The idol in the Dhakeswari temple in Dhaka at present is the original idol (Original) ঢাকেশ্বরী মন্দিরের ইতিহাস সম্পর্কে নানা কাহিনী প্রচলিত আছে। ধারণা করা হয় যে, সেন রাজবংশের রাজা বল্লাল সেন ১২শ শতাব্দীতে এটি প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন। তবে সেই সময়কার নির্মাণশৈলীর সাথে এর স্থাপত্যকলার মিল পাওয়া যায় না বলে অনেক ইতিহাসবিদ মনে করেন। কেউ কেউ দাবি করেন, ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশে মুসলমানদের আগমনের পূর্বে তথা সেন বংশের রাজত্বকালে বাংলার স্থাপত্যশিল্পে চুন-বালি মিশ্রণের ব্যবহার ছিল না। কিন্তু ঢাকেশ্বরী মন্দিরটি আগাগোড়া চুন-বালির গাঁথনিতে নির্মিত। যা বাংলার মুসলিম আমলেরই স্থাপত্যরীতির বৈশিষ্ট্য। বিভিন্ন সময়ে এই মন্দিরের গঠন ও স্থাপনার নানা ধরনের পরিবর্তন সাধন করা হয়েছে। ধারণা করা হয়, এটি ঢাকার আদি ও প্রথম মন্দির। হিন্দু ধর্মাবলম্বীরা মনে করেন, ঢাকেশ্বরী শব্দ থেকেই ঢাকা নামের উৎপত্তি। ঢাকেশ্বরী দেবী ঢাকা অধিষ্ঠাত্রী বা পৃষ্ঠপোষক দেবী। কিংবদন্তি অনুযায়ী, রাজা আদিসুর তার এক রানীকে বুড়িগঙ্গার এক জঙ্গলে নির্বাসন দেয়। জঙ্গলে রানী প্রসব করে পুত্র বল্লাল সেন কে। জঙ্গলেই বেড়ে ওঠে বল্লাল সেন। শৈশবে জঙ্গলের মধ্যে বল্লাল সেন একটি দেবী মূর্তি পান (মতান্তরে, রাজ ক্ষমতায় বসার পর এই জঙ্গলে তিনি মূর্তিটি পান)। বল্লাল সেন বিশ্বাস করতে শুরু করে জঙ্গলে সকল বিপদ-আপদ থেকে এই দেবী দুর্গাই তাকে রক্ষা করছে। পরে বল্লাল সেন রাজ ক্ষমতায় অসিন হলে তার জন্মস্থানে যেখানে দেবীর মূর্তি পেয়েছিলেন সেখানে একটি মন্দির প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন। মূর্তিটি জঙ্গলে ঢাকা অবস্থায় পেয়েছিলেন যায় বলে দেবীর নাম হয় ‘ঢাকা+ঈশ্বরী’ বা ‘ঢাকেশ্বরী’। মন্দিরটিও ‘ঢাকেশ্বরী মন্দির’ নামে পরিচিতি পায়। অপর কিংবদন্তি মতে, রাণী, রাজা বিজয় সেনের স্ত্রী স্নান করার জন্য লাঙ্গলবন্দ গিয়েছিলেন। ফিরে আসার সময় তিনি একটি পুত্রকে জন্ম দেন, যিনি বল্লাল সেন বলে পরিচিত হন। সিংহাসনে উঠার পর, বল্লাল সেন  তাঁর জন্মস্থানকে মহিমান্বিত করার জন্য এই মন্দিরটি নির্মাণ করেছিলেন। কিংবদন্তী যে বল্লাল সেন একবার জঙ্গলে আচ্ছাদিত দেবতার স্বপ্ন দেখেছিলেন। বল্লাল সেন সেখানে দেবীকে আবিষ্কৃত করেন এবং একটি মন্দির নির্মাণ করান, মূর্তিটি ঢাকা ছিল বলে ঢাকেশ্বরী নামকরণ হয়। আরেক প্রবাদ মতে, দেবী সতী দেহের একান্নটি খণ্ড বিচ্ছিন্ন হয়ে যে সব স্থানে পড়েছিল সে স্থানগুলো এক একটি পীঠস্থানে পরিণত হয়। সতী দেহ ছিন্ন হওয়ার পর তার কিরিটের ডাক (উজ্জ্বল গহনার অংশ) এই স্থানে পড়েছিল তাই এটা উপপীঠ। সেই ডাক থেকেই ঢাকেশ্বরী নামের উৎপত্তি হয়।[১] যতীন্দ্রমোহন রায় তার ঢাকা জেলার ইতিহাস গ্রন্থে বলেছেন: ভবিষ্য ব্রহ্মখন্ডে বলা হয়েছে, বৃদ্ধ গঙ্গাতটে বেদ বর্ষ সাহস্র ব্যত্যয়ে স্থাপিতব্যঞ্চ যবনৈ জাঙ্গিরং পতনং মহৎ। তত্র দেবী মহাকালী ঢক্কা বাদ্যপ্রিয়া সদাঃ গাস্যন্তি পত্তনং ঢক্কা সজ্ঞকং দেশবাসিনঃ। মানসিংহ ১৫৯৪-১৬০৬ সাল পর্যন্ত তিন দফায় বাংলার সুবেদার থাকাকালে মন্দিরটির জরাজীর্ণ অবস্থা দেখে এটির সংস্কারের ব্যবস্থা করেন। এসময় তিনি মন্দির প্রাঙ্গণে ৪টি শিবলিঙ্গ স্থাপন করেন ও তার পাশাপাশি চারটি শিবমন্দিরও নির্মাণ করেন। তবে মানসিংহই মন্দিটির সংস্কার করেছিলেন এমন সুনির্দিষ্ট কোনো প্রমাণ পাওয়া যায় না। এফ বি ব্রাডলী বার্ট ১৯০৬ সালে তার রোমান্স অব এ্যান ইস্টার্ণ ক্যাপিটেল নামক গ্রন্থে লিখেছেন- “বর্তমান মন্দিরটি ২০০ বছরের পুরনো ও ইস্ট ইন্ডিয়া কোম্পানির এক হিন্দু এজেন্ট এটি নির্মাণ করেন।”[২] এই মন্দিরের দেবী ঢাকেশ্বরীর আসল ৮০০ বছরের পুরোনো বিগ্রহটি কলকাতার কুমারটুলি অঞ্চলে দুর্গাচারণ স্ট্রিটের শ্রী শ্রী ঢাকেশ্বরী মাতার মন্দিরে রয়েছে। দেশ ভাগের সময় একে ঢাকা থেকে কলকাতায় এটিকে আনা হয়। দেশভাগ-পরবর্তী দাঙ্গার সময় সম্ভাব্য আক্রমণ এবং লুন্ঠনের হাত থেকে দেবীকে রক্ষা করতে ঢাকার মূল বিগ্রহটিকে গোপনে এবং দ্রুততার সঙ্গে ১৯৪৮-এ কলকাতায় নিয়ে এসেছিলেন রাজেন্দ্রকিশোর তিওয়ারি (মতান্তরে প্রহ্লাদকিশোর তিওয়ারি) এবং হরিহর চক্রবর্তী। বিশেষ একটি বিমানে ঢাকেশ্বরী আসল বিগ্রহটি কলকাতায় নিয়ে আসা হয়েছিল। কলকাতায় বিগ্রহটি আনার পর প্রথম দু'বছর হরচন্দ্র মল্লিক স্ট্রিটে দেবেন্দ্রনাথ চৌধুরির বাড়িতে দেবী পূজিতা হন। পরে ১৯৫০ নাগাদ ব্যাবসায়ী দেবেন্দ্রনাথ চৌধুরী ঢাকার অঞ্চলে দেবীর মন্দির নির্মাণ করে দেন ও প্রতিষ্ঠা করে দেবীর নিত্য সেবার জন্য কিছু দেবোত্তর সম্পত্তি দান করেছিলেন। মূল দেবী বিগ্রহের উচ্চতা দেড় ফুটার মতো, দেবীর দশ হাত, কাত্যানী মহিষাসুরমর্দিনী দুর্গা রূপেই তিনি অবস্থান করছেন। পাশে লক্ষী, সরস্বতী ও নিচে কার্তিক ও গণেশ। বাহন রূপে পশুরাজ সিংহ দন্ডায়মান যার ওপর দাঁড়িয়ে দেবী মহিষাসুরকে বধ করেছেন। মানসিংহ এই বিগ্রহ ঢাকায় প্রতিষ্ঠা করে আজমগড়ের এক তিওয়ারি পরিবারকে সেবায়েত নিযুক্ত করেছিলেন। ১৯৪৬ সালে সেই পরিবারের বংশধরেরাই কলকাতায় এসে পুনরায় সেবায়েত নিযুক্ত হন, এখনো তারাই দেবীর নিত্য সেবা করেন। বর্তমানে ঢাকার ঢাকেশ্বরী মন্দিরে থাকা বিগ্রহটি মূল মূর্তির
