Outstanding museum , art gallery & cafe. Absolutely loads of interesting things relating to Whitby & surrounding area. Personally I found it endlessly fascinating. All set in a lovely park, a bit of a hidden gem. Highly recommended a visit.

The park is well kept and the museum looks interesting. We didn't go inside as it was about to close 4pm sharp.

What you would expect from a museum great fossils and nice to see the hand of glory. The tearoom was very busy and probably understaffed the instant coffee was a disappointment. Overall well worth a visit if it's your thing

Lovely museum. There's plenty to see. Fossils, lots of taxidermy, which is very interesting if you haven't seen certain species up close. The shipping room is fascinating, with information on Captain Cook voyages and life at sea, including his findings. Lots of models. History of Whitby Abbey plus models. You can easily spend a few hours here. Lovely staff and great tea room. Well worth a visit. In walking distance of Whitby harbour, located in Pannett Park.

Wonderful variety, great value, and a lovely gift shop. Also appreciate that they have a cloakroom! Now closed for the winter - we were the last visitors for 2023.

A local gem! This is certainly not a neglected, dusty, forgotten provincial museum, it is thoughtfully presented and has some great facilities to boot. There is something for everyone, lots of curiosity cabinets, I really enjoyed the jet collection, Abbey exhibition, art gallery and the fossils, but the new exhibition on Scoresby is also well done. Set in a lovely park, all in all a good 2 hours!

The museum is located within Pannett Park and has no car park so parking has to be on the surrounding roads. A few Disabled parking spaces tho are available behind the museum. Admission is £7 for adults which gives unlimited access for 12months but there is no reduction for Seniors. Despite these minor difficulties the museum is well worth a visit. Beautiful wooden display cases are crammed full of artefacts that are an eclectic mix of fascinating fossils to South Sea Island ceremonial dress. All showing a direct link to Whitby. There are no hands on activities for children but plenty of artefacts to keep them interested. It is the museum's 200th anniversary this year and there is a new area celebrating this. They deserve support.

Set in Pannett Park, a pretty little park close to Whitby's harbour and train station this is a great museum. It has a lot packed into its attractive interior. The entrance leads initially to a free art gallery and then the art gallery's gift shop. After the gallery gift shop is the museum ticket entrance and gift shop and museum. Tickets are annual passes and very reasonably priced for a museum with such a wide variety of exhibits. Stairs/lift lead to toilets and a tea room and a temporary exhibition section which currently exhibits 20th century wedding dresses. Rather like a sailor of old would bring all manner of objects home with him, this museum houses and an extraordinary variety of artefacts from far-flung places. There are gorgeous pieces of Japanese arms/armour, whilst carved wooden pieces from India/Africa rub shoulders with coral exhibits, models of all sorts and various silver/pewter or pottery objects from the Far East/Middle East or Russia etc. There are fossils, geological displays, beautiful or curious jet pieces. And ornate industrial era hair ornaments and personal items rub shoulders with scary looking medical instruments and a barometer based on the electro magnetic response of leeches. Displays of ancient bronze/iron age and Roman finds are found close by curious looking toys and horse gear or industrial machinery models. Darker themed displays touch upon superstition, burglary, smuggling, piracy and greed. Some stories are told by the displays, e.g. a local tale of 19th century community discord pertaining to public rights of way, or exhibits of local craftsmanship and industry. Well worth a visit.

What a great little museum. Great for local fossils found with good background and interpretation. Also good displays regarding exploration in the Pacific from Whitby mm people and ships. Outstanding little café downstairs with great service and friendly staff. Only downside is that £7 for a small museum seems too much... Or it it me. I don't buy this one year ticket idea to hide a high price. However if you are visiting I would say it must be on your list for a visit.

Very interesting museum! Lots of things to see. My favorites were the lifesavers' stories and the fossil finds, but the doll house made for the daughter was remarkable as well. Worth price.

A huge, eclectic collection of fascinating artifacts that create a real sense of Whitby as a place. It's a must visit, and allow yourself lots of time to take it all in.

The Whitby Museum is such a unique place, filled to the brim with unique artifacts of new and old. The use of models, real life examples, and stories about each piece really painted a fascinating portrait about the history of Whitby, the citizens of Whitby, and even ties to the rest of the world from Whitby! Truly a fascinating place, I know those who love history, uniqueness, and reading can simply get lost in the treasure trove of information the Whitby Museum has to offer. And with a cheap entry fee valid for one year, there is no excuse not to go! It is a must visit for both tourists and residents alike!

Small old fashioned museum which took me back to Mt childhood. Exhibition gallery has more contemporary displays and the art gallery has a good display of the local school. Outstanding cakes in the cafe.

Full of wonderful exhibitions of whitby. You can watch a film which shows scenery of this beautiful place. Museum has a cafe and toilets. Museum is very clean and staff are friendly and helpful. Highly recommend this place if ever you make a visit to Whitby.

Best museum we had ever been. Extraordinary, interesting collection, good description. From the Stone Age to finds from Roman times, seafaring, insects, doll's houses and the history of Whitby. Highly interesting. We spent several hours and are looking forward to come back.

The Whitby Museum and it's art gallery is worth the visit for sure! The fossils from the beaches of Whitby and its surrounding areas are completely interesting, with part of it showing the animals that exist in the wild and even in the sea. They even feature a huge model map of Whitby which you can freely look at. Then they have their shipping museum part, which completely blows anyone away. I have always been amazed on the history of such voyages. They even include models of the ships and the famous battles on which each ship took part of. Just when you thought this museum couldn't include more, upstairs they feature wedding dresses worn by the Whitby folk and surrounding towns dating from centuries back. Their tea room is absolutely fantastic, with their food being out of this world, delicious and well worth the pay. They even have three rooms of galleries, one of which they are renovating, when I was there (a week ago). They do have public facilities and their hygiene is very high. They even keep the museum clean, which they are careful when cleaning. Then last but not least, they feature a gift shop for the young children to enjoy and buy fantastic books and art stuff. They even feature an art table near the animals part for the children to draw or colour in. Overall, I would recommend this outstanding place, with it's rather convenient tour bus stop just over the road from the museum. Plus it's only five minutes from the town centre and West Cliff attractions. I guarantee my return for sure!

Absolute beaut of a museum, such a lovely collection. Well laid out, instructing facts and friendly staff. Took our time walking around with a visit to the lovely tea rooms midway through. Thoroughly enjoyed our time here

We visited one afternoon whilst staying in Whitby. The museum is accessed through the art gallery and cost a very reasonable £6 per adult. My 10 year old was free. The entrance price included an Annual pass for unlimited returns over the next 12m. The museum was a treasure trove of artefacts all nestled in one main room, with several small exhibits off it. It was charming, full to the brim of interest and we discovered a lot about Whitby's varied history. My daughter and I spent a couple of hours exploring but could easily have stayed longer.

What a brilliant museum. Full of some fantastic exhibits. Fossils, coins, art, models, costumes something for everybody. The restaurant in the basement is a Real must. We have eaten in various restaurants in the local area and the food is easily comparable to the restaurant food. Coffee was proper coffee in a cafetiere. Staff were very friendly. Great couple of hours.

A very worthwhile place to visit. Full of fossils, Whitby history, and cabinets of interesting artefacts. We thought £7 was good value for the vast amount there is to see. It also allows unlimited entry for another year which is probably more beneficial to residents of the area or if you are a regular visitor. The Tea Room located downstairs was a gem. The staff were very friendly, sandwiches made to order with many more food choices on offer, all served on vintage crockery which added a nice touch.

What a wonderful museum! Heaps of fossils, historic artefacts, memorabilia from all over the world and oddities from private collections. It's one of the "old 19. century museums for the common people in the streets" with not too much information to read but lots of wonderful things to see. Very nice and helpful staff! We absolutely loved it and had the best time here. Highly recommended!!

Great visit, lots to see. Well organised and displayed. Nice break half way with tea and cake in the cafe. Loved the dolls house.

Amazing exhibits, so much to see. Loved the costume collection. Stayed for hours, still saw things on way out that I'd missed. Price includes return visit within a year. Also set in beautiful park/gardens and teashop. Highly recommended.

Some really interesting exhibits here - but having a 110 film cartridge on display, like the one I used in my first camera made me feel ancient! Cafe is good, and things for kids to do is a bonus when you've got a 3 year old with you.

An interesting museum, that has a very varied collection, the shipbuilding section and the whaling exhibits are of local interest, but there are some fascinating and unusual areas to browse too. There is also a picture gallery which is free to enter. There is a nice terrace to relax on with good views over Whitby.

Museums aren't usually our thing but we decided to visit here mainly because of the pouring rain and have to say, were pleasantly surprised by how much there was to see. £7 a head, which lasted us for the whole day, as there was so much of interest to see, plus the tickets are also valid for a whole year's visit if you are still in the area. Everything from local fossil hunting to dinosaur remains found locally to social history and beyond, to eclectic mix of exhibits from far and wide. Set in a pleasant park to wander around as well. A good find!

A small but wonderful museum. An excellent selection of exhibitions ranging from palaeontology to the only surviving example of a Hand of Glory. Well worth a visit if you're ever nearby.

Great exhibits of shipping, botany, wildlife and local history. There was a school visit going on and a boy aged about 9 or 10 very enthusiastically showed us where to go. Lovely cafe with friendly, helpful staff

This place is an absolute must for anyone seeking a compact museum crammed with the most interesting and wide ranging exhibits. With an emphasis on Whiby and it's history the museum has benefitted from well travelled local benefactors who have donated fascinating objects from all over the world. There is also a small gallery with local artists on display, some of the contemporary pictures are available for sale. At £7.00 entry this may seem pricey but worth every penny! The ticket allows you to revisit for up to a year.

This museum is a gem. The exhibits are mainly housed in beautiful wooden cabinets, which are immaculate, great rock and fossils, lots of local interest _ jet, lifeboats, fishing and whaling. A cornucopia of delights

A wonderfully eclectic collection of historical items from bronze and iron age to sailing and whaling to ecology, fossils, and Whitby history. Most interesting for all ages - there's something for everyone. The bright and airy cafe also does a mean pot of tea (Yorkshire of course!) As well as delicious cakes and scones. Well worth a visit. An added plus is the Art gallery at the front. Good value all round.
