Nice views from the top of the lighthouse. It was amazing to see the biggest flag in South Africa, about the size of a tennis court- it's the highest in SA and second highest on the African continent.

The well kept lighthouse can be accessed for a small fee. On reaching the top, there is a magnificent panoramic view of the bay and surrounding area. There is a tennis court size South African flag flying from the adjacent flagpole! (not sure why it was at half-mast)

The light house is a must. For just R10.00 you can climb up to the top and see the great views of the beach and town.

Second visit to this area. Enjoyed both visits equally. Employees at the Tourist information office was helpful and even insisted that a security officer accompany us on the walk through.

It's interesting to have a look at but I'm a bit nervous of the area it's located in from a safety point of view. It has a good view of the city and the bay. The little houses in the surrounding areas are very quaint.

WARNING! SCAM! There are a lot of criminals at this place. They tell you to buy a ticket either for parking your car or for visiting that place. Then they try to steal your money and credit card data. They were a uniform and even fake IDs. Police does not help you. My recommendation: Do not visit this place. It’s one of the ugliest places I have seen in my life anyway.

WATCH OUT we were told to get parking tickets and leaded into scam at an ATM, lost our bank passes... The people doing it looked like officals, wore badges. When approached I advise you to get out of the place asap!

This is a Mind Freeing and Body Cooling nature reserve in Central Port Elizabeth (Donkin Park). You thinking of bringing your own camp chair?..πŸ€” ... Ain't no need to bother yourself in a way. You just gotta bring yourself some friends and some good music, then let the moments roll

Very picturesque and great views of the CBD area and the Harbour. On my most recent visit it was quiet and we didn't go down to the pathway/track as I was alone with my young daughter. The security guards were sitting in the kiosk, they should have been more visible. Nonetheless, we took some photos and I gave my daughter a quick history lesson :) There's even a vintage red mailbox which fascinated my daughter.

Save parking, but the route is neglect, as no overseas visitors are here and place are dirty, but well marked. Seems that municipality misuse funds to keep route in good condition.

It's a nice place to visit but pity you constantly feel unsafe as it's surrounded by dodgy guys sitting in their cars which really spoils it.

It is a great place to visit when in P.E / Gqeberha.. The gigantic flag is very special and a lovely view of the harbour. The only reason for giving 4* instead of 5 is any visitors do need to be aware that this has become a dangerous part of the city. Only visit in the daytime and keep your wits about you. And Do NOT drive through the rest of Central towards Parliament street when you leave.., This has now become a gang owned territory. Rather go back to the main road towards the coast. Such a shame to see how Central has now become so blatantly run by criminals. Why the police/army don't clear the area is beyond me.

This was an interesting place to visit, we enjoyed seeing the memorial wall and the garden of remembrance. We also went up the light house which was an interesting experience. Going inside the lighthouse cost only R10. The grounds are unkempt though and there were a lot of unsavory characters loitering around, it helped that there was parking inside

It is a nice space. It invites the natural environment to attract people and make the area pedestrian active. The space is a memorial which attracts tourist and has a view towards the harbour. There is little shade on this big site. Which can cause it to be inactive. Specific foliage was planted to attract butterflies, as well as having steel cut silhouettes representing South African history. The reserve makes one feel like they are in a park away from the city. Please be careful when you are in the area visiting the Donkin Reserve

A real adventure if you’re up to it because the moving space up into the lighthouse is tight and crammed. Not for those with a phobia for small spaces.

The tour was quite interesting (and free). Not allowed to take pics on the tour, but you can in the museum. There are also some nice racing games to play after...

Such a great view into the past. The Volkswagen has come a long way and the Beetle (punch buggy) is a pretty iconic car. Definitely worth the stop. Try maybe to book for a factory tour (though it needs to be done in advance). Also, do take some wipes if you are planning on going upstairs to the simulation section.

For years I have wanted to see how cars are manufactured and finally got the opportunity to do so. Be warned however to phone in and book as space is limited and there aren't tours everyday. You will be carted carted around in a customized 7seater VW Polo golf cart and shown how the parts are pressed out, welded and assembled into a brand new vehicle - absolutely amazing. On returning to Auto Pavilion you can take a walk through memory lane through the museum and the science center explains how engines and aerodynamics work. Even a few sit in car games allowing the younger ones a virtual experience of riding a car. Expect to spend at least 3 hours for both tour and museum, making this a great family outing.

Great journey back in time bringing back wonderful memories of our own VW history. My absolute favourite is the Blue Beetle called Nomhle. Seeing the last citi golf produced sighed by thousands is truely special. A dream of mine is to have the split window combi with Hippies Era flowers on the car. Love the brand new sport VW! Staff are friendly and very helpful. Connected car era is going to be exciting and would love to be involved in an initiative like this with VW in my IT career.

It's always a treat visiting Donkin Reserve. However, it appears to be less safe with idle people staring at tourists. Some of the staff at the lighthouse sure need some customer relations training. Others are excellent.

  • 3/5 wildcoast g. 1 year ago on Google
It's very beautiful with stunning views, however the starking red water tanks in the very background that's is supposed to showcase the pyramid and lighthouse are an eyesore and defeats the whole purpose behind the yellow photo frame...and it's not clean around the precinct. Besides that it's a must see with the history and activities expressed through the mosaics, true gem.

Well kept. Nice view of PE port from the top. We unfortunately could not go up the light house as there were ppl already inside and we waited quit a long time for them to come down, we eventually gave up.

  • 3/5 Paul R. 1 year ago on Google
Beautiful place, but area is not really safe. Staff from the tourism office are very friendly and helpful! The climb to the top of the lighthouse was fun (and cheap!)

  • 3/5 Graham M. 1 year ago on Google
The concept and layout of the Donkin Reserve is great, as well as the story it attempts to tell. However the tourists that were with me didn't feel safe to complete the whole route and repeatedly commented on how much litter was lying around and how unkempt the gardens and grassy areas were. They noticed the number of security personnel in the area and suggested they should be utilised to pick up the litter that was blowing around the immediate area. A beautiful view site with great history and potential, just needs some hands on management.

  • 2/5 Jackie S. 11 months ago on Google
Far too many dodgy people having around that makes one feel unsafe to view the site. Loved the Mandela sculpture and the mosaic art work...could not view the light house area ....

  • 4/5 Timmybear T. 7 months ago on Google
A wonderful place to visit in PE/Gquberha. But like so many assets all around the country, the whole place needs attention. It was heartbreaking to see the degrading of the area!!
