Amazing location with unique rotemburo. The main attraction here is the “yari” bath, a medium sized mixed rotemburo perched on a ledge beside the river. Sitting in this bath enables you to see the flowing river and value. A truly unique experience that you can’t see at many other places in Japan. Amenities: 3/5. Overall lacking many modern amenities. Outdoor change rooms are very basic (not showers and only swing doors). Onsen: 5/5. Excellent and unique outdoor onsens. Also have 4 private onsens that you can use as a guest of the hotel. Each are fun and different. Best onsen is the “yari” onsen, which has mixed bathing and women must wear a towel (which is provided). Room: 3/5. Basic. No shower in the room, and it is fairly small. Food: 4/5. Great local produce. A lot of food. Quality of cooking was above average. Not Kyoto kaiseki standards but good enough for this area. Had the Hida beef special and it was a lot of beef. Hospitality: 5/5. Excellent hospitality. Mochi-pounding in the mornings (don’t be late or you’ll miss it). It is announced in Japanese so foreigners tend to miss this. Owner / host walked us to our car. Amasake available in the central hearth in the afternoons. Free tea and coffee. Would return just for the “yari” bath. A truly uni and special bath. Would have been magical in the winter. Went in May and it was still excellent.

Amazing ryokan, remotely located next to a river. Very cozy authentic atmosphere. Great staff and cozy rooms with soft futon so you sleep very well. Onsen have views on the mountains and food is served in private rooms. Kaiseki style menus were fantastic. Can be reached easily via Nohi bus stop 58

This review is for day trip spa only. Only 2 out of 9 hot springs were allowed for day spa use. The larger one of the two was dirty with very little fresh water influx and no view whatsoever. The smaller one was clean, but fresh water input was also abysmal. We expected much better onsen from such a high end ryokan, but was surprised at the average at best quality of the hot springs. If you are willing to pay for nice interior decorations and the atmosphere, this place will be worth visiting.

We hired the second most expensive suite with a private hot spring but the private hot spring was not hot enough on a day in late February 2018. That night was about 0 degree C to minus 2 degree C. This was most disappointing for we paid a higher price for the suite. The public hot springs were good though but food was average.

Absolutely great traditional Ryokan. It’s remote in the mountains though can be easily reached with Nohi Bus to Shinhotaka Ropeway (stop 58). Ryokan offers 7 outside Onsen, 2 of them are mixed and have great views on the mountains, forest and river. Kaiseki menu is very delicious and is served in private rooms on the floor. Staff is really attentive. Rooms are Japanese and western style. In the Japanese rooms you sleep on very comfortable futon beds. The Ryokan is decorated really nice and it feels very cost. Overall an amazing experience. Would definitely come again!

Amazing stay. While it may seem pricey, the quality of the dinner and breakfast served is excellent. Onsens are almost empty most of the time, even for mixed baths. One of the best places I have stayed in Japan.

Calm and composed place. The place is well maintained and the staff is very friendly. The crowd is less post covid but the views of Japanese alps and mountains are amazing.

The best onsen I have ever been!! The scenery was marvelous, the food was so fresh and classic, and the people here were so nice and friendly. We enjoyed so much that we had made a decision what we are going to bring our family to come visit again and again.

Very nice and relaxed place to stay. The staff is helpfull and kind and the room was very comfortable. Beautiful onsen: two shared onsen (women can wear some sort of towel in these onsen) and some private onsen. Dinner was quite an experience but everything tasted amazing!

Good but the Onsen area it’s a little tired and rundown, The area around the property is beautiful.

This is the best hot spring Japanese hotel where I have been so far. Only 15 rooms but many out door hot springs. Very quiet and nice traditional Japanese meals including Hida beef. The room size is big enough for family but this hotel is more suitable for adult travelers. You can see Mochituki (Mochi pounding) at 9:00 am. This hotel staffs do not show artificial smile but they are not moody. Probably this area people are like this. They said they have staffs who can understand English.

I stayed here for my birthday during my 2.5 week trip to Japan. Our room was clean with a view of the river. You could hear the river from our room and it was so soothing. The staff was kind and attentive. And the food was some of the best we had in Japan! We were sad that we had to miss the mochi demonstration, but I would have loved to have stayed for it. The hot springs were amazing! The pool with a view of the river was incredible. I went in the morning to bath there since it is women only from 7-9am. I did not want to do mixed bathing but there were lots of private options.

Good hotel, good service, and very beautiful scenery. However, the water from the onsen is quite a simple/ ordinary type of carbonic water only if you are onsenholic like me. There will be better water choices outside. However, if we put away the "ppwerfullness" of the water, other things are great. We selected the best menu from the hotel and the beef was so good. Everything on the menu is of the best quality you can get from a restaurant. The room is clean, quiet, and gets a decent view of the river. An extraordinary local to relax.
