BIRDEM, the Bangladesh Institute of Research and Rehabilitation in Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders at Shahbag, Dhaka, Bangladesh, is a 600-bed multidisciplinary hospital complex of the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh. The hospital was established in 1980 with the financial support of Bangladesh. In BIRDEM, 3,000 patients are treated in the Out Patients Department (OPD) every day. No other hospital in Bangladesh serves so many diabetes patients. According to the Denmark-based multinational pharmaceutical company Novo Nordics Vice President of the Pacific Ocean, Selvam Afsar Tuna, This is the world's largest hospital in treating diabetes. It has been designated as a WHO Collaborating Centre on Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders, as the only one of its kind in Asia. History, BIRDEM was founded by the late national professor Muhammad Ibrahim in 1980. Under his leadership, Bangladesh Diabetic Association (then named Diabetic Association for Pakistan) was formed in February 1956. Bangladesh Diabetic Association are nine separate organizations. These are the BIRDEM (Bangladesh Institute of Research and Rehabilitation in Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders), Rehabilitation and Vocational Training Center, National Healthcare Network, Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital and Research Center, Ibrahim Medical College, Bangladesh Institute of Health Sciences, BIRDEM Nursing College, Bangladesh University of Health Sciences, and Healthcare Development Project. Professor Muhammad Ibrahim proposed a chamber of the lower house of his home in Segunbagicha, Dhaka to be used by the Association. In the home, he started the outdoor department for diabetes. During the Pakistan period,[when?] the Samity was given some land for the hospital in Segunbagicha. The hospital was inaugurated in 1980 at Shahbagh. In 2013, BIRDEM-2 hospital was started in Segunbagicha.

Only reliable hospital to get diabetic treatment as well as reliable insulin. If you want to do a basic health checkup you should make an appointment ahead. If you want to buy quality insulin you have to wait for a long queue.

I was there for two times due to my family members are admitted and I’m satisfied of their treatment. Hospital is a bit crowded but you can be confident for their treatment. For cleanliness I would like to mark ‘average’. Treatment is a bit expensive but they don’t create unusual issues for cutting down your money. They have large parking space but you need to pay for it.

Very busy hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Very popular and well known. Recognised internationally and nationally for good treatment facilities. Treatment cost is expansive. Though National Professor Dr. Md. Ibrahim established it for the treatment of mass people including low socioeconomic people. But now it is like other Private hospitals not within the reach of general people. Only rich people can avail treatment from this hospital. Quality of service is high. But only for rich people. I think it was not the dream of Professor Dr. Ibrahim.

It is a general hospital.. People thinks that it is only for diabetes patients.. But it is not only for diabetes patients but also for others.. But it ia true that it is the best hospital for the diabetes patients in Bangladesh.. My mother used to admit here several times.. She also got dialysis from here.. The service of that hospital is good. Specially I like the discipline of the hospital management... Almost all kind of departments are available here. My wife is also a doctor of this hospital.

BIRDEM is a renowned hospital for the diabetic patients specially. Cardiovascular patients are also well treated here. This is an oldest and enriched hospital with respect to expert doctors and diagnostic instruments. Well regarding the costing of diagnosis you may found the price is a bit competitive. Doctors are available both in special chamber and outdoor but doctor's bill is high in special chamber. Other than that I am confident you won't get down or disappointed with the treatment facilities of BIRDEM. Best wishes!

Typically crowdy place. Outdoor requires you to wait a lot. But here you'll find quality doctors who treats patients well. As a hospital, it should be more neat and clean. Hopefully, this thing will be taken care of.

There are few experienced Physicians but overall service is not good at all. It has lost it’s glory. Once Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital was famous for it’s strict management and systematic process to facilitate services to the patients. But now this is the big problem and for which patients has to suffer. Also cost of treatments in BIRDEM is no more cheaper or I should say It's go almost at par with few expensive private hospitals. But compared to those private hospitals the services is far behind. If you have prior appointment with a doctor, although I will advice you to keep an extra few hours in hand. The behavior of the staffs are also not satisfactory. I think with this cost, I Won't recommend it at all.

Security is good, Small space for vehicle parking, CCTV camera active, washrooms are not much clean, having different booth and sections for services, emergency section is good, cabins are getting old, wards are always crowdy. Treatment is good here so far.

BIRDEM Hospital is a popular medical centre in Bangladesh. It is situated at Shahbagh, dhaka, opposite of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Medical (PG Hospital). This is a diabetes specialist hospital and also diabetes Association centre. People from various places come in this for cure. Their treatment is good. As a government hospital the cost is reasonable. This place is very crowdy people need to buy ticket in a very long line.

I would say one of the best hospitals I have visited so far. The lobbies are grand, and they are serious about hygiene and other things that are crucial in a hospital. It was a nice place to pray and multiple cafeterias for the people to calm down a bit during the rough times.

BIRDEM General Hospital is largest Diabetic Hospital in the world. Situated at the heart of the capital city, BIRDEM serves the huge number of people suffering from diabetes in this country. Under the supervision of BADAS (Diabetic Association of Bangladesh) it serves an increasing number of people everyday. It was first established by National Professor Dr Ibrahim, who was the pioneer of diabetic treatment in this country. It started it's journey in a tinshed building in Segunbagicha, then it moved to Shahbagh opposite the PG Hospital, which is now called BSMMU (Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University). BIRDEM now offers its services to numerous people everyday. Almost all cases of diabetes and diabetes related complications are handled here and being a general hospital, non-diabetic patients can get proper treatment too.

This hospital has the worst host of serving patients, just to show reports ( next day after visit) had to wait and stand for 2 hours with reports, this is unacceptable ,no way you can treat patients like that waiting for hours when the OPD Doctors take visits only 10 Am to 12 pm just three hours and there's the whole system and processing isn't that convenient for patients who come here, I highly ask and demand authorities to take necessary steps and actions so the patients doesn't have to suffer more than their health issues. Thank you. May Allah help us.

Founded by late prof Dr Ibrahim, this hospital is dedicated to diabetes treatment in a systematic way. Has many branches. Test reports are very accurate, next to ICDDR,B. Fees are reasonable. It's also good for cardiac surgery. Found some medical representatives taking snaps of prescriptions, some guards n employees helping them. I drove away few. Behaviours of employees n doctors are not so good now a days. Docs do not explain anything to patients, even seen scolding patients. Counter attendents, specially at book delivery counter, are very rude. Patients have to wait for hours for tests n for Doc's advice. Dr Ibrahim was a great humanist, but his dream to serve patients is being ruined due to mismanagement n ill behaviour. I also think that neighbour buildings of Radio Bangladesh n Dhaka club should be given to BIRDEM for the betterment of the people. However, we hope for the best.

(Translated by Google) Alhamdulillah, the management of the hospital is very orderly. As soon as you enter the hospital, you will be fascinated by its pleasant environment. There is a long lake behind the hospital where you can swim occasionally if you want. There is nothing here compared to the big notes that have to be counted only as the visitor's fee when it comes to getting medical services in private clinics. Fees for various tests ranging from serial fees are very meager. The doctors are responsible and caring. They have many facilities here as it is a big hospital, though few machines face occasional problems as those are getting old. Most of the nurses are good, but some of the nurses' behavior is rude and they aren't responsible enough. BIRDEM should increase the number of nurses and train them well how to behave with patients, specially in the wards. People don't expect rude and irresponsible behavior from nurses in a private hospital.

Proud of Bangladesh A VISIONARY AND A MISSIONARY: Back in 1956, when people had a perception that diabetes is a disease of the affluents and hardly anyone anticipated that diabetes would be an epidemic even in developing countries. Professor Dr Mohammad Ibrahim (1911-1989) led a team of dedicated colleagues to establish the Diabetic Association of Pakistan which eventually became Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (in Bangla Bangladesh Diabetic Somiti, acronym BADAS) . The dream of the Founder was to create such facilities and environment where no diabetic shall die untreated, unemployed or unfed even if poor. Over the last five decades the Association has created the largest infrastructure, and registered patient base in the world for the prevention and care of diabetes. In addition, next to the Government, it is now the largest comprehensive health care provider as well as the health manpower generating organization in Bangladesh. BIRDEM: Vision In Bangladesh no diabetic should die untreated, unemployed or unfed. All people shall be provided with affordable health care service. BIRDEM: Mission Provide total healthcare including rehabilitation for all diabetics irrespective of gender, economic and social status through different institutions of Diabetic Associations of Bangladesh. Expand these services to provide affordable BADAS healthcare for all Bangladeshi through self-sustaining centres of excellences. Create specialized quality manpower (Research Scientists, Physicians, Technicians, Nurses and other related personnel) of high ethical standard. Develop leadership in healthcare through dedicated and transparent management system Develop industries for manufacturing quality medicines and healthcare products.

A place housing country's top doctors and physicians. But, overall management should be improved. And there should be some infrastructural development as well, e.g., more seating area in the upper floors, cleaner washrooms and toilets, better management of cues.

It's a huge hospital specially for the outdoor patients. It caters the needs of thousands of outdoor patients regarding different tests such as blood sugar, lipid profile, createnine level, SGPT etc. Moreover there are good number of wards & cabins for indoor patients. Here cost of different tests are comparatively lower. Furthermore the hospital is located at the center point of Dhaka city. As such people can come here by bus easily.

A trusted name for the Diabetic patients and other diseases also. Their tests are trusted and less costly then most of the private hospitals and clinics in Dhaka. The location is just opposite to BSMMU, another behemoth in Medical Sevices in Bangladesh. The doctors here are highly qualified, sincere and punctual but due to time restriction, as always seen in Bangladesh, they some times dont pay quite attention to the patients. Indoor, outdoor and emergency Departments including CCU, ICU, NICU, OT are available here. Renowned Ibrahim Medical College is here on the same premises. Some staffs are rude due to high work pressure besides this issue all are helpful here. Some rules and ethics are strictly followed here. Elderly patients will get comfort here.
