According to the Encyclopedia of Dhaka published by the Asiatic Society, the Dhaka Gate was built between 1660 and 1663 by Mir Jumla, who served as governor of Bengal during the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. It served as a gateway to the city and a marker of its boundaries. Doel Square (Bengali: দোয়েল চত্বর, Doel Chattar) is one of the popular areas of the University of Dhaka campus located in Shahbag, Dhaka. There is sculpture of Oriental magpie-robin in the middle of the Doel Square. The oriental magpie-robin is the national bird of Bangladesh and locally known as the doyel or doel (Bengali: দোয়েল). The sculpture's architect is Azizul Jalil Pasha. Doel Square is a bearer and carrier of the national culture of Bangladesh.

Doyel chattar is situated at the crossroads joining roads coming from Shahbagh, Pressclub, Chankharpul and Polashi. It's a place close to my heart. The watery fountain is rarely functional, but it does add to its beauty when it is. Always a busy junction, soon to get busier due to the metro station nearby.

The statue of Doyle, the national bird of Bangladesh, is located here. Doel Chatwar is named after this Doel bird. Here are some memorable memories of Bangladesh Liberation War. This square is located next to Bangladesh Children's Academy, Three Leaders' Shrine and Curzon Hall. Currently, the neighborhood sells a variety of items such as home decor items, flower tubs, mirrors, pottery, handmade bags, etc.
