I love this place! The food is always good, lunch, dinner, coffee, or just a snack with drinks. The brownie is sinfully delicious! The view and ocean breeze are both so enjoyable. On some nights they even have a DJ with such a cool vibe. I totally recommend this place!

Been before, pre-pandemic and coming back a few years later, just as good as remember, so chilled, great drinks and food.... gorgeous setting looking out to sea, at the top of the old town on the pavement terrace.

Great food, atmosphere and drinks, but OH MY GOD the service is just so bad. The waiters as a whole just don’t give a sh*t about anything, always annoyed and so slow, people were waiting up to half an hour just to pay their bill. Messing up or forgetting orders was regular thing (we went there twice during the afternoon). With such great place, if the waiters at least just tried to care and move quickly they would increase their cash tips with 200% at least. The only waiter that was trying to do something was the Trainee, but he was too, lost because his colleagues just left him to manage in his own.

The perfect spot for coffee, lunch, beer or whatever you fancy. Don't expect quick service this is as laid back as it gets in a good way! Getting a table can also be a challenge but let a member of staff know you're waiting.

Great outdoor seating area and the staff are so friendly. Poncha is as good as it should be. I spent a great few hours enjoying my first afternoon here and chatting with the locals.

Awesome place to watch sunset in Funchal, excellent hamburgers (Picante, spicy) and DJ music (fri, sat 6pm-12pm)!! The place is often full of locals that is also good sign. Test poncha!

As the saying goes - if the view is great, food doesn't have to be. I had a poncha regional (really good), picante burger (which wasn't spicy and was barely decent) with fries and tropical negroni (good). Hey, this place is great if you enjoy second-hand smoking! The wind from the ocean blows smoke from people in front of you towards you and your meal. I had to ask the waiters (friendly) 3 times to talk with the customers, because each time they said they will talk with them and went on their merry way without doing it. There should be a smoking zone if the customers can't deal without smoking for a short time.

This is a great little bar. Good location with fine sea views from tables across road from bar itself. Wandered in on sunny mid afternoon, midweek, late May 2022. Place pretty full, but couple just upping to leave so lucky to nab a couple of seats at table directly overlooking sea. Initially only wanted a drink, but one, became two, became three, became food. Couple of Corals for me before trying a Ponchos, and white wines for wife. There was a good vibe in the place and great if you are a people watcher. The serving staff in particular were diligent and efficient...a troupe of bright young things, always on the go. Decided to eat on seeing various dishes and portions being served to other customers. They looked and smelled good with heathy portions and good service. A glance at the menu confirmed reasonable prices around a decent selection (not haute cuisine, but good bar fare). Went for cheese burger with fries and a caesar salad. The taste confirmed the look and smell as delicious and portions basically did us for the rest of the day. The lot came to around to 25 euros so bargain. Even though this bar was well across town from where we were staying (Pestana Carlton, see my review on that) we returned and would again. As well as location, not on tourist beat, but not too far off it...and along with the good food / drinks and prices...a clincher for me was the service. There was both enough staff and those there seemed to be a well oiled machine. Not sure whether we caught them on a good day but well done guys...keep it up and your punters will keep coming back.

Barreirinha Bar Café is a popular bar and café located in Funchal, Madeira. It is a great place to go for a drink, a bite to eat, or just to relax and enjoy the view. The bar is located in a prime location, right on the waterfront. The interior is spacious and airy, with a large outdoor terrace that offers stunning views of the bay. The bar is known for its wide selection of drinks, including cocktails, beers, and wines. They also have a menu of light snacks and sandwiches.

Amazing view! Friendly waiter and its a nice madeira hipster vibe! 🤓 Will definitely come again, the beer was good and the coffee and reasonable prices as well, will hopefully have some lunch here in the near future, really catches the Madeira feeling and view! Thanks a lot, cheers

Such a shame, I was looking forward to trying this place after reading good reviews. It's in a nice area, really chilled atmosphere overlooking the sea and right next to the Lido swimming area. The young female staff member was lovely and professional. We both got the Prego, I opted to have mine with egg and chips, the Mrs had one without egg and with salad. I had to ask for cutlery for her salad and the server seemed to forget, so I had to go ask again at the counter. The main let down was that the steak was really stringy/chewy which spoilt it. The salad also had some fresh salad on top of older non fresh salad.

Tasty sandwiches and fries, good view. Nearly didn’t sit down here because the one male waiter/barman was extremely unfriendly and dismissive, but luckily we did and afterwards the two girls were kind and accommodating.

lovely little restaurant and bar. the location and thus view are perfect, overlooking the ocean, and with picturesque buildings along the street. the staff were very friendly, kind, and very sweet. the food was good, nothing less than i expected, and the portions were perfect if not slightly generous. pricing is very reasonable and affordable! the place is filled with locals, as it’s above the public beach—you can listen to the soft echo of people swimming and laughing below the cliff or watch from above. it’s overall a really nice place to either eat lunch/dinner or just stop and get a drink/coffee and read a book, and/or listen to portugese around you, and watch motorcycles and vespas drive past.

As everyone says, the location is amazing. It’s really relaxing hearing the waves in the background. The cocktails are very nice and reasonably priced. We only had a small meal but the portions were generous and the food very tasty. Would definitely visit again, but don’t be surprised if you have to wait for a seat overlooking the beach. There also didn’t appear to be much of a queuing system with people often racing to grab a free seat as people were leaving.

Great spot overlooking the ocean on the edge of the busier part of the old town (east of the fort). Burgers, sandwiches, salads and Burritos are the main things on the menu, both the beef/bacon burger and bbq chicken were good. Good choice of Craft Beers by the bottle and a few on draft. Socorro brewed by Madeira Beer Lab made specifically for this bar.

Just past the fort is this roadside cafe with a large terrace area across the road. Sea views. Saw it a couple of nights ago when it was buzzing with young people. Burgers and burritos looked popular. Friendly staff. €1.60 for 0.3l Coral.

We went there 4 or 5 times through our week long holiday. Amazing place. The vibe, the food, the drinks I personally liked Cesar salad very much! It is juicy and has very fresh leaves And then drinks are just superior

Great location overlooking the sea. Service was a bit slow but it was a bit busy so not surprising. Cocktails were pretty good too

A perfect place for a bar food lunch/dinner. You are sitting on a sidewalk with a view out to the sea. Perfect temperature in October! Good value, and our burgers were perfect. On the edge of a tourist district but prices are fair. I'd recommend this place for a relaxing drink in the afternoon or a meal to keep you going.

The place has a magnificent view of the ocean. The waiters were nice and polite and we got the order quickly. We ordered hamburgers, a brownie and a jar of sangria from red wine which were delicious. Good prices. 100% recommended!!! Note: the place was full, so you might have to wait for a free table.

The “prego” sandwiches are fantastic. With or without egg, fully filled. They are great. Freshly fries are really good. Certainly a recommendation

This place has been our go to place for breakfast during our holidays. Fresh orange juice, wide range of toasts and sandwiches, good coffee and okay pastel de nata. View from the terrasse is stunning and service always with a smile. We also stopped few times in the evening to enjoy a drink and the live DJ.

Tasty burgers, excellent Coral stout (black draft beer), great view over the Atlantic Ocean. Also quite cheap, highly recommended for a quick meal.

We love this place overlooking the lido at the top of Funchal old town. The view is wonderful, the salads, fresh fruit drinks are good value and there is often live music in the evening. We first came in 2012 and we revisit at least once every year. Enjoy!

Barreirinha 'little barreir' means just that. ☆☆☆ Situated on the corner of Rua do Asp.Mota Freitas/Calçada do Socorro, a mere 100m uphill, east from the stately historic fort of 'São Tiago' circa 1614 and the beautiful 'Igreja Matriz de Santa Maria Maior or 'Socorro' right next door. It was here my parents got married in 1961 and because of my 1st visit with my mother & my cousin(s), we discovered Bar Barreirinha. And after that we have returned many many times, because its that kind of place that feeds your soul. ☆☆☆ Bar Barreirinho, literally is a small cornered establishment, with a long family table, extensive draught line, bar rack & counter and side extension for busy bartenders cocktails. It too can spill over the pavement for 3-5 tables outside, next to each door, door, door. ☆☆☆ THE MAGIC, a mere 10m across the road, is where everything happens. It is positioned on the edge of the waterline next to a cemented wall & above molten larva rock, with access to that, for swimmers delight. It's open panoramic 180° view of the horizon sea, the Funchal 'Pontinha' port with cruise ships and the colourful old town of 'cidade velha', brings absolutely joy. And to top that, the sun goes down West just behind the 'Pontinha' wall as the moon rises from the East in full glow.Very spectacular to see this motion of dance. These amazing sunsets has attracted a fan club of 'Ra' sun worshippers, with myself included. It has created quite a stir amongst locals & visitors. So much so, that, finding an empty chair & table is hard. All about timing, but as usual, ask the friendly staff to reserve you one, upon availabilty, or you can always sit on the bordering low wall & use it as a table for your drinks and complimentary snacks as the BOX plays. ■The outside tables have umbrellas for most, although I love the open sun.Smoking is allowed for in these opened area's & the toilets are inside, not user friendly for the disabled. ■ BAR menu is quite extensive with a horde of local cocktails freshly squeezed, stiff, slammered, shaken, stirred or blended. Champagnes, juices, wines and yes draught & local craft Madeira Lab beer nicely chilled for these, 'pôr do sol' sunsets moments. ■FOOD menu is standard and well portion to price. Here everyrhing is made from scratch. So it will take time and patience is highly honoured as you sip on a chilling cold beverage watching cruise ships, motoyachts or the local ferry to Porto Santo, the 'Lobo Marinho' enter or depart. ■THE BOX or 'groovey dj' plays music in the later part of the day under the shade of trees. Very talented dj(s) that know their grooves & moves. Great value to this chillaxing area.. ■Parking right next to the tables, however normally full but continue uphill & take a left and there is a covered pay-parking with 2 floors on the right. Walk down the narrow road of Rua Asp. De Mota Freitas and you back here. ☆☆☆ Overall this bar has superb sea, sun & harbour views, Food is great and the quality of beverages is freshly balanced, chilled and hits the spot. CC & cash accepted.15% tip not included - at your discretion. As you unwind within the old & charm of new you will think of definately returning as I have keeping the tradition of 'groovey' alive. If this was helpful please thumbs up.

In fairness I didn't have anything to eat. Just came for the view and sat on the bench. Gorgeous views though. Well worth the walk up to it!! I'll have a coffee next time for sure!

Scenic views. Great value. A sunny, Sunday lunchtime table on the terrace overlooking a sparkling sea. A bottle of Madeiran rose wine (Atlantis) for E14 came with free garlic bread and snacks. A delightful place with friendly service. Handy for the nearby historic church and a wide variety of restaurants.

We found this after walking for hours around the city and it was a welcome break. Nice chilled vibes, friendly staff, really great prices, and delicious simple food. We originally stopped for an afternoon snack, pastel de nata and a poncha and we enjoyed it that much that we returned for tea later that evening. The chicken burger was lovely and the second poncha was perfect! Lovely sea view and a nice mixture of locals and tourists

👍 Local craft beer from Madeira is rare, so I was very happy to find this restaurant and brewery. They have a quite wide selection of their own beer. Nothing to complain about but also not amazing (sorry).
