In my experience, Hospital Joya appears to be a scam hospital for foreign tourists and is to be avoided. My wife was sick due to dehydration and needed an IV. They attempted to leverage her poor condition to demand 20,000 pesos up front. Instead, we went to Hospital Versalles where we were immediately attended to, received excellent care and paid a total of 2,660 pesos after the treatment was finished.

I did a walk-in for getting a COVID antigen test 1 day before my trip to the USA. I arrived to the hospital and the process was quick and easy. I did not have to wait a long time. The staff was very pleasant and courteous.

If I could have given 0 stars, I would have. Very disappointed with the lack of humanity at the Joya Hospital. Money is their number one priority, not helping people. Would never recommend any one go here, unless you plan on being hounded and followed around with a debit machine. Very sad for anyone needing medical attention. We sat in this hallway for 10 hours while waiting for them to help my mother in law, and they did nothing for her, and she was very very close to not making it. The people who make the decisions about how this place is run should be ashamed of themselves.

The Hospital was not so bad except the stains on the furniture. The problem I had from the get go was all about money the first Dr that examined me charged me 1000 pesos only cash no Factura. Went threw 2 surgeries both times is was postponed do to money from my insurance company and greedy Dr . Then as follow up after surgery’s I was charged again and asked for factura not provided cash only . The Dr was the type of person let’s get as much as we can out of this expat we will never see him again . Very rude Dr never never again . By the way I had another Dr look at the surgery and his response was what a hack job . Wow

They are crooks. I was experiencing severe food poisoning and they ordered a CT scan just to run up the bill. Mind you the doctor said he would do an ultra sound instead to save me money but ran the CT anyway. The second doctor who saw me said the CT scan was useless and wanted to run additional tests but that would require me to stay overnight. I declined because they said I was already over $2k in the hole and today overnight would be $10k USD. I was given some blood tests, IV and some pain and nausea medicine –my bill was $2,500 USD

A horrible horrible experience. My mom was here for an emergency neurological disorder which is extremely scary and needs intense care/looking after. We were here for 12 hours (3 hrs in ER, 9 hours admitted) and NOT ONE SINGLE doctor or nurse came to check in on her in the entire 12 hours. Someone came to take her blood and that's it. No one helped her use the bathroom or asked if she was ok. No communication on when we would hear about her labs or when a doctor or nurse would be coming to check in. There were 11 nurses in the nurses station laughing and playing on their phones the whole time and she was the ONLY patient on that floor. After 12 hours of absolutely ZERO care, we asked to be voluntarily discharged so we could go to Hospital Versailles. Our bill for a 12 hour stay with 0 care was $38,000 pesos. $1,500 pesos for a cup of Jello, really?? The only reason they gave her jello is because we asked to be transferred and they didn't want her showing up to a new hospital with an empty stomach from another hospital. Absolutely pathetic. This place is money hungry and really sad quality of care. I'm so disappointed in this hospital. Please do yourself a favor and go to hospital Versailles or even Regional.

The most shady hospital I've ever been. They never know what things cost until they already gave it to you so they upcharge what they want. The surgery was a very basic galbladder removal. They charged more than 7k dlls. When we asked around this type of surgeries in any of the best hospitals in mexico they where between 2k and 4k. 7k is ridiculous. They heard that we live in the US and completely took advantage of that.

This "Hospital" is private and an absolute joke. DO NOT GO HERE, ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE A FOREIGNER. **Please Read this if you are considering a hospital in Puerto Vallarta** I have worked in healthcare for many many years and my mom recently became very sick in Puerto Vallarta and unfortunately didn't have travel insurance while she was here. An obvious oversight on her part but we're all human beings and we all make mistakes. She was transferred by ambulance to Joya Hospital at the recommendation of a local doctor. I knew it would be costly but 8,200 pesos to take her 5 minutes down the road in Mexico when they literally picked her up and dropped her off (with no treatment, no IV, no oxygen, absolutely nothing) is outrageous. I'm a former Paramedic so while I expected it to be expensive, I expected them to so SOMETHING. Upon arrival at Joya Hospital, they immediately asked my father for a 20,000 Peso deposit, then within 2 minutes later told him 50,000 and then a couple minutes later 100,000 pesos. Finally when I arrived 5 minutes later and went to see what was going on, they asked for 500,000 pesos. This was all before they would even start ANY TREATMENT AT ALL and all while my Mom was still very much in need of immediate medical treatment and sitting in a room alone. That's over $30,000 Canadian dollars in 2022! I asked the guy if he knew how much money that actual was and if he realized how utterly ridiculous that ask was, especially within minutes of us arriving. This was all while the Paramedics are asking for 8,000 pesos as they wouldn't leave the hospital without payment. We eventually (after roughly an hour or so of us trying to sort this out) agreed to pay 20,000 pesos for them to start treatment, as my mom was in very rough shape (She couldn't move on her own, couldn't speak or respond/was confused, was not sure where she was and had obvious fluid building up in her lungs). They ended up wasting our time for 10 hours, only giving my Mom oxygen and a CT scan in the time she was there. No IV, no blood tests, no diuretics to reduce the fluid in her lungs, no actual treatment other than oxygen through a nasal cannula, not even a re-breather mask which would have been the proper treatment given the condition. We finally asked to be moved to another hospital (That they said was POSSIBLY cheaper but the treatment would be poor). They agreed because we wouldn't give them the full 500,000 pesos deposit they wanted. They wouldn't even give her an IV without that money even though we had given them 20,000 pesos already. We ended up paying 9000 pesos for oxygen and a CT. We were told that the ambulance transfer would be free since it was between hospitals (as it is in most countries) and of course the ambulance tried to charge us again when we arrived at the next hospital (Regional Hospital Puerto Vallarta). The moment we arrived at the general hospital, they took her in and started treating her. It's obviously not as nice of a hospital but the quality of care is all that really matters when in medical distress. The Doctors have been amazing, kind, supportive and have treated all of us, especially my Mother with the respect and care you would expect at any normal hospital in the world. We're all human beings and while I understand that this is still a business, the atmosphere, the treatment and the staff at the Regional Hospital has been 10000% better than at Joya. Joya Hospital is a tourist trap, plain and simple. EXTREMELY OVERPRICED and while it's nicer looking, I wouldn't recommend anyone go to this hospital unless they hate the person they're sending there. *This is not meant to be a dig against the Doctors/Healthcare Staff, we having nothing but respect for the healthcare workers in Mexico or anywhere else in the world. We were even told that the Doctors transfer between all the hospitals here. Just don't ever go to this hospital unless you are fully covered by insurance and even then, I would suggest going elsewhere just due to this inhumane money greedy tactic they employ.

Be careful, Doctors will insist on keeping patients longer than needed and doing additional not necessary exams with the only purpose of creating a larger bill. They will insist to get paid separately to keep more money. Everything is about MONEY in this hospital, 50,000 deposit to attend your emergency with/out insurance.

I can only tell you my story. I came to Mexico thinking i had a little infection. Turned out I had a hernia. I quickly received a consultation followed by an ultrasound. We decided surgery was the best option since the pain was not manageable. From the minute I entered the hospital till 48 hours later when I left; I cannot say enough. Everyone, From the people keeping my room clean and sanitized, to the nutritionists to the food delivery people to the nurses to the doctors were top notch. My surgery was performed by Dr Mariana Esteva. She and her entire crew were amazing. Great bedside manner. Time was taken to explain everything. I never felt like they were in a hurry to move on. I wish I could personally name and thank everyone. This will have to suffice. My partner and I have been debating a move to Mexico from Indonesia. The medical care here added another to the plus column for Mexico. Gracias, Liam

While on a one week holiday in Puerto Vallarta I became very sick and ended up with an ambulance ride to the SAN Javier Hospital. I received excellent care by the ambulance attendants and all emergency care staff and doctors. My appendix was removed 6 hours after arriving on a Sunday afternoon after the required staff was called in to staff the operating room. I found the hospital very clean and modern. The surgeon did an excellent job and I was able to return to the hotel 20 hours after the operation. Most of the staff spoke English which was reassuring when they were explaining my situation. My sister followed me to the hospital with my health insurance card. Admissions had her phone my Canadian insurance company to confirm they would cover all expenses therefore we did not have to make any payments except for the ambulance ride which is a separate business from the hospital. I would return to this hospital for medical care if the waiting time in Canada was too long. Thank you to all the SAN Javier staff who were so friendly and accommodating.

My husband was admitted due to an infection and serious complications that required emergency surgery. (October 2023) We cannot say enough good things about the care he received by the doctors and the support staff. It’s a very tight ship with rules that were different than what we expected as Canadians but the health care was exceptional and his doctors were very caring. We continue to be very grateful.

My wife slipped at our hotel at 11pm & required emergency attention for a broken wrist. From the admission overnight & throughout the medical services attention part, especially the Orthopedic surgeon, Dr Brambilo Campos & Pamela Thompson in International relations, all were FANTASTIC! The downside - the checkout & money part, no help with getting the claim paid by my Med insurance who had pre authorised. Useless check out staff who kept us waiting for hours. The cashier then left & the two ER attendants were totally incompetent at everything I enquired about on the very expensive final bill - $147000 pesos to be precise. The most expensive Celebrex anti inflammatory meds & paracetamol in the world by the way !!

I fell in my hotel room and fractured my left hip needing a partial replacement asap. Luckily I was near the Hospital Joya Marina and received the BEST care ever. The surgeon Dr. Brambila was excellent, the cardiologist was very thorough and efficient, I was visited twice by the competent physiotherapist and I received excellent friendly service from the nurses. Actually, I felt lucky that I needed this surgery in Mexico instead of Canada where I am sure I would not have been so well looked after. The only downside was my poor grasp of Spanish but most of the staff spoke and understood English. I am grateful that I had good travel insurance.

My girlfriend and I both got hurt bad. I sprained my ankle and she broke her 3 front teeth, however they only mentioned 2 teeth. We later found out after heading to the dentist that she also broke a piece in her gum holding the teeth . For me, they took an x-ray and said it wasn’t sprained, its currently been a week since the accident and still hurts the same. Then, they took us to their pharmacy to buy medication that honestly neither of us really needed. We know we didn’t really need it because my girlfriend’s dentist was really kind and even was trying to help me since she saw me limping pretty bad all the time, she gave me a list of what we really should get for my pain. The hospital didn't even offer a band to wrap around my ankle nor a cast or anything, just pushed me out the hospital in a wheelchair and thats it. Point is, they give you very little information on your injury and have you buy some medication that you really don't even need. They’re more interested in the money they’re going to make rather than their patient. ...and lastly to add on, it was not busy at ALL. We were the only ones being helped, when we got there the patient before us was already paying.

Mar.26 2022 I am forever grateful for my care at Joya hospital in Puerto Vallarta. I was very sick and required 2 emergency surgeries. The Team of 7 Doctors were professional, caring and reacted very quickly to safe my life. I was in hospital 10 to 12 days . Dr. Marianna Esteva went beyond our expectations. Nurse Sarita was the best.Forever grateful. Kathryn Hendriks

Excellent! We had excellent service and treatment for one in our party that suffer a Cardiac Event, remained comatose for several days and then left this life. The entire time we were keep up to date with two or more briefings by the attending physical who spoke excellent english. I like most was skeptical as we were in a forgiven country but our fears were laid aside my the excellent staff at La Hoya. It is true that they require cash/credit card up front for services. This is a result of people skipping the country and never paying their bills. There is a women on staff (Pam) who will help anyone with insurance claims. We were very pleased with her and the entire staff I give them a five star rating. And I hope if your reading this your results are positive.
