The food is traditional Vienna cuisine and is actually very good, the service on the other hand is disgusting. We watched them turn away multiple people who were tourists only to turn around and sit people who were local. Our waiter was nothing but rude to us and we had to literally wave him down 4 times just to get the bill. When it did come he sad the tax wasn’t included (it was) and that it was extra on top of the total. Then he said there is a service charge (not on the bill) which when questioned actually ended up being the tip (which we were not going to pay based on how he treated us). He literally towered over me till I said I’m not paying you a tip, call the police if you want. Needless to say unless your a local stay the hell away from this pre war mindset disgrace of an establishment.

Wow, just wow. Time stopped here sometime early 1900s and they have a very genuine / unchanged interior. Cellphones are not allowed (there is a payphone) and people have made it a thing to sit and read their newspapers in peace. Good service (albeit a bit prompt), excellent coffee and fantastic live music if you visit Sunday afternoon. A must see in Vienna.

A very authentic place, with the atmosphere of the old cafés and a really good price despite being in the center. They have a very complete lunch menu for 8.5E. We didn't get there in time to order this menu so we ordered another option they have, a 12.50E menu. The dish was good and the service was correct and fast. I recommend it.

A lovely cafe behind the Hofburg palace, offering a nice selection of sweets as well as coffee. Staff were very warm and friendly and spoke English well. It’s a great place to take a break and plan your next move after seeing the sights in the area.

They let us in the café (and gave us a table) with a company of 5 and a 2-month old baby. First of all one waiter said that we could not just take place like that, this while another waiter gave us the table. He was annoyed and asked who let us in en left us. Then the baby started crying, the staff came up and told us that she wasn't allowed to cry. When we prepared her bottle of milk (it was an attempt to keep her still), they told us it was not acceptable to take our own drink with us to a café while we have ordered drinks for 5 people. Of course a 2-month old baby is not gonna drink soda or coffee?! They were very rude. It is okay if you don't want kids in your business, but please don't give us a table to sit and then be so rude and humiliate us. Every waiter looked also very sad, like they did not like to work there. Please put signs on your door that baby's are not welcome.

this is very traditional place. As i was said it's open from 1930s. Here you can see people reading newspapers, it's some kind of tradition. The waiter was little bit rough. There is no English menu.

What a shame… I highly recommended Bräunerhof to a friend, mainly due to the good food. I warned her about the harsh waiters, but this friend is such a sweet person, I never thought they would be able to treat her so badly!!! The waiters were JUST horrible to her. Where in the world a waiter imposes how much a client leaves as tip?? While one waiter tells her how much she has to tip (more than 20%?!?! Shouldn’t be HER choice?) the other one just listened and said nothing. Then, after paying the imposed super inflated tip, she asked for a bit more hot water and he wanted to charge her more for it!!! Unbelievable!! Very very ashamed for this treatment… I won’t NEVER again recommend Bräunerhof to anyone!! Great job in keeping up with the tradition of maintaining clients away…

First came here 10 years ago and wanted to repeat. Many, many locals who clearly come each day. We booked ahead and I think that helped as the place was full later on. I had the daily lunch special, superb deep fried blood sausage, potato and sauerkraut. Trust me, it was very tasty. The wife had a nice schnitzel and salad. Efficient waiter.

You Viennese should be ashamed of places like this that drive people with a different culture away. This bar is cash only, illegal in many European countries. When we asked to pay by card, the waiter replied rudely no. Not having much cash available, we paid 10 euros for banknotes and 5 for coins. The waiter told us 'don't come back' I don't even understand what our mistake was. I don't know how coins are seen in Austrian culture but certainly rudeness sets you apart.

Stopped in and enjoyed a meal here. As others have mentioned, it feels like you are stepping back in time to an older Vienna. The service is fast and brusque - the waiters do speak some english but menu is in German. Clearly not too keen on tourists. Food was tasty (we had the Turkey and Viennerschnittzel as well as lovely desserts). It is cash only and not particularly cheap (check your bill). We really enjoyed the ambience, once we got seats - it is a place for locals to come and read the papers while sipping a coffee and having a cake. Avoid the Toilets!

A really authentic, local, non touristy coffee house with a quiet, peaceful ambience- unlike overpriced, noisy, unfriendly places with fed up waiters! I loved it here, it doesn't disappoint if you want a more genuine, rustic cafe experience.

Traditional Viennese cafe and restaurant which kept the nice atmosphere. A plus for the interiour desing and architecture. Unfriendly waiter, we did not see the (small) sign at the door that it is not allowed to take pictures, cake was dry and food oily

Used to be a nice place, we went there to have lunch, they offered us the lunch menu, beef or pork, outside the pork was noted for 8.50 EUR, we ended up paying 16.50 EUR for a tiny portion of beef and noodles. Complete Ripoff, on top of that i ordered a small soda, they charged me for a big one. If you value getting your moneys worth, I urge you to go somewhere else.

The Only Issue: The Customer At Café Bräunerhof in Vienna, unfriendliness seems to be part of the service. Right from the entrance, the welcome is cold: families with children are turned away without a valid reason, a simple request for tap water is denied, and groups are left without seating despite the café being half-empty. The staff is not just rude but sometimes aggressive and disrespectful, tarnishing the charm of what could be a classic Viennese café atmosphere. The problems continue throughout the experience: spilled coffee, dirty toilets, and a payment policy that feels outdated in today's world. Even the most patient visitors are either ignored or rudely asked to leave. In short, Café Bräunerhof fails to embody the essence of Viennese café culture, damaging not only its own reputation but also that of Vienna with its unwelcoming attitude. A visit? Definitely not recommended.

Fantastic value for money, menu is in German because it’s traditional and not set up for tourists. The waiters are efficient and may seem rude or impolite but please remember that this is actually Viennese culture. We spoke a bit of German and they were very pleased that we made an effort. Live traditional music playing too. Was like stepping into a Time Machine :)

Came here for the strudel especially, which was good but nothing exceptional. The main meals were ok but you can get much better elsewhere for only slightly higher prices. The Sachertorte was disappointingly dry and tasted like it had been standing around for a while. Waiters were quite impatient but this is part of the traditional experience. Atmosphere very authentic.

(Translated by Google) Underground. Unfriendly staff, you don't feel like a guest but as welcome as rats in a kitchen. I had Guglhupf - absolutely tasteless and dust-dry, my husband Sachertorte, which was also really not a highlight. Coffee was lukewarm, but otherwise okay. Overall, absolutely not worth the money. That we wanted to pay was ignored by waiter 1 without comment and annoyed by waiter 2 with "2 minutes". The cafe also has the flair of a train station hall from the 1960s. There is plenty of worthwhile gastronomy in Vienna! (Original) Unterirdisch.

We always stop off for a coffee and a light Lunch. The food on menu is very typical Austrian we like the sausages with Sauerkraut and potatoes with mustard. They have home made type soups...various cakes like Apple strudel. Newspapers in wooden frames hat and coat stands the entire decor is like going back to the 1940s or 50s. Old memorabilia pictures and photos Waiters with white shirts Bow ties leather money bags they are very much on the ball and quick. It's close to the Sissy palace and horse drawn carriages David Grant. London...😎

Simple and elegant Viennese café. Beautiful interior and tasty food (lunch or teatime). Can be a bit overrun by tourists and busy. Otherwise, it feels like being in a different epoch!

Service wasn't pleasant at all. Only cash, no credit card, no wifi, hot inside compared to the outside. But even with the "bad", the place was respectful of the diners privacy, and appearance of the restaurant. But because of the experience I won't be returning there. But they will indeed be the first place, and who knows of the only place where you put pancakes strips into a soup... I also did appriciate the fact that at least one of the workers had great English speaking skills, and managed to guide us through the menu.

Avoid this cafe, rude and greedy waiters!! I was there with a friend and they served us three coffees instead of two and refused to take one back. The Apfelstrudel was served cold and a fork was dirty. The waiter claimed we had ordered three coffees for two people and told us to pay three. I heard his older colleague say to him, "why don't you just kick them out?" The waiter finally also cheated with the bill we paid. If you want to be treated respectfully as a guest, choose another cafe.

Short version- ditto on sharp and rude wait staff. We just happened upon this café on our walk home tonight and we stopped in for a glass of wine. The ambiance was so nice and a genuine period piece (not interior design trying to make itself look classic) that I took a quick, non flash, pic of the entry. You would think I was a scavenger attacking an animal's young! I was swooped down on by a waiter and reprimanded, and not in a nice way. Good lord. The wine was okay as was the price, but while Viennese wait staff are not known for their friendliness this was out of line.

It's a coffee house like the Hawelka, only smaller and with more cake choices. Cash only! It's the genuine look of a Viennese coffee house, with the benches, the decor and the newspapers in the wicker holders. A place to slow down and rest your feet for a bit. Excellent coffee, here called Mocca. That's an espresso, not a drink with chocolate.

Café Bräunerhof is definitely one of the most important cafés for the German-speaking post-war literary scene. Author Thomas Bernhard used to come here regularly, one reason being that they do have an EXCELLENT international selection of newspapers, quite possibly the best in town, except in August when attendance is low. Visit Café Bräunerhof during the week outside of lunchtime hours, and you’ll most likely find a seat. On Saturdays, there’s live music with a small orchestra playing classical music, and the place is consequently packed. The food is okay, and the coffee, which used to be subpar, has definitely improved. The staff tends to consist of the classic “grumpy Viennese waiter” type, and in the summer it can get very hot without AC. Still…well, how can I put it… I absolutely LOVE this place!

Ah - the classic Viennese coffee house! ? It does not get any more authentic than that. The interior, the waiters and of course, the other patrons. Come in, (behave yourself) and feel transported back in time, when literates would gather here or sit and think in silence, over a warm cup of delicious, roasted coffee. If you are lucky, you can enjoy a classic Vienna trio playing live, just as it were a few decades ago. Complete your stay with a heart-warming desert or warm yourself up with a clear spirit. If you happen to be lucky and get seated by the window, you can marvel at the carriages going by, making it even harder not to get nostalgic. Enjoy your mini time travel!

Approached with trepidation due to reviews of discrimination against tourists. My experience on a Wednesday afternoon: quick and brisk service while google translating my way through the menu. Average coffee and strudel, however great coffeehouse atmosphere. Spent an hour reading a book on my phone and people watching. TLDR; Adopt the brusque attitudes of the waiters and do your thing. Can go for the Viennese experience but not essential for your trip.

The service was fast and the waiter was nice. It's a traditional cafe and we enjoyed the atmosphere. There were some comments here saying that they didn't give a receipt and that they charge a service fee which didn't happen with us or the table next to us. We paid 39,40 for two beers, two schnitzels with salad and roast potatoes. For us it was a little bit overpriced, but the food was good nonetheless

This is my favourite authentic Café in Vienna, I used to visit it daily 30 years ago, it hasn't changed, the waiters are refreshingly old fashioned Viennese waiters, you have to charm and bully them into a resemblance of politeness. Please don't ever change!! Food is great, Strudels are proper Viennese, the place itself is inspiring, just to think of all the famous artists who met there. I met Master Hridlicka there several times, just wonderful!!
