One of my best experiences whilst visiting Alexandria! We have a great tour guide. He’s an old lad usually by the entrance - clad in a suit and tie. Unfortunate he doesn’t use mobile gadgets else I would have shared his number. Now, back to the Catacombs review - these tombs are underground; carved into stone. From above you can never tell there are tombs underneath! Absolutely amazing. It’s a blend of Egyptian, Roman and Greek beliefs!

Unless you come with a tour guide, and depending on the guide, you might not get much learnings from the site. There aren’t many plaques with information. What is interesting is that this was a Roman temple built for a rich family, and it was build mixing ancient Egyptian with Roman. It is interesting. On the contrary to catacombs in Europe, it hasn’t any bones, just a crate with horse bones.

Burial chambers from the 2nd century and was considered one of the 7 wonders of the middle ages. The necropolis features many Greek archaeology and statues from the period of Alexander the Great, whom the city is named after. The circular staircase descends down 100ft, where the bodies were transported down the middle then stored in a morgue type chambers, carved from the sandstone bedrock. The area was lost under the earth only to be rediscovered in 1900 from a donkey falling into a crevasse. Several sarcophagus have been found with human and animal remains. The name means 'Mound of shards' after broken terra Cotta jars discovered, similar to Greek traditions of smashing plates at weddings.

Go down their mini tunnel. It was fun. Kids will definitely love to explore the tiny tunnel. Explore every aspect of this place and imagine how burials were booked before ones death...interesting!

It is a historical place, where various classes of mummies were preserved and found. The place is just maintained satisfactorily, however, is just another burial site of ancient egyptians. Unless you are an archeologist and have a thing for such sites, do visit but for normal tourists it may not look too fancy. The guides are good and will explain a lot about it but overall there are other places more historically important in Alexandria to visit.

The Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa is the best place to visit in Alexandria. The tombs were supposed to be built by a single wealthy Roman family, considered as one of the “Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages”. The tombs were built deep under the ground, has three levels of burial chambers around a spiral staircase. It has a large number of graves of human and animals. It has many figures carved on wall. A very unique experience visiting the place.

A quick trip to Catacombs, and we were not disappointed. We had an amazing tour guide who gave us a lot of the pre-history in the car on our way there. Known as one of the 7 ancient wonders and discovered by a donkey, we were very excited to see how vast it was. On arrival, we got tickets at the gate and walked right in. Staff at the gate were very friendly. Once in, we started our journey down (there were a lot of steps, so we will highly recommend comfortable shoes). The tombs were still in very good condition and lots of light everywhere, which made it less scary. Would highly recommend you take some water with you as coming back up was a good cardio session. Won't recommend the Catacombs for anyone who is claustrophobic, but for everyone else, please visit if you are in Alexandria.

Another must-see place in Alexandria. Perhaps it is better to have a guide to explore the history throughout the centuries, but we did our homework, so we didn't have any. Definitely not for people with a wheelchair and everyone should be extra careful as the steps are steep and narrow. Only cards are accepted, and there are toilets on the site.

Pretty cool! The main attraction is the catacomb structure itself. Interesting to see the ancient burial complex. It's too bad that more Egyptians don't go see this place. It's one of those jewels that's not well known.

This place is so cool! 3 floors underneath the ground—dozens of burial spots and lots of halls. It felt like exploration. Definitely worth the stop!

Hard to find and from the outside doesn't seem like much but pay the fee and check it out. Definitely worth a visit. The stairs in the back lead to a big underground catacombs with lots to check out. Get some good pictures and probably takes 30-45minutes to see the whole thing. Bring a student ID if you want a discount.

Beautifulll place honestly 😍 The place is considered to be a graveyard for the romans. You go underground and explore them and there are a couple of graves above ground. However somehow the graves below the ground is cold i dont know how 😅 Either way definitely worth the visit it was so beautiful Also we took an uber there and couldnt get to the exact location. So he dropped us to a place nearby and had to walk for 10 minutes NOTE: make sure to wear something coverable as the place we walked through wasn’t the safest place to wear shorts or cuts

This was one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World. The location was discovered when a donkey fell through the access shaft. The architecture inside is a combination of Greco-Roman and Egyptian. Some of areas require low crawl to get to (see video). Overall a great place to visit in Alexandria.

It was my first time to visit this place. It's a nice place but can't be reached easily. I hope they install street signs to make people capable of reaching it easily. It makes me remember tomb raider game - the last revelation part in 1999. There was a stage of this game in catacombs.

One of the 7 wonders of the world, worth seeing. Multiple levels present with private and public burials. Roman- Egyptian architecture. Lowest level was under water for 300 years but now it's navigable as water is pumped out incessantly. Unique place to visit!

Very interesting and should be on your list while visiting Alexandria. They have added wooden steps to make it easier to navigate. Make sure to come with a guide if you want to learn the history.

The catacombs itself is a very interesting place. But you just enter and walk on your own, no information provided at all. The area around the catacombs is not clean and tidy. Considering the fact that it's one of the top ten things to do in Alexandria, it definitely needs an upgrade, proper clean-up and more information about the place.

A multi story underground building comprising of dozens of interlinked chambers with magnificent art work which are much easier to explore as compared to the narrow passageways of the Pyramids. Equally good and easy for all age groups.

Expensive entry and you will need a guide. They have cleared the water out now so can walk through more. Fascinating to see the mix of Egyptian and Roman history/religion coming together. It is empty so don't expect bones etc, except for Caracalla's horse bones. One of the main sites of Alexandria to visit.

What is extraordinary about this place is the mix of Ancient Egyptian, Ancient Roman and Ancient Greek all in one place. I liked exploring this place even though I'm not that into history.

Beautiful archaeological site where you can see the underground Catacombs and smell the incredible history! The only flaw like all sites in Egypt is the poor care. To visit

Was a small and manageable space, went with my son and it was quite impressive in terms of the sheer amount of graves in the single space and how they’ve dug them out was quite interesting. It’s a fair way out of the city centre and not advisable to go with an Uber as it took 20-30min to find one. Would suggest private driver or tour company.

A small sight with an interesting story about how it was discovered....by accident! Well preserved and with very different history than most other sights. Would recommend at least 2 hours if you want to immerse yourself otherwise 1 should be fine.

Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa - Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages, a place where the influences of Egyptian (Pharaonic), Greek (Hellenic) and Roman cultures are mixed. A must stop if you are visiting Alexandria. The site is from the 2nd century AD, very well preserved. An indescribable experience as you descend the circular stairs, and explore the tombs, enjoying ancient architecture and art. It is recommended to come early in the morning and avoid the crowds. One small note, from this location you can walk to Pompey's pillar, it's only about 10 minutes away.

his is what my travel diary said: the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa - historical archaeological necropolis consists of a series of Alexandrian tombs, statues and archaeological objects of the Pharaonic funeral cult with Hellenistic and early Imperial Roman influences - one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages - used as a burial chamber from the 2nd century to the 4th century, before being rediscovered in 1900 when a donkey accidentally fell into the access shaft

Cool place to visit if you are in Alexandria. It has multiple catacombs and some with afresco paintings still very vivid, considering the aggressive enrichment with high humidity in that area. 20 min is enough to see everything.

Mysterious place Wonder how all the rooms and tombs were carved in stone. Totally worth seeing. Not in a great neighbourhood, so take taxi or uber to the location itself which is well maintained and safe.

  • 5/5 Theresa H. 1 year ago on Google
I thought this was an excellent archaeological site and they have done a super job of making it accessible for tour groups. The location because of the small rooms is not for someone that is claustrophobic so be aware that you are entering an u dethroned d grave area. It was fascinating to see the art work inside on the walls also. We really thought it was worthwhile.

Embarking on a journey through time, the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa in Alexandria offer an awe-inspiring experience that transports visitors to the enigmatic world of ancient Egypt. As you descend into the depths of this underground burial site, you are greeted by dimly lit passageways adorned with intricate carvings and captivating designs, revealing a fusion of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman influences. Exploring the grand burial chambers and admiring the elaborate artwork, including the remarkable Hall of Caracalla, evokes a profound sense of wonder and respect for the skill and craftsmanship of civilizations long past. While the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa provide a fascinating glimpse into the past, it's worth noting that the space can feel a bit small, with limited access to certain areas due to ongoing preservation efforts. Nevertheless, this necessary measure ensures the longevity and protection of the site's fragile artifacts. The catacombs' collection of artifacts and knowledgeable guides provide further insights into the lives and customs of those interred here, making this an unmissable destination for history enthusiasts and anyone seeking to unravel the mysteries of ancient Egypt.

Not so impressive as others Catacombs that I have been, but it worth to visit them when you are in Alexandria. These catacombs are very well preserved. The artificial light is strong and it doesn’t give the atmosphere such a place should have. Furthermore there are rubbish around.

A great place to visit! I went there alone and very much enjoyed it; however, I would definitely recommend going with a tour guide since there is no one to show you around especially if you go down into the tombs. I almost got lost underground. Beware of the scammer police officer! I thought he was kind enough to show me around since I was alone but he demanded money and when I gave him some he demanded even more! I rushed through the place just to get rid of him.

These were very cool catacombs and had a lot more areas to explore than I expected. It was fairly cheap to go into them and they were not crawling with too many tourists. The descent was via a spiral staircase and there were not many people who seemed to have trouble getting in or out of the catacombs.

  • 5/5 Sherif M. 1 year ago on Google
Very nice to visit and many underground rooms that were used as tombs following the catacomb roman design. It is believed it was made one rich family and then many others got buried with them. Down they have a kind of air conditioning and there is good ventilation. The only problem is to reach the place as it is on a difficult District with so many narrow streets. If you have a car then better to park inside with little extra park fee

It's a wonderful experience however it's quite humid and dusty down beneath. Be sure to wear a mask, a group of us had some severe congestion and coughing later that evening after the experience.

I have visited this place one time and i don't regret. It was amazing to touch to ancient sarcophagi with hands. Also you can go the stairs down in the tower and come across constructions look like an old morgue. By the way, they are a lot of pieces of ancient columns. I was impressed when i found huge quantity of cacti. In my opinion, tourists should visit this place, if they are in Alexandria

If you're an adventurous fan of movies and a person who respects and values history, this is where you should spend your day. I'm overwhelmed by the strange mixture of old cultures (Egyptian, Greek, Roman). They are all twisted together to give us this beautiful place. You will find Horus beside Medusa, and Anubis dressed in Roman clothes. In the entrance you will find pieces of ancient statues, full sarcophagi, 3 main small tombs, the cistern and finally, the catacombs. The catacombs consist of 3 scary underground levels. Make sure to have one of a kind adventure down there, and get your torches ready. There is light from the sun right in the middle, as well as lighting in the hidden places, but if you really want to see every part of it, you need to get your own torch (phone light) to enjoy every area and go inside every place by yourself. I'm really proud of this place and hope to be visited and known by many tourists.
