We were trying to find something to do before we headed to the FT Myers airport for a late flight today and I found this historic site on Google Maps. The Thomas Edison and Henry Ford winter home museum was the PERFECT last day for our trip to Florida! CHET WAS OUR GUIDE, he was super knowledgeable and very informative. The total tour took about 75 minutes but it was a beautiful day and we moved from place to place so he kept our attention! For a moment we dreamt away and realized we were standing in the same spots as some of the all time greatest inventors in the world and that was fantastic!! The fact that Thomas Edison and Henry Ford were best friends was the best of all the fun facts! As a BIG bonus the trees are absolutely breathtaking! Pack a lunch and just sit in the gardens and take it all in! Completely unforgettable and highly recommendable!!

Came here on the first day that they celebrated their holiday nights special event. Booked the guided tour and our tour guide did a fantastic job explaining all the information. It’s a very expansive estate at the same time the guide didn’t waste any time and we were able to finish the tour after an hour without issues. It is absolutely beautifully decorated and they aren’t normally open this late but it’s beautiful to see all the holiday lights being set up. It’s quite a unique experience. They also had some food vendors which we partook in a few treats since it was getting late and it was a replacement for dinner. Recommend buying guided tour tickets early as they do sell out pretty quickly.

Well maintained residency, location is near the water with great view. The parking is free. If you buy tickets online, you need to exchange them to waist bands at ticket office first. It is better to visit the museum first because it has so many first hand real things to see and read. Also the garden and the park adjacent to the ticket office are great, many nursery items for sale. Spent about 2.5 hrs today but could do more especially at the museum.

I was in town for another event but spent the rest of the day here touring the grounds and museum. I absolutely enjoyed my visit. Staff was very friendly and helpful. They had a mini presentation on how to work the old phonograph devices that I enjoyed listening to. There's lots of small little walking trails on the grounds including one by the river that is very nice. You can't get lost and there are benches to sit everywhere. I enjoyed using the app to tell me about certain spots. I'm not much of a plant person but they have plants everywhere here. Some very pretty. I am a history nerd and this is a great place if you like history. I learned a lot.

Wonderful visit. The guided tour is recommended if you want to ask questions or learn more in depth knowledge if the premises and their occupants. Didn't realize that the Edisons and Fords were good friends. Great gift shop with a number of books to choose from, great kids toys and handmade art pieces.

This is one of my favorites because they had mangoes for sale. Make sure to go to the palm tree line street to access the entrance. It cost $20/person or get an annual pass, $100/year/family of 6. There is a nursery with all sorts of plants for sale, the museum, and Edison's lab adjacent to the ticket office. You will have to cross the street to visit the estate and enjoy the beautiful grounds. It's about 13 acres so make sure to wear comfortable shoes, and bring water. The estate is in pristine condition and well preserved. Almost everything on display is the original. I really love the historical perspective on the cars and Ford's relationship with Edison. The grounds are strewn will all sorts fruit trees, exotic plants, and some Florida natives. Of course, the variety of mangoes 🥭 are planted all over the property. There's also a restaurant connected to the property which can be accessed on the Northwest side. This was an awesome experience. I highly recommend bringing the kids. BTW, the plant whisperer/caretaker (young man with dreds driving around the property) is awesome. I don't recall his name. All in all, great place to learn some history, and enjoy a beautiful garden. Have fun!

We've lived in Fort Myers for a few years, yet this was the first time we were willing to dish out $30 to visit this place. We picked a good time, because the place is very beautiful when covered in Christmas lights. The Christmas trees decorated by local classrooms were particularly nice. The history and exhibits at the estate were interesting, but I'm not convinced worth the $30 entrance fee by themselves.

On a recent first visit to Ft. Myers, I decided to check out this amazing place on the river. I never knew that Henry Ford and Thomas Edison were next door neighbors in their winter homes! Both men are legendary American icons. The grounds of the estate are gorgeous. Throughout the tour there were volunteers to explain and demonstrate things. I particularly liked Edison's office and home. They have a fantastic museum with an original model T. There is ample parking and the admission fee was reasonable. This is a must see!

The Edison and Ford Estates was so nice. It is well maintained and there is plenty to look at. They have nice signage and even an App you can use to hear information about different locations. It was a wonderful jump back in time for a few hours. The gift shops offer cute souvenirs and cold beverages on a warm day. The botanical gardens and plant shop were beautiful!

The Edison & Ford Winter Estates are well worth the price. The Tour Guide was very pleasant, well-spoken and highly informative regarding all aspects of this Historic, fascinating, beautiful place. Being located off McGregor Boulevard in Fort Myers, FL, gives us the chance to visit as often as we wish, since we purchased an Annual Membership, at a very fair price. The enormous variety of trees and plants adds to the beauty as one walks through the well-maintained horticulture, being accompanied by a multitude of Precious Butterflies. We are looking forward to our next exciting visit, so we can learn more about the lives of these two brilliant men and perhaps, spend some relaxing time on the bench that overlooks the beautiful, calming Caloosahatchee River. Watching a Pelican conduct multiple dives for an afternoon meal was very entertaining. Purchasing an Annual Membership allows adults to bring their grandchildren (under 18 years of age) with them, at no additional cost. There is so much more to see; I just didn't take as many pictures as I wanted to. I am looking forward to our next visit.

Such a beautiful place to visit. There is a lot of fascinating and interesting information to read and learn as you explore the estate. The place is well maintained and really feels like you are back in time. We got lucky with the weather not being too hot but it is mostly outdoors and can get really hot under the Florida sun. We enjoyed sitting by the water and just relaxing.

Beautiful estates. A lot of education to be had. It is a bit pricey for admission but if love history it was well worth it. 4 Stars due to staff being rude and not helpful when questions were asked. Felt as though I was imposing on her even though this was her job to take my money/tickets, etc.. It can get warm so I suggest to do estates first so can cool off with museums last since they have ac.

Well worth the stop. It's always fun to visit places where wealthy industrialists from the 19th century vacationed. Both men were true pioneers from 1880s through their deaths in the 1930's and 1940's . Take your time use the app and do a self guided tour. It really well done.

This is definitely a must see place when you are in Fort Mayers. Just imagine that two icons of the past century, Edison and Ford, owned this residence together! Edison called it it’s “Eden”. We came during Christmas lights 🎄 I don’t think it’s worth the $20 ticket price. However, we had a very nice time strolling around the residence and learning how Edison and Ford lived in their summer retreat. The most interesting part for me is to see how they lived back then. And how technically advanced, for the time, Edison build the estate.

Beautiful place, really enjoyed our afternoon here. Great little museum with lots of antiques. But my favorite part was the gardens, I could spend all day just people watching on a bench while enjoying the gardens. This place is truly a hidden gem!

Additionally, they offer two engaging activities for people of all ages, making it a delightful experience. The workers were extremely friendly, adding to the overall enjoyment. Edison & Ford Winter Estates is one of my favorite places to visit - any time but especially at Christmas! Not only is the museum fascinating and informative there is nothing quite like getting to see Edison's actual lab or Ford and Edison's winter homes. It truly is a glimpse into the past and personal lives of these men and their families. The grounds are just lovely as well. And if you come at Christmas in the evening for the holiday light tour...it's magical! The homes are decorated so beautifully for Christmas. And all the Christmas lights make the homes even more stunning! If you love history, old homes, architecture, or just that old Florida feel - this is a must see in my opinion.

Marvelous museum. The grounds are a sight to behold, with many mature exotics. There is something flowering year round There is a large area where they can setup tents for events, as was happening while we were there. The museum is fabulous and alone worth the price Of admission. It leads to the rubber laboratory which is also interesting, but needs someone there to explain what you are looking at. The only disappointment was not being able to go IN the homes. You can stand outside and look in, but that is not the same. There were plenty of areas that could have had a path through the various rooms. If it wasn't for this, I would have given it a five. Kids, 6-12 will especially like the museum

Our visit to these beautifully manicured and maintained grounds along the Caloosahatchee River was on Friday, April 1st. It was not crowded and we had no wait. There’s a free audio/photo guided tour available to download to your smartphone. It was quite helpful with navigating the Estate and assured we didn’t miss anything. There are many options available for the self guided tour that will please all ages including a scavenger hunt. I would suggest bringing headphones so as not to disturb other visitors. A plus is the tour is available after you leave so you will be able to re visit your trip. Easy to navigate. The grounds are wheelchair accessible but not all porches. It is set up so you can view the interior of the homes from the porches. You could easily spend a half day or more not only viewing the homes but also walking the grounds and watching the birds and butterflies. An extremely wide variety of plants and trees for your viewing pleasure. Be sure to visit the museum and check out Edison’s laboratory. On ground private events are also available at the Ford Edison Winter Estates. Ample parking, restrooms, and snacks are available. Bring your camera, water and insect repellent. Worth the price of admission.

Fun experience with the family! Please note that if you are going on a reciprocal membership please be sure all reciprocal members names are on cards or you need to pay for those not named. Gardens were well maintained with really interesting specimens. I had no idea the extent that Edison and his assistants experimented with plants. Plan for the weather as most of the exhibits are outside. Gardens close in thunder alerts. You cannot walk through houses, but they have opened all the doorways to see in many of the rooms. Highlight of the gardens is the self guided audio tour. Short, entertaining, informational and well done! Museum is quite interesting and air conditioned :)

Wonderful place to spend couple of hours walking around and learning about Edison and Ford, their friendship and life. Very educational. You can take a guided tour or you can download free app and listen to description at every numbered stop. We bought Edison’s biography Edison by Edmund Morris at the little gift store by the Ford’s house (the one that sells ice cream) and my husband started reading it right away. Loved the other gift store across the street as well. They sell so many plants. We also got a patch to sew on my travel bag :-)

My wife and I really enjoyed this museum and grounds. The cost was $25/person. I downloaded the Edison app and went through a self guide tour. The app was impressive, easy to use and made the tour that much better. Considering Henry Ford and Thomas Edison were two of the biggest innovators in US history, it was a wonderful exhibit.

Amazing place! Definitely worth a trip even if it is to simply view this exotic locale. The plants for sale are impeccable, and they have some pots for sale as well. The museum tour is worth the time if you have it. Learned so much about the area that I had no idea about before! Informative and fun for most ages, but especially cool for locals who want to know just a little bit more about our rich Florida history. Recommended highly!

It was beautiful. However, the mask mandate is terrible. I went with my mom and she brought her face shield which she wears instead of regular masks because she has breathing issues. They did not care and told her she has to wear regular masks for others safety. She has her face covered and everybody else is wearing a mask. Shouldn't everyone else be fine, or do the masks not work then? What about her safety? Well whatever. We put on our masks and the museum smells hard of paint and tbh it was really bad. Even with my mask on which I have some issues myself with breathing in a mask. I can smell the paint regardless and I have a hard time breathing properly too with the mask. I'm getting sick and lightheaded, so I lowered it right below my nose a couple times just to breathe here and there but still covering most of my face and I got reprimanded for it and told to cover my nose at all times. I explained I had a hard time breathing and that I was only doing it every now and then to breathe for a little bit. They didn't care. And it upset me because we had to leave early and not finish the tour because of that. Needless to say I'm upset with them and their crazy restrictions. I have been to many places in Ft. Myers and I haven't seen any other places be that strict. I just want to give y'all a heads up. I will not be returning until their heavy mask restrictions are taken care of.

So much to see and so much history, great way to see into the way people lived 100+ years ago. The app is heavily recommended as you get voice narration for every stop on the estate. The museum was surprisingly big and filled with relics of edison and ford's lives. Well worth the money

I went to Edison and Ford Winter Estates during a trip to Fort Myers. I took a guided tour which was approximately $30. Our tour guide who called himself an historian, provided a lot of good insights regarding the lives of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford and kept us engaged during the entire tour. It was approximately 100 degrees outside that day but he managed to keep us in the shades most of the tour. You're not allowed to go inside the homes but you can peek through the doors/windows. After the tours which was approximately an hour and a half, I went back inside the museum to visit some of the exhibits of Edison and Ford. I also visited the grounds which are well maintained and beautiful. I could have spent a whole day there.

Gorgeous grounds .. fascinating friendship between Edison & Ford ..💡 🚗 Thoroughly enjoyed walking through the gardens & seeing inside the houses. Loved how we were able to take a self guided tour & see inside the homes. The houses 🏘 have 1/2 opened doors to allow for a wonderful view of the various areas of the inside of the homes. The gardens, houses, workshop & museums are meticulously kept. A very enjoyable experience & we learned a lot! Highly recommend!

We went for Holiday Nights and loved it! They did such an amazing job decorating for the holidays. We loved learning about the estates and the families who lived there. There were plenty of docents around to answer questions and they were very knowledgeable. The interpretive signs were also very helpful. We had a laugh over the house rules. "Don't kill the black snakes under the porch. They are there for a reason!" And "Don't tell us about Palm Beach. We don't care." There were many photo ops throughout the estates. The gift shops had really nice things from snacks to books to Christmas ornaments.

We did the self-guided tour. We downloaded the app, grabbed our earbuds and headed to the estates. It was a wonderful tour where we could wander at our own pace, read the historical signs along the path and listen to the audio. About 95% of the tourists complied by wearing masks. The landscape and homes were beautiful. The museum was also interesting and included in the tour as well as the lab. It was my first time to see a banyan tree in person; it was incredible!

On a visit in December to see family in Ft. Myers, Florida some years ago, we were treated to a complimentary visit to the historical Edison and Ford Winter Estates. The estates sit next to the Calooshatchee River. The winter homes are now a museum with a lot of history. My aunt was on the board of directors, and she wanted us to go on a tour. The weather was good, it wasn’t hot and the estates were decorated for the holidays. We toured the inside of the homes, decorated also for Christmas during that time period. It has a 21 acre botanical garden with star fruit trees growing in the front yard. Some of Henry Ford’s cars at the Ford Estate. In the back yard there are Banyan Trees, these trees are used for latex and have REALLY BIG TREE ROOTS. We saw Edison’s swimming pool that the guide said he never used. Thomas Edison’s wife Mina had a garden that’s named the Moonlight Garden, that has night blooming flowers and was meant to be enjoyed in the moonlight. The garden also has a reflection pool, to reflect the moon and stars. There was a replica of an Edison Bench in memory of my late uncle Fredrick Morgan, Sr. at the Edison Estate. If you’re in the area stop by the Edison and Ford Winter Estates. It was a very interesting and educational tour, that I am so glad my aunt provided us with an opportunity to visit. Thank you Aunt Melvin we love you, and it was greatly appreciated.

Highly recommended for visitors in the area. The place is unique due to the combined efforts of Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone searching for plans that can help in the growing need of rubber at that time. The lab is large and preserved the way it was when built. What makes this place special is the largest Banyan tree in front of it (largest in continental US and the second largest in the world). The gardens alone are worth the visit. There is a cute cafe in the back as well so you can spend some extra time enjoying the park and the surroundings just as the Edison and Ford family did back in the day.

Don’t let the price which may seem high shy you away from this gem of a destination in Fort Myers. There are plenty of places to stop and admire the view and the beautiful grounds without a lot of noise or heavy people traffic. I spent 30 minutes on a bench under coconut trees just listening to birds and the waves of the river splashing against the shore. The app is full of great facts and content to make the self tour fully immersive. The staff were all so pleasant and helpful.

We came on a Saturday evening for the Holiday Nights light show. It was such a cool experience. The houses had the top glass doors open. You could look into the rooms but could not enter. The gift shop was also open, and there were plants for purchase. The only thing we could not do was the museum as it had closed a couple hrs before we arrived. This is a family event, so bring the kids. The bathrooms were clean. There was music playing as well as snacks and drinks available for purchase. The Banyan trees are an amazing sight to see. The parking does fill up, but there is plenty of overflow parking available. I recommend to anyone looking to get into the holiday spirit.

will start with the bad, it's really over priced. The tickets are like $35 which is like going to Knott's berry farm and the cafe is priced like a theme park too. Now the good... Everything else. It's extremely high tech, clean, well taken care of and modern. There is an extremely well rounded variety of exhibits. Loved it!! You don't have to be a history fan to appreciate and enjoy this wonderful spot. What an amazing pair of men - the things they invented on their own and together - incredible. Very well-kept site, really interesting museum with so many exhibits and a documentary movie. Lovely gardens to walk, you can see both homes from their surrounding porches (you cannot go inside them but you can see very well from outside). Gift shop and flowers, plants for sale there also. Highly recommend for adults, I think kids would get bored too quick.

The last time I visited the Edison Estate, the Ford home was still in private hands. It has since been purchased by the city and is part of the tour. We got there kind of late in the afternoon so ended up not seeing everything out spending as much time on the exhibits as I would have liked. You really need around three hours to walk through at your own pace. There is a "guided" tour through the app that you have to download from Google or Apple depending on your device.

Took 4 kids and there was enough to keep them busy for several hours. We did have to visit several activities multiple times in order to stretch out the time in order to feel like we got our monies worth, but the kids did not mind and had a good time. I gave a 3 because it was pricey for a large family and I personally didnt like the large number of activities involving space simulators. The simulators seemed like just another computer game (only larger). I was bringing them to the imaginarium so the could use their imagination and unplug.

We ventured to the Estates not really knowing what to expect. We purchased tickets at the door. (We actually bought a membership so we could go back during Christmas time to see the lights.) This allows us to give our guests 20% if they want to buy tickets to join us in the future. We used the app to listen to the "tour" and it was very informative. We had a great day weatherwise. I do not recommend going when it is raining. It is mostly outside, other than the lab and the museum. These were their vacation homes, so it is on a smaller scale than I would imagine their primary homes were. Still, a great place to visit. We then went across the street to Pinchers, a seafood restaurant, on the water and ate outside on the patio. Discovered they have river cruises (office located on the lower level) at various times throughout the day. May check those out sometime.

  • 5/5 Kasey M. 2 years ago on Google
Fascinating place to learn a lot of Edison himself, his discoveries and inventions, his life and life in general in that time period, and a little bit about the history of Fort Myers and Lee County. The property is beautiful. They have done a great job since the non-profit took it over in 2006 from the city allowing them to have access to the funding necessary to keep the houses and ground well maintained. They even have the pool back up and running to its former glory. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. We were actually on a tour with two new hires because all their staff are required to take the tour and learn about where they work. The museum highlights both Edison and Ford’s lives and gives you a new perspective on their friendship. One great person inspiring another great person, they have such great stories. Plan to spend at least an hour in the main museum, I recommend doing this before your scheduled tour time. I also, recommend doing the in house or through the house tour, it is well worth it! Go ahead and buy a membership if you are able to come back at least one more time within the year, especially Christmas time for all the lights. Their membership has a lot of reciprocating museums as well so look it over and see if that benefits you as well. The in the homes tour takes 1-1/2 hours at least. And then there are more things to check out on your own after that. Like the Laboratory and other on site buildings. They have many Model Ts and early cars as well on site. Wear walking shoes, no heels. The grounds is not entirely paved but mostly. And for the in home tour you must wear little protective slip overs on your shoes so you dont damage the wooden floors. Mask was not required for guests. All staff were wearing a mask (Oct 2021) Bring your camera! You can take photos of everything. And the property has the best views of the River.

The museum can be organized better for a seamless flow to the exhibit. I found my myself having to backtrack a few times be fill in stops and grasp the story. The plants varieties around the grounds are incredible and how they fit into the industrialists' story is remarkable.

  • 5/5 Carol N. 2 years ago on Google
Great for all ages. The homes and gardens are very pretty with many unusual varieties of plants. The museum has so much interesting information and great exhibits of Edison's work and much about his friendship with Ford and other notables of the day. Nice interactive area for younger children if there are any in your party.

A great place to take a 3-hour break. They have guided tours and self-guided tours. The self-guided tours have follow-along references using your cell phone. Great for keeping your own pace. There were just as many children excited to see the Winter Estates as the adults. A few of my favorite highlights are in the images of the laboratory, the Ford, and the pier. At the end of your visit, cool down in the museum. And before you go, there is a seating area with some refreshing drinks in the shade. So neat to see what the inventing minds of our country had for their everyday use.

  • 5/5 Richard Frame I. 10 months ago on Google
A deep dive into the unique history of Edison and Ford's Winter homes, you get to see the laboratory even, original phonographs and much more.. walk the grounds freely or with a tour guide.

  • 5/5 Kathy M. 5 months ago on Google
A great place to visit if you're in the Ft Myers area. We got a cool little " private" tour because only 4 of us had paid for the guided tour. Scott was so knowledgeable about every aspect of Edison's history. He was very impressive. There is a museum with Ford's cars and some of Edison's inventions. Across the road are their estates which sit on beautiful waterfront grounds. We learned a little about Ford, but the majority of the tour focused on Edison. There is a cute gift shop at the end of the tour.

  • 5/5 Sarah C. 5 months ago on Google
If you're in Fort Myers, you've gotta check out Edison and Ford's winter estates—it's a real gem. First thing you'll see is this massive Banyan tree at the entrance that's just mind-blowing. Seriously, it's like nature's welcome hug. Inside, there's this mix of cool old buildings, beautiful gardens, a research lab, and a museum dedicated to Edison and Ford. It's not just history; it's like stepping into their world. Oh, and don't miss the on-site store – they've got some really unique stuff. Plus, You can see the native plants of Florida from the garden next to the on-site-store. Whether you're into history or just want a chill day surrounded by good vibes, these estates are a winner. It's not your average tourist spot; it's like a little escape into the past with a touch of nature. Don't miss out! 👍

Our family visited the Estates on the evening before Christmas Eve to see the lights. What an awesome experience it is to see the beautiful decorations and the amazing Christmas lights! The hot chocolate and pastries were really good! The sun going down on the river provided some amazing photos. The history of the Estates is very educational.
