Came here to try the houba miso yaki and it did not disappoint. The reviews here were great, and the locals said to try it out. The beef was so tender and delicious, and the miso was amazing. The sweet was a great deal for 2000 yen. The restaurant has a great vibe and feels like you’re stepping back in time. Great experience and the owners were wonderful.

Food: ☆☆☆☆☆ We ordered the BBQ dishes. The beef is very good and the premium beef is worth a try. The fried tofu is with crispy skin after you grilled it and it is mouthwatering and a must to try. Environment: ☆☆☆☆☆ Excellent. The house has been more than 100 years old and the dining ambience is really satisfying. Hospitality: ☆☆☆☆☆ Excellent. The shop owner even helped us to grille a little while we were eating. And they speak good command of English compared to many other Japanese, at least sufficient for basic communications and they are very friendly.

Kyoya is located around the areas of takayama's old town. It's a perfect place to eat your hida beef. The ambience is just fabulous with that ancient Japanese feel. Everything here looks old and bbq food users charcoal. Price is not the cheapest but definitely not the highest either. You can choose from a range. There is a variety in the menu, so if you can't eat beef, there are even other stuff to fill your stomach. Service is fast even tho they may be forever full. Ohh... reservations will be highly encouraged if you don't want to b disappointed. They don't hesitate to turn away customers, esp when they are running full. Food wise however, I feel it's just another beefy place. So really..., If you come here, its to enjoy the place surroundings. Owner, Mr Naoki is a cheerful and sociable person. Talks well in Eng too.

Great place for traditional food and Hida meat. The floor seating area near the main walkway is rather cramped so if you are overweight or lack mobility you should ask them for a chair table.

Very kind host and a good-sized, tasty meal. We shared a set meal and it was more than enough.

Great food and a very nice atmosphere. We ordered a Hida Beef and a Takayama Delicacy meal set. The staff were kind and helpful. Would recommend getting a reservation. We had our hotel call and book for us.

This restaurant located in an old house has loads of atmosphere and is priced a bit less than comparable restaurants we visited in Takayama. A few of the tables, with traditional tatami-mat seating, have charcoal grills where you cook your own dinner items, including Hida beef. The remainder of the tables receive electric grills for cooking. We didn't know this in advance when we asked our hotel to make a reservation. My guess is that the charcoal-grilled foods have more flavor than the foods cooked on an electric grill, like we had. If you prefer to sit in a Western-style chair, opt for the electric-grill tables. But if you want to soak up all the atmosphere and flavor, I'd recommend requesting a table with a real charcoal grill. It's absolutely necessary to reserve. Even when we were there in November, the place was packed and people without reservations were turned away. Some English spoken.

We were looking for a nice lunch spot to try Hida beef after a long morning of walking around touring the sights. I saw this restaurant mentioned in a review for a nearby shrine and was intrigued by the reviewer’s enthusiastic recommendation. The restaurant is cozy and the service was super friendly. We came right after the lunch rush and lucked out on getting a table with the DIY coal grill. The restaurant has English menus and the wait staff all spoke excellent English. Our’s even visited our home city in the states and made a funny topical joke about it. The menu is diverse and you can order both ala carte, as well as set menus if you’re feeling indecisive. We went with the Hoba Miso set and ordered ala carte items of the prime Hiba beef, shitake mushrooms, prawns, and cold soba. For drinks we tried their dry hot sake and their homemade plum wine (Umeshu). The latter was awesome and way better than your standard Choya. Super smooth with a nice subtle floral aftertaste. I make my own at home and I’m astounded by how much more delicate and flavorful theirs is in comparison. Definitely a must try! The food was great. All the ingredients were fresh and high quality. I noticed their soba noodles had variance in their width, suggesting they were hand cut. The beef was excellent. Tender with a nice beef flavor and the accompanying dipping sauce really tied it all together. Quick note: Hida beef is pretty fatty. For best results you want to grill it to at least medium, so the fat is properly rendered and diffused in the meat. It’s the same with high quality Kobe beef. Some of the one-star reviews mentioned the beef was chewy and I’m certain it was because they undercooked it. The bill for the two of us was under ¥9000 yen. Amazing value for the price!

Wow so delicious. English menu and very friendly English speaking staff. Got the prime hida beef that is so tender and melts in your mouth. Prawns were very fresh. Soba was nice and chewy. Everything was great. You must try their homemade umeshu. I wish I could buy a whole jug. The meal was not expensive at all either.

Wow. A real experience. Service was great- the waitress grilled the delicious Hida beef on miso right in front of me. Prices were reasonable too (great set for 2200 yen) and the interior beautiful. I went at 1 for lunch on a weekday in early December with no reservation and was promptly seated

Great Takayama food in a traditional and cozy restaurant. The miso beef and yakiniku were amazing. The pork cutlet was also nice and tender.

Get the Hida beef and umeshu ! It’s not too near the hotels / train station but can still get crowded however they will accommodate as long as there are available seats!

Wanted to try the Hida beef dishes here based on reviews and it did not disappoint. We went for early dinner at about 6pm on a weekday and didn't have to wait for a table. The dishes were served quite quickly. A nice restaurant offering a good variety of dishes.

Restaurant ambience made me feel like I time-travelled back to early Japanese years. The authenticity of the place is on point. 5-star rating is not enough for this place as the food did not disappoint! I tried their highest grade of Hida beef, and I must say that I loved Hida beef more than Kobe beef. You can also taste the freshness of all the raw foods I ate. The tastes are all indescribable. A little pricey but I did not mind because the place and food are all worth the money I paid for.

Reserve on the online system for this restaurant 3 weeks before i arrived japan. They finally doubled confirmed my reservation 3 days before i went to the restaurant. The hida beef was so good, and with traditional served with the “leaf”, but indeed i rather want to bbq it to taste the original favor. Staff were too busy and won’t stay one more second, but they are passionate in our few second convo 😂

The Hida beef is extremely tasty! The staff is very nice and helpful. We were lucky to arrive early since they were all booked out with reservations later on that day. We would definitely come again~

This place lived up the the good reviews We had the Hida 150 gram steak, seafood and Takayama assorted veggies. So yummy despite high price point. Food was good including the service. Making reservations online was easy using Google Translate. I liked the ambience and the simplicity of the food. I really have no negatives. Wish you all have a good experience at this place. I do recommend ordering individual items versus a set of you are not adventurous. There are many pickled and fermented items you may or may not like.

This 160 year old farmers residence was converted into a Hida beef restaurant 40 years ago. The ambience is amazing with super high beamed ceilings and lots of local items. You grill the beef over wood charcoal right at your table. Be sure to ask about their local specialities too. We had a mushroom soup that had numerous types of local mountain mushrooms and was great on a bit of a cold night.

Great Hida beef and local delicacies. The restaurant is located in a 19th century traditional Japanese house. The owners are very friendly and accommodating. Most of the restaurant in the area serves premium Hida beef. In Kyoya, they also have fresh river fish from the area. I ordered a fish set and asked the owner to top up with Hida beef in the miso grill and they fulfill all my requests. The house brew plum wine is excellent and must try during summer time.

Good Japanese style restaurant. Hida beef cooked on the charcoal is really good. The staffs are nice. All dishes are a little bit salty, especially the luxury Hida beef with miso rice.

Great atmosphere & service. The A5 hida beef was good, fatty & full of flavour. A must try place to dine in if you're ever in Takayama.

Amazing hida beef. Highly recommend this place if you are in Takayama. The food is the best I've had so far. It's a great experience. Book in advance if you can as it tends to be fully booked at night.

this place is very cosy no rush to order, no rush to eat, all the staff is very knowledgeable and attentive to my needs (ice water, extra fried onions, how to grill) excellent place to have a meal with loved ones and friends.. Need to do reservations as i have seen a few couples and 1 group being turned away… 5 stars

We chose this place for dinner because it seems that when you’re in Takayama, you need to try their Hida beef. This looked like the perfect place! My husband and I rarely eat beef, but we really wanted to try this because it is such a local specialty and the descriptions sounded so good – melt in your mouth tender. We ordered the hida beef luxury set menu and the miso set menu with a cold local dry sake. The sake was nice and came in a fun glass. The food also came quite quickly and the people working here were very nice and accommodating. We were really excited to try the beef. The set menu included beef with the miso on the hoba leaf, and a few pieces of both thin and thicker cuts that we could grill ourselves. Our waitress came over and helped us prepare the beef with the miso on the leaf – it was cooking over a separate cooker. She let us know when it was ready. It tasted pretty good and the flavor of the miso was nice. I enjoyed the miso with the rice. The other cuts of meat, in our opinion, were nothing special. I’m really sorry to say that! We found them to be pretty chewy and similar to a hamburger taste. That’s not a bad thing… but they were definitely not what we were expecting and they were all far from melt in your mouth tender. We tried cooking them in multiple ways to make sure that we weren’t messing it up. We even asked the waitress how long we should cook them for. We found the restaurant ambiance to be very lovely and we really enjoyed the hoba miso with vegetables. The people working here were very kind and attentive. We also enjoyed the hoba miso set menu. The beef, however, was not for us, and that’s ok.

I went with higher expectations, maybe I should have had more beef. I came here because someone recommended it for the dish I wanted to try. It's my first time having that so I have no point of reference.

Cozy traditional restaurant that serves really good Hida beef. Make sure to reserve seats in advance as they tend to be fully booked. We didn’t have reservation but luckily there’s a space at the counter.

We have the Hida beef on Houba miso set meal. Dining ambience is traditional and it’s an amazing experience. Food and beef are truly delicious! Came here before they opened for business at 11am and no waiting queue!

Excellent and reasonably priced Hida Beef. Nice traditional Japanese setting. Remember to make your reservations or you can try your luck at around 5pm before the crowd comes.

🫤 Don't bother with this place, it is overrated. Parking outside and toilets inside. Seems very clean and the food was actually really good, but the service was slow and at exactly 3pm we were yelled at (and so we're other people), to get out as they were closing. We arrived at 2:15, took 10 minutes...
