One of the most moving exhibitions I’ve seen lately. It is R200 for entry, which was more expensive than some others considering they displayed only 3 artists, but the collections were curated exceptionally and the gallery-level descriptions were the best I’ve ever read. I don’t know who is writing their summaries/introductions, but that person has clearly found their calling. If you’re in time for the Alexis Preller exhibition (Nov. 2023-Nov. 2024), I HIGHLY recommend going.

Great modern art exhibition. It's R200 for over 25's and R100 for 24 and under. The actual museum is housed on the ground floor, first floor and outside. This is great for kids and budding artists

Overpriced and badly curated, especially the garden! Pieces feel as though they were just dropped wherever, like they are expensive lawn ornaments instead of artworks. No descriptions for any of the pieces. Bad placement for viewing. Seemingly random selection, some were taken out of collections and thus are missing the context of the rest of the works within it. I get the impression that little care was taken and the garden was just designed to "look pretty". Really very disappointing with the whole experience. The inside galleries fared a little better, although the curation was also sub-par. Numerous spelling mistakes and somewhat random placement of the artworks. Descriptions of pieces that were in a different room even. Overall not worth the R180 entrance fee, this place feels like a for-profit tourist trap instead of the art museum it claims to be.

An unforgettable experience! Loved the restaurant food and setting. The gallery and sculpture garden are both foods for the soul... A breathtaking walk through the (originally) wetland garden. Highly recommended.

The restaurant boasts an absolutely perfect atmosphere that's amplified by the stunning use of glass, as well as the impressive artwork and beautiful landscape. The ambiance is truly one of a kind and sets the perfect mood for an enjoyable dining experience.

What a beautiful afternoon spent in the gardens and the restaurant. The menu had a wide range of dishes to choose from and the staff were so friendly😀 and pleasant. The view from outside is just the perfect setting for a relaxing afternoon and the art exhibitions were beautiful. A must visit.

Awesome museum! We only did the 1st floor exhibits and they were very interesting! Definitely going back! Gift shop was great! Also, the restaurant on-site was very chill. Great service and food!

The Museum is not far from town and is not expensive (I got my annual card for less than 300R), surprisingly it wasn't too crowded for a Saturday. I enjoyed the visit but, I was expecting to see more contemporary paintings. It was still interesting to see all the sides of the museum. The part that I enjoyed the most was the garden outside with the different sculptures. It's worth it :)

I have wanted to visit the art Foundation for a while and was not disappointed. The exhibitions are well-curated and the collections are very impressive. I have visited sculpture gardens all over the world and this one compares well. The highlight was watching a family of moorhens in the wetland. The landscape design is clearly contributing to biodiversity.

Didn’t visit the museum but the restaurant next door. Food was amazing. Good selection of wines. And the garden at the back is well worth a walk through for the amazing statues and sculptures.

The current exhibitions, once again, are world class. The Preller should be seen by everyone. Probably South Africa’s most remarkable artistic in his range of provocative, tender and intriguing works. Themes that linger in the mind for days and draw one back to view the works again. Once again exceptionally well curated. Thank you all who brought this to us.

This is my best museum in Cape Town, they have spared nothing in making this art gallery beautiful, informative and so interesting. It's all about Africa, paintings, interactive, photography to sculptures! It's a great morning out! They have a superb sculpture garden that surprises you at every corner! We spent an hour walking around this wonderful gallery, the art is beautiful and displayed in a free flowing manner, as you walk in the lights flick on, its an excellent experience and I highly recommend you visit this on your next trip to Cape Town.

As I cruise into the downstairs parking the lights turn on for me and momentarily I feel like royalty. Stepping out into the Norval Foundation is a treat. The architecture is modern and functional- being an art museum amongst other things. I love the clean lines of this building. The galleries range in size and are always filled with exciting artists. The focus being Africa. Then there’s the Skotnes Restaurant that serves up a delicious menu and while you enjoy the flavours your gaze is mostly over the wetland and indigenous gardens. Here you can wander around and view plants and installations. Become a member and you’ll be invited to exhibition openings, musical evenings and other interesting events. It’s the place where I go alone to escape the humdrum or spend time with my family and friends.

Beautiful art gallery/museum. Arrived there when a exhibition called when rain clouds gather was on. It reminded me of my varsity days. Beautiful works on display. The highlight for me was the sculpture garden. The most beautiful was the one made out of rocks! But who am I kidding, they were all beautiful. There was even a sound installation, giving you those Rosswell vibes!

This is the only art gallery in Cape Town I find myself coming back to everytime they have a new exhibit. The staff is so amazing and the art is phenomenal. I love how they focus more on promoting black South africans too. The restaurant is beautiful too, the food is not too bad.

A Magnificent & Arresting Space ! The Norval Foundation is MUST see on your art tour of Cape Town ! The current exhibition ‘When Rain Cloud Gather’ a celebration of our African female art genius in the country is beyond moving - take your time - walk slowly - let it all sink in and then bask in the garden glory and celebrate the talent in our women. Highly recommend!

Regular exhibitions in the art gallery. A bar and open plan restaurant with panoramic views and outdoor seating. Pay for your parking ticket at the indoor kiosk or add it to your tab if you have a meal. Good food, wines and freshly squeezed juices available.

Interesting assembly of modern african art, paintings, documents and sculptures. A nice cafe to drink or eat something. A minus: Exept the cafe there is nowhere a place to sit down. About half an hour drive from the city center.

We attended a 60th birthday lunch in the restaurant- the new Grub and Vine. It was wonderful. All options on the 3 course menu were delicious, the terrace and view are delightful, and easy listening live music added to the overall enjoyment of our afternoon. Service was on point and the manager checked with our birthday girl regularly to make sure she was happy. Well done Grub and Vine!

I would love to give this absolutely beautiful garden a 5... but there was one thing that I thought was missing...they have gone though all the time and effort to plant and place all this beautiful fauna and flora yet there is no information on what plants they are. I personally feel that all that time put into making this an absolute gem of an outdoor art attraction, maybe they should think about putting up little signs to say what the different plants are... It could become the ultimate learning haven. 😃

Interesting art pieces. Informative and created awareness on a part of our history that was unknown to me. Took out a Membership card. The food at Skotnes Restaurant was a nice addition.

We went through a walk in their magnificent garden. It feels as though you can get lost in this lovely, indigenous garden where the art pieces greet you as you make your way through. Their restaurant has good coffee and we would certainly recommend the Norval Foundation for a unique experience. The art inside is also something to write home about! Take yourself on a well-deserved outing and relax.

Had a picnic there. Was pretty. Expensive though. But most things in Cape Town are. Would recommend if you have like an hour and a half to kill. There is some kind of art exhibit though but I never went. But would recommend all in all.

This stunning architectural monolith housing beautiful artwork to admire, is one way to spend you time in Cape Town. Set against the mountain as a backdrop it is testament to the beauty the city has to offer. Will be back to visit in future.

The setting is fantastic with a great view of the extensive gardens, however, the service was on the slow side. We needed to ask that our table be cleared. Food was fine, will revisit when we want to sip wine and enjoy a slow afternoon.

Wow! What an awesome n enriched cultural experience for our learners of Manenberg, whose not exposed to this type of calmness. It was an experience that will last with them for a long time. It really bears testimony to the fact that our environment does have an impact on our behaviour. They were in awe as to what they saw around them. Thank you very much. Easter Peak Primary School.

Beautiful morning spent at the gallery. The art is thought provoking and inspiring. I love how they are encouraging young people to appreciate art as something that shapes society.

  • 5/5 Ranulph 11 months ago on Google
I would recommend a visit. A thought provoking exhibition, followed by a chronological focus on one artist's work. Modern building making for comfortable viewing, albeit the ticket price is expensive likely making it inaccessible to many. There is also a beautiful sculpture garden which is worth a walk around. Lunch at the restaurant was also good.

A superb art gallery with wonderful lighting and to add to the experience, a marvelous indigenous and wetland garden where a superb collection of sculptures are kept. With an entry fee of R160 for a single visit, it is better value to get a years admission for R250 per person whereby you would have the opportunity to see approximately 10 annual exhibitions. What a wonderful couple of hours spent. Next time we have to experience the restaurant as well.

I went to the Skotnes resturant and art museum - beautiful scenery and atmosphere. Nestled between the wonderful and serene mountains of Tokai. It was was airy and spacious, had a wonderful time. Be aware that it is a family friendly resturant so there will be kids (some louder than others :). But other than that, *chef's kiss to the whole experience!

I don't understand why 70% of the gallery space is reserved for Jackson Hlungani's unrefined work. His pieces had neither artistic direction nor craftsmanship. But my, ow my... once you step into the garden, a magical world of talent and wonder unfolds. **one of my favourite pieces from the garden**

This is a relatively new institution in Cape Town and I'm afraid it still has a bit of a "start-up" feel about it although obviously masses of money have already been thrown at the project and it's very smart. I visited for the first time today but I bought annual tickets because I know I'll be back. The institute is at an instant disadvantage from the point of view of competition because it has glorious Kirstenbosch just around the corner, but if Norval can find a niche to complement Kirstenbosch, it would only be to the benefit of the whole of the Cape. I agree with the comment about labelling the flora for educational purposes - although of course, Kirstenbosch was there first and they've done it well. The sculptures were a horror show. They could have done better with a collection of secondhand shop dummies from Woolworths. The pink abortion absolutely has to go as a matter of extreme urgency. I have already put a photo of that one and my comments up on Twitter - in fact, I did it while I was there, it's that urgent. It's made of fibreglass. It's flammable (I'm not offering any prizes by the way - that would constitute incitement to commit a crime). I want to see the art upstairs though - didn't have time today. If I don't report back on the art upstairs in a few weeks time, will someone please nag me.
