I had an incredibly disappointing experience at this place that used to be my go-to spot for ordering cakes for special occasions. Something has definitely changed because there were several issues that made it a terrible experience: 1) The service was extremely unpleasant, 2) The cake was undercooked (please refer to the attached pictures), and 3) There was unnecessary stress due to a lack of communication. It was my daughter's 10th birthday, and I was filled with excitement as I emailed the owner, Manal, to entrust her with creating the special birthday cake. This was the first time in six years that I was celebrating my daughter's birthday with her, and it held great significance for us. Unfortunately, it seemed like just another cake to the shop, but for us, it was a truly momentous occasion. I had placed my order weeks in advance and happily paid the amount they requested over the phone. The pick-up date and time were confirmed, and I usually never leave things until the last moment. I even followed up multiple times to ensure that everything was on track and as ordered. I take full responsibility for trusting that they knew what they were doing, simply because I had been a loyal customer. On the day of pick-up, I arrived on time only to be treated poorly by the receptionist, who seemed unaware of my order. My heart started racing when she couldn't find the cake, and it took her 15 minutes to locate it. To my surprise, she then informed me that they were waiting for me to bring the cake toppers. I honestly didn't realize I had to bring them, and if they were "waiting," they should have called me to clarify since they never mentioned when I should bring the toppers. The receptionist called the store manager, who rudely spoke to me while facing away from the customers. Another staff member, who was responsible for finishing the cake, even had the audacity to call me crazy. I experienced the worst customer service, undeserved anxiety on my daughter's birthday, and the inconvenience of having to rush to Kroger to get the toppers before the guests arrived. Additionally, the cake itself was stodgy and undercooked (please see the attached pictures). They didn’t even finish the spelling of “birthday” properly!!! I have made the decision that I will never return to this place again, and I cannot recommend them for any special occasion.

The crowd is excited about the treats. I was not impressed with any of the cakes I tried... I went with a group and we all technically sampled each others slices... we picked our pieces based on appearance and name, one friend loves the chocolate chocolate cake and suggested we all give this place a try. I will just say, the decor was cute, the cakes were nice to look at, and the customers view into the baking experience is a nice touch. But the cake was seriously lacking. It was dense, tight and dry... I would almost say dehydrated. I have never had that experience with cakes. I will also add the name, For the Love of Sugar is slightly miss leading... none of the cakes we tried were sweet... my friends suggestion of the chocolate cake, was probably the best, but I will say she loves dark chocolate, and it was definitely dark, slightly bitter and lacking the sweet for me, but tolerable. The carrot cake, banana cake, and two others I sampled were a strong pass for me. I did try a macaroon, and they were pretty good. There was a seriously long line and the staff was super nice and dealt with the crowd well. 🤔10 = great; 1= NOT great Decor: 10 Customer service: 10 Cakes: 3 Macaroons: 8 Trendy: 10 Will I go back: 1 😉(if my dark chocolate cake loving friend wants to go back, I will ride with her, but I will pass on a purchase)

The pictures don't do this cake any justice this cake is horrible hard like Play-Doh very disappointing the cakes at Kroger's that only cost $12 tastes better than this $45 cake waited 2 months for this very disappointing for my fiance 50th birthday cake I definitely have to redo this cake over from another bakery. The icing taste like pure butter not even sweet this must be a vegan cake because it has no flavor I didn't ask for a vegan cake I really don't know what the rave is all about their cakes are not good I recommend going to another bakery. Unfortunately you have to give at least one star but the cake presentation I guess deserves one star taste-wise a one out of a hundred. The name of the business is For the Love of sugar hello where is the sugar did you forget to put some in this cake ?

I knew that For the Love of Sugar made delicious vegan cakes, so it was not a difficult decision to hire them to make our wedding cake! What we didn't expect was how beautiful the cake would be! It was absolutely stunning. Our guests loved it, too (and didn't even realize it was vegan!).

Thank you, Manuel. She genuinely cares for customers and the community. She makes it a priority that her customer are taken care of and always remembers them. Some of my best friends have Celiac disease, others are vegan, and then I have dietary restrictions also. There is always something for someone and she never disappoints! My grandpa who just turned 95 loves the cake here and I cannot wait to go back and get a slice for him. The desserts always put a smile on his face when I surprise him :) Make it a top priority to stop here and indulge in homemade desserts. For the Love of Sugar is truly a gem of the Motor City. Support local!

One of the best bakery/coffee shops I have been to! Manal is really sweet and warm like her cookies.. I have been visiting this place since 2018 driving all the way for 30mins- really worth it! I adore the decor, it shows how much though they put-in. When you walk into the store take a moment to look around and you’ll notice everything is in frames- like each one of their cakes is like an art. For me personally- this place is inspirational. -For the Love of this store!

Beautiful establishment, I was greeted with a warm welcome. I chose the chocolate cake which I feel was not real sweet, I’d suggest eating ice cream with it. I also purchased the chocolate/white chocolate cake and a raspberry chocolate ice cream. The ice cream was phenomenal a must try.

Very unique interior with lots of chandelier and light. It’s bright, music was relaxing middle eastern pop folk. We took coffee and a cheesecake. Coffee could be warmer, even though we asked for “extra hot”. But service was friendly and nice.

A good number of vegan/non-dairy options which is definitely hard to find in a bakery. Macaroons were flavorful but definitely had the texture like they’d been sitting out for a while. Cake was good, not too sweet or heavy, definitely moist. Cute bakery spot, if they’re making items you can watch as you eat, the kitchen has windows. Indoor and outdoor available.

The best sweets in Michigan hands down!!! The shop is clean, desserts are delicious and of course the staff is amazing. I order my custom cakes from here and they do an amazing job! If you happen to go there make sure u try the cinnamon bun and macaroons they are delicious!👍🏻 I would highly recommend this place!!!!!!

Omg so good. They even have gluten-free, vegan options! My best friend got the cookie butter roll and it should definitely be illegal. Can’t remember the last time I tasted a dessert so delicious. Staff is really great too.

I am over the TOP in love with this bakery. It never falls short of PURE HEAVEN in your mouth. I love how diverse and wonderful the staff is especially the manger Tiff! I purchased a two tier beautiful cake for my sister's baby shower. The cake's details was very spot on to the image that I sent! The cake was absolutely amazing! Definitely worth the $300 that I paid for it!😁 If you are looking for a delicious moist cake this is the place!

I ordered my cake for my birthday with them and I got two flavors triple berry and strawberry short cake. I got my kids to help sample just in case I didn’t like the flavors. I never had anything from them before my kids LOVED them all! I saw some reviews on how some people stated it was dry but I was asked if I would like my cake warmed up before even getting the cake as you could tell they keep the cakes cooled to keep them fresh. The texture was moist and you could tell before eating the slices! Thank you guys for the mystery shopping/review experience! The customer service was great! My son even loved it he stayed the cashier was very nice! I can’t wait to get my birthday cake when the time comes!

Wonderful vegan options, great for people with allergies. I got to try my first macaroon today, and they did not disappoint. The bakery is very beautifully decorated, with inside and outside seating, and the staff is very kind. The person who helped us was patient while we looked over everything, and offered to warm up our selections to room temperature. Just a very welcoming atmosphere, definitely give it a try!

I can't recommend this place enough!! They do SUCH incredible work -- not only for my wedding and creating the perfect cake based on my vision, but also every time I visit the bakery! Their cakes are out of this world and so flavorful and unique. Every single person who's shared feedback about our cake has raved about it. We got the Triple Berry Vanilla Bean Cake -- highly recommend that, or literally any other of their cakes. The photo with more flowers was my inspiration (which had too much floral IMO) and the design team followed through with absolute perfection! Thank you SOOO much, Manal and team! Can't wait to stop by every chance I get and eat more of your cake, macaroons, and lattes!

Got the fruity pebbles rainbow cake slice to go. It was good. Could use a little more punch on the flavour profile. Midtown's a great area to walk around with a pastry. A number of bakeries in the area.

For the Love of Sugar provided our wedding cake, along with assorted mini cookies and brownies for our wedding dessert. All was very reasonably and competitively priced. Designing the cake was smooth and simple, and we were provided great insight along the way on design, servings, and more. On the day of our wedding, we were so overwhelmed and happy with how it turned out - it was prettier than we even imagined! And last but DEFINITELY not least, their cake is DELICIOUS. It is most definitely not forgettable, bland, dry wedding cake, it is so tasty and moist. We heard nothing but positive things from all of our guests! Would most definitely recommend for your events! :)

I had a great experience with For the Love of Sugar for my sons birthday cake! At first I was nervous it seemed like it took a little long to respond to my cake inquiry so I did call twice to make sure I could get in. Once I had my order confirmed with the owner everything else went great. Pricing is expensive but the design, flavor, and moistness of the cake was amazing! Honestly it was one of the best cakes I've had in a while. The cashier was nice as well when I came to pick up. The shop is really cute as well and in a nice location as well. I definitely recommend.

Manal and team did a fantastic job with our wedding cake. We got so many compliments on how beautiful it was. Manal was also very easy to work with throughout the entire process! Highly recommend.

This review is very overdue, but we bought a wedding cake from this bakery in June, and we couldn't have been more happy! Manal was very flexible which helped us keep costs down; we had a beautifully designed cutting cake and 3 undecorated kitchen cakes, all different flavors. Our guests raved about the cakes, and sadly there weren't any leftovers for us to take home, aside from the cutting cake. I would definitely recommend this business for any special event, or just go by their shop and grab a slice!
