclassical and ottoman architecture, with a big garden containing more findings and unclassified antiquities before your eyes! The interior covers wonderfully the history of Istanbul and Anatolia from the Bronze Age, the Greek city-states, the Hellenistic period, the Roman and Byzantine Middle Ages, and the times after the Ottoman conquest. There are wonderful explanatory exhibitions, video projections, paintings and even models of the ground levels of antiquity findings and the historical periods they belong to! And what can I say about the exhibited findings themselves? A stunning collection of priceless masterpieces from every corner of the Mediterranean, Greek and Roman statues, whole pieces of ancient cities, sarcophagi from Egypt, Ottoman pottery, beautiful tiles and so much more! I’m truly amazed! When you get tired of walking and admiring, there’s the cute museum cafe in the garden, so you can relax before you keep going with the rest of the museum’s spaces. Congratulations to Istanbul for this museum, I ‘ll be back for sure, a few hours are not enough!

Great museum. Lots of exhibits, one more interesting than the other and a perfect organization. Definitely worth a visit, preferably with a personal guide, but in any case, without haste. It takes about two hours to see and admire all its artifacts, starting with the wonderful sarcophagi and continuing with the splendid Roman and Greek statues, the pottery of ancient Greece, the jewelry of Asia Minor and the coins of Byzantium. Super !

It's quite an impressive museum, much better than anticipated. There is a couple of amazing things there, and the museum itself feels new and freshly renovated. Everything is in English, but the line to buy tickets will take up at least 30 minutes of your time.

Perhaps the best part of my Turkey visit. Expansive, educational and elaborate collection of artifacts displayed tastefully and with great detail of information. The Museum has several sections so one can easily spend an entire day here. The Sarcophagus displays, statue displays and the section about Troy are fascinating. Worth getting the audio tour for extra information as its missing on many pieces. There's a nice cafe outside to relax after the tour. The ticket queue was unnaturally slow and could have been a lot better

Good selection but unfortunately many sections were closed for public while we were there. The statues, Ancient Greek artifacts and sarcophagus were breathtaking. You almost felt you were back in time while looking at those well preserved artifacts in display! There was also a section dedicated to archaeological knowledge which I found quite interesting. Definitely worth a visit. We spent a couple of hours in the main section along but you could easily spend more time!

A must see for people who love ancient civilizations. Three museums in the same place. The first one takes you back to ancient Mesopotamia, Levant and Anatolia. The second one collects the ancient Greek and Roman objects and also has a detailed explanation of their culture. The last but not the least one is about the ceramics and porcelain of the Ottoman era.

(Translated by Google) It was recently renovated and opened for years. I think it is one of the most important archeology museums in the world, the biggest and most important part of the Istanbul archeology museums with 3 parts. It is an amazing museum that hosts excellent works from the sarcophagus of Alexander the Great and the Crying women to the mummies and the treasured parts of the ancient city of Sidon. Very spacious museum with vast number of collections. Be ready to walk a lot. Many tombs, monuments, jewelry and coin exhibits. Egyptian mummies, research area, even the way to the toilet is full of historical pieces. Museum card let you pass without waiting in a line. It’s in the heart of historical center , close to the beautiful park with storks.

There are aspects of this museum that are really great. They have a HUGE collection of statues (mostly Greek) and sarcophagi. Probably the biggest collection you’ve seen. Plus a mummy and some skeletons. Also a whole section dedicated to Troy. It’s laid out well and looks lovely. The Tiled museum was cool but small. What really annoyed me was the audio guide. It cost twice the price of the entrance ticket but was completely useless. There were only a handful of entries and they tell you basically nothing. Don’t bother paying for the guide. Otherwise, come primarily for the many large and interesting sarcophagi.

Good part of town as it is surrounded by many things to do around it, the Museum was 350TL per person which I believe is worth the price as it is huge and there are many things to see, unfortunately when we went parts were under renovation so we could not see it all but you will still be surely satisfied with what is there now. Best to go early in the morning to skip the ques and to immerse yourself fully without feeling too crowded inside!

Great place to visit on a rainy day. Pretty cheap, we paid 340 TL per person. It took us about 1:30-2:00 hours at max to see everything. Gift shop is a no-ho, everything very overpriced. Coins are 600TL for 6 coins, but you can buy those exact for 5TL/coin (December 2023). I would imagine same is for the rest of those gifts. Otherwise, really great place to visit.

Incredibly vast museum highlighting the art and way of living of civilizations before us. I love the personal finds like the oldest love poem, as well as how they mapped out how a particular area lived over centuries according where in the layers of soil the items were excavated. The vast crypts and its mausoleum were interesting too. The only downside would be the cats were greedy and not friendly at all 🥲

One of my favorite museums during stay in Istanbul. Collection of it is astonishing. I don't know why it is not on top list of must visit places of Istanbul, but it is great. Also, because it is not among top attractions in Istanbul it's not overcrowded and you can calmly walk among this gemstones and enjoy.

Admission is free with the Museum Pass. It is recommended not to listen to the Korean audio guide. Not beneficial. It is one of the top 5 museums in the world. It is famous for having the sarcophagus of Alexander the Great. There are really many things to see, including relics of the Roman Empire, Byzantine Empire, and Ottoman Empire.

You can see the remains of ancient Rome and many sculptures about the Greek mythology but unfortunately the heads of the sculptures aren't available in most of them. At the end, there's one souvenir shop where you can buy mini decorative sculptures as well. By the way, I strongly suggest you to spend some time in the garden to see tha amazing stray cats of Istanbul. I attached the photos of cute kitten I petted there 🐈

A wonderful place to visit full of history. A well designed and maintained museum. The displays are very special with enough information to enlighten the visitors. My favourite was the sarcophagus of Alexander the Great. However, for me it was too much to take in so I have planned for a revisit.

Some rooms are closed due to reconstruction. Egyptian–Hittite peace treaty and glazed brick from Ishtar gate (which is in Berlin) are within those rooms. Available highlights are Alexander's and Lycian sarcophagus. Because of the reconstruction a 1 hour or max 1,5h is enough.

Incredible building in great shape. The collection inside is well thought out and has some interactive elements, which made it even more fun. The ticket is not too expensive considering other attractions. It’s 350 lira or ~11€. Everyone was nice, and the museum has great bits of history inside. I don’t give 5 stars only because you get an audioguide with your ticket, and they were “sold out”, even though we only saw a handful of people inside with them. The museum shop doesn’t have a great selection, but the cafe outside is not too expensive and super pleasant to sit down and have a drink.

Visiting the Istanbul Archaeology Museum was an unforgettable journey into history, made even more special by sharing it with my childhood friends. The museum, nestled in the heart of Istanbul, is not just a building but a portal to the past. From the moment we stepped inside, we were captivated by the stunning collection of artifacts that spanned civilizations and epochs. The exhibits are thoughtfully curated, each piece telling a story of ancient cultures and long-forgotten eras. The museum's vast collection, ranging from mesmerizing Mesopotamian relics to the intricate Alexander Sarcophagus, was both enlightening and awe-inspiring. It felt as though each artifact had a voice, whispering secrets of the past. The layout of the museum facilitated a seamless journey through history, guiding us from one civilization to another. The attention to detail in the preservation and presentation of these historical treasures was evident and deeply appreciated. Each room brought new discoveries and a deeper understanding of the rich tapestry of human history. What made the visit truly special was experiencing it with my childhood friends. Sharing the awe and wonder, reminiscing about our school days, and making new memories amidst these ancient relics added a layer of personal significance to the visit. The museum not only provided us with a glimpse into the past but also a space to reconnect with each other in the present. The Istanbul Archaeology Museum is more than just a collection of artifacts; it's a celebration of human history, creativity, and resilience. It's a must-visit for anyone who finds themselves in Istanbul, whether a history buff or just looking for a profound experience. This visit will remain etched in my memory as a day when time stood still, and we were in the company of both history and friendship.

The Istanbul Archeology Museum not only displays the artefacts and history discovered in Turkey in an abstract and delightful way, but also covers the history of the world and ancient empires. From the sarcophagus of the Egyptian pharaoh to the statue of the Greek gods and a part of the findings of the civilizations of Iran's geography, etc., it was a unique experience for me to walk in this museum, every part of which was spectacular and attractive to me. The descriptions below the works were very short and sometimes incomplete. New technologies and multimedia were used in better showing and deeper experience of history and antiquities, but there was still a long distance with the correct and balanced use of these technologies. If you want to experience this museum comfortably, you will need about 2 hours. The atmosphere of the museum was very suitable and the large corridors made it easy to explore the entire museum.

Amazing selection of antiquities and historical artifacts from different time periods and their empires. Unfortunately some parts have limited information regarding that particular artifact which is a shame. The museum isn't very big but you wouldn't think that from outside. For the archaeological museum, while the part we were able to see was perfectly preserved and displayed in a beautiful way we only got to see the greek/roman section as all the other floors are currently closed for rennovation. However in comparison the ancient orient museum looks like it needs some care, hopefully this is the next step of the renovation? Main complain about these 2 is that there were human remains on display which should be unacceptable. No complains about the tiled kiosk, simple but beautiful!

A real disappointment to see all the stolen relics of the surrounding countries in one building. but very interesting design, and very little infos when you choose the audio guide. the quality of the headphones are also sub-zero as they are used by many people. It was alright, when we went in there was a long line-up but it moved fairly quickly. There was alot of interesting things to see inside...so I'd highly recommend it. Note to the museum, I think it's a bit sad that you have the sarcophagus of the priest who clearly didn't want anyone to open it on display...at least honor his wishes and let him rest in peace.

Wow! This museum was stunning. We only spent an hour because we went close to closing time but it was definitely worth it. When you enter you put your bags through an X-ray machine and walk through a security screening. You enter into a stunning garden area and to the right is the museum. The artifacts are amazing and you can get very close to them. All of the descriptions are in both Turkish and English which is very helpful. The museum actually closed at 8pm when we were there instead of the 7pm that google showed. This museum is also part of the museum pass you can get. I definitely recommend this pass if you intend to see multiple museums as it will save you money. It’s is 360 Turkish lira (about $30usd) and valid for 5 days.

One of the best museums that I have visited. All descriptions are posted in both Turkish and English. An amazing collection of statues and stone carvings from as far back as 6000 - 5000 BCE. Too numerous to count statues from the Roman times. An amazing garden just full of ancient history surrounding you as you take a break and eat lunch. An entire floor dedicated to the history of Troy. Not to mention the numerous display of sarcophagus. The free audio guide is helpful but my recommendation would be to use Rick Steves' walking tour of this museum. Highly recommended.

December 2023- The open areas in the main building are recently beautifully renovated. All their items from south and east of Anatolia are in areas still being renovated and are closed. This includes the panel from Hezekiah’s tunnel and the Samaria Ostraca. I asked when it may be opened. They say no schedule has been announced. Rumor is they want to be open in three years.

Nice museum with an active team working on a lot of restoration projects and other discoveries. Tile museum was just as cool as the sarcophagus (alexander the greats being the one to see) one. Nice designs from many centuries ago.

It's probably the best place I've visited in Istanbul. It's the less crowded and there's a lot of different historical things that you can see there, it depends on you. If you like seeing statues and taking pictures you'd probably need more than hour and a half there if no you can do it in 30 mins.

Deplorable. As a native of the city, I took a friend from abroad to visit the museum. We're both familiar with the Ancient Greek and Roman history of the city and were anxious to see many classic archeological artifacts such as the head of the Serpentine Column, the Alexander Sarcophagus and a remaining pillar of the Sacred Palace. The pillar was barricaded off because of a reconstruction nearby, the Sarcophagus was "in renovation" and the museum officials didn't even know where the head of the Serpentine Column was. Yet the Islamic section of the museum (there are three sections in total) was conveniently undisturbed. I see they've wasted no time in making sure religious items that have nothing to do with the city's history have been preserved in pristine condition because of high muslim tourist frequency. Whereas equally significant and more relevant objects have been neglected. How far my city has sunken. Deplorable.

An outrageous abundance of spectacularly decorated and well-preserved stone carved sarcophaguses / (sarcophagi?) from throughout the first millennium BC. Many of the sarcophagi still have remnants of paint on them. The exhibit includes information about how the artifacts were discovered and transported, as well as maps and murals depicting scenes from the discovery, handling, and transport to Istanbul. The exhibit really made me feel like a part of the discovery team.

Turkey territory is a cradle of many ancient civilisations so you might admire a lot of interesting artefacts in the museum.

  • 4/5 Martin V. 4 years ago on Google
The exhibition is great, even though a bit small. Half of the museum was being renovated. The open parts were focused mostly on ancient and classic eras and there were plenty of artifacts you won't see anywhere else. I didn't appreciate security guards playing loud videos on their phones and the fact there was nobody knowledgeable about the artefacts to ask questions.

Aya İrini Kilisesi’nde o güne değin toplanmış arkeolojik eserlerden oluşan Müze-I Humayun, İstanbul Arkeoloji Müzeleri’nin temelini oluşturur. Aya İrini’nin yetersiz kalması ile Fatih Sultan Mehmet döneminde yaptırılmış olan ‘Çinili Köşk’ müzeye dönüştürülmüştür. Halen İstanbul Arkeoloji Müzeleri’ne bağlı olan Çinili Köşk restore edilerek 1880 yılında ziyarete açılır. İstanbul Arkeoloji Müzeleri Müdürlüğü binalarındaki alt katta yer alan, 1, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 numaralı salonlar ve üst kattaki salonların tamamının; Ek Bina zemin katta ''Assos Sergi Salonu'' ve ''İstanbul'un Çevre Kültürleri: Trakya, Bithynia - Bizans'' sergi salonları ziyarete kapalı.

I strongly recommend that you should visit the museum, read all descriptions and look deeply at exhibited artifacts.

If you kind of that do not like museums, this one worth visiting anyway. It has many sarcophagus open with bones inside, you can walk around it pretty close. Some of archaeological artefacts looks really impressive, telling the history of their owners, nations. It is 4 buildings in total, all different artefacts and impressions, it takes some time to walk though all of them so grab some water to take a short rest in meantime.

Amazing history and presentation of history. The only reason this museum does not get a 5 star rating is the bathroom. So much effort into all areas of this establishment and its overshadowed by a poor restroom. The exhibits are presented beautifully, but now I understand other ratings regarding the lack of descriptions on each piece. Oddly enough, the structures outside have a larger explanation than that inside. Overall, would totally recommend and give yourself plenty of time. The detail of the excavations are fascinating!

Most of the exhibition halls are closed. When we were there, we had access only at the main hall. The audio guide is great and not too long per audio. One of the 3 snake heads from the iron basilisk is there on display. The Troy Hall and its layered excavation model are very informative and creative. The museum shop is very cool and you can get jewellery designed with ancient motives and styles. Unfortunately the bathroom is really in need of a cleaning..

The Istanbul Archaeology Museum offers a unique experience for history enthusiasts, and if you have a Muzi Kart, it's an affordable visit. However, for foreign visitors, the ticket price can be quite steep, especially if you've already explored attractions like the Basilica Cistern and Topkapi Palace. During my visit, the museum was surprisingly uncrowded, almost empty, which was a nice change from the bustling tourist spots. If you have a passion for sculpture, pottery, and ceramics, this is your paradise. But if these subjects don't pique your interest, you might not find this museum worth the expense. It's a specialized attraction that caters well to those with a particular fascination for its offerings. For istanbul itinerary follow me on Instagram @itsaroojmazhar

340 Turkish Lira for foreign visitors. Magnificent museum with lots of exhibits and artefacts. There's a real mummy in the museum, several coffins. Must visit if you are into history and museum. Toilet was a bit dirty, though.

It is one of the best places to visit in Istanbul, no matter if you are a history lover or not. The museum will guide you through the ages: from the great Trojan war, the rise and fall of empires that ruled the region, up until the 19th century administration by Osman Hamdy Bey. As of January 2024, some exhibition spaces like "istanbul through ages" and "Syria, Palestine & Cyprus" were closed due to restoration/maintenance, but it was understandable judging by the size of the building complex. Definitely will return to visit the rest of them!
