Sir Salimullah Medical College is a government medical college in Bangladesh. It is located in old Dhaka on the banks of the river Buriganga. Its previous name was "Mitford Hospital". Prior to 1855, it was a "Dutch factory" used for business purposes. [1] The hospital was established in 1857. The hospital was built by his trustees with the money left by Robert Mitford, the Collector of Dhaka and later Justice of the then Supreme Court of Dhaka. Robert Mitford, the then Collector of Dhaka, took this initiative. At the time of his death in 1838, he donated his property to the hospital. Lord Dalhousie later decided to build a hospital on the property. The value of his donated property was then Rs. 1,600,000. Later, in 1854, the journey to Mitford Hospital began. Many more then donated money for this hospital. Its construction work continued for four years. It started with a female and two male wards. At first there were 92 beds.

Sir Salimullah Medical College (SSMC) is one of the oldest government hospitals of Bangladesh. It is a full-fledged medical college hospital. This hospital has lots of trained medical officers and specialists. However, the stuff's aren't as good as expected. Most of them demand bribe to help the patients. For example, the blood bank employees (juwel and his team) charges 1000 taka bribe in order to collect platelet from the donors. If you don't pay, they won't collect platelet from your donors. The authority should take a close look at these issues.

Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital holds a significant place as one of Bangladesh's oldest government hospitals, serving as a comprehensive medical college hospital. The hospital boasts a considerable number of skilled medical officers and specialists, contributing to its role as a prominent healthcare institution. While the medical expertise is notable, the review highlights concerning aspects of the hospital experience. Instances of staff members demanding bribes, such as blood bank employees asking for money to collect platelets from donors, are brought to attention. This issue of corruption needs immediate attention from the hospital's authority to uphold ethical medical practices. The historical background of Sir Salimullah Medical College adds to its significance, with the hospital's architecture reflecting both utilitarian design and historical value. However, some buildings lack proper maintenance and modern amenities, leading to crowded spaces, sound pollution, and unhygienic toilets. One of the hospital's commendable attributes is its accessibility to lower-income individuals, who can receive treatment at minimal costs. Being a government hospital with a medical college on its premises adds to its credibility. The emergency center operates 24/7, offering swift responses to accidents and medical emergencies, while the outpatient center remains consistently busy. While the administration and healthcare providers strive to offer quality service, certain areas require improvement. Car parking, restroom cleanliness, and security camera coverage are noted as concerns that require attention. In summary, Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital carries a legacy as a government healthcare institution with historical value. Its medical capabilities are undermined by the presence of corruption and some shortcomings in facilities and hygiene. Addressing these challenges would elevate the hospital's reputation and improve the overall patient experience. Disclaimer: This review is based on the information provided and may not fully reflect the experience of every individual. It is advisable to consider multiple perspectives and conduct further research before making a final judgment.

➤ 15-01-2023 Mitford Hospital, Dhaka The Mitford hospital, originally named after the philanthropist Robert Mitford of the British India civil service, who served many years in Dhaka as collector and later, as judge of the Provincial Court of Appeal, was the most important medical institution, not only in Dhaka, but in the whole of Eastern Bengal and Assam in the mid-19th century. Robert Mitford died in Europe in 1836, but before his death he bequeathed the bulk of his property (about eight lakh rupees) to the Government of Bengal for public works in Dhaka. This was, however, disputed by his successors in England and finally the Chancery Court partially decreed in favor of the Bengal Government in 1850. With Mitford's benevolent gift, the construction of this hospital was started in 1854 on its present site, which was then known as Babu Bazar. Prior to this, the site was earlier occupied by a Dutch kuthi. Occupying an oblong area of about 12.8 acres of land on the river bank, the hospital complex comprises more than fourteen different blocks of no particular architectural significance but historically important and eminently of utilitarian character. Most of these blocks, built at different times in the last hundred years or more, and which originally were single-storeyed, have now been raised to four storeys. The Medical College block is a fairly handsome large building located at the south-eastern corner near the river bank with an attractive large garden in front. It was originally erected in 1889, toughly in the shape on English ‘H’ with two symmetrical projections in the middle on the north and the south, one accommodating a verandah and the other, a staircase. It presents a 225’-0” long frontage to the north. The nucleus of this institution of great public utility, established over a century back was the generous gift of Mitford, after whom it was originally named. It has now been renamed after Nawab Salimullah Bahadur in the 1960s and has developed and expanded with the time and with the donations of a number of public-spirited luminaries of Dhaka, after whom several isolated block of buildings have been dedicated. However, it is a great pity that the name of the original patron, Robert Mitford who bequeathed a substantial part of his life's savings for the founding of this institution has now been completely forgotten and not a single block of the existing buildings has been allowed to cherish his memory.

One of the oldest medical college in this subcontinent, probably only behind Calcutta Medical College. In terms of academic activity we are definitely one of the best in this country. Classes and exams happen at a regular basis. Apart from that, not much extra curricular activities to do here. Recently, a new academic building is being constructed, although the iconic red building still stays strong. Let's hope it keeps doing what it does best, bringing in and moulding the future doctor's of our country. Cheers.

The field of medicine is an essential and dynamic realm that constantly evolves to meet societal health needs. Medical professionals, through rigorous training, demonstrate commitment to improving lives. Advances in research and technology continually enhance diagnostic and treatment capabilities. The collaborative nature of healthcare encourages interdisciplinary approaches, fostering holistic patient care. However, challenges such as workload and systemic issues persist. Overall, the impact of medicine on global well-being is undeniable, and the dedication of those within the medical community remains commendable.

Mitford Hospital established in 1820, named after Sir Robert Mitford, Collector of Dhaka and also a long serving judge of the Provincial Court of Appeal. During his time there was an alarming cholera epidemic and at the height of it 150 to 200 persons died daily in Dhaka. Medical facilities were inadequate. Sir Mitford was distressed to see the suffering of the people. Before his death in England in 1836, he bequeathed the bulk of his property (about Rs 800,000) to the government of Bengal for benevolent works in Dhaka including building of a hospital. This was disputed by his successors but finally, in 1850, the Chancery Court partially decreed in favour of the Bengal Government, by virtue of which it received Rs 166,000. With this fund the hospital was started in 1858 on its present site, then known as 'Katra Pakurtali', Babu Bazar. Prior to this, the site was occupied by a Dutch kuthi (house).

The hospital has been dedicated to the public for the treatment of dengue. The amount that has to be spent in a government hospital is not what we really want. Although the government hospital has a system to test the patient's sample, the doctors recommend it from outside. This is not desirable at all for us normal patients.
