"For many years native San Franciscans, transplants, and tourists have been pleased and surprised to spot a polished brass plaque on a beautiful little graystone building on Sacramento across from Lafayette Park that reads: “This house, built in 1881, was once occupied by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.” It looks like an appropriate residence for the doctor who invented Sherlock Holmes. But a little research reveals that the author never actually lived there. He merely visited one of its occupants, Dr. Abrams, and probably only for a few hours, at that, in 1923, during a San Francisco stop on a U.S. lecture tour. Conan Doyle and his wife were staying at the Clift Hotel, where there is no plaque in evidence. Note to the disappointed: The address 221B Baker Street didn't exist when Conan Doyle housed Sherlock Holmes there. But nevertheless you can visit it today." -SFWeekly May 28th, 2008

This Beaux Arts building was designed by architect Mel I. Schwartz for Dr. Albert Abrams and built in 1921. A plaque on the front of the building asserts that "this house, built in 1881, was once occupied by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle." The consensus is that the house was built in 1920 or 1921, not 1881, and that Sir Arthur never occupied it. The creator of Sherlock Holmes did visit San Francisco in 1923 and may have dropped in to visit Dr. Abrams.

It’s a plaque. Probably, the Internet says, not correct in it’s statement. Hardly a monument. But if you’re in the area anyway, why not drive by?

Funny reading the reviews regarding the statement of facts on the the marker. Currently the large green plant is also growing and covering us the words making it even harder to appreciate what is stated.
