Food was amazing and really friendly people. If you visit Mosselbaai this place you should definitely visit at least once for the day or for overnight stay. Seriously loved it and tip: try the onion rings with peppersauce and chicken schnitzel

It was such a nice experience. We decided to "treat ourselves" so we booked one of the royal caboose rooms. It had an amazing view of the beach and ocean! (one caboose room has a view of the mountain and not the beach so just make sure you know which one you get.) The sound of the waves crashing on the beach was very calming (and so close). It has a private balcony area which was great. It was big enough (which judging by some previous reviews isn't always the case for other rooms). It also has its own on suite bathroom (which some of the smaller rooms don't have - they have shared bathrooms). The caboose royal suits also have a safe parking area with a remote controlled gate. An English breakfast is included.

Will give it a 4.5 stars. Always room for improvement. Would like to see more variety on menu for non-fish lovers at affordable prices. Otherwise one of the best stays of our lives. Beautiful staff, so friendly. Very neat rooms with comfortable beds. Love it

We stopped for lunch on the way back to CPT and had fish and chips. The fish was so fresh and well-cooked and the chips light and crispy. The menu may be a little limited but when you have the view over Santos Beach that you have, you can't really go wrong 👍

Stayed here for a weekend in a single room. All of the staff I chatted to were extremely friendly and helpful. They come with a buffet style breakfast in the mornings. They offer toast, cereals, yogurt, fruit and really, really good muffins along with coffee tea and fruit juice. It is also a restaurant so you can just buy something else if healthy breakfasts aren't your vibe. The cheaper rooms don't match the website in terms of view - the trees between the lodge and beach have grown quite a bit and trimming trees is not cheap, never-mind trees on public property. They do help the braai area feel a lot more private at least. The whole train is fenced in - and each compartment has a gate just that you open with your gate remote. Additionally, security guards aren't uncommon to see in the area. The rooms also come with physical latches. If you stay in a room without an en-suite bathroom - the lodge doesn't provide towels so make sure to pack another along with your beach towel. The bathrooms are clean but as it's a communal use area, I'd recommend wearing flip flops in the shower. Staying in a train on the beachfront is definitely an awesome experience and something I would recommend trying at least once.

I spent two nights in this place and the staff were so nice, kind and helpful! Loved the view from the room. Generally speaking the place has the best views overlooking the ocean and some mountains. Recommended!

We stayed the luxury class carriages which comes with it's own individual viewing deck to relax on and enjoy the view. The feeling of the setting was like stepping in a Victorian era time machine. The carriage itself is obviously quite old but that, in my opinion, only adds to the authentic feel of a bygone era. Our package included safe secure parking as well as a delicious breakfast enjoyed while overlooking the ocean. Paying the extra bit of money for the luxury package was worth it.

Reception: Helpful and friendly Room: Clean but very basic. Beautiful view. Stuffy, no windows opened and most windows could not open. No interior decoration No hand towels. Were not able to connect to the wi-fi whilst in the room. Not 4 star and overpriced in my opinion (our room at least). Restaurant: Basic menu options, menu looks like a flip file full of notes and colourful flyers. “Cold” atmosphere. Fake flowers and plants - no theme, no colour scheme, nothing special. Wanted to order sushi, chef not available and waiter did not know. Interior can really be improved. Calamari starter and service was good. Wanted to have dinner but restaurant closed earlier than regular “because it was quiet”. Were charged for breakfast which was supposed to be included in the rate we paid. Good experience (train effect), but will not return in a hurry.

As a youngster, I enjoyed many train trips with my family, so it was fun to experience that feeling of sleeping on the coach again after all these years. It would be great to have a dimmable light or night light option like the original, but overall I enjoyed the reminisce 😀

Going to sleep with the ocean waves in the background on a train 🤩. I think that counts as a unique experience. The Royal Suites are worth the price and privacy. The access to the beach that is a few metres from your doorstep is a plus. The restaurant and the food were good with generous portions on offer. A great choice for those looking for something different.

Being right on the beach was lovely, however being an old train car the rooms were rather narrow (but that's to be expected). Breakfast could have been better, however it was overall a rather nice stop over.

The positives are it's location, right at the beach, and the very friendly staff. The negative is that the train carriages are in need of maintenance and general refurbishment. Everything felt and looked old and uncared for. The idea is great, to be accommodated in vintage SAR railway carriages, but they're a tad tired now and just need to be cleaned, restored and renovated again.

I have always wanted to stay here. I can now mark it off. It is definitely budget friendly and you pay for what you get. Being on the tallish side, the bed isn't long enough (I understand about available space in the compartments and there is nothing to be done about it). Just know that you will sleep cramped. Next I would like to try one of the suites with its own bathroom and a normal sized double bed. I believe that would be excellent. Would I recommend it? Yes if you are aware of the restrictions of the standard compartment. It is definitely budget friendly and the view is awesome.

Had brunch here. Service is very slow. Food was average pub grade. Edible but bland. Amazing views over the bay. Great place for cocktails and sundowners.

The R1350 spent for a night did not match my expectations. Bed was highly uncomfortable Barely any hot water Toilet seat won't stay up ( which gets really annoying at night ) Breakfast was terrible I will personally not be staying with you again.

We stayed in the economy coach compartments. Economy, but everything is clean, neat and perfectly maintained. Shared toilets and showers but cleaning staff (Johanna) do a good job and are on duty till late evening. It is on the main beach in Mossel Bay. The location could not be better. It is within walking distance to town, a bit far but manageable. A light breakfast is served in the restaurant. Perfect for a start to the day.

What can I put into words how great a place this is. Its affordability to anyone makes this my nr1 favourite destination when travelling We spent half our trip on the one side . And the other half on the Royal . It's both fantastic .. classy in the royal. Practical on the other. Love love love ❤️ this destination. I'm even considering having a wedding here . Enjoy future travellers ! Maybe we have a cocktail 🍸 at the bar ..

By far the friendliest, nicest, helpfull and caring staff I have ever experienced making saying goodbye to them a sad farewell❤️❤️. Stunning location right on the beach where you can fall asleep with the crashing waves. Only downside would be that the WiFi does not work in the rooms and one two point plug is not really sufficient to charge more than one device in a room. Overall sweet and cozy small and safe accommodation where you fall in love with the staff.

Good food, friendly staff, only disappointment was that they did not have any jalapeno poppers. So the kitchen decided to replace it with muchrooms, without informing us. Remember, not all people eat mushrooms. Otherwise the rest was tasteful and good.

My fiance and I had a wonderful experience. The lady (kim) who showed us our room (carriage) was very friendly and polite. Going to sleep and waking up with the sound of the waves was our favorite part.

What an experience! Rooms are cleaned daily and includes kettle coffee/tea, sugar and milk. I stayed in the Caboose honeymoon rooms and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Will definitely be back. The pics are the views from my balcony. Oh and included is a little portable braai outside my private balcony. Simply fabulous.

Very neat and clean. They just need to show the rooms as they are not display something else on the internet and get totally different room. Managing expectations at all times. Otherwise thumbs up...

We were very dissappointed when we booked they say it is on the beach with a view but we have bushes in front of the windows could see nothing. The rooms is very small nowhere to put your bags so keep that in mind when booking. The breakfast was good.

Surprising that towels and complimentary toiletries supplied in the double rooms but not the singles. Made for awkward situation as we were 3 in the party and had both accomodation types. Unusual and generally good value for money . Will stay again.

Sorry to say, but the service was non existent. I was on cruches, no one advised me to a table. After I asked for a table and was seated, Ive waited 20 minutes before I was served with drinks. I had to ask for a menu. The picture shows what a R75 calamari basked looked like, served without sauce. Sorry, you dont see me again.

I would have loved to have gotten on the train itself but did not make it past the reception. 3 people in reception noticed I was there but did not make any attempt to receive or acknowledge that I was there. Instead just kept on watsapp and talking between themselves. Would not have given this star!

Bit pricey for the room(royal). The duvet cover had seen better days. The room was supposed to be clean, but used underpants was found on the ground at the end of the bed. One towel was torn and if you are not an earlybird the guests next door uses all the hot water and you are left with a nice cold shower on a winter's morning.

Sadly it was an absolutely terrible experience. I would have given a second star for the clean bed, but as the shutters in the cabin didn‘t work, the sunlight will get in permanently. Since it‘s no problem to check in at late midnight and the train is very poorly soundproofed, be prepared that your whole bed is shaking when someone is walking on the floors. This gets a whole lot better when whole families with screaming children bring their stuff into the cabins at 11:30pm and everyone takes a shower right next to your cabin slamming the doors like nobody else is in the train until almost 1am in the morning. If that wasn‘t enough, if you try to take a nap during the day, be prepared that the cleaning ladies start their work at 7am, as soon as someone checks out, doing their work until 4pm in the afternoon. When you come out of your cabin to go to the bathroom, you‘ll get surprised with them sitting on the toilets for their breaks, forcing you to go to another bathroom in the train.

We did not stay at the train but we had lunch at the restaurant, the service is absolutely horrible, the food is not good, we ordered food my food and my sons food arrived 15min apart and my wife’s food arrived much later, the waitress does not seem to know what is happening around her, for a place that states our food is good, really needs to take a good look at what they are serving, will not recommend there food at all

Awesome location and rooms. Right next to the beach. The rooms with private bathrooms (Caboose) are great to stay in. It's actual train coaches modified into a room. The wheels and tracks are still there. Room has a nice bathroom, fridge and tea/coffee set and a private balcony overlooking the sea. Restaurant is at the front. Food is good- not 5-star. But overall the experience of spending the night in the train coach is awesome. Parking available.
