The reception staff are the only good thing about this hotel. It is above a Walkabout night club. The music starts at 10pm until 3am from Thursday to Sunday. Couldn't sleep and were offered ear plugs by reception which we took and used. Very central for railway station and city centre so if you are clubbing yourselves it will be perfect.

Absolutely no value for money as there are similarly priced hotels nearby. Rooms are incredibly dirty and many bits are broken, including soap dispenser (but it didn’t even have soap anyways). Staff do not seem to care regardless of how many times you make them aware of the issues. Bins are not emptied even if filled up to the top. Didn’t feel comfortable walking without flip-flops as carpet was clearly outdated and dirty too. Reasonably located if you’re using the train station but absolutely no other positive side.

I’m afraid I can’t recommend here and would never consider staying again - it’s a disappointment to the brand and needs serious attention. On checking in the member of staff at reception couldn’t find my reservation but eventually found some magic to bring it up. However after much tapping and attempts wasn’t able to take payment. This was escalated to another staff member who assisted, but I was left no option but for them to charge the same card used for the guarantee when booking. I had to wait until the morning to obtain the invoice. My room was on the first floor and all the communal areas and lift were dated, dirty and damaged. The room itself took this to a whole new level though - the fabric on the bed frame was torn, the wood on the desk was peeling, the walls were dirty, lamps wonky and generally just tatty. The pop-up single bed was a bit of an embarrassment and wasn’t one I’d ever want to use. The large windows overlooked the main street outside and did little to block out the noise. This was particularly bad at night, since the floor below is a nightclub / karaoke bar open until the early hours. The crowds and music make it practically impossible to sleep. Given there’s no air-conditioning or fans, and the fact the room was incredibly hot, you’re left with the impossible decision of opening a window and making the noise even worse, or sweating in an already unappealing bed. You may enjoy a few moments of peace when the club finally closes in the very early hours, but not for long as then the industrial commercial bin collection starts. In all fairness the bathroom seemed clean and was a decent enough size. It continued the dated feel though and the soap dispenser in the shower was empty. Overall the hotel offered no value for money at all, given there are multiple other options nearby at a very similar price, and with the state of the rooms and complete lack of sleep quality would strongly suggest no one else takes the risk of staying here.

Amazing location for bars and restaurants on at Mary's street and just a few moments from Cardiff Central station. Rooms basic but clean. No air con bit that was expected. Die to location not the quietest place I've ever stayed in but that's an observation not a criticism friendly staff. No option to hold baggage as don't have secure storage

Staff was very unwelcoming no hello and stood around on their phones, chatting amongst themselves while quest waited to be seen, however rooms were clean and brilliant for a budget stay. Must be said that if you are looking to get a decent nights sleep or have children to consider this is not the hotel for you music from the club kept myself up in early hours, and there was a lot of banging around going on. Was unaware of there was club right next to the hotel until my arrival.

Take ear plugs! We were on the top floor, with the windows shut and could still hear the music from the pubs very clearly. No soap in the dispensers. The room was clean

No ventilation if you want air you need the windows open but if you don't want to hear music till 5am you need them shut. One bed had sweets in it, crumbs all over the chair and stain on bedding Budget hotel but basic cleanliness shouldn't be missed. We ended up leaving my husband woke at 3am unable to breath properly and also needed a drink cold tap was just warm water coming out then went to Vending machine and completely empty. Cardiff is a place for adults wouldn't take kids again

Room clean but carpet full of stains and needs replacing. Not able to leave bags at the hotel before check in or after checking out. Staff checking in friendly. Our room on top floor very noisy all night until 4 am with loud music from club across the street. This was a Monday night. It was cheap and good location for city centre.shops clubs pubs and railway station.

Bed was a little uncomfortable but that's just my opinion. Can be a little noisy. One point the cleaners came into the room without knocking before we checked out. But hey it wasn't too bad for the price.

Great hotel. We paid for a saver room and wasn't expecting much for the price we paid, however,we was pleasantly surprised to see our room upon arrival. It had ample room to move around ,a TV,plenty of storage and had tea/coffee making facilities. The hotel and room were clean and smelled nice. The staff were really friendly and helpful. Don't expect the ritz if you are only paying £30 but if you're staying in Cardiff and need a decent low budget hotel then this ticks all of your boxes. Would highly recommend.

Good location but seriously needs updating its ok to put your head down for the night. rooms really basic security tags on window to stop opening fully were broken So window was wide open. Rooms were so hot even with window open and no heater on. Definitely not worth the price the charge for a Saturday night stay. Reception couldn't find booking when we got there had to spell my name twice and still couldn't find it but then found it by the ref no. And be aware of idiots who think it was funny to set off fire alarm at 5am.

We wanted a place close to the train station with a clean and comfortable bed, and that's what we found. No frills, no hassles. It was also very quiet. There was an issue with getting the toilet to flush, but otherwise there were no problems. Would stay again.

Pretty much the perfect place to stay for a night in central Cardiff. The hotel is between The Great Western Wetherspoons and The Walkabout which in itself isn't an issue. We were seeing a show at the arena and it was only a 5 minutes walk from the hotel. Cardiff Central train station is even closer than that. There are numerous bars and restaurants within a short walk. The only problem we encountered was building work on a nearby new office build stated really early in the morning so were woken by the sound of drilling, banging and an electric saw Otherwise a faultless visit with really friendly front of house staff

Key card wasn't refreshed for my 3 night stay, so every day I couldn't get into the room and had to trail down to reception to get it refreshed. Got the usual nonsense excuse "did you keep in next to your wallet?" Moody staff member. Yes, we all do always no reason for it to fail each day. Other hotels, Travelodges work just fine. When I got the card refreshed one night another guy was at reception with the same issue, so not just me keeping it in a pocket by my wallet lol Worse than that, someone came barging into my room at 10pm one evening. Their key card somehow operated my door - I seemed to be in a room between a group of friends' rooms. Not secure at all, and not acceptable of course. No soap/shower gel in either of the dispensers. Room was fine, comfy bed. Noisy, as you'd expect from Cardiff on a weekend, but not the hotel's fault. Was crashing smashing bottles being poured into a bin at 3.30am 5 times in a 10 minute period by one of the Walkabout or similar adjacent bars. Be aware of this you will be woken up Sunday early doors, if you're in a room at the back like I was. It's ok and cheap I guess, and in the heart of the action, but I'll try an alternative Travelodge next time

This hotel, if you could call it that, is like many Travelodge establishments across the UK - extremely poor quality and dirty. The receptionist struggled to find my booking, even after I spelled out my name I was then required to find my booking number and state my address in reception. I was told to "be careful" walking around the floor due to a carpet replacement in full swing on a floor open to the public (carpet replacement is desperately needed in rooms and at most Travelodges so this is in fact welcome). The room itself as you'll see from the photos is worn out and dirty. There is a street light right outside the room I stayed in, and the curtains are not black out curtains so the light constantly seeps in. The only real positive about this hotel is its extremely convenient location, just a few minutes walk from Cardiff Central railway station and a short walk into the city centre. Otherwise, avoid. There are plenty of nicer hotels nearby and the price difference isn't as big as you'd expect. Only stayed here as pre booked a non refundable room, but will never book Travelodge again after my experiences with them across the country earlier this year.

Basic Budget hotel. Rooms could do with a bit of tlc and an update. Booked late check out and had one member of staff disturbing me to see if I'd left, and another just left themselves in. Thankfully I was dressed at the time. Felt pushed to leave even tho I'd payed to stay later. Payed for a double bed but had 2 single beds pushed together. Anytime you rolled towards the center the beds moved apart. I knew I'd hear music but didn't realise how loud it would be. So between the music and the beds moving couldn't sleep until 3.30am. Only upside was its location.

Would of had 5* for service but one lady on the evening shift kept locking the doors way before 10.00 pm. Hand locking them so our card wouldn't even open them. Normally there's been no problems

Great location you can walk everywhere from here. The staff were very friendly and more than helpful when we asked for more towels. The room was clean but there was a bad smell in the hallway. The hotel needs a little more care and looking after. You get what you pay for and for the price you can't complain.

The room was very spacious, it was very cold in the room as there was only one small heater which wasn't powerful enough to heat the room. My room was above the club where music was playing until 3 in the morning, which made it very difficult to sleep. The bathroom was very dirty, the bath is full of soap scum. I would not recommend staying here due to the un cleanliness of the place. Another downfall was you have to pay for WiFi. But a positive note is the staff on reception where very nice.

  • 5/5 Adam W. 8 months ago on Google
All in all was a pretty bad stay, we were put at front of hotel which in itself was a bad move as u can hear all music from outside on strip. Then this morning I came down and Manager on was saying SIT ON MY FACE, SIT ON MY FACE. definitely needs to get his management skills rechecked .

  • 2/5 Jonathan M. 8 months ago on Google
The hotel says they're some disruption, does not articulate that the club literally below is open till 3pm and vibrates through the hotel. Ear plugs are effectively worthless. If your intention is to get wankered on the weekend and have a drink-induced coma and sleep through, or are in the club till closing, this is the place for you.

Noticed alot of bad reviews regarding dirty carpets!!...just to confirm when we went up to our family room we were met with the lovely smell of NEWLY FITTED CARPET throughout the whole of the 1st floor which continued into our room, I presume the remaining floors were the same. Room 110 was very spacious and clean and was situated at the front of the hotel with 3 full length windows which could be opened slightly from the bottom plus sliding patio style windows overlooking bars and restaurants. We returned to our room around 10pm after visiting the arena from a show with all the bars warming up for the evening this was a Sunday evening so wasn't expecting much going on...how wrong was I!!music in the street seemed louder once we had settled into bed with a karaoke going on somewhere beneath us ( there will definitely not be any future applicants for BGT or the voice coming from that bar ) by 11.30 the street was well and truly alive..decided to Google the closing times of the bars...thinking its Sunday they will be closing shortly...again how wrong was I....bars close at 12...2am and 3am ...Great!! considering our alarm was set at 3 am to get up for our onwards journey to bristol airport. So please be aware if you need to sleep or have young children then request a back room. we did close all windows which didn't make much difference and made the room extremely warm. On leaving the receptionist was lovely and apologised when I told her of the noise..she did say she would have moved us to another room which I would have requested if we had not been getting up so early. This hasn't put me off of staying..at least I will know for next time

Value for money is excellent and very centrally located. But it gets very noisy at night especially end of week and weekends which could be a problem depending on your room. Rooms are a little on the worn side but generally clean. It’s worth going for an upgraded room as these are generally on the top floor with windows to the rear or central light well so this minimises noise at night.

This Travelodge is a nice, comfortable, quiet hotel, smack in the middle of Cardiff city centre. You can get the bus right outside to the bottom of pen y fan. There are loads of pubs and restaurants nearby, including a Wetherspoons that is right next door. I couldn’t complain at all with the service that I received when I visited shortly after lockdown. I was even able to have a bath in my room to relax my aching feet after my trip up the mountain!

I’ve visited lots of Travelodges and this is the worst yet, sadly. Staff were friendly enough but it was a very basic stay with a lack of tea/milk from when we first got in the room. The bed was a bit uncomfy with springs sticking out a little. The TV worked but remote was dodgy as some buttons no longer work. We stayed Monday and Tuesday night. Monday night was fine but Tuesday night from 9pm-2am was quite noisy due to the bars attached to the hotel both underneath (Walkabout) and either side, including spoons. We did expect this but not to the extent it was played at nor for how late it carried on for! At checkout there was a sign that we hadn’t seen nor been aware of beforehand which was that they do not store luggage - they recommended a Spar up the road but they wouldn’t take it, so we had to trek to other hotels to find somewhere that kindly took our luggage for free. Overall I’d highly recommend staying in Cardiff, but not this hotel!! Spend a bit extra and enjoy it elsewhere.

Great location. Staff at front desk were ok but seemed to be having a private conversation at the same time as booking us in. The room was clean but clearly is showing some signs of use. The desk / TV stand was clearly coming apart and had nail varnish smear on it. Coffee pods also had no indication on them to say what they were . But for £30 complaining would be a bit harsh

Tatty hotel with lovely staff. My room was an endless walk away on the 3rd floor. It was very badly in need of renovation. Clean, but very basic and few amenities, broken tv remote, nowhere to charge phone near bed and very tired and incredibly basic for over £100, although clean. Close to shops and station. Otherwise, not recommended.

  • 1/5 Felix L. 4 months ago on Google
Had a shower, got out, only to find the majority of the floor in the room was soaking wet. Socks and jersey shorts on the window side of the bed were soaked through. Had brought some water, juices, arrowroot biscuits and skittles. Didn't attempt to try any of the food or liquid due to possible contamination. Left and informed the night staff lady. She tried to apologise and offer me another room, which I politely declined, and promptly left, asking her to get the plumbers in ASAP and to get their house in order. This is the only time I have been let down by a Travelodge.

  • 4/5 Rhian S. 1 year ago on Google
Excellent location for everything! We went to watch a gig and had a brilliant time. It is noisy at night though because it's sandwiched between a Wetherspoons and a Walkabout so may not suit all. Great budget hotel!

  • 4/5 Steve P. 2 years ago on Google
Great location, very friendly and helpful staff and usual Travelodge standard. Very clean and some amazing Sunday night deals. The carpet in the room was a little tired and given its proximity to Central Square there was construction noise but I slept through that.

  • 2/5 Mark B. 2 years ago on Google
Bog standard travelodge. Bed was comfy. The window opened but had a building site opposite so couldn't leave it open because of dust. Cheap place to stay near to the station.

I stayed on a Sunday night. Nice clean room with plenty of space. Working desk, coffee & tea in room, bottle opener, TV and plenty of plug points for gadgets to charge. Check in was super easy and staff were friendly and polite. It’s only a small Travelodge, so no left luggage facility or restaurant. Vending machine in reception. But Wetherspoons next door and surrounded by bars and restaurants. Very close to Cardiff Central rail station only a few minutes walk, plus close to main high street. Only negatives was that the glass bin collectors do come early around 6am. And building site opposite that starts work around 8am. Not hotels fault, just due to there location. Was happy with my stay, I felt safe and would stay again next time I visit Cardiff.

I thought in Wales it was still law to wear a face mask, not in this hotel every one is exempt, even when i was talking to reception about it 3 people walked in without them and nothing was said, reception said it is up to them not to wear them, errm say something, and apart from the beds are so comfortable the rooms could do with a refurb. But pleanty of eateries around train station only 3 mins away

  • 4/5 Lauren G. 2 years ago on Google
Did the job of needing an affordable hotel close to the train station after getting into the city late. Wouldn’t suggest it for more than a night. Great location if you’re looking to be right on the thick of all the bars, restaurants, and cafes. Room was boiling hot though as it is summertime and there was no way to open up the window more than a crack and no fan provided.

Lovely comfy clean beds. However the room hadn't been cleaned properly dust everywhere.. Bathroom left with marks over taps hair in Bath an wee left down toilet. Other than this I had a really good night sleep.

Great location right in the centre of the city. Rooms are a nice size, unfortunately a little grimey in places could do with a freshen up. The lift didn't go up to the third floor as the button was broken. Staff were friendly and helpful.

  • 4/5 Nee B. 1 year ago on Google
Best part is the great central location 5 minutes from the train station. No extra amenities like a hairdryer, no toothbrushes to purchase at reception, only 1 hand towel and 1 bath towel for 2 people sharing. Hotel and room were clean with a working TV. Overall would use again

Always try and stay in the St Mary's Street lodge. Handy for all the pubs and clubs. Good mattresses and pillows. Rooms tidy and clean. We only want it for a shower and somewhere to sleep so it suits us fine.

Excellent clean room, upgraded to family. Went here for a concert in Cardiff international arena. Literally 5 minutes walk. Excellent price very helpful and friendly staff. Close to food places and train station.

  • 1/5 Emily M. 1 year ago on Google
This Travelodge was cheap and I now know why. Situated above the Walkabout nightclub, it's main clientele are drunk people that can't get home after the night out. It was noisy from the club and there were doors slamming in the early hours. The rooms were very old and worn and felt pretty dirty. The sheets and towels were clean at least. Location was good for the station but only if you don't care about sleep or will be out clubbing with the rest of them. Otherwise I would avoid.

  • 3/5 Aimee R. 2 years ago on Google
It was okay. Price was about £53 for the night for two people which is reasonable. The room had areas that were dirty, like the kettle, radiator. The soap dispenser was falling off the wall. However the worst thing by far was that, on a Thursday night, the club next door played music until around 1/2am which kept me and my husband up as it was extremely loud from our room. This may have been worse because we were on the lower floor but when we return we will be asking for a higher up floor. It's decent for the price but things could definitely be changed and improved.

  • 2/5 Zach W. 2 years ago on Google
This hotel is conveniently located near the Motorpoint arena for post gig rest (provided you enjoy the music from the club downstairs. You could remedy this by strapping in your best rock n roll shoes and partying until they close). The hotel looks like it's seen more after show parties than Keith Richards, given the state of the rooms. The decor is tired and dirty and if the walls could talk, you'd fill Wales online with tales of debauchery for months.

  • 5/5 Simon M. 1 year ago on Google
This is an older Travel Lodge and it does show in places, Not that it bothers me but can be noisy on a Friday and Saturday night as always busy in town. We did hear loud seagulls and delivery trucks around 7 am, but they have to do their job. Honourable mentions to the front desk team. Every contact with every member from check in to check out was greeted with a smile, and they could not have been more helpful. Thank you.

  • 3/5 Adam B. 1 year ago on Google
3 stars is a very fair review - if you just want a comfortable, good value bed for the night, this place is grand. Perfect location for Cardiff city centre. Just try not to think about the fact your room door is loose even when bolted (!!!!, I was too tired to go complain), the weird stains on the carpet in the hall, the construction noise outside that's not really their fault, or the smell in reception. Not too bad, really.

  • 4/5 David A. 1 year ago on Google
This hotel is in a great location for exploring the city. There's no car park for this hotel so, we parked in the station car park about a 5 minute walk away. Loads of bars, shops and restaurants near by and a short walk to the main shopping area of Cardiff. We had a quiet stay and would definitely stay here again.

  • 4/5 Sarah J. 1 year ago on Google
Excellent location, just around the corner from Central Station. Clean, and beds were comfy. Staff on reception really helpful, and replenished all room supplies. Only down side was no luggage storage, so we had to drag cases around prior to our train departure

  • 3/5 ouzo c. 1 year ago on Google
Exactly what you'd expect from a Travelodge. Big room but above a nightclub. Stayed on a Monday, Tuesday and noise wasn't too bad on the 3rd floor. Room was clean and presentable but a bit shabby round the edges. Worth the money paid and I'd stay again.

  • 1/5 Ollie 2 years ago on Google
Terrible experience all around. Staff were rude and misleading. Was told by a member of staff that I needed to book an extra room and that I would be refunded. Complete hoax, ended up paid double and was later told by the manager it was my fault. The Hotel is above a night club so good luck getting sleep. Pretty sure there was blood on the carpet. Bath was tiny, couldn't fit a whole person in it. Wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

Great hotel, reasonable price for a place so close to the city centre, you’ll pay double else where! Staff were helpful and friendly, rooms were clean and tidy… beds were comfortable!
