    Who knew a casual dining experience could turn into a culinary gem? My husband stumbled upon this hidden gem and we were blown away by the taste sensations that hit every single taste bud. The food was exceptional, leaving us wanting more. The friendly and warm staffs added to the welcoming atmosphere. It was a unique experience to choose the meat ourselves from the well-stocked chiller. And to top it off, Chef Jo torches the beef to perfection, cooking it to medium-rare just the way we like it. We highly recommend giving this place a try!

    Finally got to try this place after seeing a friend's visit here months ago. We came here early for lunch on a Saturday as we didn't make a booking. Location would have been easy to miss if we didn't know about this place beforehand. We had the beef tartare, onsen butter rice, icy hot foie gras, 001, and 003 steak. It was really nice that you can choose your own cuts for the beef dishes. 1. Beef tartare was spectacular wrapping it in seaweed! It was nice on its own but the seaweed wrap gave it another flavor boost altogether. 2. Onsen butter rice was really lovely as well but if you need your protein, you need to order more than just this. 3. The icy hot foie gras blew us away! I'm not a big fan of foie gras in general but this is probably the only one I'd eat again. It was warm and crispy on the outside, cold and creamy on the inside. If you don't like butter/fat this dish might not be for you but I must say it's a really nice balance. 4. We chose the 003 steak style based on the 3 butter mix choices we were presented and were amazed by the combo that we had to order another one... 5. 001. Ended the meal on a high with this gem since we couldn't get enough of 003. We chose the option with brulee bone marrow and oh my gosh it's a rollercoaster of flavors. Pretty much Shokugeki irl. Overall food was really delicious and fun! to eat, will definitely come back here. Great job to the team! We also like Chef Joe's energy and passion when it comes to his food haha.

    Celebrated my Anniversary w hubby, the experience were simply spectacular.. Foods selections are amazing as well as the omakase cocktail specially made by Chef Joe himself!. The steak Tartare is simply delicious and Steaks are so tender and the specially paired salads and sides simply tantalising your palate! Really admire his passions and talents! Although price at the high side but its the quality you’re paying, you will have NO regrets! Will come back again for our 2nd anniversary😉

    Quality awesome beef! Very friendly Chef! Chef will introduce what is good to pair with. Must try their energy broth, it’s a love at first sight. Personally I love their garlic butter. All butters are homemade. Chef will personally bring you to choose your cut and recommend you on how it will be cook. Overall, the experience is worth it! Definitely will come again if I come Penang.

    Wonderfully amazing experience at the Beef Bar. Especially love Code 001 as well as the Beef Tartare. That is not to say that the other items we ordered weren't good as they were all amazing. 10/10 would come back!

    I went there twice, first because I didn't quite manage to get what I wanted for the first time but Chef Joe was very obliging in serving what the customer wants and is very interested in building a relationship with them. The second time I had the Steak+Butter Rice and this really hit all the right notes with me. Even though it was only my second time there, I felt like a regular whom the chef gives special attention to and make those extra little tweaks he knows you like to fit your palate best. Awesome service, see you again next year when I'm in Penang for the Literary Festival, Joe!

    Had a small birthday celebration with my other half at here. First time there but definitely would not be the last. We ordered 001 and 003, beef tartare, icy foie gras and energy broth. As someone who is not fond of foie gras, I found myself chomping down every bit of the icy foie gras (MUST ORDER). The mains both 001 and 003 were cooked to just perfection. Another star of the day was the beef tartare, we were both basically fighting for the last bit available on the plate. Service were top notch where they will give recommendation and you also get to pick your choice of steak. Also ask for some special cocktail mix from the owner and get ready to be pleasantly surprise (the MIND BLOWN kind). P. S: The chef kinda look and act like GDRAGON too 😂 (Why so serious? Get your cray-on get your cray-on) Now let the picture do the talking. Unfortunately no picture for foie gras as before I could take any picture, the plate has been wipe clean.

    We had heard so much about this restaurant being so good. And today we are here and we give a 5 star review for the good steak and service on our own. The food, drinks and the fun bustling vibes we just love it! Thumbs up to u guys and definitely will come back again.

    This is a much overdue review. We actually ate more than what’s shown in the pictures, and all the food was amazing (it was so good that we ate it all before remembering to take a picture). Always, always try the Beef Tartare (I think it’s called 003, if I’m not mistaken). We also tried the Tataki and 001 along with the Tartare, and it was just lovely. Chef Joe is very friendly. To describe him, I’d say Joe’s an artist, a friendly eccentric, and at times, a very funny chef. Eating at Modern Beef Bar, you get to experience a unique, one-of-a-kind dining experience. Also, the energy broth is a must-try. Overall, this is a place I will choose when I want to have a good time and enjoy good food.

    Great food. Fun and interesting dining experience. We ordered the 003, beef tartare, onsen butter rice, very garlic fried rice and rocket pomegranate salad. Each dish and each bite was packed with flavour. Enjoyed every dish we ordered. Although the beef dishes were very good as well especially the beef tartare, I’m not a very beef person my favourite was the rice dishes. The rice dishes were the most flavourful rice I’ve eaten 😋 Would definitely come back some other time!

    The staff is very friendly, the seats are very limited so better to have a reservation before visit. If you prefer very tender melty kind of wagyu this place doesn’t suit you, the wagyu they choose is more to suit to people who likes the texture of the meat. Onsen butter rice is so good with the umami soy sauce, very flavorful. The icy foie gras is a must, must pair it with the scallions, it brings the foie gras to the next level. Their chicken soup martini is a meh and it costs 52 but we have no idea about the price of special cocktails. Triple citrus highball is very standard and it costs 38.

    1 star for the ambience 1 star for the service friendliness 1 star for cleanliness Nothing to shout about on the food. Beef is fresh but the amount of sauce and other stuffs that they use it overwhelming. Could have also better selection of wine to go with the beef. A bit disappointed with the high reviews.

    Delicious from start to finish and great service. We had 'Just Salt' for Omi beef, 3 different flavour of homemade salt. Fantastic combination. Highly recommend Beef Tartare, picked our own beef, it taste good. Thanks for the good vibes and amazing service.

    Had a great experience dining here last week. Small cozy place, counter seats only with view of the kitchen and the chefs preparing food. Three choices were offered - marrow butter / garlic butter / herb butter for the steak of your choice served with a side of salad. We decided to go with garlic butter and it came with a really amazing radish salad. The icy hot foie gras was crispy and well seared on the outside and icy in the inside as the name explains - melts in the mouth. Somewhat new to me as most places serve classic pan seared ones but I enjoyed it. We chose a 130g+/- angus beef tenderloin for beef tartare which was about RM50 (steak cost excl cooking cost). The beef tartare was seasoned well and not diced too fine, great texture. The roasted seaweed served together overpowered the taste of the tartare when eaten together and tasted better without it. For our steak we decided to go with A5 Omi Wagyu 260g+/- which was about RM390, I found it pretty reasonable as it was an amazing cut of beef. Looking from across the counter, it seems that the steak was sous vide then pan seared on a smoking hot iron cast pan, let to rest then cut in very even pieces and torched upon serving. Couldn’t find a fault at all in the way the chef prepared the steak. It tasted amazing. The radish salad was so refreshing and balanced the fattiness of the beef. We had a bowl of garlic fried rice to go with and it was really good too. If I had any suggestion that would be if there was just a non-butter but salt only option to be available as well as expensive cuts of wagyu are usually fatty already and tastes good on its own without any flavouring or sauces. Would definitely recommend this place for steak lovers.

    3 main course selection (Code 001,002,003) with pick ur own cut. If you have doubt, they willing to explain professionally. Beef Tataki is a must for appetizer. Overall is a good beef experience.

    Had a great experience here, food was superb. We ordered 6items from the menu and all of it were so good. You may choose your preferred cut of meat paired with different butter and sides. IMO must try items are beef tartare and foie gras, definitely would return again when in Penang.

    I wasn’t sure what to make of this restaurant and I’m so glad we decided to give it a go. Ordered the Beef tataki, beef tartare and a beef special. Once you have made your choices you personally select the cuts of beef you would like and then they prepare it! Food was full of flavour and the beef was perfect. We also had some housemate cocktails by Joe - they did not disappoint. There is also a wine rack to choose some wine to accompany your meal. Joe and Chan made us feel so welcome and like family. Will happily return!
