It is one of the six Dacian fortresses in the Orastie Mountains that are part of the UNESCO world heritage in Romania The fortress was built in the 1st century BC. for the purpose of protection against Roman conquest - The access & orientation is not the best but is certainly worth to check-it out

From Costesti there’s a gravel road uphill that leads to the fortress and a car could reach pretty close to it. There are several elements to this fortress, some of them readily available, some of them not. From the top of the “hill” you can see the towers, but if you follow the path downhill you start seeing a temple, a tower and another temple. The downward path ends up back to the gravel road eventually, close to the village.

It was a nice walk up to the Fortress. From place to place there are small plates that show the way. Please take the road and not go through the forest (slippery). There are only some ruins left, there is absolutely nobody there (maybe just other tourists). The only living things you will find are a few lizards and bugs. Someone does cut the grass, so I guess that's maintenance. Also I haven't seen any trash.

Really liked this UNESCO site! Info is sparse, but the history of Romania before the Romans is here :) It is beautiful, mysterious and not super popular so you have it for yourself basically. You need to really like old stones and world heritage sites though. Do not visit the capital before coming here or the disappointment will also be capital. But the nature around the place and the walk are nice

A bit bumpy road with the car but if there are no tourists this can be done ok otherwise I recommend to find a parking lot 200 m below the fortress entrance. In the fortress just walk the entire circle of the lower fortification ring and you will find 2 sanctuaries that you could easily loose.

First of all reaching this place by a car may be difficult, as the road is not an asphalt one and it is going all the way up. Once you will reach there you may discover several remains of the stone building. I must say it is pretty mysterious place. Unfortunatelly there are not many signs, explaining the history of this place. As many historical sites in Romania this one is underinvsted. However if you want to know more about Dacians, there is a nice museum in Deva (close by), where you can get infotmation first. Personally I liked this place a lot.

The place is advertised but the road is not very good. Once you get there it is not a lot to see. Only some rocks unde roofs, no information about the history, the historical sites are not restored. They could do more with these historical sites.

The Costești fortress was a Dacian fortified town. Located in Costești village, Hunedoara County, it belongs to the Dacian Fortresses of the Orăștie Mountains World Heritage Site. The fortress was built during Burebista's rule, with the purpose of defending the area against the Romans.

Very nice! No visitation fee is payable. The first capital of Dacia in the time of Burebista. A place full of history in an exceptional natural setting.

Very beutiful landscapes, I remove one star because the access road is in bad condition, and the place looks abandoned. But if you in the area is worth visiting.

The site is very nice, however I had to walk uphill for one mile or so as the road condition was somewhat poor.
