There isn't a clearly marked entrance. The security guard at one of the entrances told us to go to the next gate. When we went to the next gate, it was closed. There was another security guard behind the gate so we asked him if we can see the mosque. He asked us where we were from, we said "United States." Then he opened the locked gate and let us in, making us wonder whether certain countries were off limits and if yes...which ones? We didn't pay an entrance fee or any "tips" for that matter. Everything was free, which was a pleasant surprise. No prayer was happening inside. Inside, women are given an underskirt and long blue robe over to wear over the skirt. The robe also has a cap that allows you to cover your hair. Again, it's free. No shoes allowed so you will be asked to take them off. Beautiful mosque!

Absolutely stunning old architecture... I saw it only on the outside on a stroll in Khan Al Khalili and it is very well lit externally and looks majestic. It will warrant a special visit during the day some other time.

The Al-Azhar Mosque, built between 359 and 361 AH (970 and 972 CE), is Egypt's most important and well-known mosque. For over a thousand years, it has served as both a mosque and a university. When Egypt was taken by Jawhar A-iqilli, the army chief of Al-Muizzulidn Allah, the first Fatimid Caliph in Egypt, it was founded with the goal of promoting the Shiite Doctrine. Al-Azhar currently teaches Islam according to Sunni doctrine. After the city of Cairo was founded, A-iqilli began construction on the Al-Azhar Mosque, which he finished. On the 7th Ramadan 361 AH /972 CE, it hosted the first Friday Prayer. As a result, it is the earliest mosque built in Cairo and the oldest Fatimid monument still standing.

As soon enter the Mosque from the southern gate, the old majestic high walls great you with the memories of thousands of Islamic Scholars and Sheikhs who passed these exact paths and learned in these spaces all over around you now. Al-Azhar Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Cairo and famed for its university known to be amongst the authorities on Sunni theology and Islamic law. The mosque has a large courtyard surrounded by arcades on three sides, one of which is the main prayer hall. One of the most distinctive features of the mosque is the double minaret that I’ve never seen anywhere else. To be honest, there’s not much to see in the mosque and I think you really need to be a believer to truly appreciate it.

For those passionate about the Islamic architecture, the Mosque of al-Azhar is a must see. Founded by the Fatimid conqueror Gawhar al-Siqilli in 970, it is currently a great mixture of styles and periods. For example, the dome above the prayer room was crafted around 1138, the qibla wall dates from the 14th century, Sultan Quaytbay added one of the minarets in 1475, the main façade is from 19th century, while the double arched gate of the main façade belongs to the mid-18th century. Briefly, the visitors can admire the Fatimid, Mameluke and Ottoman architectural features blended together in majestic building. It is important to mention that the mosque-madrasa complex of al-Azhar is one of the oldest universities in the world. Another detail that makes al-Azhar so unique: it was a Shiite theological center until the 1260s when the mosque was re-inaugurated as a Sunni institution.

Honestly, one of the best mosques I’ve seen in all of Cairo, it’s so clean and it’s isolated from everything around it so you’re at complete peace whether you’re coming to pray or admire it’s beauty. If you’re visiting to take pictures go either super early like around 9 AM or at sunset.

Al-Azhar Mosque, the beacon of knowledge and faith, and one of the historical strongholds for the spread of Islam and peace among nations and countries and the most famous in Egypt and the world Islam Al-Azhar Mosque and University for more than a thousand years on June 22, 972 AD opened the Al-Azhar Mosque to pray, which is currently one of the most important and ancient mosques and universities in the world and the oldest existing impact of the Fatimid state in Egypt .. On April 4, 970, the Fatimid caliph al-Muizz, the religion of God, laid the cornerstone of the Al-Azhar Mosque, that is, in the same year in which the leader Jawhar al-Skali opened Egypt and ordered the construction of Cairo, and the construction of the mosque was completed on June 22, 972 AD The historians differed on the reason for naming the Al-Azhar Mosque, some of whom attributed it to Mrs. Fatima Al-Zahra, which is more likely according to the Al-Azhar page, and there are those who attributed the name to the presence of the mosque between the luxurious and splendid palaces that surrounded it. And after its inauguration, Al-Azhar became a center of education, and dozens of scholars were employed to give lessons, laying the foundation for what could become the leading university in the Islamic world, where Al-Azhar is the second oldest university to exist continuously in the world after the University of Al-Karaouine. Al-Azhar Mosque played a major national role in the modern era in disseminating science and science Teaching in Al-Azhar at the beginning of the twentieth century was carried out through educational seminars and the study was divided into three primary, secondary and higher stages, and the duration of education in each of them is four years, and the successful student in each of them is granted a certificate of completion of the stage. In 1961 the Egyptian government issued Law No. 103, which formally created Al-Azhar University and became one of the bodies of Al-Azhar for specialized higher education, along with other bodies for education before the first university stage, and another for the Supreme Council of Al-Azhar, and a third for the Islamic Research Academy, which is concerned with the dissemination of Islamic culture He wrote heritage, and advocacy and student delegations in the outside world and their subsistence

Offering Jummah prayers is must thing to do if you are in Cairo. Such an amazing ambiance and heavenly feelings. Taking videos is not allowed in the mosque premises but you can take pictures. I would suggest you to act sensible while taking pictures inside the mosque, as it's also the place where they give classes and you'll notice a lots of students as well. Overall heavenly experience and recommended to Cairo visitors.

Its construction dates back to the beginning of the era of the Fatimid state in Egypt, after the essence of the Sicilian conquered Egypt in 969 AD, and he started establishing Cairo, he established the Grand Palace and prepared it for the descending of the Caliph al-Muizz to the religion of God, and during that he began to establish the Al-Azhar Mosque for the caliph to pray, and to be a mosque in the mosque The newly established city is similar to the Mosque of Amr in Fustat and the Mosque of Ibn Tulun in Al-Qata’ea, as well as preparing its time to be an educational institute for teaching and disseminating the Shiite doctrine, so he started building it in my first Jumada 359 AH / 970 CE, and its construction was completed and the first Friday in Ramadan was built in the year 361 AH / 972 CE, known as the Jami` Mosque Cairo [1] Although the hand of reform and restoration rolled over it throughout the ages, it changed many of its Fatimid features, but it is considered the oldest Fatimid monument existing in Egypt. Historians have disagreed on the origin of the naming of this mosque, and it is more likely that the Fatimids named it Al-Azhar after Fatima al-Zahra, daughter of the Prophet Muhammad. Al-Azhar Mosque, known simply in Egypt as al-Azhar, is an Egyptian mosque in Islamic Cairo. Al-Mu'izz li-Din Allah of the Fatimid dynasty commissioned its construction for the newly established capital city in 970. Its name is usually thought to derive from az-Zahrāʾ, a title given to Fatimah.

(Translated by Google) Al-Azhar Mosque is the second oldest continuously standing university in the world after Al-Qarawiyyin University. Although the Amr bin Al-Aas Mosque in Fustat preceded him in the teaching position, where the lesson sessions were held voluntarily and donated, but the Al-Azhar Mosque is the first in Egypt to play the role of regular schools and institutes, so its lessons were given on a mandate from the state and paid for by scholars and teachers. The first study was given in Safar in the year 365 AH / 975 CE by Ali bin al-Nu'man, the judge in the jurisprudence of the Shiites, and in the year 378 AH / 988 CE, salaries were decided for the mosque’s jurists and prepared a house for their residence next to it, and their number was thirty-five men. After the fall of the Fatimid state, the star of Al-Azhar faded at the hands of Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi, whose aim behind this was to fight the Shiite sect and support the Sunni doctrine. [4] During the Mamluk era, Al-Azhar returned to perform its scientific mission and its vital role, so it appointed jurists to teach the Sunni doctrine and the hadiths of the Prophet, and took care of its renewal, expansion and maintenance, thus it was considered the golden age of Al-Azhar, as the rulers and notables in the following eras showed a remarkable interest in its restoration and maintenance, and many endowments endowed it. During the reign of King Fuad the First, Law No. 46 of 1930 was issued for Al-Azhar, according to which the Faculties of Fundamentals of Religion, Sharia, Language and Arabic were established later in 1933, and Al-Azhar officially became an independent university in 1961. Al-Azhar University was considered the first in the Islamic world to study Sunni doctrine and Islamic law. (4) ] To this day, Al-Azhar remains a beacon to spread the moderation of Islam, an institution that has a profound influence in Egyptian society, and one of the symbols of Egypt (Original)

(Translated by Google) He who lives in the mosques of God is the one who believes in God and the Last Day and performs the prayers and commits zakat and is not afraid of God. Then he mentioned who were the most prominent of the mosques of God, and he said: (Only those who believe in God and the Last Day and perform the prayers will occupy the mosques of God), which are obligatory and mustahabb, by doing both the outward and the inside. (And he gave zakat) to its people (and he was only afraid of God) that is, limiting his fear to his Lord, so he ceased from what God forbade, and did not fall short of the due rights of God. He described them with beneficial faith, by doing righteous deeds whose mother is prayer and zakat, and in fear of God, which is the root of all good, for these are the most important mosques based on the truth and their people who are their people. (Perhaps those are among those who are converted) and “perhaps” from God is obligatory. As for the one who does not believe in God or the Last Day, and has no fear of God, then this is not one of the most renowned of the mosques of God, nor of its people who are its people, and if he claims that and claims it (Original) Beautiful place- free entry. Women will get an outfit there (but take a scarf to cover hair in case). you have to take off your shoes. Can put to your backpack. Pictures after the permission. There is a tour guard and he knows English language and can explain everything about the mosque and Muslim religion. Take sunglasses, the floor is so bright so you won't stop crying.

Interesting to see. Be sure to wear the proper attire especially as a woman. There wasn’t much to see and certain areas were forbidden to enter. It wasn’t clear which areas were not allowed to visit and so we were sent away from certain areas while trying to site see. If there is a clear sign to see where is forbidden it could make a big difference for tourists.

Very Sacred and Holy place.Al-Azhar Mosque is the first mosque that was founded in Cairo in 997 AD, and it is now one of the most important religious and historical monuments in Egypt. The architectural design of the building is characterized by harmony between a number of architectural styles due to the political and cultural changes that have occurred in Cairo over a period of more than 1,000 years. The mosque is now the main religious center in Egypt

It is a very beautiful mosque, but if you do not know anything about Egypt, let me give you a little information. If you have a girlfriend, I recommend her to wear it long and closed, and it is very difficult in this hot weather, if she wears short clothes, shorts, T-shirts, men are drooling. People are uncivilized and ape-like: perverts. Being Muslim doesn't make them innocent, they look at you disgustingly. There are some well-meaning people among them, but they come to you to take pictures by pretending to be aliens, this part was fun.

A well managed and well maintained mosque, not the prettiest mosque as you would expect from a very ancient and historic mosque but it is always very clean and neat. Has enough security personnel especially during Friday prayers. A good experience to visit.
