This is such a wonderful place. Just blew me away. It is said that Mary and Joseph with baby Jesus, had taken shelter here for a few months during the persecution by King Herod. There is even a well, which they are said to have used. The cave in which they stayed is now a crypt and open to view. This is the oldest church within Coptic Cairo. The church was named after two Roman soldiers who were martyred there because of their Christian faith around 290AD. The church has a collection of old Christian manuscripts and Bibles. They are also Coptic Christian artwork and icons. The walls are really pretty with contrasting brickwork in different colors. Entrance here is free. Try and reach there there earlier in the morning, before the group tours arrive, you will enjoy your visit more. For photographers it is paradise, filled with numerous photo opportunities.

One important historical sites to visit in Cairo. You can see the site where Mary, Joseph stayed for more than a month, you can see the will that they used to get water to drink. It’s very nice well maintained site, you feel how that area in Cairo where the place of all religions. Outside the church you can find books representing all this history and more.

Place is full of history, where Jesus, Mary and Joseph stayed for three months, small church and you're even allowed to take pictures, another plus is there is no charge to go in, majority of places in Cairo have an entrance fee.

Very famous Christian place of worship as it is practically one of the few left in Cairo. The family of jesus, still Young, stayed here during his trip to egypt. It is commonly said that Joseph was its guardian. Inside it is well kept and you can visit all the ravines and works that are still well kept. The entrance is free.

Special place with the faith. Unique touches like a well that Mary, Joseph, & Jesus used. People rub their faces on the flags with the picture of Mary on them, which is weird. (Something to behold)

One of the best churches I have visited in Egypt so far. The wooden arches the marble inlays the historic articles and tales of clashes are well depicted in the church. The church looks like a mini museum and also has so many things on the display. The portraits on the walls dates back to several centuries and are incredibly well preserved. The guide in the church are very lively and humble, they explain everything you ask them. I would highly recommend you to visit the church if you ever come to Cairo.

The church is dedicated to Sergius and Bacchus, who were soldier-saints martyred during the 4th century in Syria by the Roman Emperor Maximian. The most interesting feature is the crypt where Mary, Joseph and the infant Jesus are said to have rested. The crypt is 10 meters deep and, when Nile levels are high, is often flooded. The Church was built in the 4th century and was probably finished during the 5th century. It was burned during the fire of Fustat during the reign of Marwan II around 750. It was then restored during the 8th century, and has been rebuilt and restored constantly since medieval times; however, it is still considered to be a model of the early Coptic churches. Again, the most precious and ancient of the icons are on the southern wall. A vast central hall is divided into three naves by two rows of pilasters

A beautiful Coptic Orthodox Church on the site where the Holy Family lodged for a while during their stay in Egypt. The church is built adjoining and incorporating the cave where the Holy Family stayed. A well from which they drank can also be seen. The deep significance of this site makes it a most memorable pilgrimage.

Historically important church, built on the cave where the holy family hid for a while to escape prosecution. Can be very crowded if you arrive during tour group visits. Make sure to visit the actual cave, on an entrance on the back of the church (might not always be open).

Aka Abu Serga. A Coptic church from the 4th century. The Church smells like a cave. Many intricate wood carvings and panels, separating the church into several naves. Contains a cave where the Holy Family was said to have stayed during their flight to Egypt. And also a well They used.

The history of the church’s construction is in doubt, as some scholars believe it dates back to the end of the fourth and early fifth centuries AD, while others see it as dating back to the seventeenth century AD. This is the oldest church inside Coptic Cairo's walls, built in the 11th century with 4th-century pillars. It honours the Roman soldiers Sergius and Bacchus, who were martyred in Syria for their Christian faith in AD 296. It is built over a cave where Joseph, Mary and the infant Jesus are said to have taken shelter after fleeing to Egypt to escape persecution from King Herod of Judea, who had embarked upon a ‘massacre of the first born’.

The Church of St Sergius and Bacchus is a Coptic church, dating back to the 4th century. There’s a crypt underneath the church which is traditionally believed to be the spot where Mary, Joseph and the infant Jesus are said to have rested at the end of their journey into Egypt. Something which is very popular with visitors. Arrayed along the walls of the interior are relics of various saints. Other than that the church is somewhat nondescript. Worthwhile visiting this church if you’re in Coptic Cairo.

(Translated by Google) Very beautiful church with an interesting history. Did the Holy Family really live in the cave under the church? This is really a question for historians, and from a tourist's point of view this is of secondary importance. It is important that tradition speaks of the stay of the Holy Family, and the Copts built a wonderful church here. Walking in the basement of the church you can feel the atmosphere of mystery. There are no crowds of people here, no dealers. There is a legend, a secret and an opportunity to focus. Very interesting place worth visiting.

Holly place, there is a bazzar just before getting to the church. A must for Christians and anybody who would like to enjoy such an iconic landmark!

This church really is a must see if you come to Cairo. It's spectacularly renovated and now looks like it's in prestine condition. The virgin Mary hid in this church for three months with baby Jesus after they fled to Egypt to escape persecution from King Herod of Judea, who had embarked upon a ‘massacre of the first born’. The religious and historical significance of the building makes this a must see. There is a synagogue and another church in the same area in old Cairo. The mix of religions and architecture that's heavily influenced by Islamic art makes you realize how much of a religious melting pot Egypt really is. All of these religions living side by side peacefully is a great example for the rest of the world.

Great place to explore! Don’t forget to find the cavern church where Jesus, Maria and Joseph stayed for 3 months and is very interesting. Easy to get lost in the complex and it was fairly busy for a Wednesday afternoon.

I visited this church back in 1989, when it was still under restoration. I was the only tourist present. I was lucky to have seen the crypt in its original state, as it must have appeared centuries ago. It felt like I had travelled back in time.

This is in Coptic Cairo and not far from the hanging church. It’s the actual place that Mary, Jesus and Joseph hid for a few months. Talk about a nostalgic feel! Very crowded! Will take you at least 30-45 minutes to navigate your way to the bottom of the church. There are opportunities to donate to the church and you can get receipts for this also. You can light a candle. May have to buy one. Worth it for the sentimental value.

The church is dedicated to Sergius and Bacchus, who were martyred during the fourth century in Syria by the Roman Emperor Maximian. The most interesting feature is the crypt where Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus are said to have rested. The cellar is 10 meters deep, and when Nile levels rise, it is often flooded. The church was built in the fourth century and was probably completed during the fifth century. It was burned during the Fustat fire during the reign of Marwan II around 750. It was then restored during the eighth century, and has been continuously rebuilt and restored since the Middle Ages; However, it is still considered a model for the early Coptic churches. Again, the most precious and oldest icons are on the south wall. A spacious central hall divided into three naves by two rows of columns. Pope Christodoulos
