We came for the holiday themed trains and were really impressed! They put a ton of detail in to each set, and it's great to see how they've recreated so many pieces of iconic American landscapes. Our kids really liked walking around and exploring the different scenes. Speaking of kids, the downstairs kids area of the museum is great for little ones. They have lots of hands-on toys that are perfect for younger kids. They would have spent hours down there! Also, parking is free if you park in the main underground garage and get your ticket validated in the museum.

It's been a while since we've visited The Eiteljorg Museum. We decided to come because my 2yr old loves trains & the Jingle Rails exhibit was open. It was very nice. The kids also enjoyed the Canal Level exhibit. I personally, love to see all of the artwork. However, the kids (2yrs-12yrs) don't seem to enjoy it much. I'd recommend The Eiteljorg Museum for an adult outing or for kids interested in art.

Jingle Rails is an amazing holiday experience. A unique view of Indianapolis and other states and miniatures, surrounded by amazing model trains.

The model train display was the best I've ever seen. I recommend you take the free guided tour.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. The staff was rather stalkerish. I'm a Black woman with 10 tattoos. Nine of them were visible. I guess I stood out. Nonetheless they were very friendly and helpful. The display rooms are very deceptive in size. Just when you think you're at the end another nook and cranny pops up for you to explore. Whoever designed the second floor was also a master of deception. Rooms that look tiny open up when you turn the corner. I was happily exhausted by the time my phone died and I could no longer take pictures. There's a very interesting film playing that you have to listen to. It's different native people speaking about the art they create. I will return to this museum. If you love beautiful native art and history and you're in Indianapolis check them out.

The Eiteljorg is great! I’ve been four or five times and always enjoy it. ‘The Twins,’ is my favorite painting there and always makes me smile. Great mustaches on those guys. My kids had a great time too. On the last visit they had added wooden puzzles of a few of the paintings which my younger children really enjoyed.

Beautiful artwork throughout. The facility is gorgeous, and the thoughtful arrangements of the exhibits is tasteful. Simple, interesting and sophisticated. The stories of the people and the beauty of the art make this a great place to spend a morning. I am glad we visited this museum.

Beautiful Museum. Quiet, clean, lots of space, and seating around to sit and study the art. Very kid friendly, with little activities spread throughout. Great experience!

Enjoyed our afternoon at the museum. They are under renovation, so not all the rooms were open. Would like to go back when all the exhibits are open. Had lunch in the Cafe which was enjoyable

I've been here a couple of times, and it's pretty neat. It's one of those odd places that you find from time to time that don't quite fit in with their location. A museum that has absolutely nothing to do with Indiana, right smack dab in the middle of Indiana. But, I'll still enjoy it anyway! It is nice not having to travel out west to see something like this. Lots of interesting pieces, ranging from the 1800s to modern times (within the past few years). It's a good idea to make sure you have several hours to wander around, especially if you're someone who likes to read all the placards. The parking is pretty spendy, so if you are local, and there's a decent chance you'll return within a year, buying the membership is pretty much a no-brainer.

The popular Indian’s from all over the world is here dancing and it’s so beautiful to watch them. Me, and my two sisters are having a great Friday night and my sister had surprised me and my other sister with tickets to this wonderful night out.

We went to the Eiteljorg Museum today; it's about Native American Indian history and crafts. I was very excited about going, but it was a major let down when we got there. It was nothing but pictures and statues, and a lot of walking around without much to see. Now don't get me wrong, I'm very interested in Indians, because I'm part Cherokee also, but the museum was very sparse...a lot of the rooms were fairly empty. I will say there was several areas set up with things to do for the kids, in each area, and that kept our grandson occupied. They also had a children's area for them to be entertained, on the lower level. **I might go back someday if they get more to look at.** We did get in for FREE and we didn't have to pay for parking either, BUT, that was because we checked out the museum member card from our local library. I wouldn't have been very happy if we had paid for this trip! Be prepared to spend some hefty cash if you go, because we got our grandson a gift from the gift shop, a smallish Lego set with a big book of different things to build, and it was $25.00 + tax. They did have a lot of things to sell, and I believe it's almost all authentic Native American items, so that will make it pricey. We ate in the Cafe, and for me, my husband, and our grandson, it was over $47.00!

On our first visit to the Eiteljorg we went to check out The Jingle rails and didn't leave ourselves enough time to check out the Museum before closing. We are looking forward to coming back to learn more about the rich Native American & South Western cultures.

This is an excellent spot to experience and learn about Native America culture. The exhibits are impressive. There is an attached Cafe to have lunch that overlooks the canal, making it a great spot to start a Canal walk from.

Beautiful artwork. Would have liked to see some more native artists. The artist in residence was a lovely lady from the Hochunk tribe she was very warm and very knowledgeable about many different tribes

The collections are amazing. I highly recommend coming by for a visit. I especially enjoyed the children’s areas where there are more interactive displays. There’s a lovely bistro inside where you can get lunch or a cup of coffee, and look out onto the grounds. The customer service is great.

Extraordinary collection with kind and helpfull staff. The shop had some unique items, and our little one loved the family area in the basement. Down there we saw a corn figure (in the photo), but I forgot to ask more info about it. Maybe next time...

Beautiful exhibits. You'd need a whole day for this visit. Wonderful learning experience. We walked out appreciating the Indian culture even more than we've had before (in the past, visited many cultural sites in the Western and Eastern states). This is a great place to start when exploring the life and culture of different tribes in Indiana. Also, we got to see the Andy Warhol's exhibit, which was very interesting - I've always wondered what was his connection to American Indians.

I had never been, in all the time it has been around. Throughly enjoyed the Changing Views: The Photography of Dorothea Lange exhibit. It got me in the door to experience it, as well as the rest of the museum. Loved the kids interactive area on the lower level. My niece is 12 and still got into playing the role of cantina waiter and riding the pony. It was time well spent.

The museum is fascinating ESPECIALLY for the Native American floor! I found this museum on Google while trying to find fun things to do in IN… I really wish more places throughout the US dedicate more exhibitions to Native and the Indigenous communities that exist throughout North America. I learned soo much about their cultures and their history. And am eager to learn more…

Great place to learn about the Native Americans and their culture and artistry. Also, art depicting the "Old West" in sculpture and paintings. My favorite artist is Frederic Remington and I was able to see his bronze work and paintings, a truly talented American artist. The upstairs exhibit focused on tribes of Indiana as well as the rest of the nation's. The staff was very friendly, and able to answer any questions I had. The gift shop had a vast assortment of things to choose from, ranging from $-$$$. The restroom was very clean. I would recommend this museum to anyone. A++

I love this museum. So many artifacts and history! There was even a guided tour that engaged the children and captured their attention. There is a hands on history center downstairs where children are free to run around touch and experience everything! If you get hungry, don't worry...they have a restaurant on site that serves up delicious provisions!

The museum is relatively expensive, but it's worth the price. I would suggest parking elsewhere in the city if you are fine with walking. The grounds are well kept, so you can have a enjoyable walk there as well. There are plenty of statues and a beautiful fountain! It's a great place to go if your looking for a day outing with family or friends.

It has some very interesting exhibits, and some of the best paintings I've seen in awhile. Well worth the fee ( $15.00 per person, for those of you who want to know ), and the time spent. Highly recommend if you have the time, lots of items to look over.

I learned a lot about the Native American culture of the Miami, Potawatomi and the Delware. Being from New Mexico, a place that embraces the native culture more than most other states, it was good to see an effort put in to remember the people that where here first.

A wonderful native american art and culture museum. The highlight for our family is always the "jingle rails" exhibit. However the indian market festival in the summer is fantastic as well. Parking will be validated if you park in their garage & you present garage ticket at front desk. There is a cafe. You can also walk the canal after your museum visit. Really expensive if you don't have a discount or are a teacher. Not really worth the price. Even for Jingle Rails.... going once is probably enough.

  • 4/5 Michelle S. 4 years ago on Google
Was really cool! Went specifically for the Jingle Rails exhibit and love it, worth $15 alone. We also saw the rest of the museum too, less interactive than I thought it be. It's mostly art museum though there are two exhibits on the second floor that are interactive one of them goes through the history and culture of different Native American communities the other is for art that you are allowed to touch(my favorite exhibit). Overall it's good for gathering information but I wouldn't suggest you bring your kids, but they might get bored.

The last gallery on the left, upstairs is the reason to come. Skip the white-washed American West exhibit in the main hall. It tells the revisionist history of Wild Bill and Zane Grey. But upstairs there are some good exhibits, especially the last one om the left, the Please Touch gallery of sculptures by the amazing Michael Naranjo, a blind Native and Vietnam veteran.

Wonderful museum. Gorgeous works of art, and pieces both from actual Native Americans and from artists commemorating the old American West. Everything was presented in an incredibly respectful manner, and it was clear the museum employs and works with actual Native Americans to ensure pieces are presented in a respectful and accurate manner, rather than just as an old roadside oddity as has often been done in our nation's history. Overall this was a delightful and educational way to spend the afternoon.

Eiteljorg is a must see when in Indy. The collection is diverse with an emphasis on Western art, but also interpretive areas with artifacts and artwork of North American Indian cultures and regions. They have excellent contemporary exhibits and a children's exploration area. When possible, parking is validated in their garage. We also had a meal at the cafe. The butternut squash and beet salad was tasty and prices affordable. Loved the southwest influenced interior design.

What a wonderful facility. My wife and I visited last week and certainly enjoyed our time there. Staff is impeccably trained and friendly. Exhibits were thought-provoking and impressive. Displays were separated by type of art (play space for paintings, a space for baskets, Etc.) I personally found this to be well done. If you enjoy the culture of Native Americans or Western Art, it is not to be missed. Plan on spending two to three hours. Do not pass by the gift shop thinking it is probably full of standard gift shop trinkets. The content is impressive. We loved our visit, and have been talking about it with one another off and on since being there. Truth be told, it wasn't just a visit. It was an experience.

The museum missed 5 stars because one of its wings were closed. The primary area on the main floor was open which contained in my opinion the most important art work of the museum. An amazing collection of art and bronze figures. I loved it all.

Marvelous experience... the Native American and Wild West Exhibit was breathtaking.

  • 4/5 Angela D. 2 years ago on Google
Visited on national museum day. The museum was not as expected, as the exhibits focus on western and native american art, not necessarily history of any kind (which is what we thought). The majority of the art were done by colonizers, not natives, which was a bit disappointing. Only one or two small sections focused on Native American art, was hoping for more. Besides this, the art was beautiful, with much to see. Good for an hour visit.

Quite disappointing expereince, the building seems huge, promissing a lot of content, but the exhibitions are quite limited, although a part of them is under conservation or reconstruction, idk, so perhaps when available in full, it might be more worthwhile. Also the content that was available was rather neat. But overall it looked like the museum is busier organizing commercial stuff and selling souvenirs than being a museum. When it comes to the museum store, it was full of staff pretty much gossiping on random topics, I get it people are just people but found it quite rude, idk. For now, not comming back unless some new content arrives.

It was absolutely amazing! Incredible artwork and native american history in one! Really love going. Warhol was awesome! Really crazy seeing his art in person 😃.

They admit they stole the land from Native Americans (see photos), but won’t give it back and pay rent? At least one of their featured artists isn’t fooled by the white saviors. Great kids’ section in the basement, plus the art you’d expect for adults upstairs.

Visiting from CO and dropped by to see a Western Warhol exhibit. Was pleasantly surprised by the eclectic collection of western art and artists. Very nice staff and beautiful museum. I recommend a visit when in the area.

Wow! As an art dealer and collector and a Realtor in Portland Oregon I was in town for a Realtor meeting and thought I’d check out this museum before I headed to the airport. It’s an INCREDIBLE museum! It’s a modern clean, light and bright building with higher ceilings and lots of space and a fantastic collection of Indian art. I spent two hours there and closed it down. I’ll be back. Strongly recommended for anyone interested in native arts from Inuit sculptures to desert plies air artists and more.

Our first trip to this museum and we all loved it! Definitely more of a look and don't touch kind of museum. I also asked about kid classes upfront, but they had never heard of that type of thing. We homeschool and many places offer a once a month or every other week classes to get a little more in depth and hands on with the material. Generally they are an extra charge, but usually $10-$15 a class. So I would be interested in these type of classes at the Eiteljorg, or offering suggestions on types they could do.

Took my son to see the Dorothy Lang Art exhibit also the Western art exhibits, and Native Americans' art exhibits. This is something he wanted to do for his birthday. We enjoyed spending the time together and discussing the art pieces and their different artistic techniques. We were there for two and one half hours. It was a pleasant experience. There are seats to set and rest in the exhibits if one needs to since there is lots of standing and walking involved. The Western museum even has a couple of jumbo sized puzzles on tables made from wood that you can put together. Several older children were working at them while mom and dad looked at paintings. They also have a cafe you may go to if you need something to eat or drink. But don't take food or drinks into exhibits, please! There is a map of all the exhibits given to you. If you are a senior, your ticket has a discounted price to it. Just go to the Eiteljorg museum website, and you may get the information there.

Beautiful artwork and loved the sensory stations and inclusion for children to learn about art, textiles, and history.

Kinda pricey for what you get it. But there are some discounts for being a student, out of state person, and senior citizen. It was kinda short. Only two floors and some rooms were just paintings. Also I wish there was more information for some of the pieces in the cases upstairs. But they do give you a free parking pass.

We really enjoyed Jingle Rails! Beautiful display and not crowded. Our 2 year old son enjoyed the interactive area in the basement too. We will go back again next Christmas.

Had a really good time in the museum. Very insightful with many wonderful exhibits. Very friendly and courteous staff. Also very interactive with not only the exhibits upstairs but also in the lower level where it's more Hands-On for younger patrons of the museum.
