As far as I understand it's more of a mausoleum than a temple and that a temple is below it on the hill. Beautiful detailed wood designs and painting. The most intricate historical building I've seen so far. Definitely recommended to plan a trip here. Easy to reach by bus but you have to climb uphill a bit.

It wasn't mentioned, anywhere in English, that the main mausoleum, Date Masamune, was closed for renovation. Big letdown. Other parts of the park was a peaceful and serene walk. Have walking legs ready, some slopes to get to the entrance and steps to overcome. If only, during the restoration, they have have the boulder steps narrower, the builders and now the visitors, would step up more easily 😅.

Informative and impressive; reconstructions of the original buildings seem to preserve many of the features. Small museum shows off some of the burial treasures recovered during excavations preceding reconstruction, but more information on Date Masamune’s life (and the Date clan) in English would have been appreciated.

It's a rebuilt one, Tang or Song dynasty influenced style temple to be exact. Crazy that in the past, when boss/master past away, his employees follows him to an end. I mean, get a life dude.

A must visit site in Sendai. The beautiful and decorative mausoleums of the Date Family are truly awe inspiring. The grounds are peaceful and shady. Don’t miss the small museum that displays original and replica items from the burial sites that were excavated after the sites were destroyed in World War II. You can take a taxi or drive to the site. Pay the entrance fee at the gate. A fair number of stairs and not handicapped accessible.

A historical place to learn about date masamune & other history. Sadly, the zuihoden temple is currently under renovation until 30th March 2023. But overall it’s a calm historical place where there are a lot of tress surround. If you love history, I recommend you this place.

If you are looking for spots of taking fall foliage pictures near Sendai, this is not the place. We wasted both the money and long walking of being there.

The place is beautiful yet historical. But it is very small complex in such “not-really-strategic” area. There is bus around, but still we need to go through uphill to reach the place. And where you arrived, well except the beautiful nature view around, again, the monument and historical places are in very small area.

Quite nice (but not mandatory) You need to walk a bit uphill to get there but to me it was worth it. Unlike many other places i visited in Japan the buildings are very colorful. And globally it’s a good escape from the city since you’re surrounded by nature. Historical texts are also in english which gives you some interesting reading. (And have a look to the nearby Zuihoji temple, it has a nice court/garden)

This place is in such a nice setting all around, you can get a taxi straight to the Temple though if the weather is nice it's absolutely worth walking to it. Once you get there its a small fee to get in though they will provide you an information pamphlet which are available in a range of languages and the place itself looks so nice.

Very beautiful temple on the hill. Its about 30 mins walk from Sendai station.(google map somehow took me to the route through cemetery in the back ,like the hill behind apartment buildings. I thought I was lost ! Then I realize there is another straight way when we walk out the otherside which there is a road for the car) Ticket office is at entrance. Reasonable price. Peaceful place. FYI: Alot of steps to get up the hill to get there. Cobblestone walkway. And then you have to walk down too. So make sure you have good knees and wear comfortable shoes.

Zuihōden Temple is located on the west side of Sendai city. Visitors can easily reach it by the LOOPLE Bus. It is where the daimyo, Date Masamune, rests eternally. Unlike typical Japanese temples, Zuihōden stands out with its unique design. Its main theme blends black and gold, but what catches the eye are the vibrant colors that adorn the temple. This design has been applied to other similar temples within the area which houses the remains of Masamune’s son and grandson. If you want to understand more about Date family, there is a small museum right next to the main temple. The museum displays the personal artifacts belong to the Date family. Please note that the entry fee of the temple is 570JPY. Highly recommended for those interested in Japanese history or want to explore more about Sendai.

Had a quick visit to the famous temple dedicated for the Date Family in the morning before I had to leave to Sendai Airport and I was glad I did so. Recommend this place to all of you out there.

Very peaceful area with lovely stone walking paths between the historical shrines and burial mausoleum of Date Masamune and his relatives. Lovely photo opportunities of memorials as well nature. Walked up from Sendai Station and was an easy 25 minutes. Lots of others caught the public bus up to the foot of the hill. There is parking Iot if you wish to drive. Cafes around the place for coffee and refreshments. Entry was very reasonable, about 600 yen from memory for entry ticket. Lovely big trees and beautifully looked after shrines. Lots of history about Date and his family. Well worth a visit.

Another great sight to visit in Sendai. Zuihōden Temple is just in the middle of nature. You have to buy tickets though. It's only 570yen. It's reasonable enough for me.

There are couple of temples on the hill and old of them are incredibly beautiful. You can hop on the loop bus from Sendai station. The admission fee is 570 yen.

Lot of stairs so no good for disabled or old people. Colourful shrine in a wonderful wooded area. Tickets on the gate. Part of the loop bus tour.

Very serene and peaceful place. It's too bad that these were rebuilt and not the original. Be warned that the slope up is steep.

Lovely walk thru the woods. There are a few local guides in the area who are willing to share their massive amount of knowledge in English. Really informative.

This historic location is situated in a forested area, offering a serene and comfortable environment that is ideal for exploring while learning about history. However, it is important to note that the location is elevated and requires climbing a significant number of stairs. Therefore, it may not be suitable for individuals who have difficulty with stairs.

This is a memorial with beautiful mausoleums for the Date clans of three generations. The earthquake on March 16th, 2022 gave big damages here in Sendai. Here Garden Stone Lanterns had fallen down everywhere.

The mausoleums were very ornate and colorful. Beautiful grounds, including a park leading through cedar trees and hydrangeas.

Our first stop on the Loople Sendai, Zuihōden is a likely destination when exploring Sendai. And deservedly so. An interesting complex as a whole, the focal point being the mausoleum itself. Usual entry fee applies, however be sure to present your Loople Pass for a discount. Plenty of stairs and inclines, so be sure to wear decent walking shoes.

This is worth the entrance fee especially when cherry blossoms are in flower. We were initially underwhelmed but as we progressed through the forest past the public toilets the experience became more magical. The lovey old trees perched majestically around the reconstructed mausoleums of the sons. There are many stairs but they are not overly steep.there are bamboo walking sticks free to use if you so need. Taxis were waiting at bottom of hill for those too relaxed or exhausted to walk home. Plenty of English information provided on sign posts throughout. One of the nicest places in Sendai.

Fantastic, it is really fantastic!! Besides the temples are beautiful, the scene of natural is gorgeous but silent, so beautiful!!! If you are planning to have any trip in Sendai, this place must be one of the spot you take a visit.

Zuihoden (瑞鳳殿, Zuihōden) is the mausoleum of Date Masamune, one of the most powerful feudal lords of the Edo Period (1603-1868). Masamune was the first in a long line of Date lords to rule over Sendai from Aoba Castle. His son and grandson, Date Tadamune and Date Tsunamune, are entombed in nearby mausoleums, while other descendants are laid to rest in less elaborate graves and tombs. Zuihoden was designed in the ornate style of the Momoyama Period. It features intricate woodwork and a rich variety of vivid colors. Masamune's son and grandson are entombed in smaller mausoleums designed in the same style. Massive cedar trees surround the paths in the area and are meant to symbolize the long history of the Date clan. A museum beside the Zuihoden main building shows some of the personal artifacts of the Date family and even some specimens of their bones and hair.

Easiest way to get here would be from the Loople bus stop, with a short hill to the top. Was relaxed and not too many people so nice opportunity to get away from crowds. As other people mentioned there are some English translations available at most of the buildings outside. The ticket you buy also allows you to enter a small museum where they display replicas of items recovered from the archaeological area around the mausoleum. Here I found the lack of English translations unfortunate most items only list a basic English description together with a more detailed Japanese paragraph. Still worth the visit and would recommend it if you have 1-2 hours available.

Entry fee of 570 yen for the main compound, as well as the museum within it. If you're a foreigner who isn't too interested in Sendai and Date Masamune in particular, then you might not be too interested. The normal goshuin is 200 yen, but the special one available in 2022 is 300 yen. You'll have to affix the date onto your goshuin by yourself, so do take note.
