Sompur Mahavihar is located at Paharpur in Banglagachhi upazila of Naogaon district. It is one of the earliest sites of Bengal. It was added as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. Where significant numbers of Hindu status were found. It is one of the most famous example of architecture in Pre- Islamic Bangladesh. It dates from a period to the nearby Halud Vihar and to the Sitakot Vihar in Nawabganj Upozila of Dinajpur District.

Historical Paharpur Mohabihar or Soampur Bihar is for the people who wants to visit Historical places and who want to reconnect with few nature. The monastery was build by King Dharmapal Dev in late eighth/nineth Century. The Monastery is 5.5 Km away from Jamalgonj Railway station, 13 Km away from Joypurhat Railway station and 32 Km from Noagaon Bus Stand. You can see a lot of Buddist ancient artistry inside the bihar. Suitable for a day long programme with friends and family to avail a holiday. Few dry food shop and one Restaurant available inside the monastery. The area is so hot and humid during summer, my recommendation is to come winter and spring to avoid hot weather. A lot of walkways and ground for playing, walking for kids also. Thank you!! Ticket Price: 20 BDT For Adult 05 BDT for Child & Student 100 BDT for SAARC forigner 200 BDT for the forigner other than SAARC

This Buddhist monastery at Paharpur in Naogaon is an important archaeological site of Bangladesh. It was founded in the 8th century during the reign of the Pala dynasty and has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. Spread over about 11 hectares, the monastery complex bears witness to the elaborate architecture of the ancient Pala dynasty. While exploring the temple ruins, visitors can observe the main temple, the royal residences and the grand entrance. It is a noble symbol of the rich history and cultural heritage of the ancient Buddhist civilization of Bengal.

Loved it..very beautiful, full of scenic beauty.. Paharpur an important archaeological site in Bangladesh, situated in a village named Paharpur (Pahadpur) under the Badalgachhi Upazila of Naogaon district. The village is connected with the nearby Railway station Jamalganj, the district town Naogaon and Jaipurhat town by metalled roads. It is in the midst of alluvial flat plain of northern Bangladesh. In contrast to the monotonous level of the plain, stands the ruins of the lofty (about 24m high from the surrounding level) ancient temple which was covered with jungle, locally called Pahar or hill from which the palace got the name of Paharpur.

Paharpur is one of the best tourist places here in Naogaon. If you visit early morning like 10 am, there will be less people, less crowd, less sunlight and if your luck is good there will be some gentle breeze. The overall environment was so fresh and charming. You can visit there alone if you want some inner peace and also can visit with your friends and family for a quality time spending. There is food cart, some places to sit and the museum was also so good. You can see old historical things there.

One of the largest Buddhist convents in the world. You should know about the history and glorious past days of your nation. You can learn everything through internet but travelling / visiting is the best learning. So visit this place to enjoy a journey to the past. Magnificent view and awesome architecture made this place astonishing. So visit this place with your family, friends or arrange a picnic here. There's a museum also. It's well furnished, air conditioned and the museum has a good collection. A large number of antiquities are preserved and displayed here. I also noticed some old pictures of this convent. It was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. 8th century AD. A number of monasteries grew up during the Pāla period in ancient India in the eastern regions of the Indian subcontinent, comprising Bengal and Magadha. According to Tibetan sources, five great Mahaviharas stood out: Vikramashila, the premier university of the era; Nalanda, past its prime but still illustrious; Somapura Mahavihara; Odantapurā; and Jaggadala. [2] The monasteries formed a network; "all of them were under state supervision" and there existed "a system of co-ordination among them ... it seems from the evidence that the different seats of Buddhist learning that functioned in eastern India under the Pāla were regarded together as forming a network, an interlinked group of institutions, "and it was common for great scholars to move easily from position to position among them. Evidence of the rise of Mahayana Buddhism in Bengal from the 7th century onwards, Somapura Mahavira, or the Great Monastery, was a renowned intellectual centre until the 12th century. Its layout perfectly adapted to its religious function, this monastery-city represents a unique artistic achievement. With its simple, harmonious lines and its profusion of carved decoration, it influenced Buddhist architecture as far away as Cambodia. Paharpur Buddha bihar or Sompur Bihar: The most glorious place of interest in Badalgachhi Upazila, Naogaon District is Sompur Bihar or Paharpur Buddhist Monastery. Paharpur Buddha Bihar is located in Paharpur village under the present Paharpur Union Parishad. The name Paharpur is modern and the ancient name is Sompur. The Buddhist Pala dynasty was established in Bangladesh in the 7th century (770-810 AD). In the eighth and ninth centuries AD, Dharmapala, the second and third kings of the Pala dynasty, and his son Devpala established vast empires as far as Bengal, Bihar and Kannauj. This Paharpur monastery and temple were built in Bangladesh under their patronage in the era of extreme excellence of Buddhism. Although this monastery was reduced to rubble due to historical and geographical reasons, this magnificent monastery still stands proudly as the largest Buddhist monastery in Asia. The Paharpur Buddhist monastery had 16 rooms for Buddhist monks. Paharpur Buddhist Monastery is located on a total land of 70.31 acres. At present, the Bangladesh Archaeological Department has built a museum, a rest house and several administrative buildings here. As a result of excavations up to 1934 AD, the Archaeological Department discovered the rooms and the entire ruins surrounding the Vita of Satyapir and the temple on the east side of the monastery. In the center of the main monastery and around it are 196 living rooms, wide entrances, numerous entertainment stupas, small temples and ponds. The temple is 358 feet long from north to south and 314 feet wide from east to west. The main monastery is located in the middle of it. The evening was the daughter of the king here. Paharpur Buddhist Monastery is today recognized as one of the oldest cultural heritages in the world due to its large size and historical significance. It has recently been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. 63 idols can be seen in the stone gravel of Paharpur. Statues of many animals are also found in the temple. The height of the monastery from the mainland is about 72 feet. Paharpur can be identified as a mini version of the ancient Nalanda University. Every year many domestic and foreign tourists and common people gather here.

Shri Dharmapala Dev (61-621), the second king of the Pala dynasty, was building this monastery in the late eighth or ninth century. This huge structure was discovered by Sir Alexander Cunningham in 179 AD. Paharpur can be called the largest Buddhist monastery in the world. In size it can be compared to Nalanda Mahavihara in India. It has been a very famous Buddhist teaching center for 300 years. Not only from different parts of the subcontinent, but also from China, Tibet, Myanmar (then Burma), Malaysia, Indonesia, etc., Buddhists used to come here to acquire religious knowledge. Atish Dipankar Srigyan was the Acharya of Bihar in the 10th century AD. In 1985, UNESCO recognized it as a World Heritage Site. Paharpur Bodh Vihar. Somapura Mahavihara was located between Pundranagar (now Mahasthan), the capital of Pundravardhana, and another city, Kotivarsha (present-day Bangarh). Its ruins are located at Paharpur village in Badalgachhi upazila of Naogaon district in present day Bangladesh. On the other hand, its distance from Jamalganj railway station in Joypurhat district is only 5 km to the west. The antiquities cover an area of about 0.10 sq km (10 ha) in the village. The land plan of this archeological pattern is quadrangular in shape. It is located in the flood plain of North Bengal in Bangladesh, in the lowlands of the Pleistocene period called Barindra. The soil is reddish due to the presence of iron in the soil. However, at present the soil is covered with sediment in most places. It survives as a hilly structure about 30.30 m above the surrounding plains. The locals used to call it Gopal Cheetah Hill; Since then it has been called Paharpur, although its real name is Sompur Bihar. The context of the discovery Somapura Mahavihara, Bangladesh. Picture of a part of Somapura Mahavihara. Walls of Somapura Mahavihara premises After the arrival of the British in the Indian subcontinent, they started conducting survey work everywhere. Buchanan Hamilton conducted the survey in Eastern India; Who visited Paharpur at some point between 1808 and 1812 AD. This was the first archeological visit to Paharpur. Westmacott then visited the site. They returned to the country and published their experiences in newspapers. It is from this source that Alexander Cunningham visited this historic site in 179 AD. After the inspection, he expressed interest in excavating the land on a large scale. But the then zamindar of Balihar, the owner of the land, prevented him from doing so. So he continued digging in a small part of the Bihar area and in a small part of the top of the central mound of antiquities. During this excavation, he discovered a square building with a protruding part around the central mound, which was 22 feet in length. Finally, under the Archaeological Act of 1904, the site was declared a preserved antiquities in 1919.

(Naogaon) Paharpur part-1 I have Visited many ancient archeological sites but I have never been so captivated as "Moon-Mountain"! Wait No... Perhaps I would say, the artistic craft of the terracotta plaques of the "Kantawji Temple" was magnificent and so was the location of the temple. But... The unspoken history behind the vastness and inquisitive construction style of "Sompur Bihar" is extremely fascinating and intriguing. I wish ... If only someone would make a film on its history it would be no less wonderful than movies like Padmavati, Ashoka or Bajirao Mastani.

    (Translated by Google) Paharpur Paharpur Buddhist Monastery or Sompur Vihara or Sompur Maha Vihara is an ancient Buddhist monastery now in ruins. Sri Dharmapaladeva, the second king of the Pala dynasty, was building this monastery in the late eighth or ninth century. Sir Cunningham discovered this great feat in 179. In 1985, UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. Paharpur can be called the largest Buddhist monastery in the world. In size it can be compared to Nalanda Mahavihara in India. It has been a very famous Buddhist center for 300 years. Not only from different parts of the subcontinent, but also from China, Tibet, Myanmar (then Burma), Malaysia, Indonesia, etc., Buddhists used to come here to practice religion and acquire theology. Atish Dipankar Srigyan was the Acharya of Bihar in the 10th century AD. Its geographical position is 25 ´ 06 north to 25 ° 157 north latitude and 8 ৮৮ 508 east to 89 ৮ 107 east longitude. The antiquities cover an area of about 0.10 sq km (10 ha) in the village. The land plan of this archeological pattern is quadrangular in shape. It is located in the flood plain of North Bengal, Bangladesh, in the lowlands of the Pleistocene period called Barindra. The soil is reddish due to the presence of iron in the soil. However, at present this soil is covered with sediment in most places. It survives as a hill-like structure about 30.30 m above the surrounding plains. The locals used to call it 'Gopal Chitaar Pahar'. Since then it has been called Paharpur, although its real name is Sompur Bihar. Hiuen Tsang came to Pundravardhana in the middle of the 7th century and there is no mention of the monastery and temple at Sompur in his details. Gopal's son Dharmapala (61-622 AD) ascended the throne and ruled for a long time, extending the kingdom beyond Bengal Bihar to Gandhara on the north-western border of Pakistan. Emperor Dharmapala was a devout Buddhist and he founded Vikramshila and Sompur monasteries. According to another, the author of the famous Tibetan history book "Pag Sam Zone Zhang" very explicitly mentions the huge monastery and high temple built at Somapura by Dharmapala's son Devapala (610-650). It is mentioned in various inscriptions that the monks of Somapura Bihar used to donate money and gems to various Indian Buddhist pilgrimage sites like Nalanda, Buddhagaya etc. which indicate a prosperous condition in the 10th-11th centuries. Apart from Sompur Bihar under the patronage of the Pala kings till the 9th century, there are mentions of Agrapur (Agradigun of Rajshahi), Ushmapur, Gotpur, Etpur and Jagddal (Jagdal of Rajshahi) Bihar. Towards the end of the 9th century, Gurjar Raj made the first feast and Mahendra Pal caused special damage to the Pala Empire. Later, in the late 10th century, King Mahipal (995-1043) of the Pala dynasty restored the empire and repaired the Sompur monastery. But after the death of Mahipala and his son Nayapal, the decline of the Pala dynasty began again. On this occasion, a native Kaivarta feudal lord named Chedi Raj Karna, Cholaraj Rajendra and Dibbo of Central India invaded the Barind land one after another. The mention of the destruction of the Paharpur temple and monastery at Nalanda is probably an attack of this period. In the 11th century, Rampal of the Pala dynasty restored the kingdom of the heart. Bengal was conquered by the Sena kings from the Deccan in the 12th century. Somapura lost royal patronage to them. At this time the fall of Sompur began for the last time. At the beginning of the 13th century, Ikhtiyaruddin Muhammad-bin-Bakhtiyar Khilji invaded Bengal and occupied almost all of North Bengal. Probably due to the anti-idol attitude of these Muslim rulers, these Buddhist monasteries and temples were completely destroyed. The land-plan of the Buddhist monastery is quadrangular. The north and south sides are 263.8 m each and the east and west sides are 264.15 m. It was surrounded by wide boundary walls. There were small rooms lined up on the inside along the boundary walls. There are 45 rooms on the north side and 44 rooms on the other three sides. Three floors of these rooms have been discovered. Thick suraki on the bricks laid on each floor (Original)

Somapura Mahavihara, the Great Monastery evidences the rise of Maharaja Buddhism in Bengal from the 7 th century onwards. It became a renowned centre of Buddhist religion and culture during the royal Patronage of Pala Dynasty and was a renowned intellectual centre until the 17 th century.

This place is a proper combination of culture, history, art, and archaeology. This is one of the very few world heritage sites in Bangladesh. Ticket cost is cheap, well decorated and planned site management, clean and ecotourism management system build this historical site unique. It's also a good source of experience in the past and to imagine the socioeconomic conditions back at that time.

one of the most ancient and significant archaeological site in Bangladesh. This place were used as educational institution along with residential places for Buddhist scholars earlier in Buddhist era. Very splendid and mind blowing architectural structure with precise geometric shape and very sophisticated building mechanism has made it one of the most prominent historical site. It tells the unknown civilisation and cultures of old Bengals, the life story of ancient Buddhist monks and sages and it will certainly remind the vast knowledge cultures of our destroyed civilisation.

(Translated by Google) Paharpur Buddhist Monastery or Sompur Vihara or Sompur Maha Vihara is an ancient Buddhist monastery now in ruins. Shri Dharmapala Dev (61-621), the second king of the Pala dynasty, was building this monastery in the late eighth or ninth century. Sir Alexander Cunningham discovered this huge structure in 179 AD. A number of monasteries grew up during the Pāla period in ancient India in the eastern regions of the Indian subcontinent, comprising Bengal and Magadha. According to Tibetan sources, five great Mahaviharas (universities) stood out: Vikramashila, the premier university of the era; Nalanda, past its prime but still illustrious; Somapura Mahavihara; Odantapurā; and Jaggadala. The mahaviharas formed a network; "all of them were under state supervision" and there existed "a system of co-ordination among them ... it seems from the evidence that the different seats of Buddhist learning that functioned in eastern India under the Pāla were regarded together as forming a network, an interlinked group of institutions," and it was common for great scholars to move easily from position to position among them. Xuanzang of China was a noted scholar who resided at the Somapura Mahavihara (the largest university in ancient India), and Atisa traveled from Bengal to Tibet to preach Buddhism. The earliest form of the Bengali language began to the emerge during the eighth century. The excavation at Paharpur, and the finding of seals bearing the inscription Shri-Somapure-Shri-Dharmapaladeva-Mahavihariyarya-bhiksu-sangghasya, has identified the Somapura Mahavihara as built by the second Pala king Dharmapala (circa 781–821) of Pāla Dynasty.Tibetan sources, including Tibetan translations of Dharmakayavidhi and Madhyamaka Ratnapradipa, Taranatha's history and Pag-Sam-Jon-Zang, mention that Dharmapala's successor Devapala (circa 810–850) built it after his conquest of Varendra. The Paharpur pillar inscription bears the mention of 5th regnal year of Devapala's successor Mahendrapala (circa 850–854) along with the name of Bhiksu Ajayagarbha. Taranatha's Pag Sam Jon Zang records that the monastery was repaired during the reign of Mahipala (circa 995–1043 AD). The Nalanda inscription of Vipulashrimitra records that the monastery was destroyed by fire, which also killed Vipulashrimitra's ancestor Karunashrimitra, during a conquest by the Vanga army in the 11th century. Over time Atisha's spiritual preceptor, Ratnakara Shanti, served as a sthavira of the vihara, Mahapanditacharya Bodhibhadra served as a resident monk, and other scholars spent part of their lives at the monastery, including Kalamahapada, Viryendra and Karunashrimitra. Many Tibetan monks visited the Somapura between the 9th and 12th centuries. During the rule of the Sena dynasty, known as Karnatadeshatagata Brahmaksatriya, in the second half of the 12th century the vihara started to decline for the last time. One scholar writes, "The ruins of the temple and monasteries at Pāhāpur do not bear any evident marks of large-scale destruction. The downfall of the establishment, by desertion or destruction, must have been sometime in the midst of the widespread unrest and displacement of population consequent on the Muslim invasion." A copperplate dated to 159 Gupta Era (479 AD) discovered in 1927 in the northeast corner of the monastery, mentions donation of a Brahmin couple to Jain Acharya Guhanandi of Pancha-stupa Nikayaat Vata Gohli, identifiable as the neighbouring village of Goalapara

A number of monasteries grew up during the Pāla period in ancient India in the eastern regions of the Indian subcontinent, comprising Bengal and Magadha. According to Tibetan sources, five great Mahaviharas (universities) stood out: Vikramashila, the premier university of the era; Nalanda, past its prime but still illustrious; Somapura Mahavihara; Odantapurā; and Jaggadala.[2] The mahaviharas formed a network; "all of them were under state supervision" and there existed "a system of co-ordination among them ... it seems from the evidence that the different seats of Buddhist learning that functioned in eastern India under the Pāla were regarded together as forming a network, an interlinked group of institutions," and it was common for great scholars to move easily from position to position among them.[3] Atisa, who resided at the Somapura Mahavihara (the largest university in ancient India at that time), traveled from Bengal to Tibet to preach Buddhism. The earliest form of the Bengali language began to the emerge during the eighth century. The excavation at Paharpur, and the finding of seals bearing the inscription Shri-Somapure-Shri-Dharmapaladeva-Mahavihariyarya-bhiksu-sangghasya, has identified the Somapura Mahavihara as built by the second Pala king Dharmapala (circa 781–821) of Pāla Dynasty.[4] Tibetan sources, including Tibetan translations of Dharmakayavidhi and Madhyamaka Ratnapradipa, Taranatha's history and Pag-Sam-Jon-Zang, mention that Dharmapala's successor Devapala (circa 810–850) built it after his conquest of Varendra.[4] The Paharpur pillar inscription bears the mention of 5th regnal year of Devapala's successor Mahendrapala (circa 850–854) along with the name of Bhiksu Ajayagarbha.[4] Taranatha's Pag Sam Jon Zang records that the monastery was repaired during the reign of Mahipala (circa 995–1043 AD).[4] Jatvarma of Varman dynasty attacked Varendra in 11th century with hostility towards Kaivarta king Divya and Buddhism. Though the Kaivarta regime did not seem to suffer any loss, a part of the Mahavihara was destroyed by fire set by Jatvarma's army.[5] Over time Atisha's spiritual preceptor, Ratnakara Shanti, served as a sthavira of the vihara, Mahapanditacharya Bodhibhadra served as a resident monk, and other scholars spent part of their lives at the monastery, including Kalamahapada, Viryendra and Karunashrimitra.[4] Many Tibetan monks visited the Somapura between the 9th and 12th centuries.[4] During the rule of the Sena dynasty in the second half of the 12th century the vihara started to decline for the last time.[4] One scholar writes, "The ruins of the temple and monasteries at Pāhāpur do not bear any evident marks of large-scale destruction. The downfall of the establishment, by desertion or destruction, must have been sometime in the midst of the widespread unrest and displacement of population consequent on the Muslim invasion."[6] A copperplate dated to 159 Gupta Era (479 AD) discovered in 1927 in the northeast corner of the monastery, mentions donation of a Brahmin couple to Jain Acharya Guhanandi of Pancha-stupa Nikaya[7] at Vata Gohli, identifiable as the neighbouring village of Goalapara.[8]
