I read all the bad reviews and I can only base mine on our experience. Obviously you get what you pay for. This isn’t the Four Seasons, The Ritz, Montage Resort. It’s an economically priced hotel on a beautiful location. The grounds are beautiful. The pool is clean. The service is standard. The rooms are outdated. But they served their purpose for us. We rested in our rooms and were at the pool, beach, walking the boardwalk, shopping and eating at the local taco stands and restaurants most of the time. If you go please try the food stands/carts. Don’t knock them until you try them. Basically the same food as the restaurants but priced a lot less. We never noticed any bugs in the hotel rooms. The mattresses were hard but I enjoy a firm bed. One of our TVs didn’t work but they fixed it immediately. My room’s mini split stopped working early one evening and I let the front desk know. They repaired it within 20 minutes. I enjoy finer hotels just like everyone else but if you need a budget hotel in a great location then I would definitely recommend it. PS. They make you wear a wristband in order to make sure that only the hotel patrons are using the facilities. It seemed inconvenient to me at first but it’s understandable when the pool, bar, grounds and beach are not crowded. Also it gives the workers a way of identifying who they cater to. They constantly check to make sure you aren’t in need of anything. Hope this helps.

We loved our stay! We got beautiful ocean view room, bed was comfortable , AC was very cold at the times 😁. No wifi , but luckily our phones worked and we didn’t suffer much from that. Housekeeping was amazing, very sweet and hardworking ladies. They took care of us, so we took care of them. Check in and check out was a little weird, but we were pleased with everything else . Walking distance to everything you want to cover on first visit. Pool was clean, beach was amazing, beer was served as soon as it was empty. Hotel restaurant food was mediocre, but with so many choices around there’s no need to eat there.

The view was beautiful.. The mattress was so hard, I was so sore the next day, I felt miserable. Furniture outdated. Dont leave anything on the beach chairs, cover ups or towels, they will be stolen. I love meeting new people, but most of guest at this hotel do not speak English. My friend and I stayed at Fiesta Americano also and I gave them 4 Stars.

Upon our first step in the lobby I was impressed up until the point that we walked through the door to our actual room. It was very dated and the bed/pillows were rock hard and the shower drain was not screwed down, so if you stepped wrong you might actually get hurt. The pool was nice until about 3pm. Then everyone from the beach entered and it became a party where upon looking over the infinity edge there were beer cans strewn about and stuffed into the plants surrounding the pool. It seemed that no one wanted to clean those up or control the amount of litter being carelessly thrown around. If you want pool service, you’ll want to book somewhere else as every time we asked we felt as if we inconveniencing the wait staff, as if that wasn’t their job. But if you were out on the beach, all the service you could want. (Weird but, ok). Speaking of wait staff, breakfast was not great and again the staff seemed bothered by requests and once served, they never refilled drinks or asked if we wanted anything else. You’re better off going somewhere else for food. Plus side was being close to everything downtown. It’s all in walking distance. Moral of the story is: you get what you pay for.

Pro-tip... If you are driving pull into the hotel and ask nicely with a tip and they may just park your car for you. Money talks. I felt very taken care of and they were very accommodating too. The staff is super friendly. Rooms are decent, got the top floor facing the ocean.

I’ve stayed at Tropicana 3-4 times every stay has been awesome, location is prime right in old town. The beach is fabulous, great waves, always exciting, the beach vendors are pretty good a lot of familiar faces. The pool is nice, the rooms aren’t too fancy but are always very clean, comfortable and amazing views. The biggest reason I go back to this hotel is how amazing the staff is there. Always so friendly so personable, the front desk receptionist Noemi is fantastic! She is so helpful, lovely, and makes you feel like a vip. I was there recently and Noemi and all the staff were absolutely outstanding. Will definitely go back and stay there

No wifi in rooms, limited breakfast options served in cracked cups , power shut off for one whole day, poor quality and no professionalism , poor service . Only good thing is a view and location.

The rooms are acceptable for a cheaper Hotel but I think the mattresses haven't been replaced since the Vietnam War and are terrible. MAKE SURE YOU KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS FROM CHECKING IN so they don't charge you more fees when you check out to get more money from you, they told us that the guy that checked us in made a mistake and didn't charge us for the daily resort fees. DON'T LOSE YOU WRISTBAND, they tried to tell 2 of us who threw them away before we checked out that they are RFID wristbands (which they are not and that they cut off of everyone as they check out) and they tried charging us $30 (600 pesos) for each wristband. Lastly don't bother ordering food there, other friends had read not to but we got there before our other friends and had ordered before they told us.

Horrible, rude and extremely slow customer service. Terrible hotel and restaurant management (we literally got hung up over the phone twice)! You’d be tagged with an unremovable wristband for the duration of your stay, to top that, all rooms there have NO WIFI, and no fridge. Housekeeping is on another level. Our sheets and cover on both beds had some kind of blood stain on it! And the whole room just feels very dirty, especially the bathroom. Hotel itself is old and requires a major upgrade or at least do some repair works, the whole interior is just disappointing throughout. However! The location is great, and the view from the room is amazing and they do have large balconies. Definitely feel terrible for the people that doesn’t have a view at this hotel, I can’t even imagine.

Definitely NOT recommend!!! We booked and payed a sea sight room 10 months in advance, but during the check-in they informed the hotel was full. They found our reservation after 1 hour. Even so they placed us in a building outside the hotel premises. Next day, after we insisted, they changed our room to the type we payed for. But problems didn't stop there. Someone stole money from my backpack while it was inside the luggage storage. The staff exempted themselves from any responsibility. The hotel provides a bare minimum of services, the food is bad, no laundry, staff is unqualified, rude, and unreliable.

Due to an ice storm in Texas I wasn’t able to fly out the day I was supposed to. I called the hotel and spoke to a man in “the office” and explained the situation. He assured me there would be no problem. When I arrived the next day the young girl couldn’t find my reservation. I told them I was supposed to check in Wednesday but couldn’t fly due to weather and that I had called, even showed my call log on my phone. They kept digging through paperwork and an older lady tried to help. The young girl and older lady started arguing in Spanish then some other guy came up and said it was because I selected pay at the hotel. I told him it was prepaid and he wanted to argue about it. I showed my email receipt, he shut up and walked off. After 30-minutes of dealing with them, with no apologies for the confusion and inconvenience, I was given a room. The room looked nothing like the one in their photos. It was obviously outdated, faced the street and was across from a restaurant/club so it was very loud at times. The bed was extremely hard, a mattress on a concrete and wood slab. Several fixtures in the bathroom were broken, the shower head had so much build up that water sprayed everywhere. The only plus was the shower was big so I had room to move which was a plus because the water temperature wasn't consistent. Monday morning I woke up to find bed bugs on the bed and crawling on the wall behind the bed. I went to the desk and explained the situation to an older gentleman. I showed him the pictures of the bugs and he called someone. After waiting for 2-hours they gave me another room. Again, with no apology for what had happened. The only reason I'm giving them 1-star is because the bellman tried everything he could to get me in the new room faster. I understand that it's a less expensive hotel, but that doesn't excuse the situation.

No windows in room. Twin and very uncomfortable beds for a couple. Poor food and very limited menu. No WiFi or internet except in lobby. Exchange rate for cash was below local rates. It’s as a Rip off. No drinking water in room. Only 2 towels provided with no face cloths. Poor bathroom with ancient toilet that doesn’t flush right and is too low. Hotel is on the ocean, but no view. Stay away from this 1 star dive. The building needs to be knocked down and replaced along with management. Its 4 star rating must be faked because knowing in their right mind would cow. Back to this dive. Only redemption is location but there are many other hotels in the area.

Despite an impressive large lobby (that has seen better days), a hundred meters from the beach, affordable nightly rates ($75) and a passable room, I wouldn't stay at Hotel Tropicana again because: - They had no Wi-Fi in the room. They only strictly have it in the lobby. So if you're coming from another country hoping to access the internet or phone in your room, this is definitely not the place for you. I booked this room because my friend researched it (and assumed every hotel has wifi) no wifi is a non starter for me. - Upon arrival they spray down your bags with some sort of disinfectant. I get why that was implemented but at this point the guys running it are just spraying down your bag because they're supposed to (without care or purpose). And it's not light spritz either, it's industrial. My backpack was not soaked but definitely wet (only the top because they didn't care to spray the bottom?). Not a good omen. - They have strict guest policy. Which is technically fine but every time you walk into the hotel you're forced to show your key which felt like we were trespassers as opposed to guests. - if you want to have a guest you have to register them as the other person on your rez and get a wristband (and be sure you booked a room that allows for a second person) otherwise they charge you $$ - The reception desk wasn't very friendly. We went up there several times and 4 out of 5 times they had a bad attitude. Over the course of the day we had to ask for a blanket three times before finally getting one. - My shower felt like what a prison shower may feel like. Toilet too. Generally speaking They know they're going to get bookings because of their proximity to the ocean and price point. Due to that it doesn't feel like a hotel in the sense that they're there to take care of their guests on holiday. It feels as if you're paying for the right to stay at their hotel and you should be happy about that. We weren't. I moved out after 2 days and found a much better hotel that's cheaper has Wi-Fi and more centrally located (hotel de Roger). Fyi getting a hotel that's in the center of the zone is a 12 min walk to the beach as opposed to a 5 min walk.

This is such a beautiful Hotel. You feel like your in a beautiful oasis. Having the convience of the pool or ocean is great. Beautiful wherever you walk on this property. The staff all the way around are so pleasant and helpful. On site restaurant/bar with open views. 2 pools/ one attached for the kids. Balconies to enjoy view as well as hear the ocean. Close to shopping and all kinds of restaurants as well as being right by the board walk for your convenience! Beautiful night time on the beach available just a short walk away as well. Nothing bad to say about this place at all. Can't wait to come back again!

We were first time guests at the Hotel Tropicana this March and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We will certainly be returning next year. The staff were wonderful and we would particularly like to single out one of their Front Desk Managers - Noemi. From check-in to departure, our satisfaction was clearly her paramount concern. Noemi was welcoming, kind and very patient, very responsive regarding any special requests that we had. Further, we say that she is a leading example of the Tropicana’s customer service standards, emblematic of the attitude that we encountered generally from ALL the staff at the hotel. Sincere thanks to Noemi and her colleagues. We look forward to next year!

This is our second home. The people are amazing and what brings my husband, sister, brother- inlaw, and myself back every year. So many people to thank for our stay but a big thank you to Noemi, Manuel, Jesus, Marco, Umberto, Sebastian, and many, many others. The day before leaving for home, we had the pleasure speaking with the front desk manager (I have forgotten this gentleman's name). Making sure our stay was what we expected. If you are looking to having a amazing place to stay with wonderful staff, this is the place to be. We will be back next year!

If I can give this hotel a zero rating, I would! It had decent views from our room but the room itself is very dated. For the first 3 days, we couldn’t get a proper rest because of the construction noise coming next to our room as an elevator is being installed. The check in staff could use more customer service skills training as they were not pleasant at all. The worst part of my experience at this hotel is losing my Cuban gold chain! After check out, Marco, offered to keep our bags in the storage and gave us zip tie to “secure” our bags. I was too trusting to agree when at the back of my mind, anyone interested to search my bag for valuables can easily cut the tie and replace it. True enough, when we received our bags, I checked my jewelry pouch and noticed that one of my chains (the biggest one apparently) is missing. It’s obviously hard to present evidence unless the hotel has installed security cameras in their storage room, if they haven’t done so yet. Felt the hotel feeling extremely disappointed but hopeful that the management will take the issue seriously, investigate, and catch the culprit. At the very least, I just need compensation.

With the price they’re charging for rooms, they need to step up and get wifi in the rooms. It’s not good enough in this day and age to have wifi only in the lobby. Many use the internet for safety, to communicate with family and friends while away, to keep their business afloat or work while they are away, to watch movies while on holiday, to make phone calls through the internet. This isn’t the 1970s. Wifi is cheaper in Mexico than North America yet they skimp on services. The location does not make up for this shoddy lack of amenities and service for guests.

A perfect location, beach and pool. Nice rooms, can be noisy because of tiled floor and concrete walls. Nice restaurant on site for breakfast and lunch, or dinner. Check in service a bit spotty, could be more forthcoming with information.

We stayed for 3 nights. Rooms are basic, clean, and bed is hard. I woke up with my body hurting everyday. Door doesn’t properly lock. Wifi does not reach the rooms though it’s only for lobby area. Ocean view was beautiful! Service had its good and bad moments. Some of them like working here some make you feel like you’re a disturbance to them. Breakfast not included. Everything is sold separately and expensive. More than likely would choose a different hotel next time.

Noemi at the front desk was wonderful and helpful. We enjoyed everything about the hotel and would not hesitate to come back. Great pool and beach access steps away. Can’t be beat!

The WORST hotel, staff working is so rude, specially the waiters and the towel lady, had to wait 45 min to get my breakfast and it was not even busy in the restaurant. Food was terrible and not many options to choose from, I think I cook better and I'm a terrible cook, the Wifi never worked, the rooms old fashioned with No smart TV, no fridge. But overall the worst thing was the Staff they be like very Gruñon, specially the Towel lady. If you have the chance NEVER book here. Thank you

We stayed here March 2023. I was a little reluctant with the mixed reviews. Stay here! It was great! The location is fantastic. Everything is walk-able. 1 heated pool (other is not) and beach front. We never ate at the restaurant. Way too many great options within walking distance. The 3 star for service is for the restaurant. We sat down for breakfast and no one came to offer us even a menu. We got up and left. They had lots of staff. I am sure it was just a over look. We would stay here again!

The rooms are outdated. The bathrooms are less than pristine. Sections of the hotel are under renovation. We stayed at two rooms. One was near the ground floor and on the road side. It was noisy and older than our second room, which was a junior suite on the seventh floor overlooking the beautiful beach and ocean. Besides the view, we had a full kitchen, small, but equipped and that was great. The pool area and the beach are fantastic. The staff are friendly and accommodating, also patient with our very poor Spanish. The location within the romantic district is the best part. There’s so much to see and do in this area of Puerto Vallarta. The most frustrating difficulty was lthe dismissal wifi access in the rooms. It was non-existent in the two rooms we stayed in throughout our 8 days.

Totally happy with my stay there. They helped me and my friend so we could stay in the same room the whole time. The staff is unbelievably friendly and helpful. The pools are clean and are a perfect temperature. The location of the hotel is perfect for taking walks to check out the area. The rooms have fans and are nicely air conditioned. The beach is clean and enjoyable to lounge on all day long. The prices for the rooms are quite good. I have no complaints about this place other than the wifi only being downstairs. I will def stay there again!

  • 3/5 Namandeep S. 4 months ago on Google
I went there for a vacation, it’s a old hotel with very basic amenities. We two different bookings in the same hotel, in two different types of room. Which apparently are their best rooms. So for the first room, we were in the main building on seventh floor. The room had an amazing view of the ocean. But, the rooms are very old as it is an old hotel. My bedding had holes in the and seemed like it’s been in use for decades. There wasn’t a mini fridge in the room so you can’t bring your drinks and water and keep them cold. Which was a very bad thing. They don’t offer ice machines you have to walk all the way down to the restaurant and it closes around 10. Next we had a bigger room with two queen beds( which aren’t actually queen beds are double) safe thing very basic amenities, no mini fridge. And the AC make very loud noise when it’s running, almost like a tractor. Overall, it’s not the best place to stay but if you can book it on cheap prices and you don’t care about conditions of the room, it’s not a bad place. Nearby all the major things and in a safe area.

Great all around for a family. Very well priced. Restaurant was weak point, overall very happy with the value, history and quality here. Rooms not huge, while location is great.

My friend booked this place for a couple of nights as the hotel I booked was very noisy with bad wifi. Much quieter in this oceanview room than the one I had booked. Not sure that it resolved the wifi issue. Good: 1. The pool was great! Very relaxing. They have loungers & umbrellas on the beach with servers for hotel guests. Bad: 1. Food not great. Don't wait for service, order at the bar. 2. Staff at reception were questionable. Like are they shady kind of questionable. 3. The washroom in his room did not seem very clean & not a pleasant smell. I think it is decent value for the price but its all about the pool overlooking the ocean & beach loungers. Don't expect much from the rooms or service from staff.

  • 2/5 Kseniia 5 months ago on Google
I had a bed experience with a service. I reserved a room for 1 person. when I asked for two towels for the pool, the lady at the reception ( Marcela) was rude and she refused my request in unacceptable manner. I wish the staff of Tropicana hotel was more friendly and professional.

  • 3/5 Caleb C. 5 months ago on Google
Older hotel, room was as described. Hard mattress. Great view from standard room on 4th floor, patio door did not seal so some outside noise; fairly quiet location at night besides the ocean. $50 peso pp P/night additional ‘service fee’ not disclosed before check in. Well lit street, good walking location to Zona Romántica bars/restaurants. Overall decent for a 3 star hotel on the beach for budget conscious travellers wanting to be close to everything yet away from the noise at night. Note: no bar fridge. AC worked, basic Mexican & English TV channels. Pool & Beach overall clean. Check-in/check-out pleasant besides the hidden fee noted above. Must wear wristband during stay

Had a nice time staying at Hotel Tropicana. Always stay there. The staff is very nice, The lady that helped us checkin was so nice, she works on the left side of counter I think her name is Naomi. Very nice lady, great customer service, set us up nicely. Try to get a supreme room or above. The price is right for a great location. I would say this hotel is like a Motel 6 or maybe a step above. The standard room not so good; I got that the last time I stayed there. As everyone says on here checking in is slow, so patience is needed. When the pandemic hit, and border was closed Tropicana gave us a refund two years ago. I totally appreciated they understood, and granted it. I give it 3 star rating only because it’s not a 4 or 5 star hotel, but staff is nice, and our room was perfect with a nice balcony right in front great location on the beach.

  • 4/5 Sheila H. 1 year ago on Google
This is our 5th or 6th time here. Love the people (Sean, Billy, Fidel, Naomi and Patricia especially). The location is great. Beach is beautiful. Taking a star away as they really need to address the standard rooms. The bathroom is very worn out, toilet leaking even though it was reported three times. Mildew stains in corners, peeling paint. Rusty faucet and drain. Bed was just springs with a sheet over it. So uncomfortable. And they no longer provide bottled water except day one. But when asked if the tap water is safe to drink, I got a doubtful shrug. How can you not provide your guest safe water in each room? That is crazy. Heard another guest complaining about how bad his standard room was. So we were not alone. Will I go back? Yes, but only if I can get an updated room. Come on Tropicana, you can do better with the standard rooms.

  • 2/5 Emilio V. 1 year ago on Google
Rooms are vary out dated and dirty. The bathroom sink and shower grossed me out. Check in was very slow, waited about 45 mins and there was only one person in front (already being help). Cheap price to match the room. Would not recommend if you’re a clean person.

  • 1/5 Torontonian 1 year ago on Google
This is a very basic hotel. Forget ocean view, if you booked economy rooms, there is no window at all. AC is working and there is no wifi in rooms. Breakfast is not in buffet, but only two eggs plus one sausage, just one sausage. The room is clean, and the mattress is ok. Every staff in the hotel shows the attitute, from reception to security and to the waiters in restaurant. Only good thing in this hotel is the location, no others. If you look for somewhere you can relax for few days, book elsewhere.

Very nice resort style hotel with a pool and beach front. The rooms are very outdated. They are not in the best shape. There is some construction being done that’s odd. Some staff seem to be hospitable and some are not. It’s really a hit or miss. It’s an ok hotel for what you pay for.

  • 2/5 DNA 1. 1 year ago on Google
Old rooms w partial or full ocean views. The front desk staff mostly grumpy, not hospitable staff. Like working with a government office, no smiles or helpfulness if they can help it. No WiFi in Rooms. Cold pool, not heated. No jacuzzi. Right in the beach though.

Great service, clean rooms, location is awesome. 4 stars due to Wi-Fi connectivity issues in most rooms.

  • 2/5 Kelly M. 1 year ago on Google
Pros: Clean large room with AC, awesome balcony with ocean view, and small kitchen Great location in romantic zone with nice beach access decent service, decent food and drinks, decent prices good availability even though close to booking date good price Nice pool Cons: Room has NO Wifi! When I called reception it was explained that 'sir, there is NO wifi in rooms, only in communal areas.' Website says wifi so for any normal person and any normal lodging this means in rooms. Should be explained. Also, even though there was a coffee maker, the hotel didnt give filters, I had to go buy a pack for 25 pesos across the street. There is a note saying that housekeeping does not was the dishes, but no soap or sponge provided. Other places have access to drinking water but not here. There are weird restricitons. Like towels at the pool are 15 pesos if you dont return the towel with the ticket. We only had 2 towels in our room even though we were 4 guests. Also, you have to wear a bracelet throughout stay. Kind of wierd if you go outside your hotel. Feels like a cattle farm. Also, when I wanted to get to the beach at sunset the door was being locked. I asked if I could get to the beach and was told I had to use the street. This is standing at the beach gate as the sun is setting. Total buzzkill. I get that their business model is probably based on the experiences with their ongoing demographic, but as a vacationer spending a fair amount of money, it feels like being nickle and dimed and literally makes me want to feel like I want to avoid paying any more than I have to. Would I stay here again? If I couldn't find something else? Sure. But I would try to find something that didn't feel like it was trying to control my experience if I could.

My husband and I stayed for one night and it was just what we needed before leaving for the airport the next day. The prices were very good especially for the food. However, the mattresses are VERY uncomfortable. I think I would have had better luck sleeping on the beach. But the staff was incredible, helpful and kind. Be advised check in/check out can take a long time. I think my husband and I had to wait at least an hour in the check in line

Terrible hotel management and service. Would not recommend to stay here. They only give you one hotel key, even if you pay for a 2 people room. We were abruptly woken up in the early morning by an employee (not housekeeping) who entered the room without even knocking and just wanted to see if anyone was in the room.

  • 2/5 Patty P. 2 years ago on Google
The hotel is in a great location you can walk to anything you need. This hotel is in need of updates. The bathrooms are really old. The shower curtain needed cleaning and that never happened. The rooms are really old as is the furnishings. No mini fridges but they will bring you a cooler... no working phone, the door to the room was flimsy. The bed was so hard I felt like it was a wooden table top with a sheet on it. There was 1 resturant there and it was not good. The safe in the room had a key and it was a small safe. The pool area needs chairs that are newer. The pool chairs were dirty and ripped. Not enough pool umbrellas or tables. I felt like this hotel was beautiful once but it has been neglected for the past 4 decades. Also no wifi in the rooms only in the lobby... what is that? H10 Hotels chain please buy this hotel and make it beautiful again!

Stay was good, location is excellent if you want to be in romantic zone. Nice beach and good overall service, however the room was disgusting. I was only there 4 days after being in Mexico for 2 months so I really didn't want to complain and I didn't. Room was old not very clean and the bathroom reminded me of an old hospital bathroom. I would not stay again. RUN

This place was great especially with the bellhop named Marco, friends of ours left in the cab to go to their hotel lost your phone inside their taxi, as soon as we found this out we immediately spoke to Marcos the next morning after describing the cab driver & time they got the taxi Marco got investigating and about he located my friend cell phone , it was safely & quickly returned to the owner , Marco went both above and beyond his job and got the task it done, I would gladly return to this hotel in the future 👍

You get what you pay for! It gets the job done for a weeks stay. Good location, cheaper drinks, and nice staff. Rooms were pretty noisy. There is also no wifi in the rooms which can be a inconvenience, not sure why that don’t offer that. Pretty much anything you need is in walking distance. Beach is beautiful, lots of vendors. They do not offer covid testing, but they were able to refer us to a great place that got our results back quick. Overall I had a good experience.
