Mama Root was by far one of the best places I've stayed at in a long time (and I've traveled a lot)! To begin with, I loved the calm of the hotel and the entire fisher village of Kizimkazi. So if your objective is to avoid busyness, noise and tourist masses, Mama Root is your place to go! The beach right at the doorstep is paradisiac. The food is delicious and prepared with so much attention to detail, especially the dinners - by far the best food I've had not only in Zanzibar but overall Tanzania! But most importantly, the owners Olivia & Zuberi are the kindest people ever, offering help and advice with anything a guest might ask for, creating an atmosphere of "hotel meets home". Deeply grateful for my (extended) stay and 100% recommending Mama Root!

Very quiet as promised. Kizimkaze is very small and quiet, there's really nothing to do - which might be good or bad, depending on what you expect. If you want it quiet, it's good. But in the morning from around 4 the fishermen are starting their boats, that was a bit noisy but no problem for me. Mama Root put a lot of effort to offer a place of comfort and chill. WIFI works well until 0800, but thats for whole Sansibar as then all tourists start to use Internet and it gets really slow. Dinner costs 10-11$ and is very good. Breakfast is also very good but small - when I'm in holiday I like a big breakfast and then only dinner, but here I also had to eat for lunch. Self made fruit juice is extremely great, all Mama Root people are very helpful. I also made a dolphin tour with a local guide "Mokka", who is just on the exit to the street of Mama Root, the boat for me alone cost 25$, I can highly recommend Mokka, he's a nice guy. If you ever have a question just ask for help, all people will help out.

Booked three nights, ended up staying two weeks. The food is spectacular and the service is so great. The menu changes daily, except for one of the lunch options, the Tropical Smile. Whatever you do, don’t miss it. The owner is wonderfully friendly and very keen on that you have everything you might need. She’ll help you book any activity you’re looking to experience, even though the lounge area is so relaxing you might very well stay there for days. The views are to die for and the location feels very local if you decide to wander around the community. The beers are cold and the juices are on demand. An absolute favourite!

Wow! Mama root made our entire trip to Zanzibar ten times better! Go here for complete relaxation, great food and fantastic nature. Small menu that changes daily so that you’ll get the best catch of the day every day and a lot of local flavours. We recommend it strongly - never felt more at home and at ease at a hotel before. The hospitality is better than at any five star hotel. Thank you Oliwia!

Visit your mum, as if mum would live on Zanzibar. That's the atmosphere you will find here. The place is super cozy, the stuff is great and the owner Olivia with her husband wil try everything to make you feel welcome. We only had to days at this location but really enjoyed it a lot.

Our stay at Mama Root was perfect! Very cosy and peaceful atmosphere. The room was very clean, spacious and beautifully decorated. From our room, we enjoyed the stunning ocean view and the beach was just a door step away. Food was spectacular and fresh. We got to try traditional dishes that were very tasty! The owners were very helpful and friendly! Our stay was very positive and full of beautiful memories. We hope to visit again. Highly recommend this place!

Mama Root is the perfect getaway in Zanzibar. The property is right on one of the most gorgeous and less touristy beaches, the hotel is small and intimate, the included breakfast is great (lots of fresh fruits fruits and your choice of eggs or pancakes), and the owners and staff are amazing and always checking in to make sure all your needs are met. This place is truly an amazing find. No notes.

My fiance and I had the most magical week at Mama Root. Olivia and Zube took so well care of us and made us feel like family. We've traveled quite a lot but no other place compares to Mama Root and we hope to be able to come back. The rooms and hotel are beautiful with many nice spots to relax and recharge. When traveling food is very important to us and their cooking was by far the best food we had during our three weeks in Tanzania. Having a sunset dinner at their restaurant is what life is about. Kizimkaze city in itself is very quiet, but there are some good restaurants and the possibility to buy some basic groceries. That being said we were happy to stay in Kizimkaze over the more touristic cities and beaches, which we still discovered through day trips.

In a city without major activities, Mama Roots allows you to cut off and let go of the pressure of everyday life. This place bewitches you with its soothing aura. The view is magnificent, the place is quiet and intimate. Mama Roots and Papa Roots will take great care and make this place a friendly place. There is a bed and breakfast atmosphere. Everything is homemade, from the decoration to the cooking, which gives this place even more charm. Thank you again for your welcome and good luck!

Faboules hosts and love in every detail Our stay was perfect! we stayed for three nights and enjoyed every moment. Mama Root and Papa Root are super hosts, welcoming and fill their place with warmth an attention to detail. Kizimkazi is a small village, you can expect quite moments and a relaxing time. The room is cozy. During your stay you need nothing to do, everything is taken care of. Great breakfast with fantastic coffee. Yeah you have to try that one. Dinner is awesome. You have more or less the choice of one dish, either with meat, vegetarian or seafood.….. even if you don't like seafood, take it, you will enjoy. After dinner you can sit by the open fireplace have a drink and go happy to bed.

We can recommend this accommodation without restrictions. The room was great and was cleaned daily. The owner was very helpful and always supported us. We also had lunch and dinner in the complex. The drink prices are also fair. A clear recommendation. We will definitely come back.
