Heian Jingu, a group of buildings completed in 1985 in Okazaki, which is five-eighths the size of the original Chodoin as the centerpiece of the National Industrial Exhibition. Unfortunately lost nine buildings due to putting fire, but the main hall and the inner hall of worship were in 1979 reconstructed with donations from all over the country. The site area is about 16 acre, and the Japanese Garden occupies half of it. The height of the large Torii is 22.4m. Almost of the tourist for Kyoto never miss this place without exception.

Heian Shrine was built on the occasion of the 1100th anniversary of the capitals foundation of Kyoto. The shrine is dedicated to the spirits of the first and last emperors. lt is one of the must-see in Kyoto. You will pass a gigantic Torii, pass by the museums, then you will see a very attractive building with a wonderful garden. Better you go there early and enjoy whole day since the garden quite big has artificial pools. lf you are a nature lover, you will love it.

Nice shrine but open gravel areas take away from the beauty slightly compared to other more compact shrines. The gardens have a fee to enter which is annoying. The shrine buildings are as stunning as always, just not the best overall shrine in Kyoto I’d say.

This is a absolute must see Temple in Kyoto. The buildings of the Heian Shrine are a little worn down, however that adds to the charm of this place and also shows just how old these magnificent buildings really are. The best part of this Shrine are the massively sprawling gardens within. 30,000 square meters of space showcase traditional Japanese style gardens that are absolutely breathtaking. It costs ¥600 per adult to enter the garden area, this is an absolutely amazing deal and something that should not be passed up. While the Shrine may be a little out of the way in terms of getting to it by a train, it is a pleasant walk from the nearest station and there are many shops along the way. Pictures alone do not do this Shrine justice, you must visit this beautiful monument and garden.

Unlike many other historic sites in Kyoto, I found this shrine not crowded by tourists. This offers a soothing and peaceful atmosphere. It is unique with a central big shrine surrounded by a huge courtyard.

Super cool area to explore. It's free to enter and look around. I do recommend going into the garden area and looking around there, too. It's less crowded due to having to pay around 500-600¥ to enter, so it's very peaceful. The garden area also has the coolest bridge, which is a great spot for pictures, and you can feed the turtules and fish there, too. Overall, this is a place you have to see in Kyoto.

Heian-jingū Shrine in Kyoto is a captivating blend of history and serenity. The sprawling vermilion torii gate marks the entrance to a realm where time seems to stand still. The architecture, a replica of the original Imperial Palace, is awe-inspiring, reflecting the Heian period's grandeur. Strolling through the vast gardens, each step unveils meticulous landscaping and tranquil ponds that evoke a profound sense of peace. The shrine's iconic main gate, Ōtenmon, commands attention with its intricate details, while the main hall, Daigokuden, is a testament to architectural splendor. The vibrant autumn foliage transforms the surroundings into a kaleidoscope of colors, adding a poetic touch to the already enchanting ambiance. Heian-jingū isn't just a visual feast; it's a spiritual sanctuary. Visitors can partake in ritual activities, fostering a deep connection to the Shinto traditions. The tranquility within the shrine offers respite from the bustling city outside, making it a haven for contemplation and introspection. Whether you're a history enthusiast, nature lover, or seeker of spiritual solace, Heian-jingū Shrine beckons with open arms. It's a place where the essence of Kyoto's rich cultural tapestry unfolds, leaving an indelible imprint on every visitor. 🍃🏰 #HeianJingu #KyotoExperience

This temple is nestled within a serene park that invites visitors for a stroll at the cost of 600 yen. The park showcases a beautiful Japanese-style design, offering a tranquil and relaxing atmosphere. A charming small lake hosts various fish, including carp, and for a small fee of 50 yen, visitors can enjoy feeding them. Adorning a bridge over the lake are paper ornaments holding the hopes and prayers of those who visit the temple. One can also acquire a unique souvenir—a retro, old-fashioned machine allows you to carve names or inscribe messages, be it your own name, your partner's, or anything else, adding an extra nostalgic touch to the experience. They also so handwritten goushin, so make sure to grab one.

Beautifully garden and for 600 yen is totally worth it. You have to enter through the left side of the temple and walk all the way across the garden. You can buy fish food for 50 yen on the bridge and feed the very large fishes. But the view is breathtaking.

What a wonderful surprise! The grounds were absolutely beautiful and well worth wandering around. We also opted to walk through the garden space which was 600 yen per person. I would highly recommend it as the scenery was lovely and well worth the money. Very peaceful space! Be sure to allow yourself at least one hour to really see the area if you're also planning on walking through the gardens.

Not the biggest shrine that I visited by terms of shrine size but this is probably one of the biggest by terms of lot size. Visitors would surely love the fact that it's free to visit the shrine (meaning no entrance fee like most of the famous places in Kyoto) however, keep in mind that the garden area requires you to pay an entrance fee.

📿🛐 Very beautiful shrine just 10-18 mins walkign north from yasaka or kiyomizu. ✅Great to complement the visit of the massive door down the street ✅Besutiful shrines 🆓💴 FREE to visit (one of the few along with Chiion, and that one close to Kyoto Station) 🆗💴 If you want to visit the garden it costs around 500yen. They seem really beautiful although we were in a rush and had to skip it

One of the better shrines to visit. It's free, the views are great and you have a lot of room to wander around. It can be quite dusty due to the gravel on the ground. The shrine is well maintained and has a beautiful red colour. You can make some awesome pictures with the trees in the foreground if you like. The garden which can be entered in the west side of the premises, has an entrance fee of ¥400-600 (not sure about the exact amount). If you think like, nahh, I have seen enough gardens. Again, this one is looking good with beautiful views and a passage over the water. Also, there is an old tram located in the garden itself. Something I haven't seen before. There are a few benches if you like to take some rest, different from the popular gardens where you are stuck to a mandatory walking direction without any places to sit down.

I went to visit Heian during a raining day and it was magical. I suggest to visit the garden either on a raining day or when it is not too bright, because the green in the garden will almost feel palpable. The images of garden will linger in your soul for many days, so take your time and listen to the sounds.

A popular shrine loved by the locals with spacious front. Entrance to the garden will require entrance fee. Too bad didn't give it a try due to closing time is too near. Very close to the yasaka shrine and Zion district. Can couple together for a day trip.

A temple with a park around it. You can walk around the calming park for 600 yen. The park is designed in the Japanese style. It is very relaxing and calming. There is a small lake with carps and other fish in it. You can feed the fishes by paying 50 yen for the fish food. There is a bridge across the small lake with paper ornaments containing hope and pray of people visiting the temple. You can get the unique souvenir where you carve your name, your spouse or gf/bf or you can write anything. The machine looks retro and old so it gives an added bonus point.

The dominating landmark in the area is the enormous red Tori gate just before the shrine. It is obscenely big and beautiful to look at from different angles. It shocked me in the way only super famous monuments like the leaning tower of Pisa have. The shrine itself is historically, culturally, and religiously important. It was built in the late 19th century during the Meiji era , though it commemorates the 1100th year of Kyoto's founding , and enshrines both the first and last Kyoto-based emperors: Emperor Kammu (737-806) and Emperor Komei (1831-1867).

Heian Shrine is one of the most colorful Shrines I have visited in Kyoto. There are lots of vendors selling all sorts of stuff in front of the corridor, not sure if it's a weekend thing only. There are also a few gardens which are much bigger places to explore, but you have to pay a small fee separately (around 600 Yen)to enter. In my opinion l, it is well worth the money.

This is one of the big impressive shrines in Kyoto with its signature red torri as well as other buildings painted in bright red too. Nice view from within the shrine towards the mountains. Big wide garden can be visited against a fee and worth it especially in spring and autumn. Good starting point to walk to Gion. Early morning not yet very crowded.

I went here with my Japanese friends. It was very quick visit as it soo hot that day. I amaze with the tori gate by the entrance. Soo tall and big. It is huge area to explore. May is hot day to visit, so I suggest to prepare umbrellas if you want to go full visit of this Shrine. The entrance building look beautiful. Even though temple I visit look like the same, but I like this Heian Shrine as the trees around the temple give better view. I might cone back to this place to explore all area. Dint forget to bring sun glasses and hat or umbrella as you may need it. Better to come by public transport as my friend took forever to get car park and at the end he need to wait in the car as it not allowed to park.

(Translated by Google) On April 1, 1895 (Meiji 28), a partial restoration of the Heian palace at the time of the transfer of capital to Heiankyo was planned as the centerpiece of the National Industrial Exhibition held in Kyoto to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of the transfer of capital to Heian. Initially, it was planned that Suzakumon would be located in Sembon Marutamachi, where the Heian Palace was actually located, but due to the failure to acquire the land, a groundbreaking ceremony was held on September 3, 1893 (Meiji 26). It was restored to Okazaki, a suburb, on a scale of five-eighths of the actual size. Heian Jingu is famous for its "cherry blossoms," "Otorii," and "gardens." This shrine can be easily located from the far distance by its giant red-orange colored gate. The whole structures within this shrine are painted red-orange, adding brightness to the shrine and I really like this glowing color. After entering the shrine, there is a spacious ground where we can walk to the main Shrine. Unfortunately, by the time I reach there, the main shrine was already closed but I enjoyed walking around and capturing photos. I also admired its beautiful architectural designs of the temples.

The entrance to the temple is elegant with a majestic 24 m high Torii gate. We spent many hours wandering around the Shrine garden and enjoyed the peaceful and serene environment a lot. Relatively minimal shrine. I mean there's not much to do in the main area. All the stuff to do is through a pay-gate on the outer sides of the shrine. I have nothing against the price, but since I already went to something similar in the same day, it was not worth to pay twice to basically see the same thing. There are also some traditional fountains where there's a main water source and you use cup-ladles to pour it in your hands.

The pillars are vermilion and the roof is covered with rare blue tiles (hekigawara, green glazed roof tiles). Want entirely sure what to expect, but this has become my favourite shrine in Japan of all the shrines I've visited thus far. The garden was beautiful with lots of scenery and some wildlife (carps, other fish, turtles, some waterfowl), there was an expo with ikebana (flower arrangement), and even a musical performance in the main square!

Heian Shrine is a fantastic area for a visit when in Kyoto. The shrine and especially the garden are wonderfully kept and a stroll through it are worth it at any time. Be sure to go through all areas of the garden and to also explore the food options in this area of town.

(Translated by Google) It was built in the Meiji era, and I felt that it had a great influence at that time because of the majestic shrine building and the strong sense of scale on the vast site. I am very interested in what kind of impressions the people who visited Heian Jingu at the time of its construction had. At least I was impressed. When I was on a school trip, I didn't think that the impression would change so much when I came to the time when I became an adult and there were few people, leaving only a miscellaneous image. A must-visit place in the ancient capital of KYOTO, a very beautiful shrine, bright orange red in the sun... it can take an entire day to visit this vast area, lots of trees and lakes...surely you will feel really peaceful.

This bright colored shrine has a really huge grounds to explore. There is also an event hall. At first I was reluctant enough to visit the shrine's garden, which has an entrance fee (shrine complex is free to enter and pay your respect to) and it was almost closing time since I arrived around 3 pm. However when I finally had mustered up a decision to check out the ticket price, turns out that day was free of charge. lucky! Taking a stroll round the garden was the highlight of my visit, they have lots of different plants and trees, and also a lake with a resting bridge just before you exit the garden.

You're taken aback by the imposing presence of the gate and the large expanse of land the moment you approach the Heian Shrine. Stunning shrine with incredible prayer trees which make for great photo opportunities. There’s also beautifully manicured pine trees and just next door is the most beautiful garden in the whole of Kyoto - stunning with amazing water Lillies and irises. It’s also not as busy as the shrine so you can have a relaxing break from the masses of people

Beautiful shrine complex with a lot of open space and well-kept buildings. No crowds when we visited which allowed the kids to explore the grounds while the adults admired the buildings. Be sure to check out the four statues representing the four cardinal directions (blue dragon - East; white tiger - West; black turtle - North; and I can’t remember - South).

I went there for the light show in Dec and it was stunning. They made use of the traditional building and Japanese garden and combined it with beautiful light effects. The number of visitors were not a lot which I had a very quiet and peaceful time during my visit. Highly recommended if they arrange the event again. Even without the event, it will be a nice place to spend an hour or two to look at the nicely designed garden.

A wonderful shrine to visit, it’s absolutely massive and painted in a color of red that jumps out. The Tori gates leading to it are tremendously large, possibly bigger than those in the Meiji Shrine in Tokyo. The shrine itself is peaceful and requires no admission fee. It’s a bit difficult to get to though, with the walk from Higashiyama station quite far (and not many buses seem to have their routes nearby). There’s also a lack of convenience stores aside from a single 7/11. Despite being in Kyoto, it’s far from everything. Odd.

  • 4/5 Gerd T. 11 months ago on Google
The shrine itself is moderately interesting. Bright red colours and a huge courtyard. Much more fascinating though, is the beautifully designed Japanese garden with a big pond and a wooden bridge crossing the pond. Entrance fee a moderate 600 ¥

The last time i had visited Heian Shrine was in 1984 during a school excursion. I remembered the long walk from the torii gate, the pebbly courtyard, the vast expanse. And the garden, the fauna, the flora! Worth a meandering walk in the dappled sunlight.

A biggest shrine I have ever visited so far. Unlike other shrine which is relatively small, this shrine has it huge filed covered with the white gravels. Also, here you can pray to the God inside the main building. The decoration was very nice with the combination between green and brick red. The place is easy to reach and no entrance fee needed. Sometime, in front of the shrine, you can find a flea market.

Massive Shrine and courtyard. A few massive steps to enter and second small set halfway to shrine, and third set to enter shrine. otherwise flat but not very wheelchair accessible. Free to enter. No photos or videos allowed in the actual shrine. Security present to enforce rules. 500¥ for stamp, 300¥ for separate sheet of paper if your book is too small. No English speakers. Great area to walk around, so many shrines, temples, gardens and museums to visit.
