Bomb! Had my hot spicy sandwich. I thought that the spice was going to be like a saucy type. It wasn’t so I thought it was a little weird. But the chicken was amazing! I don’t think I’ve had a better fried chicken sandwich than that. The chicken was so juicy! I love my heat so I got the one before the “what the cluck” because the guy said I had to sign a waiver. But I will get it next time I think they exaggerate about the heat. Downside is the prices, man I think I paid like 15-17 dollars for my sandwich without fries or drink. It won’t hold me back From going again, but I will hold me back from going often.

Visiting from Dallas and happened to stop by here for a quick bite. What a mistake that was. Many things not being done right in this restaurant. The staff is very rude and honestly stingy with utensils, sauces, etc. The kitchen is open and you can see your food being prepared and no one is wearing a hair net. I did not take a zoomed in picture of the fries but there was clearly a long dark black hair present. That was very unappetizing and killed my hunger off the bat. The food is not bad, however not worth the prices they have listed. For $12 just a chicken sandwich that isn’t even on par to other places I have been to that sell if for less ? If you add a order of fries it’s $16. If you want sauce another $.50. I was clearly disappointed, on top of that the music is way too loud, you can’t even hear the person next to you. The 2 stars are for the good soda they make and ok sandwich.

I got the overloaded chicken sandwich with hot Cheetos and Mac n cheese. It looked so amazing so I had to try it. What can I say except it looks way better than it tastes. The Mac n cheese is bland and the chicken itself is very dry and soggy. It doesn’t have the crispy skin that a fried chicken sandwich should have. The flavor was lackluster with most of it coming from the hot Cheetos. Honestly a huge miss

The first two times I ate here I was incredibly impressed with the food and service. Up until now it was my absolute favorite restaurant. However, I went there today and I was appalled at how the employees were handling their masks. After I ordered my food I noticed that of all three workers one had their mask below their nose, one had their mask below their chin, and one had their mask off most of the time and would periodically grab it and pull it up just below their nose (touching their nose but not changing their gloves.) if I had noticed this before paying I would not have stayed. I was happy to see they told a customer she had to put her mask on, and when she said she had a “medical exception” they had her go sit at a table and wait. It’s good they're enforcing the mask policy but the irony was not lost on me that they weren’t even wearing masks themselves.

*This is in reference to a visit a month or so ago. My boyfriend and I were craving Monroe's and were excited to order some delicious fried chicken. We were very disappointed to see most of the employees not wearing masks properly. Most of them just wore it barely covering their mouths and some were just wearing it under their chin. Also, the music was so loud it was hard to order and hear what the cashier was saying. Furthermore, the other customers in the store weren't wearing masks properly covering their noses and mouths, and some were coughing into the air too. The food portions have gotten smaller too. The fries have almost decreased by half and the tenders have gotten smaller. Overall, we are extremely disappointed in the lack of COVID concern by Monroe's and its employees and for not getting our money's worth when it came to the food. We haven't visited since this incident and we don't plan on visiting again either.

Hot damn! Hands down the best chicken sandwich. All other establishments need to apply. Tables, counters, and floors were clean. There were two ordering kiosks at the counter that were easy to use. Decor is contemporary, bold, clean, with mugshots of celebrities all over the walls. Soda fountain area was clean and well stocked. Trash can was not overflowing. Restaurant temperature was just right and the clientele was very diverse in age and color, mostly groups of three or more. Steady flow of customers. No parking lot as this is a downtown location, so you'll need to find a nearby parking garage or meter. Staff was friendly and confident and had a sense of urgency. Staff clothing was casual and well kept. Food ordered all had great presentation, was at the perfect temperature, and perfect texture. All food came in carryout containers which was well appreciated. Chicken sandwich was phenomenal, juicy, crispy breading, bursting with flavor, perfectly spicy, and made even better with the slaw and pickles. Sandwich buns were tasty and soft. You can choose how spicy you want the patty; I chose "hot". Hands down the best chicken sandwich. I can't think of anyway it could be better. Collard greens were so flavorful, I could eat a gallon. Mac and cheese was creamy and topped with delicious cornbread crumbs which added a little sweetness. Moon Pie was so good, huge, and not too sweet which I loved. Tried several sodas from the fountain and they were all amazing. This meal was one hundred percent worth every penny. On my next visit, I want to try more sodas from the fountain, the flaming hot Cheetos side, and try a spicier level of chicken sandwich. Tip: they do not validate parking for cityscape parking garage, so buy something at CVS on your way out. Thank you Monroe's, can't wait to visit again!

Arguably the best chicken sandwich in AZ. Extremely flavorful, with a healthy size of chicken breast. Aside from Miss Chicken, not many others compare. Please make sure to stop in when you're downtown and treat yourself.

Tried Monroe's for the first time today, as they were having a pilot run on halal chicken. I was really impressed with the portion size and quality of the sandwich, definitely worth it and would love to go again and try some of their other products. Unfortunately I ate my sandwich way too fast before being able to snap a photo. I hope they're able to continue sourcing halal chicken.

After all these reviews, we decided we MUST stop to try Monroe’s. People that call this “real southern hot chicken” have never been to the south. The heat was there but it lacked flavor. The only flavor I picked up was greasy. Where was the seasoning? The sandwich was very soggy and didn’t have the crisp that typically comes with real southern fried chicken. They slathered the sauce and the slaw without letting the excess juice drain. What a disappointment. Perhaps Monroe’s missed the memo about Velveeta cheese. It’s not real cheese and it doesn’t belong in southern food ....ever. I did give them one star for the pickles and the fries. While deciding where you will eat keep in mind that KFC’s is cheaper and just as good as Monroe’s.

Got the “hot” chicken sandwich. Not too spicy that would I would need something to drink but a good kick. The fries were well seasoned. The slaw was bland. The pickles were crisp and fresh. Not a great sandwich or fries for the price.

Everything was definitely on spot at this restaurant. I ordered a fried chicken sandwich and it was flavor. I had mild sauce which had a little kick but that's what I was looking for. Their mild sauce was actually mild and not regular. If I lived here and worked downtown this would definitely be my lunch spot. Service was good and quick. The music was a plus for me. A nice lunch vibe. Highly recommend.

Had this for the first time recently. We really liked it, and definitely want to go back! The chicken fingers were large, as was the sandwich. Everything was fresh, including the delicious fries. Came back a second time and got “hot” which wasn’t as spicy. “Extra Hot” will be my order going forward.

I have never had Nashville style hot chicken before but have always wanted to try it. Since it was my first I can't speak for authenticity but WOW was it good. I was very surprised by the quality of chicken and how delicious the sandwich was. I also got the tenders with their hottest available option because I love heat. Yes it is very hot but good if you are a fan of extreme spice. I was very impressed with both of my meals and the fries are awesome too. If it was closer to where I live I would eat here weekly.

Great vibes, the people working there all where very friendly. Best chicken in town and they dont play with the spicy levels I was crying at "burn baby burn (hot level)". I'm still burning but it's a great burn because it was delicious. the chicken was juicy and the outside had a nice crisp. I took my kids and they do have a no heat "southern style" sandwich and tenders.

Monroe’s chicken has the best chicken tenders I’ve ever ate! I ordered the 3 piece chicken tenders & fries (mild) the portion was big enough for 2 people. I loved every bit of what I ate. The only thing that I wish would change was that it took over half hour to get my meal. I mean it’s that popular, busy & delicious but it felt like forever to get my food. Other that how long it took I will definitely come back again to enjoy their delicious menu!

Beware of the hottest level. I thought I was going to die. But....the other hot ones and even the non hot options are so good! Reasonable prices and friendly staff.. I do have to say that the music is extremely loud and not censored.

Monroe's has been the new talk in town this weekend, because they've introduced something new to their menu- HALAL chicken! Upon entering, it was clear the staff did a great job to enforce social distancing in the restaurant, and the orders were taken on a screen. The staff working there was also incredibly kind and sweet, and was readily available to answer any questions you may have. I tried the classic Fried Chicken Sandwich in Medium, and ohhh did it hit the spot! The flavors were so rich, and the Medium was definitely spicy. I would say I typically like mild-medium spice level, so if you're like me, I'd go with Medium. However, if you have a higher spice tolerance, I'd go with Hot or Extra Hot. They have several other items on the menu that I would definitely like to try the next time I go. I highly recommend this spot to anyone wanting to check it out!

This place is fantastic! We came in for lunch, the service was quick, the place is clean, staff are nice. The food is amazing, I had chicken tenders with fries, cornbread Mac and cheese. My friend had a spicy chicken sandwich and collard greens. She lives down the street and has been telling me how good everything is, she's not exaggerating. I'll definitely be back. It seems a little pricey (just under $20 for lunch), but it was so delicious I don't care. Plus it was enough food that I'll have the rest for dinner, and I can't wait.

If you are the type of person seeking spicy eats look no further, "What the Cluck" lives up to its name. The chicken is juicy, tender and crispy just as Hot Chicken should be. The Belgian sandwich is huge and comes with maple syrup on the side so you can design your level of "sweet-heat" to your liking. Staff was friendly and the restaurant was clean and had a unique vibe. Great spot overall!!

I had the "extra hot" chicken sandwich with pickles and coleslaw with crinkle frys on the side. The sandwich was really good. The spice level for me was perfect (I recommend going with a lower level heat if you aren't used to fairly spicy food). The fries were hot and fresh! Would go again but it's such a long drive. From west valley.

This is a sandwich worth writing home about. It has everything going on. Fried chicken, cornbread man and cheese, ranch, flaming hot Cheetos. Somehow it all works. It’s enormous-and definitely big enough to share. The onion rings are also awesome-coated in a delicious batter and fried perfectly. So happy to see places like this in downtown Phx!

Ordered delivery. It was a tasty meal. Got the fried chicken sandwich with onion rings. Be careful the sandwich can be messy. It's a good size piece of chicken. Got mild but it still had plenty of heat. It was a little dry but had great flavor. Onion rings were plentiful and decent but overcooked. My appetite was sufficiently satisfied.

still the best hot chicken on US soil. Simply the most delicious tasting seasoning that truly makes it seem like you're eating chips instead of chicken. I can't speak for any other heat levels other than hot but the HOT is so perfect. I've been visiting since 2021 and it's just as good as it's ever been. I really can't recommend this place enough. God bless Monroe's I can only hope you expand to denver one day

The food was absolutely amazing! I got the sloppy popcorn chicken, add egg and cheese, the cornbread mac and cheese and the chocolate milkshake. The lines were a bit long but the wait was absolutely worth it. I wouldn’t recommend this place if you’re in a rush, but it is definitely good if you have about an hour to sit down and have lunch.

Good and satisfying. Just had a sandwich and potato salad. Wish the price point was lower or there was a combo option with the sandwich ($16 for the two). The chicken breast was as big as my hand. And the hot spice was more of a medium for my taste. Friendly staff. Would definitely go back to try other things.

Way too expensive and way over-rated. They play the music too loudly which made it difficult to speak to my friends during lunch. I don't recommend this place.

  • 4/5 Mikey N. 3 years ago on Google
The food is extremely good. The placement of the area is great and is also super nice inside, it has television, and music. The service is awesome and super helpful Incase you are stuck. The major problem that I can understand due to the area it is in is the price, for 2 people you spend up to $50 for 2 sandwiches with fries and drinks. It’s very good, but for the price I don’t know if I can come by often.

  • 5/5 Tien D. 3 years ago on Google
Okay, first off, the chicken was PHENOMENAL. I’m visiting from out of town and came here yesterday. We ended up coming back today for lunch because it was so good! SECONDLY, I travel for the food and we had the pleasure of being greeted by the owner both times we were in. Keep in mind, to comply with social distancing, everyone had masks on. But the owner recognized my friends and I on our second visit regardless of having the masks on and it was just incredibly welcoming! That’s exceptional service right there! Thank you for the incredible food! I will be dreaming of my chicken sandwich forever now!

    Best in Phoenix. Period

  • 3/5 Robert H. 3 years ago on Google
Way over seasoned (I got medium). Normally I would think they are doing it attempting to hide the quality of the chicken, but that is not the case I thought the quality of the chicken was very good. The Cornbread Mac & Cheese tasted like oven baked Craft with some cornbread sprinkled on the top. Fries were way over seasoned as well. The fountain soda is amazing I wish more places had this brand. The moon pie was good. They do not play when you ask for extra pickles they give you extra pickles (an entire container full). Service was good, just over seasoned and a premium price.

Saw this place on TikTok and decided we had to check it out. We went early (11am) to try and avoid any afternoon rush and that proved to be ideal. We were promptly greeted as soon as we walked in and Victoria was extremely helpful and made the place seem very inviting. Since it was our first time she directed us to the tablets to place our orders. We both decided to try the chicken sandwich (we went for the medium and hot spice levels) and crinkle frys and organic sodas which are dispensed from a super cool "beer tap" like dispenser. The chicken sandwich was so delicious, the bun was fresh and buttery, spice and chicken was on point, the coleslaw was crisp and the homemade pickles were a perfect complement to round out the flavors. The fries are seasoned and were cooked to a perfect crispness. I hate a soggy fry!!! Let's just talk about the atmosphere, the walls are uniquely decorated with mugshots which made it fun to try and guess who they were as we waited for our food. We did dine in and it was very clean and they have tables and floor marked as to stick to social distancing. I loved the music and it wasn't so loud that we couldn't have a conversation but just loud enough to enjoy it. If you are looking for a good lunch spot and chicken is your thing ya gotta at give this place a try. Oh one last bit of info...everything is sold a la carte but worth it! We will be returning.

Hot chicken was hot, I got the hottest and it was tasty, could have been hotter ? the meal is a bit on the pricey side considering fries aren't included, but you get a fairly large piece of chicken. We'll be back if we're on that side of town but wouldn't necessarily make the trip from surprise just for this like we did on Sunday.

I came here while visiting family in town . The menu seemed appealing to me so I had to check it out. There was a good amount of people in there and the inside was small. They could've done a better job at the social distancing and six feet. You place your order on a tablet then wait till your name is called. I got the chicken tender box which came with fries . I got one of the hotter sauces for my tenders. When I tell you the portion size was big and the food tasted delicious I was in heaven. Next time I'm gonna have to try the chicken sandwich I just wish the entrees came with a side and drink instead of buying separately.

Now, I've never had a true Nashville hot chicken sandwich. However, I can almost guarantee you it cannot be better than the fried chicken sandwich that is served here at Monroe's. When I first walked into Monroe's, I was very impressed with the decor. The restaurant was kept incredibly clean and had almost a retro type of feel to it. There were mugshots of famous people all around the restaurant walls (not sure what the theme was but was interested to see Snoop's mugshot on the wall). As for the food... I was initially a little taken aback by the prices. HOWEVER, do not let that deter you. These portions are not your normal portions. I ordered a Hot Fried Chicken Sandwich. I debated getting fries but decided against it (I am a college student after all). Once the food came out, I was blown away. The sandwich is a very good size with a nice, big piece of chicken that I don't see at other restaurants (I'm looking at you, Chick-fil-a). Possibly one of the best fried chicken sandwiches I've ever had (and, oh, I've had *many*). Back to the fries, I almost regret not getting them. I was able to mooch off of a friend's order of fries and, they too were one of the best fries I've had (especially for being crinkle cut). The seasoning was on point with just the right amount of kick. Personal recommendations: - get the orange sauce they have on the side. It is about 50 cents and worth every penny. - if there are two of you going, get at least one order of fries and share it. they are definitely worth it. I have future plans to come back and try the waffles and will update when I do. Also zabiha halal chicken is available. You can request it through the self-service kiosk.

The spicy chicken is probably the best choice on the menu in my opinion theres an option to choose the spice level as well but it 12$ per sandwich I think that's a little much I was hoping at least 7-10$ but the mac and cheese is alright I think it just needs seasoning the chicken as well. The fries are pretty decent. But the wait is kind of not worth it you would expect it to be hot and fresh instead it's just a little over room temperature.

  • 5/5 Jordan C. 3 years ago on Google
Believe the hype! This place is absolutely delicious! The only downside was we had to order almost everything on the menu. A mild hot chicken sandwich with cheese A medium ultimate hot chicken sandwich Fries Mac and cheese with Flaming Hot Cheetos Moon Pie The sandwiches are messy but they do a pretty good job at wrapping them. They are big enough to split if you're ordering sides. The ultimate chicken sandwich is a beast but sooo good and gluttonous. The fries are nice and crisp. Mac and cheese, their cheese sauce is legit, and it balances well with the hot cheats. Moon pie is massive and super rich, on the complete opposite spectrum of the savory dishes but a solid way to end the meal.

Monroe's is delicious! Their chicken is crispy and the pickles are soooo good. We ordered two chicken sandwiches today and both noticed the size of the chicken had decreased. It used to be HUGE and good enough for two meals. Now it's still decent, but I could easily finish one sandwich and still have room for more. Maybe not worth it now as it's not cheap.

We knew two things before going here: it had the “best chicken sandwich in the valley” and it was pricey. Both are true but you see we gave it 5 stars because man, it is good!! A definite case of getting what you pay for, this was way worth the $$$: the chicken & waffles was crunchy and sweet, the original chicken sandwich was tangy and flavorful. Now we know what all the fuss is about—believe the hype, this is a top valley spot!

This place is one of my go to spots. Love the chicken sandwich. Beware the spice is no joke. I would recommend mild for most people and ease your way into a medium. The onion rings are the bomb too. The place gets super busy around lunch time so order online or expect to stand in line. Staff is always really nice and helpful. The place is always clean and they wipe the tables down pretty often

I went in today for my first time, and the employees and owner were so friendly and helpful! they recommended the chicken sandwich, I drove 20 minutes home, and was the chicken sandwich still tasted AMAZING when I got home. I was actually alittle surprised because I thought it might get soggy or something, but nope. Not at all. They know how to season their chicken, and the sauce that comes with it is amazing! thank you guys so much for the great food and amazing service 💖 I will definitely be back

Being a huge fan of Dave's hot chicken in LA I was excited to try this place but was extremely disappointed, I got the chicken sandwich extra hot and it definitely wasn't extra hot. My girlfriend got the strips regular hot and she was on fire. So maybe they mixed them up. Sandwich isn't worth the price at all chicken was very bland and didn't even come with fries. Guess I'll wait to visit LA and get some REAL hot chicken at Dave's.

I have tried so many different hot chicken places, and this is truly the best!! The chicken is not dry at all!! The spice level well there is finally a food that makes my nose run!!! The Mac and cheese taste like actual real Mac and cheese and not like water!! If I could score higher for this place I would! I can truly say this place is worth the drive and worth the price! It’s my favorite and will now become my only chicken sandwich place!!

Best chicken in downtown Phoenix and a lot closer to my work than Chickfila.

A great place to eat. Delicious food everytime I go there. Good service and patient staff. Very clean. Bathroom on site. They also have good drinks, please get refills if you want. Bar on site. Remember it is a restaurant not a fast food, so you have to wait for your food after you order. Or order from your house and pick up at the location.

Best chicken sandwich we’ve had! Well seasoned and so moist! Only regret was we should’ve ordered fries too but thought the plate came with some. Will be back for more!!

The sandwich is big and the sauce is good but the chicken wasn't crispy. Very overrated and overpriced.

It was my first time eating Nashville cuisine and I was very impressed. The staff was extremely welcoming and the restaurant was spotless. I got the mild chicken sandwich and it was perfect, I will probably kick it up a notch on my next visit. The coleslaw paired perfectly with the seasoning and spice of the chicken. The cornbread mac and cheese was insanely good, it was a lot of food for me but couldn’t help but eat every last bite. I would highly recommend Monroe’s Hot Chicken!

Food was okay. (Wasnt even spicy) Customer service was meh. (Slammed cup when asked for cup for soda) Has room for improvement Also, business hours were wrong online. They were fixed later after people came in and getting rejected in an impolite manner. Meh.

Believe the Hype this place is legit!!! The waffle chicken sandwich was amazing, the mac and cheese was FIRE, and the Manager or owner was very friendly and down to earth would definitely recommend

  • 3/5 Mr. B. 3 years ago on Google
The seasoned crinkle fries were pretty good, and the moon pie was HUGE!!! The chicken sandwich is a nice size but I think it was disappointing for the amount it cost. The chicken taste like there's no seasoning at all on it so it's very bland tasting. The sandwich gets flavor from the sauce that they put on it but the chicken itself definitely needs seasoning

  • 5/5 Maci K. 2 years ago on Google
Delicious food! I had the chicken fingers and fries meal and every part of it was so good! The medium spice was perfect for me because it definitely had heat but wasn’t overwhelming and had an awesome flavor. The fries were seasoned as well and the sauce it comes with was so good! You should definitely check it out!

Our order took all of 3 minutes and came out piping hot. Food was AMAZING. Frys are cooked and seasoned perfectly, hot chicken sandwiches are great (we got medium and hot) but the collard greens were my personal favorite! I can’t wait to come back and try more of the menu. Added bonus, it’s extremely clean inside. :)

  • 5/5 Tyler D. 1 year ago on Google
A good choice for a quick lunch. It was my first time and I got the fried chicken sandwich with mild sauce and a side of ranch. The sandwich was huge, fresh, quality and delicious. The mild even was pretty spicy for me, similar to regular buffalo. No problems with the service. Self service kiosk and then you wait for it. It is a little pricey but not crazy for what you get. If in the area again, I’d come back and maybe try the Belgian waffle sandwich.

Hands down they have some of the BEST Mac n cheese and collard greens I have ever had in my whole 36 years of life. I was especially grateful that the greens were seasoned with turkey. Shake fries was also unexpectedly pleasant. Overall I enjoyed everything we ordered. And the portions are huge. Enough to split between two people easily. A must visit if in downtown Phoenix. This was the best part of my flight being canceled.

They young lady that took my order was super kind and easy going. Chicken was good. I had chicken tender meal with 3 tenders and fries. Thank you for a good meal.😁

  • 4/5 Nancy B. 1 year ago on Google
I enjoyed a very generous order of three tenders and fries. More than I could eat and I was very hungry. You get a lot of food and it is delicious but it's a bit pricey. As for the taste I asked for medium hot - next time I might get mild. Almost too spicy to really appreciate the flavor. Overall quite good and I'll go again.

We’ve visited a few of these unique chicken sandwich businesses in the past few years and this one really stood out. The food was delicious and was quickly prepared. The kick sauce was amazing too!

  • 5/5 Adela L. 9 months ago on Google
The food is really good. We got a whatta cluck chicken sandwich, and we were called up to be warned of spice. Husband loves spicy food and was all for it. He loved how much it burned and had a hard time eating, but ultimately, thought it was outstanding. It's super spicy, though, so be warned. I got the hot tenders, but honestly, flavor wise and quality amazing, but no spice whatsoever to me. Next time, i will try extra hot!

  • 5/5 Robert V. 7 months ago on Google
Monroe's Hot Chicken is a spicy sensation! The chicken had the perfect balance of heat and flavor, and the sides were equally tasty. The staff was attentive and accommodating, making the dining experience even better. If you love hot chicken, this place is a must-visit. I'll definitely return for more!

This place needs help. The music is way to loud like ear piercing but the staff was enjoying it. They go to great lengths to ignore you, the entire time I was there no one said a word to me and not even ANY eye contact was made. I came in trying to be polite but they gave me the cold shoulder and acted pissed that I was even there making them work (this was an hour before close). I'm usually pretty easy going but they were taking it to a whole new low of customer service and I work in customer service so I get it. This would have all not been a big deal if I got what I ordered. I got a regular chicken sandwitch, no spice. But when I got home it was WAY to spicy. But the fries were delicious!😅

  • 5/5 Chris P. 6 months ago on Google
Not only do they bring their spice game, they bring the flavor game too! I ordered the chicken sandwich extra hot with crinkle cut fries and it did not disappoint. For you spicy lovers out there this is by far the best spicy chicken sandwich in town. Next time I'm stepping up to the "WHAT DA CLUCK!" spice level and will let you know how it goes. Definitely give this place a try!

Best hot chicken joint I've hit. Chicken was perfectly cooked, portions were huge. Best crinkle fries ever. Crispy exterior, fluffy interior, awesome seasoning! Yummy sodas! Try the pineapple cream. Well done food!

For those that don't know, I like fried chicken. Unfortunately, I can no longer have it unless it's GF. Well, it turns out that this place offers a GF option, which I took advantage of. Also, I had the cole slaw which was very tasty. Go here, get good food, eat and then leave. Or grab yours to go, either way, you won't be disappointed. Plenty of seating just before noon today.

  • 3/5 Aliza H. 4 months ago on Google
The chicken tenders and fries were over cooked. I get it was a busy Saturday, but the food was not up to par. The salad was less than impressive with a few wilted spinach leaves and 2 cabbage ends in my salad. Do better Monroe's, I spent almost $45 for over cooked chicken /fries and a salad not worth the price.
