Great and really beautiful temple. All entrance is free. You only need to pay for parking and if you want to use the cable cars. But everything is also walkable and there is a bus station close. The view to the city is also worth the little hike. The big statue is really big and tall. Which makes it hard to see it fully close as the platform is to small in ratio to the height of the statue. To see all plan around 2 hours. Down besides the first car park is a turtle pond.

Malaysia's largest Buddhist temple sits on a hill, at the bottom of Air Itam mountain. As Asian temples go, Kek Lok Si is relatively new, as construction began in 1890-but the massive seven-story Pagoda surrounded by 10,000 Buddha statues make this a striking destination that can't be missed. Surrounded by gardens, fish ponds, prayer halls, and a number of stalls selling both religious and secular souvenirs, the pagoda is also home to a 36-meter-tall statue of Kwan Yin, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. The temple attracts many visitors from all around Southeast Asia who come here to "make merits" but also to see one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the area. Chinese New Year celebrations are particularly beautiful at the temple, as the entire space is decorated with thousands of lanterns.

Kek Lok Si is a nice and impressive temple that is definitely worth a visit. The temple consists of several layers and is very easy to reach with small elevators (paid). There are men who drive back and forth with electric vans. In the high season I wonder if it is worth visiting the temple, we were there outside the main season and it was already a long wait for the elevators. Once at the top you have a beautiful view of the city and there are ponds with dozens (perhaps hundreds) of turtles to see.

Beautiful temple worth visiting and looking around. There are multiple levels and you can hike up I think or your can pay at each stage for a round trip ticket. You pay at each station. You can't buy everything in advance. I suggest going to the top as fast as possible then working your way down. There's a lot to see and a lot of extra stuff to do for blessings and merit driven offerings. Just go. It's beautiful.

One of the largest and yet well maintained Buddhist temples in Malaysia. The temple complex has several prayer halls alongside gardens, and of course the famous statue of Guanyin. While the temple has excellent facilities to ferry visitors from one site to another, it is recommended to walk around and explore instead. The temple has a rich history that must be experienced first hand.

Large structure of temples on the mountains. Great views from the top. Beautiful pagodas, Buddha halls. The entrance to the tram service is not very clean, and it is confusing if the service is available. They should have clear signs. One you go up to station 2, to go up further, have to pay at each step, super annoying.

Impressive temple with amazing views, a pity that it is still mostly under construction. The Pagoda is a must, from the top you'll have some very nice views. Easy to park at the top, costs 3RM. Accessing the Pagoda is 2RM and the funicular to the higher statue costs 6RM.

A beautiful Buddhist temple complex with a great view of Penang. It’s worth a visit. Free of charge, however you have to pay to get to the top if you want to get there with an elevator. Still affordable, though. It wasn’t crowded when we were there. Perfect time to visit.

Kek Lok Si temple is an iconic destination in Penang island. This beautiful Buddhist temple is located in Ayer Itam and is popular with both locals and tourists. Visitors can either take mini cable car to the main prayer hall or make a short height up top. There is no strict dress code enforcement but advisable to wear appropriately.

Easier access and with plenty of photo opportunities! Energetic visitors can climb stairways to top of the pagoda for beautiful views of the temple complex and also Georgetown. Good selection of shops for local delicacies and also tourist souvenirs.

During the CNY 2021 to Goddess of Mercy & Kek Lok Si Temple is always pack with people and vehicles. The access road is very narrow. The traffic is crawling and bumper to bumper. Advisable to park at the foot of the Kek Lok Si Temple and take a stroll up to the Goddess of Mercy & Kek Lok Si Temple. Night is very spectacular with Led lights. The lights will be switched off after 10.00pm. Must visit.

This majestic and gigantic temple complex on a hill side is one of the most prominent landmark of Penang ,and a hugely popular tourist attraction. This temple was build more than 100 years ago, and construction was completed in 1905. Over the years, it has slowly been expanded and a huge standing statue replica of Bodhisattva Avalokiteswara, or Goddess of Compassion was build on top of a little hill in recent years. It was a beautiful sight to behold, especially during festivities like Chinese New Year with the lanterns brightly lit up. You can either drive your car up to the temple building, and travel by cabled lift up to the higher hill where the statue is. Entrance is free. But the lift is chargeable.

Beautiful temples, easier to drive to visit the Giant Kuan Yin, and then to the pagoda. Big temples .. lots of Buddha statues. Also, visited and climb to the top of pagoda. Will be great if they can maintain the halls of the pagoda better ...

One of the most magnificent temples that I have ever visited. Lots of impressive structures and the temple is still expanding (under construction). Walkable from Air Itam market so do have a famous laksa and aid kacang before walking up to the temple. Recommend buying the full set of lift tickets for 16 MYR so you can get up and down easily. The lifts close at 5:30pm so be careful with the time, otherwise it would be quiet a walk. There are many halls for praying and worshiping. If you get there at the right time, you can see monks and nuns chanting at one of the halls. Be careful of a lady near the fish pond who asks to draw portraits of you (10 MYR per person, 20 MYR per couple). She said she was self-taught for 10 years, did a good job that would surprise you and people tend to pay her more. BUT what we got was like a 2-year old’s drawing! We were gutted and that portrait went straight in the bin.

If you go by car, go to the top without giving up. In this way, you do not need to take the cable car. We went by motor. Cable car is expensive. The temple is very beautiful, its top point is paid. Say hello to the turtles. Don't forget the huge lizard. The view from the top is beautiful. Don't forget to ring the bell ☀️

The temple is in a phenomenal location and offers fantastic views. For those seeing a spiritual breather from the breakneck pace of the city below there's something here for you, too. Believers kneeling and saying their prayers, lighting incense sticks, writing wishes on ribbons. It is magical. Come here and feel it.

Such a fascinating site that is enriched all the more with a guide. The history is gripping and peaceful if the monks are conducting a ceremony. Not to mention that the view from the top is incredible and frankly covid is a great time to go since it's not crowded. The temple is consistently under repair and expansion but rather than taking away from the experience it provoked and inspired me to return one day to see what development will have taken place

This is probably one of the highly tourist attraction being given major promotion though it's just a place of worship. This landmark draws huge number of tourists yearly to the island caters for all level of society. Can't denied the facts that this is a magnificent place of worship but it has become too commercialised. There's a misconception placed on every visitors coming here that they should contribute something from joss-sticks, candles, lucky charms, souvenirs, donations or parking. You're not spared the minute you enter the compound, you can expect certain forms of charges awaiting you. It's imaginable that the temple needs certain funds to operate and run this place but not to the extend of coaxing a visitor into submitting to various forms of charges every corner of the temple. Overall I am fascinated with the architecture aspects of the temple with a mixture of cultural blending that makes pretty attractive shots for the aperture. You can come here just to relax or enjoy the island view. Little is done to promote the religion but more to promote marketings for generating more money. I can only say it's beautiful on the architecture built-up but not so promising on the religious education for a devotee, visitors will definitely enjoy the magnificent views but devotees are far fetch being misplaced between religion and beliefs. Take a trip to form your own opinion, mine is purely subjective of my own accord, not to criticize or to write negative feedbacks.

Largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia. This is when CNY 2022 lights installation. Car parking is available with charge around RM 3. No entrance fee. If you couldn’t climb, you can use lift to go up(charges applicable which I didn’t use) . To the shops at upstairs, you need to pay RM2 per person for entry fee.

Very quiet in the 3rd week of Dec21 (phase 4 mco). Cool breeze, sun-less adventure made walking around the area, temple to temple visits and climbing the 7-storey old pagoda a pleasant experience.

I didn't expect this temple area to be that huge & so inclined. It has several separated areas that are connected by asphalt road (no pedestrian), but you can definitely ask the grab driver to drive you directly to the top, the main pagoda. When I went there, there was a location that was burnt & renovated...so we couldn't see anything on that part. The top pagoda was really huge and the view from the top was amazing. But other than that, I didn't really find this place to be a must-see...

The Kek Lok Si Temple, perched majestically on a hillside in Penang, Malaysia, is a sprawling testament to the rich tapestry of cultural diversity that defines the region. This colossal Buddhist temple complex seamlessly blends architectural splendor, religious significance, and breathtaking natural surroundings. The main attraction, the Ban Po Thar (Ten Thousand Buddhas Pagoda), stands tall, adorned with intricate carvings and countless Buddha statues, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. The temple's architectural fusion of Chinese, Thai, and Burmese influences is a captivating representation of Malaysia's multicultural identity. Ascending the inclined path, visitors encounter the towering Goddess of Mercy (Kuan Yin) statue, an awe-inspiring manifestation of compassion overlooking the temple grounds. The Air Hitam or "Black Water" Hall houses a towering statue of the Laughing Buddha, exuding joy and positive energy. The temple complex also serves as a vibrant center for cultural activities, particularly during Chinese New Year, when it transforms into a dazzling display of lights and decorations, attracting locals and tourists alike. Navigating the vibrant souvenir stalls and vegetarian eateries within the temple's precincts adds an extra layer to the overall experience. The serene atmosphere and panoramic views from the higher vantage points make Kek Lok Si Temple a must-visit destination, providing a profound glimpse into Malaysia's multicultural heritage and spiritual traditions.

A must see (though not in the hot sun...)! Be careful when driving all the way up as it is easy to miss the turn left into the temple at the highest tier. A $3 parking fee is needed before you can proceed further in. The photos don't do justice to the majesty of the statues. If you would like to, different types of prayers can be offered at the main prayer hall . No comments about other parts of the temple at the middle or lower tier as we just wanted to visit the guanying statue.

went to the top of the seven-storied pagoda and take photos of the amazing views. However, the third floor and above were not cleaned thoroughly, and plastic bottles and trash were scattered about. There is a parking lot. I bought a round trip lift ticket and went to the top. There is also a souvenir shop. Since I went early in the morning, it wasn't crowded and I was able to enjoy the scenery in the morning.😁

Recommend to visit on morning or evening, if you're coming when night, it's going to be a very different situation. First of all, parking. The parking will be very super difficult to be found , if you are unlucky you might find no parking, it's almost impossible to park there without giving those Indian money.( Cost around rm3-10) Second, prepare water if you want to visit to the guanyin temple, you might to walk for a 15 minute to reach there, if you reach there when night, you need to pay extra in order to visit inside , but there's also a cable car service there, you can try it if you wish to. However, apparently Malaysia are known for its heartwarming scorching Weather, so please choose a perfect time to visit if you don't wish to have a sunburnt. Recommend 6-7pm

This temple regarded as the most famous on the Island. Built in 1890, over a plot of an area of 12 hectares (30 acres), it is said to be the largest Buddhist temple in the country. Further read, this temple is a pilgrimage place of worship for neighboring Southeast Asian countries. Do visit if you come to Penang.

This is a must to visit place! huge Temple, beautiful structures & green forest 🌳 surrounding on the mountain 🏔. Due to the short of timing, I didn’t have enough time to explore everywhere but good enough to share with everyone. I took the cable/elevator up there with paid a small fee. Suggested for those with children & elderly. I was able to see the few big Statuses on top of mountain & few small/big temples in different level grounds. Beautiful mountain view & garden 🪴. Actually there were so many things to see. Quite attractive to me that was a turtle 🐢 pond at the front entrance, so impressive to see such a big population of these ❤️🐢! I would suggest to spend entire day to enjoy this temple & street food vendors surrounding areas.

Loved this place. Absolutely amazing lit up for Chinese New Year. Point to note, its lit up both before and after New year for a number of weeks, so if you can, choose time a bit away from CNY itself so it's less crowded. I visited the days directly after New year and it was a long queue and delay to drive there and difficult to get a grab back. However we walked a good 1.5km down from temple and was able to get a grab then.

The most beautiful and colorful Buddhist temple I have ever seen in Malaysia. It is located on a hill so the views from there are spectacular. It is huge inside with so many golden statues that will leave you breathless. There's a giant Buddha on top of the hill that you need to take a funicular for, it's not necessary in my own opinion, since the temple has already much to offer. Must visit if you are in Penang, you can combine it in one trip with the hill

My first visit to this temple in day and night on the same day. It is so astonishing looking at the lights that lit up the whole temple. It is such a beauty in the night. I am a visitor and was told that the temple was lit up during this Lunar new year 2024. I am so lucky to catch the view of this beauty. My holiday here is fruitful so far. Would recommend people to pay a visit during the day though you may not have the opportunity to see the night lights.

(Translated by Google) Luckily, I went to the lantern festival in February and it was so pretty. The night view is wonderful and there are many things to see. However, there are too many cars at this time and it's hard to grab a grab. (Original) 운이 좋게도 2월달 등불축제에 다녀왔는데 너무 예뻤어요. 야경도 멋지고 볼것도 많아요. 다만 이때는 차가 너무 많고 그랩잡기도 힘들어요.

Ticket price for malaysian is RM 6 two way for inclined lift to go to kwan yin statue. Also can take buggy. Nicely kept and very unique and precise architecture. Feel calm if you are here. Worth going. The only complaint I have here is people sitting along the way and begging for money. The temple committee atleast can hire them for a temple work and give them a shelter rather then allowing then to beg along the way to inclining lift. Bad impression to the country since this is one of the top tourist spot in penang.

Beautiful place to visit... I came on sunday around 10am, not many people came so still quite... Free entry if you are not using the tram until reach the top and going down again... Also you can use grab and stop at inflift area or ask the grab to bring you until reach the top also possible and you can go down by walk until reach the first stage... For me since I dont have long time to visit so I booked grab until inflift area and take the return trip using tram for RM 16.. Then explore around... Since there is no guide or notes, so I little bit not understand for the function in every places... Only know main hall, some of the statue, and turquoise pool...

The is the temple of temple in Penang, or perhaps even Malaysia. Must visit when you're in Penang, no excuses. You get tok enioy the view atop the hill, pray to various Buddhas and deities. Offer your sacrifices and etc. There's a short cable car within the temple to take you to the top too. Ample parking spaces.

The car lifts are improving with nice air conditioning. It was a splendid moments to have a visit again to Guan Yin Statue. This afternoon is quite humid and warm weather so it is recommended to have plenty of water bottles. But you may have laksa and sugar cane juice at Air Itam Pasar Laksa Penang there.

This is quite a good place to visit if you ever come to Penang. Do come early as there is quite a lot to go through and if you like to take pictures, regardless of flowers, nature scenery or even portraits. This place gives you good foreground and background. Abundance of wonderful gardens. There is a very majestic statue which you just cannot miss. The workers there can have a little bit more manners but i guess thats just picking issues. Its very calm and peaceful to just have a walk around, a definite suggestion for those planning to come penang.

Marvelous, sprawling Bhuddist temple complex, built upon the hillside, overlooking Penang's city centre. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Penang for the gigantic Kuan Yin statue at the top, the tortoise pond, the pagoda, and the beautiful gardens. There may be a few small fees to enter the pagoda area, and the lift up to the statue, but entrance is generally free.

Kek Lok Si Temple is a must stop place if you are in Penang. Historical temple with huge statue and lots of breathing view from the top of the hill. There is also a mini cable car to bring you from the top to the 3rd station. Please do not litter and throw cigarette buts into flower pot! So irresponsible!

  • 4/5 Kevin K. 1 year ago on Google
Looks great I think the temple and it is quite high up compared to neighbouring areas so you can a view of the Penang state There’s a place to pray and also a pagoda where you can walk all the way to the top (7 lvls) and get a good view of the city Quite recommended

Huge temples, reminds me of a palace on a mountain. The panoramic view is nice. Nothing much to do apart from walking around the insides of the temples, and I would think coming here once is enough. The trams up and down are quite expensive at RM3 per station one way, so taking from the bottom all the way up could cost you about RM9-12 one way. Walking is a great alternative although the steep roads and hot sun would make quite the exercise.

The Kek Lok Si Temple is a Buddhist temple situated in Air Itam, Penang, Malaysia. It is the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia,[1] and is also an important pilgrimage centre for Buddhists from Hong Kong, the Philippines, Singapore and other countries in Southeast Asia. The entire complex of temples was built over a period from 1890–1930, an inspirational initiative of Beow Lean, the Abbot. The main draw in the complex is the striking seven-storey Pagoda of Rama VI (Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas) with 10,000 alabaster and bronze statues of Buddha, and the 36.57 metres (120.0 ft) tall bronze statue of Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy.

Always worth a visit to this place. Probably been 3~4 times in total. This time I actually walked up and it was far more interesting as I didn't miss as much stuff. Other reviewers are correct about construction, but I simply cannot remove a star for that as I'd rather it still be maintained and improved over time.

Great temple to see. Had a lovely morning here. RM2 to get into the Pagoda. RM3 to get the lift up to the big statue. We then just walked back down the hill.

  • 5/5 Lilly S. 4 months ago on Google
Beautiful temple. Worth visiting. Free of charge, except for the pagoda where you have to pay RM2 (worth it). You don't need to take the cable car except for when you want to go to the statue. Otherwise you're fine of just walking :).

Unusual temple for me anyway. Built on a hill with a huge standing buddha. A must see. Nice view of part of the City too. 204 bus from George Town. Seems to run regularly. Lots of places buy drinks and nibbles. Also, a fanicular train can take you up to the temple.

A beautiful temple, full of energy, silence and beauty. Located upstairs, it has 3 floors and many beautiful nooks and crannies. Admission is free, with minor costs when entering the cart or entering the pagoda. I recommend it to anyone who wants to experience good energy.
