Nice hostel with huge rooms. Very clean bed linen and bathrooms. In 5 Euro they give nice breakfast. Yea & Coffee is complimentary 24*7. The staff is friendly and helpful. Also very economic and near all the monuments.

I really liked this hostel. The location is very central and close to Berlin's main sightseeing spots. Reception is 24/7 and the common area is nice. The kitchen has everything and you can even cook. The only thing is what others complained about the noisy beds and it's true but overall it wasn't that bad

I booked seven nights in a large shared room for 48 people. The property's lack of transparency led me to unknowingly book one bed among 47 others in a dormitory, which I would have avoided if the information was clear. The picture of this room shows 12 bunk beds. They don’t have female-only dorms, which, by itself, shows a lack of empathy. After entering the room, I noticed that I was the only woman there, but the room was still quite empty, which gave me a little bit of comfort. At 9 pm, I was in my bed when a homeless person arrived and shared the same bunk as me. As a solo female traveler, I felt uncomfortable and unsafe given the situation I was. I requested to change rooms, willing to pay the difference, but the receptionist initially refused. After explaining my discomfort, the receptionist called the owner/ manager and he was extremely rude, claiming nothing could be done due to the hostel's policies and the New Year's week. Despite an available 4-bed room online, he insisted I conform to the hostel setting, stating that I was in a hostel and that's how things work. The lack of empathy and customer service disappoints me. I don't recommend this hostel for women and solo travelers, as the staff seems indifferent to guests' concerns and safety.

Where to begin... when we arrived to the hostel, the receptionist was rude and dismissive, and immediately double charged us, because he didn't realize we had booked it online despite us telling him multiple times. Annoying, but he apologized, and the man at the end was apologetic... so take that with a grain of salt. Although, the interior of the hostel is gross. We have been traveling across Europe, and this was the worst hostel we stayed in. The bathrooms smelled like urine and there was hair everywhere. Beds do not come with outlets nor lights, which at this point, is pretty unacceptable. (you had to share one outlet with your bunk mate)... If you're looking for the bare minimum, this is it, but I really would not recommend this stay to anyone. Each hostel we went to after, we continually discussed how worse Heart of Gold was compared to others. We really wanted to like it and it seemed to have good energy just overall extremely disappointed despite the high rating.

Summary: Adequate hostel, but BED BUGS, BED BUGS, and more BED BUGS!! I don’t know where to start with this hostel. they offer the basics, a bed with bathrooms and not much more for an incredibly high price, definitely not worth it. I booked it based on its reviews and was really looking forward to it. No tours, no crawls or activities. What a disappointment, but here’s what was worse than everything else. After waking up on the first night, I found a few red bumps on my arm and legs, thinking it was just mosquito bites I ignored them. Second days was much much worse! Dozens of red bumps that itch and many of them were 3 bumps in a straight line, which is indicative of bed bugs. My arms and legs were covered by them. I couldn’t even wear jeans it was so bad. By the last day, I couldn’t feel anything but itchiness, bed bug bites all over. I spoke with the night reception who seems to take the matter a little seriously and moved me into a new room. He said they will look for bed bugs ASAP. The morning reception was completely different. He said no they didn’t have any, but he said they looked for bed bugs but didn’t find anything. I asked if they would be able to at least wash my clothes to kill any of the bugs, which they did reluctantly, only to return my washed clothes still wet in a garbage bag. Thanks. What they don’t know is that I looked for bed bugs in the seams of the bed/mattress and pillows and found them before reporting to reception. If me, an untrained, professional that doesn’t even work in hospitality can find bed bugs, then they have a massive infestation. I returned to my original room with the bed bugs only to find the cleaners have already prepped the bed for a new customer. Cherry on top was the receptionist said it wasn’t the hostels fault… Well then, who’s fault is it? Your beds have bed bugs… So please, what ever you do, please please don’t stay here due to the bed humbugs and the risk of spreading bed bugs to your home. It is a nightmare.

Free tea and coffee! The reception is also always open which is handy and adds extra security. The rooms were basic but clean. The showers were slightly frustrating as you had to press the button to keep the water running every 20 seconds. The hostel has a good vibe

One of the most delightful experiences one can have, especially considering the price. This hostel is perfect for students or young explorers like me. The name “Heart of Gold Hostel” truly lives up to its reputation, thanks to its superb location right in the heart of Berlin. It offers a bar, a welcoming reception area, and plenty of cozy spots to work with 24/7 coffee and tea. The hostel comes alive at night with dramatic lighting that sets the mood. What sets this place apart is the incredibly friendly atmosphere; everyone speaks English as if you’re in the USA, not Germany. The design is impressive, and there’s even an outdoor area where you can relax and enjoy the fresh air. The rooms are truly clean, and for a small 10 € deposit, you get a locker key for added safety. Don’t forget to try their breakfast too; it’s a great way to start your day! (breakfast : 10€) In the end, it’s definitely worth a shot, and I can’t wait to return to this lovely hostel. Highly recommended!

Good location, decent basic clean room with shower. Not impressed in having to make and strip my own bed and bring down to reception. The 10 euro room card deposit, besides being unnecessary appeared to be an additional fee but was returned promptly. Why have it, for a 2c piece of plastic?

The hostel is located close to the metro and train station, has a very nice and cozy lobby, well-kept rooms, clean and fragrant bedding, large showers with hot water and tidy toilets. Besides, the service is very nice and friendly and the tea is very tasty, thank you for your hospitality! I hope to go back there :)

+ : The location is great, 2 mins walk to the metro station. The staff was nice, and check-in and check-out were easy. The place offers to store the luggage after check-out. The bed sheets were clean. - : Bathrooms haven't been cleaned properly in a very long time. The shower curtains and floors have been filthy. The beds were very noisy, making sounds anytime a person moved. The pillow was uncomfortable. No side table/chair to leave the stuff on, only small lockers and beds in a room.

Really nice hostel, very calm since it doesn't make events like pub crawls. I came with my uncle and some days he had to work which is why we chose this place. Bathrooms were clean enough but you should bring flip flops anyways. Rooms were also fine, you gotta make your own bed upon arrival. Cash deposit of €5 for keycard and €10 for lock if you don't have your own.

Nice place, love it. Two-bed rooms with shower make very special atmosphere. Good and very good music in bar. By the way I cry every time I come (don't know why) and every time staff was very patient and friendly with me.

Great location, unfortunately that was the only advantage. None of the lights worked in our room. Mattress and walls are thin. Bed frame is squeaky. Little to no vibes in the common areas. One of the person working there (a fat man) was incredibly rude to guests, chasing a guest out after checking out even though it’s raining. The place is not too expensive but I cannot recommend when there are plenty of other options.

Very rude reception staff, and rules unusual to anywhere else I’ve been to before. Such as no outside guests allowed upstairs even though the whole room had been booked out by one group (us). Wouldn’t even let us sign her in, which made no sense. Not enough toilets for the amount of beds and the lift was out of order for two days. The location was very good and the beds were generally comfortable. Big window in our room which was nice, but yeah. Overall vibe was not it.

Our stay was fine untill on our last day before check out the owner came into our room without asking and complained about the state of the room. Our room was fine and I needed to stay an extra night but because she stormed into our room without knocking I was then told we couldn’t stay an extra night. The staff are nice but the owner is a disgrace and very rude.

Digital lock of the room often does not work, you have to bring your bed sheet back to the reception yourself...so those make you feel inconvenient and other things are moderate. This won't be my choice for the next time

The hotel is at the heart of Berlin, every important places are close to it. Service is good enough and so are the rooms. If you don't really care about confort and only focus on this great location then you should decide to come here. The price is also very low so don't expect the best service or rooms. (Toilets are in the hallways outside of the bedrooms for instance but there's many so it's not a big deal)

The staff was really friendly with us but the rooms were extremely cold as well as they don't even have soap too the major problem is that they open the kitchen at 8:00. It's a major inconvenience for someone who booked the hostel to go to the work

came here for the first time. I made the reservation through the booking app. When registering they charge 10 euros, I don’t know for what service? the shower and toilet are common to several rooms and the shower and toilet are located together. If you want to go to the toilet, you have to wait for someone who is taking a shower. It is very uncomfortable. The key cards are very old, they barely open the door. you stand near the door like a thief for several minutes. The rooms are very cold. there is no heating at all. Are the owners making money out of thin air? the bed is in terrible condition, for the first half hour my whole body itched automatically from all the dirt

I've never had a problem here. The place looks great, the staff is absolutely lovely, and it's got a kitchen!! Fully equipped. I believe what we eat should be fully our choice and it seems like HoG does too! Thank you very much for caring!

Everything was great! The workers were very nice and talkative and the room was nice. The bar area downstairs was very nice to sit and relax in. The only problem for me was the shared toilet. Wasn't really clean. All the rest was amazing!

Spent the first couple nights in a room with no airflow (window was broken and would not open), and got severely ill in turn due to sick and smoking people in my dorm. Was refused to switch rooms at night because "trust me dude". Couple of dudes at the reception were exceptionally rude. Yeah we're in Berlin but grab your balls and do your job dawg. Was told I could not book online anymore because it annoys the receptionists. Did not make any exciting connections with guests. Kitchen was ok. Tea was cool. Location is fine. Showers cool.

wow. old staff and old people would like this kind of hostel. our leaving , they didn’t return our full deposit, booked for five people, three of us arrive and pay 50 advance for five people deposit, , make sure everyone pay one for each or else they make you repay again when ask for the key on arrive. And on the leave , don’t add up. Anyways , the hostel is a raciest place. Asian people are not welcome. The front desk say ok they unwelcome people book too many people and wasn’t sure who is who, and they make mistake who is on which room. Their own problem . So they ask us not to book again in this hostel, anyways, this place has a very stupid vide downstairs, and as hostel , you have to cross the bar to the kitchen , very discomfort. And the bar music mood is a horrible. I guess old staff and old people would like this kind of hostel. Best luck. The shower is a nightmare!!!

We expected more from this hostels reviews. The beds were comfortable, but in general it was very dirty, especially the bathroom and the showers. We used our flip flops to take a shower because of the dirt and also the sheets of the beds had stains on them. For what we paid it’s not worth it. If you’re looking for a one-night hostel or you’re in a rush you could go here, but we don’t recommend it.

Slept in the 8 bed mixed room for 30€/night during July, so super cheap. Room and bathrooms were clean, staff were very helpful and informative. Overall a real pleasant stay for such a cheap room. Everything big is within a 15 min tram/metro ride and theres a lot of good restaurants in the area. There are lockers in the rooms, but no lockers in the common area, only backpack chains.

If you are a traveler who is seeking for cheap, good service and freedom, Heart of Gold Hostel is just for you. The rooms are good and clean but the beds are very loudy. The staff are very helpfull and problem solver. They have free coffee and tea 7/24 in lobby. You can also use the kitchen freely. You can keep & lock your stuff, and can trust them. Location is also very good if you ask me. Unfortunately we couldn't attend to Halloween party, maybe next time. End of the day, I wanna visit there again. I hope I can.

We stayed in a room with 2 beds The place was very well located and the rooms were ok, at a reasonable price for the location. There were some amenities that we were not informed of and, although it is not mandatory, the extra effort would be worth extra stars. The bed was very noisy and there were people in the hallway until late speaking, walking with high heels, and the room had no sound isolation from the hallway. Although an average experience, I recommend staying there for the location.

Great location, 1 min walk away from metro. Located in a very nice area of Berlin. Staff are very nice and accommodating, the rooms and bathrooms are extremely clean. Despite the creaky beds, the facilities are very very nice. Great free tea and coffee with nice communal areas like kitchen, seating area and outdoor seating area. Would definitely recommend this hostel.

for the seven days I stayed here it was a wonderful time, the staff was friendly all the time. But when I lost my sweater i casually saw the same exact item wore by one of the receptionist and after a lot of chances I gave her to tell the truth she still pretended it was hers. The guy at the desk was really nice trying to solve the situation, but of course I couldn't get it back because she had it on

Sleeping and actually resting in a 38-people room is quite a challenge. Booking pictures don't show it. I've never heard such a squeaky bed! The staff is very helpful and informative. Kitchen is supplied but lacks basic condiments like oil or salt which is annoying. Free coffee and tea and the bar is a life saver

My stay in this hostel was mostly very positive. well-kept and comfortable rooms; friendly and helpful service staff, always ready to make guests feel welcome; very good location. However, the cleanliness of the shared bathrooms could have been better.

If I could give 0 starts I would. This place was horrible. Filthy rooms! Dirty floors, walls, beds, and the pillows stank! Lights are awful at night. Walls are so thin, people running screaming in the hallway at 02:00 knocking on doors! Unbelievably stressful night. When I complained how dirty the room was they gave me clean sheets and told me to wrap the pillow. One night for 180€, I was robbed blind.

The way the reservation is advertised can be misleading. We were a family of 4 and booked a 4 rooms in mixed dormitory. It was not mentioned that the room was a room for 8 persons to share a bathroom. I came there and requested for a refund because the room did not meet our expectation. But, they did not agree. So, I lost money for a service which I didn’t consume. The Heart of Gold insisted that they have mentioned a mega dorm but, still, from my point of view, this was not clear enough. I have stayed at other hostels which provided a better service. However, the hostel has always the final word because they didn’t find it unfair to take a customer’s money with no service.

The place is very ugly, from the outside it looks very good but everything is dirty…. the sheets, the bathrooms and the very uncomfortable beds…. very disgusting!!! They asked us for a deposit and they didn't return it to us because we didn't leave at check out time! Super bad because they never told us the departure time. There is a better one at one block… REGENERATOR BERLÍN MITTE and it cost the same. Much better, clean and beautiful place to stay. I recommend it!!!

A nice hostel. Even In the megadorm I was comfortable. Many staff members lovely and helpful. One staff member in particular was very rude. He seemed to have no problem picking on me and my friends. I observed him doing it to others. When you run a hostel in Berlin you should expect people coming home in the early morning from clubs. He continued to shake his head condescendingly and hush us even though we were being quiet. It was hard to be relaxed when he was watching constantly. I was sitting outside in the evening getting air with one friend barely talking and this staff member came out to tell us to go inside and be quiet. Keep in mind I was not talking. Then when I was in bed there were a bunch of men outside in the courtyard laughing loudly and shouting. For bare minimum it was okay.

Very basic rooms, clean, spacious, just missing some table with chairs and some hooks for jackets. Service ok, breakfast fine, but they could add boiled eggs for vegetarian and maybe some slices of tomatoes cucumber, lettuce etc. Location perfect, nice spot with many restaurants, close to other attractions

If you need a hostel in Berlin then I highly recommend this location! My favorite part about this place was the staff who were extraordinarily nice especially Peter, ( man who works midday to midnight shift), and ( man who works morning shift). The place is also located in a great part of the city that is close to Alexanderplatz, train stations, and much more. The rooms are also very well put together and the vibe of the location is just immaculate 🙌 Definitely stay at this amazing location

  • 3/5 Christopher A. 1 year ago on Google
The mega dorm of 16 people is cool and all, but completely garage when it doesn't actually get any cooler than the day time high. The room somehow maintains a temp of 75F~ while it is 60F outside, because the room had no AC, no ventilation, and no method of moving the air around at all. This is quite impressive, considering there are air ducts with fans imbedded all throughout the ceiling, along with 4 massive windows that never open more than 10 degrees such that a breeze is never allowed to develop. Do not come here if you are sensitive to temperature when you sleep.

The hostel is very well located nearby the historical spots of the city. Metro, tram and train station just a minutes walk. The mega dorm has 20 beds! The beds are comfy although there is no curtains so the light wakes you up early. Vibes and hostel overall are cool. There is no kitchen if you want to cook, so consider that (many takeaways around). Breakfast is good.

Cheap hostel so you get what you pay for, value for money, you don’t get a plug or light with each bed but it’s not the end of the world, friendly staff on reception and bar always happy to help, good price for beers and good selection, breakfast is worth it so fill your boots, bathrooms a little grimey but are cleaned every day so perfectly fine to use, cheap and cheerful hostel and lots of backpackers to meet, not that close to bars so if you’re looking to party a lot choose a different location but tram is easy enough to use to get around, like with all hostels bring and eye mask and earplugs to help with sleep, nice stay overall

The décor is based of the hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy and is full of Easter eggs. Lots of friendly people here and although the kitchen is closed due to renovations there is still a kettle +free teas and coffee, a toaster and a microwave. Showers could be cleaner and beds are a little creaky but over all it’s an alright place

Nice hostel with good vibe. Free coffee, has a bar with good vibe. The beds make a lot of noise. The receptionist is not very friendly. 10 EUR deposit for key card and bedsheets and you have make your own bed and bring the bed sheet to reception when you check out which is very funny and doesn't make sense 😂

Good hostel for people on a budget. We booked an entire room for 8 people, so I don't know about how it is when living with strangers. If you can do the same, do it for sure. Bring your own bathroom equipments! (towel, toothpaste, soap...) + Bring a LOCKER if you share a room with strangers The room for 8 was clean: clean beds, new bed sheets, clean floor, clean toilet/shower, clean windows. We also used the hostel shared bathrooms and they were also really clean (plus, they have a bathtub 🛁 😍) The room doors were decently secured with keycards The lobby was also really nice, they serve beer even after midnight (don't know until when but were stayed until 2AM once) Staff were friendly and speak great English Location is perfect with about 15 min walk from many interesting areas Would for sure go back 9/10

The bed was so squeaky that every time the person above me took a deep breath it was about as loud as a normal voice conversation. We both didn’t get a morning sleep 😂 but at least you get holed in place by the laid through mattress. There is no soap anywhere and sometimes toilet paper. The only thing that was really nice is that they have lockers, but you have to bring your own lock and the staff is really friendly. Be aware that you have to leave 10€ deposit for the keycard in CASH!

Hostel is nice if a little basic for the price. Wouldn't recommend the breakfast as seems to be pretty pricey for what you get. Great that they have a kitchen (which seems to be a dying thing in hostels), which helped save me a lot of money. Having said that, the prices here are pretty steep given lack of activities and fairly basic rooms. Staff pretty friendly and good amount of common space with good wifi which was handy. I think you could probably get a better value place in Berlin, but nice enough overall. Free tea and coffee is a great perk!

Overall, I had a great experience at the hostel. Definitely a much-upgraded version of a hostel, far superior to some of the less sophisticated London hostels I stayed in a decade ago. In general, everything is clean, the rooms and spaces are functional and the staff were friendly and helpful. Coffee and tea for FREE was a major surprise! It comes with a large kitchen space and you can actually cook if you want to. I stayed in the Mega Dorm. The only tiny element was that some of the lights didn't work and so only part of the space was lit. However, I was happy to pay less than usual and still located in the centre of Berlin! I prefer to pay less for a bed, which I only come back to sleep than paying more for a room that stays empty for the whole day! Finally, as a solo female traveller, I felt safe and secure at this mixed dorm environment!

i was a bit worried because of some negative reviews online, but for me the experience was great! i stayed for three nights in a room for 8. there are big lockers in the room, and you can borrow a key for 10 eu deposit. if you arrive earlier than checkin time, you can leave your suitcase (and lock it with a string). rooms and bathroom are clean, except some mold growing on walls and windows.
