Best places: Observation decks in Engaru, Japan

👍 We took a huge detour from our original route in order to follow a friends recommendation. Difficult to say anything about lake Mashu... the weather was so foggy and rainy, that we did not see anything from the lake at all. Nevertheless the drive there was stunning (until we reached the clouds :()....

👍👍 The observatory is built at 725 meters above sea level of Mt. Mokoto (Mokotoyama). It is a marvelous and popular viewing spot that tourists can look over Lake Kussharo or Mt. 👍 You can see the magnificent view of Lake Kussharo from a different angle than Bihoro Pass. It's not a place to come by force, but it's a little-known spot.

👍 Small place but you could spend an hour like minutes. We walked on the way to the tower but took a free shuttle bus service back to parking lot. Nice staffs, worth to explore at each floor, B level 8M. below the sea, 2nd floor for a short 4D movie and 3rd floor observation deck with free telescope.

😐 When I was there on October 2016, the stairs leading to the top of Sobakudai is partially damaged in a storm, resulting in less than ideal walk up to the observatory point.
