I love this place. I try to attend or visit most of the programmes in this Institute. It's creating a flow of art culture for all people through the development of national culture and art, preservation and expansion of cultural heritage. You can visit here for free. The security facility is very good. All the facilities you will get here including the washroom, parking, wheel chair accessibility etc.

It's a breathtakingly gorgeous setting where one may unwind and have fun. If that makes sense, we may think of it as the hub of our cultural heritage as Bengalis. The best possible environment is provided here for attendees of musical performances, dramatic readings, theatrical plays, and other cultural events. It is a particularly ideal location for musicians, actors, and other creative types because it has art galleries, musician's quarters, make-up facilities, studios, and a large theater on the grounds. It may be found just across from the Anti-Corruption Commission. It's an incredibly beautiful place.

Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy is an exhibition center that hosts different rich, vibrant Art exhibitions, cultural shows, dance shows and drama theatres at different times. There is always something going on that you can enjoy with your whole family and friends. There is ample open space to gossip with your friends. Sometimes there is temporary food shops that offer traditional snacks and foods especially winter cakes (শীতের পিঠা). For individual events there are several multistoried buildings with parking spaces. Please check for any particular event duration and timings before visiting.

Founded in 1974, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy is a national organization for cultural activities, such as arts, dance, drama, recitations and such. It consists of 6 main divisions. Located in Segun Bagicha, this is one of the centre points of Dhaka city worth visiting. I have been to the Shilpakala Academy many times since my childhood. One of my cousins used to perform in dramas and we used to go and watch him play. I recently went with a friend during an art and a dance event. The place has been refurbished under the current government. The lighting is amazing and it has never been so crowded before. Definitely recommended to pay a visit.

It's a stunningly beautiful place in which to enjoy oneself while being entertained. We may conceive of it as the epicenter of our Bengali cultural legacy, if that makes sense. Participants in theatrical performances, dramatic readings, musical performances, and other cultural activities will be able to do so in the most comfortable setting possible here. There are art galleries, musicians' quarters, make-up facilities, studios, and a vast theater on the property, making it a particularly desirable place for musicians, actors, and other creative types. It is located right across the street from the Anti-Corruption Commission. It's a breathtakingly lovely location.

I went to the Art Exhibit that took place here. I personally LOVED the exhibition. I had a great companion, and I loved hanging out here. The pieces had the artist introduction beside them, that was great for people like me who didn't understand art with a deeper meaning. I loved admiring the amazing talent that these wonderful artists had. I really want to go back there and spend my whole day. I loved how the security was very particular about wearing masks. And I loved how they were taking care of everyone's bags, too. I met a wonderful girl here who took my photos, and I wish I could ask her name. All in all, a great place to go to during this winter. Would definitely recommend it!

Bara Katra, a historical and architectural monument, is one of the oldest buildings in Dhaka. The word Katra may have originated from Arabic word Katara which means colonnaded building. 'Katra/ katara' in Arabic and Persian means 'Caravan Sarai' or simply a 'Sarai'. Now there is a madrasa in it. But It's about to lost it's pride for the lack of care. Thank you

Bara Katra (Bengali: বড় কাটরা; Great Caravanserai), a historical and architectural monument, is one of the oldest buildings in Dhaka.[1] The word Katra may have originated from Arabic word Katara which means colonnaded building. 'Katra/ katara' in Arabic and Persian means 'Caravan (Karwan) Sarai' or simply a 'Sarai'. It is a palatial building dating to the reign of the Mughal dynasty in the Bengal region. It is situated to the south of Chowk Bazaar close to the north bank of the river Buriganga. History 1823 etching of Bara Katra by Sir Charles D'Oyly 1870 photograph of Bara Katra 1975 view of Bara Katra from the south Bara Katra was built between 1644 and 1646 AD by Mir Abul Qasim, the diwan (chief revenue official)[2] of Mughal prince Shah Shuja. It was intended to be Shah Shuja's residence, but Shah Shuja endowed it to Mir Abul Qasem.[3] Less than half of the structure remains, and it is in disrepair. The Department of Archaeology has been unable to take charge of the monument owing to litigation and resistance from its owners. The owners have altered the original building and encroached upon it with new construction.[4] Abul Qasim al-Husaini at-Tabtaba as-Simnani built this edifice, endowing it with twenty-two shops, attached to it, on the rightful and lawful condition that the officials in charge of the endowment would expend the income derived from them upon the repairs of the building and upon the poor and that they should not take any rent from any deserving person alighting therein, so that the pious act may reflect upon the monarch in this world and that they should not act contrariwise, or else they would be called to account on the Day of Retribution. — An inscription composed by Mughal poet Sa'ad-uddin Muhammad Shirazi Architecture The building follows the traditional pattern of Central Asian caravanserais and is embellished as per Mughal architecture. Originally it enclosed a quadrangular courtyard.[3] A reconstructed model of the Bara Katra The southern wing extends 67.97 metres (223.0 ft),[4] and fronted on the Buriganga River. In the middle is an entrance set in a three-storeyed projected bay.[3] The gateway has an arched alcove that rises to the second story, above which are the windows of the third storey.[4] The arched main entrance is in the centre of the alcove. The underside of the alcove, spandrels, and surrounding walls are decorated with plastered panels exhibiting a variety of forms, including four-centered, cusped, horseshoe, and flat arches. The main portion of the wing is two-storeyed and bookended by tall projected octagonal towers.[3] The northern wing was similar, but with a less elaborate gate.[2] The east and west wings were single storey and about 70.10 metres (230.0 ft) long.[4] In the 19th century, Orientalist James Atkinson described the building as "a stupendous pile of grand and beautiful architecture".[5] The southern entrance leads to a guardroom, then an octagonal domed hall (the ceiling of which is plastered and decorated with net-patters and foliage designs), and finally to the courtyard. On the ground floor of the southern wing, there are five vaulted rooms to either side of the gateway. On the upper floor, living chambers open off of a corridor.[4] Shops and living quarters surrounded the courtyard on

I wish Samdani Art Foundation would donate the soil they gathered for installation arts. Shilpakala Academy lacks much in pure soil. Hope this academy of arts would be a true example of 'living in art'. Even the washroom should be redesigned. At least the surroundings and the adjacent streets around the academy should be cleared. That wholesome change would really give the passers-by around that there is something 'arts' in here! Thank you!

The place is really amazing. Full of innovative arts and paintings. But the problem is the exhibitions shouldn't be free of cost. The authority should start ticket system. Most of the people there went to just capture photos and post it in the social media. Not a single person I saw was interested in the arts and details. They just went there solely for capturing photos. No respect and understanding for art. There was so much crowd which is very irritating for people who go there only for the art. I don't really get why Bangladeshi people make every place dating place? Why do they make every occasion dating occasion? I felt very disgusting. I think authority should ban mobile phones inside the hall and charge a good amount of money for ticket.

The place is now a property of a Madrasah. Many of the old building have reconstructed and plastered. Only the main tremendous gate is now visible in its original form. The place could have been preserved by the govt and it could be one of the best historical site. But it is too late and the changes have been made cannot be undone. By the way the monument has still attractive features and you'll certainly be happy and get a slight touch of Mughal Architectural skills visiting this place. This is really magnificent and able to testify your taste in old Bengal history.

Bara Katra (Bengali: বড় কাটরা; Great Caravanserai), a historical and architectural monument, is one of the oldest buildings in Dhaka. The word Katra may have originated from Arabic word Katara which means colonnaded building. Bara Katra was built between 1644 and 1646 AD by Mir Abul Qasim, the diwan (chief revenue official) of Mughal prince Shah Shuja. It was intended to be Shah Shuja's residence, but Shah Shuja endowed it to Mir Abul Qasem. Less than half of the structure remains, and it is in disrepair. The Department of Archaeology has been unable to take charge of the monument owing to litigation and resistance from its owners. The owners have altered the original building and encroached upon it with new construction Wkipedia:----

A great place to see the cultures in pictures and art. I've been there while an exhibition was running. Crowd was moderate. There is no fee for entering. Recommended to visit while in Dhaka. You can use the toilets, male & female toilets are separated. So don't get any funny ideas. The academy provides training and resources in various arts and cultural disciplines such as music, dance, theater, fine arts, and crafts. It also serves as a center for cultural events and exhibitions, hosting performances, exhibitions, workshops, and other cultural activities throughout the year.

The large, open and beautifully decorated 'Dhaka Art Summit-2023' is truly an inspiration for the art lovers. To avoid chaos and crowds, early visits are recommended. As today is the last day of art summit, it was crowded.

Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Segunbagicha, Dhaka, is a cultural gem hosting music, dance, theater, and art events. Its impressive architecture and modern facilities create a welcoming atmosphere for visitors. The Academy's commitment to preserving traditional arts alongside promoting contemporary expressions makes it a dynamic cultural hub. Collaborations with local and international artists enrich Dhaka's artistic landscape. Art education initiatives and workshops nurture aspiring talents. While ticket availability and pricing can be improved, it remains a vital institution in Bangladesh's cultural scene. With diverse offerings and a passion for the arts, the Academy captivates audiences and showcases the nation's artistic heritage.

  • 5/5 NJ L. 11 months ago on Google
A place for art and art enthusiastic people. Bangladesh Shilpokola Academy stands as a beacon of artistic expression and cultural preservation. As a visitor, I was captivated by the rich heritage and diverse artistic offerings that the academy had to offer. First and foremost, the academy's commitment to promoting and preserving traditional Bangladeshi art forms is commendable. From the moment I entered the premises, I was greeted with vibrant displays of local handicrafts, traditional music, dance performances, and visual art exhibitions. It was a captivating blend of old and new, seamlessly combining centuries-old traditions with contemporary interpretations. The diverse range of artistic disciplines covered by the academy was truly impressive. From classical music and dance to folk performances and modern art, there was something for everyone. I particularly enjoyed the live performances, which showcased the immense talent of Bangladeshi artists. The academy's auditorium provided a comfortable and acoustically pleasing environment for these performances, enhancing the overall experience. The exhibitions held at the academy were a true testament to Bangladesh's artistic prowess. The visual art galleries featured a myriad of styles, from traditional paintings and sculptures to experimental installations and mixed media. Each artwork seemed to tell a unique story, reflecting the country's history, culture, and contemporary challenges. The curated exhibitions were well-thought-out, offering visitors a comprehensive understanding of Bangladesh's artistic journey. One aspect that could be improved is the signage and information available for visitors. While the staff members were helpful, I found that some areas lacked detailed explanations or labels, making it challenging to fully appreciate the context and significance of certain exhibits. Enhancing the educational aspect through audio guides or written descriptions would greatly enhance the visitor experience. The academy's commitment to nurturing artistic talent is evident through its various workshops, seminars, and training programs. Aspiring artists and enthusiasts can engage in hands-on learning experiences, interact with established artists, and broaden their artistic horizons. This dedication to fostering creativity and knowledge exchange is commendable and ensures the preservation and growth of Bangladesh's artistic heritage. In terms of facilities, the Bangladesh Shilpokola Academy offers a well-maintained and spacious environment. The architectural design of the complex seamlessly blends traditional elements with modern aesthetics, creating an ambiance that is both inviting and culturally immersive. The academy's gardens provide a tranquil setting, perfect for reflection and contemplation after exploring the vibrant displays.
