I’m going to go ahead and throw this one up there with Aberdeen Tap as a great local spot that just doesn’t miss. With its throwback nostalgia and quirky interior this bar has more of a welcome pub feel than you’ll find most anywhere in River north. But don’t let that dissuade you from ordering more than beers cause the food is delicious too. And by food, I mean ALL of it. You can’t go wrong. If I lived closer this would be in the weekly rotation. Hell I might even go there 3-4x/week and for me to say that the place has to be special. Don’t forget the nightly shows in the speakeasy either!!! 👌🏼 10/10

The Green Door Tavern has great food. I will say it’s a bit on the heavier side.

The speakeasy downstairs is awesome! Worth checking out if you're there. Outside of that, overall Green Door is a solid spot for a date or a spot to gather with friends!

Not a fan. They laugh at you if you want to order off the kids menu as an adult. They really enforce the 12 and under rule and make you feel stupid if you are willing to pay for the adult version but just want to eat the kids plate. I’m sorry i don’t have a big appetite. I didn’t want to waste food. I guess That’s a ridiculous ask. The waitresses here also have temper tantrums at the table and they get super irritated if you order anything.

Finally went here and had the time of my life. What a warm ambiance at chicagos oldest tavern. So much history. All their pub fare is delicious. Fries and poutine are awesome. Great place to celebrate birthday too! They have vegan options too!!

I’ve been here a few times and so has several people I know and it’s quite a few people’s regular! The food and the drinks are pretty great, the staff is really nice (mostly lol), and service is decently fast. Would highly recommend the poutine and any of the burgers, we typically get the bootlegger, but probably can’t go wrong with anything!

Our server was fantastic; she engaged my son and helped us have a great time. The burgers were excellent. The beef on bun was average at best. The pinball machine works, but bring your own quarters because no one, even after walking to other bars and restaurants, had 4 quarters for a dollar bill.

Not my usual stopping grounds but my friend invited me so I came. I had a patty melt and the turtle cheesecake, both good. I would feel overdressed in anything more than a jean jacket at this place, but for a downtown bar it's decent.

I absolutely love GDT! It's old, it slants, it's the quintisential neighborhood bar with great pub fair and friendly people. Whether going solo, with a group or on a date, it's relaxing and historical feel is perfect for day or night. A speakeasy downstairs is another gem that doesn't disappoint!

Rudest bouncer I have ever encountered. From the moment we stepped in he nonstop yelled at us for anything and everything, including standing at the bar. This would be a great bar, but my interaction with him makes me never want to return.

I come here pretty much every week with some friends after work. The atmosphere is great and it’s a nice place to have a few beers with some friends. They have a decent number of options, and they make sure you’ve always got something. I haven’t actually had any food outside of some apps yet, so maybe that’ll change in the future but for now I’ve enjoyed my time at the Green Door Tavern.

Had this on our list while in town for the 24 hours in Chicago. Sadly, service was slow. Very slow. The "downstairs" didn't open till 5, according to the server. Sad we didn't get the great experience everyone raves about.

Great spot to stop by for a beer with friends. Social and friendly bar. Interiors make a good vibe

Fun atmosphere. Ask about the speakeasy downstairs. Requires reservations on busy nights

Nice atmosphere. The speakeasy "the drifter" downstairs is awesome. The building is one of the last if not the last wooden frame building still left after the great chicgo fire in 1871.. a must visit espcially "the drifter"..get to the drifter early..the wait list could be long ..5 stars

It was so disappointing and sad. We came here with a diverse group. we were all in such a great mood and wanted to have a last drink for the night. We all ordered a drink, and some of the ladies ran to the restroom. While we were away, the bar tenders made a very rude racist comment about us not knowing that our friends were at the bar. It totally killed the vibe for the night. It's so sad that people are still so racist and closed-minded. Peace and l Iove 🙏 🤲

I spent an evening there and met a very nice girl. that was 4 years ago I don't know where she has done in the last 4 years. but I know the day we spent and night together was unforgettable. I don't remember her name. She was Not living at a stable place. I was in town for work. we might have dinner and drinks. I fell in love I wish I could find her.

Had a good time here with a group of coworkers. Beer was cold, food was fine, atmosphere is exactly what you want when you go to an Irish pub. Probably won't go back because it's not really my style, but if you're into Irish pubs, give this place a try.

You can't go wrong with a place with this kind of history alone. Plenty of antiques to look at, plenty of room, and a great variety of beer. If you're still bored, you can always spin the shot wheel.

The Green Door Tavern is a true neighborhood gem with its warm and inviting wooden interiors adorned with nostalgic memorabilia. Whether you're braving Chicago's cold winters or enjoying its hot summer nights, the down-to-earth staff and cozy ambiance ensure a delightful experience. The ever-evolving menu stays true to the theme of "eat, drink, be merry," and you'll often find locals cheering for their beloved sports teams. The dedication of The Green Door staff guarantees a memorable visit and satisfies every hungry visitor who wanders in from Orleans Street. No matter where you're from, this pub feels like a home away from home. Cheers to great times at The Green Door Tavern!

This bar is different from most of the Irish pubs around the city if not for its history. It's said they've been here 100 years! They have a little speakeasy bar in the basement and good pub grub up top. Stop in for a pint and a bite.

One of the best bars in the city. Upstairs, Sam and the service team are wonderful and always create an inviting atmosphere and the food is always great (favorites are chicken tenders & Italian beef poutine). Downstairs is like a whole different world in itself and definitely worth checking out!

Great bar, great service. Tried the scotch eggs at the bar, very good. Really great bar atmosphere. Wish this was my corner bar.

Fantastic historical place with great food and OK drink prices. Not a fan of the location, but who cares. Love the decor here. Really feels like I'm having a couple of pints with some people that have been around the block a couple of times. Pretty neat features downstairs. Take a look around!

Really great bar, option to change music at kiosk. Usually playing alternative rock. Really great prices, good for whiskey and burbon, draft beer.

Excellent food! This is the best bar food and the best brussel sprouts I've ever had. The service was good and ambience was incredible. This is my new favorite bar in Chicago!

The GDT poutine is a meal in itself. The chicago take on crinkle fries, gravy and cheese curd staple but add italian beef and giardeneria and its lights out!!!

Fun and interesting spot with a lot to offer. the food it pretty good and petty reasonable. It has a very traditional tavern environment and there's a lot of things to look at. the patrons and bartenders are talkative and friendly. prices reasonable. but this location really shines as a date spot. the hidden cocktail lounge held in the basement is one of the best dates spots in the city hands down. you can get food and a beer at the green door and then go downstairs for cocktails and live performances.

Came here while out with friends bar hopping. We were waiting on entry to the speakeasy downstairs so we decided to grab a few drinks. It was pure chaos. The place was completely packed so we had a hard time getting drinks but the bartenders did their best to keep up with the crowd and did heavy pours.

  • 5/5 Kirk R. 1 year ago on Google
Classic bar, loaded to the gills with ambiance. Solid G&T here, many beers to choose from as well. 🎯 Get the bartender to spin the wheel behind the bar if you’re undecided on a drink? Perhaps a devilled egg? Something unique lies behind the bookcase downstairs 🤔

Ask for Jorge. He’ll hook you up at full price. If he says anything like “deez” in the sentence it’s a trap and the punchline will be “deez prices amirite”. Don’t fall for it. To change the subject, order the poutine which is like type 2 diabetes in a bowl. Fuuuuck is it good though. As far as experiences go, when you go in to the GDT it’s like performing CPR on a child at the public pool you like to pee in after dark and he actually lives. Not like last time when you got yelled at and told you’re not a lifeguard. Liberals! Anything to make you, a freedom patriot look bad!
